- My two cents on this legendary SUV. I've owned a few Toyota's and this video is why I decided to buy a new one in 2018. A TRD Off Road Gen 5 Toyota 4Runner . Lets take it in the mountains for a spin and see whats up after 2 years of ownership.

I had a 2000 white SR5 Tacoma 4cyl manual trans and that was unstoppable in the snow. Now I have a 2022 4Runner SR5 Premium and absolutely love it, it is so fun and comfortable to drive and I'll never sell it. It came with the Predator package which includes TRD wheels and skid and side steps everything I was going to put on it anyways so its all need I so wish it had a locking diff but I plan on very light offroading as it is.👍
Just picked up a2023 trd orp last week. 400 miles on it now. Let’s see if it makes it to 400k
Love your comment on how it may be the last vehicle you buy. We have a '99 SR5 we bought in 2004. It just flipped 200K miles with no major issues. I settled on shopping for a late model used TRD ORP to replace my old Dodge PU because of the KDSS for the street and all the other TRD goodies for the dirt. It's a HUGE expense for us, but decided it is more of an investment (Toyota's legendary reliability and Resale value) because, at 58, it may be literally the last vehicle I ever buy, given how we've had our '99 for 17 years now.

Cool video. Spot on. I have a 2010 SR5 Premium in the driveway, it’s been awesome. My 2021 Midnight Black TRD Off Road just arrived at the dealer picking it up next week. It will be my 10th Toyota 4X4. I’m keeping my 2010 for fishing and bush bashing. Cheers.

Nice video. Ya, have had my 20 sr5 for 2 years. Very happy. Has taken me and my son to some amazing backcountry places. Also comfortable on the highway. People complain about the mpg, however I can get 22 mpg average if drive reasonably.

Excellent review btw. I visit the U.S now and then, and am thinking of getting a SUV / Trailer. This video helped me finalize. As for my vehicles, I have my third hilux and a 2018 Fortuner.

Good review! They do get up there in miles! 313,000 on my 02 Tundra! Frame rust, gas tank belly straps, front right bearing, exhaust replaced front to back. But otherwise very very happy here!

Best SUV I have EVER owned. Will out live me. Most reliable, capable, well rounded SUV one can buy for under 45K. TRD with the KDSS is worth every penny. On the Dunlops I have conquered all weather and terrain .. except mud. That is where they fail you. Cannot go wrong with buying this vehicle. It is not a luxury/sports mobile. It is not a rock crawler. (unless modified) But it will take you in stock form where any Jeep JL can go in stock form. ;) And back w/out leaving you stranded. No repair bills. On top of all that, it is far more comfortable getting too and from the adventures in, than any JL will ever be. As well as carry more weight/cargo. So the choice is yours. A throw away vehicle or a life long companion?

I ageee with everything but if you off road I would swap out the Dunlop’s. They were just horrible for me and didn’t get nearly as much traction on the trails or snow compared to a real AT tire like a ko2 or falken wildpeak. I have the wildpeaks on and they are levels and levels better than the Dunlop’s. Big reason why everyone swaps tires soon as they get a runner. Even the trd pro stock wheels nitro terra grapplers aren’t that great and those get swapped out by most people but especially the Dunlop’s but that’s not a big deal. Everything else you said is spot on and totally agree bro. Best suv/truck I’ve ever owned and I wouldn’t trade it for the world.
Agreed, the dunlop's really suck off-road. Pretty quiet on the highway though but other than that, crappy. 👍🍻
KDSS is for high speed off-road and terrible for crawling.

Love my 2019 TRD Off Road. I run Falcon Wild Peak AT on my and have been very happy with those. I'm looking to upgrade the head unit in mine as well. Lots of things I'd like to add to it,not enough money though haha

I have a 2008 Tacoma TRD Off Road and I love it! But I am in the market for something new, and am in the process of getting a 2023 4Runner TRD Off Road Premium.
Just put the build sheet together and emailed it out to the dealer and will be going in to the dealer to get that finalized.
You are correct though the 4Runner is a bit under powered. But it's the reliability I'm looking for. That; and I wanted one with the 4.0 before they drop these down to a turbo 4. I hope I love it as much as you described you love yours!

I purchased my 2022 4Runner TRD Off-Road Base back in March 2022 and I absolutely Love it. I don't like all the Bells and whistles so I opted for a Base with Cloth seating and no Sunroof. Threw a set of Seat covers on to protect them from the kids and a set of Toyota Floor Mats and its been Great! gonna replace those cheap dunlops next year.

Great video. I just bought a 22 off-road with the same intent to keep it until they take my license from me. My youngest son turns 16 next year so I plan a cross Canada trip and hopefully up to Alaska with him in the 4Runner. Camping and fishing our way across Canada!

Great video! My first Toyota was a 1996 Land Cruiser (which I still have, 365k Miles and a little rusty!) and just bought a 2023 4Runner ORP Lunar w/KDSS. I had KDSS on my 2014 GX460 and it was great!

My 2014 sr5 is currently running strong at 323,000km of northern Saskatchewan gravel and ice roads, almost never sees pavement. (Stoney Rapids to Uranium city) Obviously I keep up with maintenance, wear and tear but this thing just keeps going! Even the softex seats still look new! Toyota really outdid themselves with this platform I'd argue it's just as good, if not more durable than the Land Cruiser platform. If I ever get rid of my current 4Runner it will only be for a newer 5th gen. I actually retired (but still own) my 2007 FJ Cruiser w/350k for my current 4runner
You said it, it’s a throw away world, so it takes a certain level of discipline to stick with one vehicle for many years and hundreds of thousands of miles.
And It's much easier to do that with a vehicle that doesn't break every 30000 miles 👍
Got a 2012 4runner Limited w KDSS. 188k so far. Just a couple batteries, brakes, and bulbs thats it. Power locks acting up but dont care! Great truck

Buy a vehicle to own a vehicle. its not a pack of gum, needing to buy a new one every other saturday. with a 4Runner/Tacoma/LC...buy it, own it, then in 5yrs/10yrs come back and tell me how it runs...most will run as new or close. You want new and new, but will only be new for a few months, go buy something else.

Greetings from Alberta. I have a limited model due to its full time 4WD since winter lasts 8 months in my region. But I wish I bought a trd off road as the amount of wheeling I have done since the purchase made me realize that a trd off road is actually much more justifiable than a LTD which is equipped with "pavement features".

I have 2019 4Runner identical to yous only in white.43,000 miles and still perfect.We also have a 2003 Sequoia Limited.201,000 miles other than regular wear/maintenance stuff we did replaced the A/C cpmpressor this summer and thats first major repair its ever had.
Thanks for the awesome comment and information. Funny you mention it, my Lexus GX470 with the same engine and setup as your Sequoia is in for the AC compressor. I should have it out Friday, but it's going to be around $1000. Should be good for another 20 years or so though LOL

Excellent review. Just In May, we purchased our very first Toyota 4Runner TRD off road. Couldn't be happier with this vehicle so far and its capabilities. We too were looking for a vehicle to hold onto for at least 8 to 10 years and not have to worry about quality problems. There really isn't anything else out there that the 4Runner truly compared to. Just out of curiosity, where was this video filmed? Looks like a beautiful Wilderness Area to drive through

Congrats on the new truck. But that sounds strange, mine makes zero noises and I'm approaching 100k. Maybe an add-on phone mount or something like that rattling around?
Good video, good information. I was seriously looking at a 2020 F150. Nice truck and I would be happy with one but I would prefer to keep my next vehicle for a long time and get into some off roading when I retire in a few years. I’ve always wanted a 4Runner but they are pretty expensive here in Ontario. Perhaps worth it if it lasts forever and doesn’t give you any problems. I need to look at one again before I decide.

My regret is not getting a 4Runner or Tacoma when I got my Accord in 1996. I didn’t learn and got a 2014 BMW 328d (used diesel) two years ago. Wish I had gotten a 4Runner instead. I do like the fact that I can fill up once a month so the extra cost of diesel here in Honolulu, HI is a little mitigated. I’m trying to secure a Tacoma Pro.

And I was thinking of replacing whatever crappy tires that come on them with KO2s, until your comment about that tire. Why may I ask did you not like about them? I must say you certainly have alot of experience with 4x4s!
Hi and thanks for the comment! Input from two close friends that ran(one is still running them) the KO2s hard. One on a Tacoma and the other on a Gen5 4Runner. lots of gravel, lots of off road and hard use. The KO2s have worn quickly, especially on gravel.

FWIW I also had a TRD offroad and went with 275s. Had a body mount chop but they rubbed on the front even with a 2.5" lift. Had ot trim the front clip and push the wheel well liners forward. Also like you mentioned it didn't have a lot of get up and go stock, a lot of that has to do with the 5 speed auto. It has power, but as I'm sure you know it requires flooring it and the tranny kicking down to 2nd to get the speed on to pass or accelerate well up a hill. ESPECIALLY loaded with camping gear and the family let alone towing a trailer. That was why I sold mine.
Yeah, that bugs me about mine too. I realized that you really have to drive this thing like you hate it. At first I thought it would get used to it, but almost two years later it still aggravates me. Every once in awhile I flirt with the idea of selling it. Like you said, it's the transmission tuning, and in my opinion the engine makes its torque too high in the rpm range. It's just not a good combo. However, if you've driven a newer Tacoma, they're even worse.
You put bigger tires on any vehicle and it turns into a sloth.

Any reason you choose not to get a small lift on the 4Runner? Just curious because I have a new 4Runner and am debating getting about a 2 inch lift and I do have KDSS installed.
Thanks for the great review! Curious as to how you feel the KDSS feels on washboard roads? I know it's better on the street than stock, and at slower articulation, but very curious if it's bumpy at 30-50 mph off road. Thanks again!
Thanks! On washboards. I can only compare it to new Ford F150's and its like night and day, WAY better than what I was used to. In my Ford's, depending on speed I could easily be sideways on heavy washboards. This 4Runner soaks them up beautifully 🍻🤠
@@JimmyMeatwhistle Good to know. I was looking at the TRD Off Road just for the KDSS on the street as I didn't care for the body lean on the street in the SR5 we test drove. But we have 17 miles of dirt road to get to our cabin, and there's always a decent amount of washboard, My 1986 F-150 totally sucked on it, but our '99 4Runner much better. Nice to know the Off Road does well!
Our car lists a super similar. First car was a 79 scirocco. Now I drive the same rig at 48 and plan to keep it till the end as well. Crazy

It's been great. Light as well so it's not weighing down the 4Runner. Which is nice especially when I fill this thing up with gear. Easy to pack away in the garage when I'm not using it.👍
I’ve got the kdss on mine. Love the way it drives but I’m still wanting to do the Bilsteins I think. The stock ones are Tokico which I’ve always liked. Just thinking about old man emu to correct that sag I get when geared up
@@thepdc6220 Agreed. If I was to do any kind of lift, it would be Bilsteins 5100's with a 1" spacer in the rear. But at the moment keeping it stock. 🤠👍
Do you know if there is any skid plate available that will fit/work with the KDSS suspension?

I've had my TRD Pro for almost 9 months months. I love it. I love that its old and mechanical. I wish it didn't have the safety crap. I love my Softex seats. Eibach made some springs specifically for the Pro and I love it even more with a small lift and 285/70 Falken WildPeak AT3's. I'm thinking of getting a YOHO bed now as well.

My co worker had a 3 year old Denali Yukon. Told him how nice it looked and he said dont ever get one. Things always in the dealership and its a hunk of crap. At 3 years he's already having issues and the dealership argues to not have to repair it.

Did you go with the LT version 10 ply with the ridge grapplers? Either way it’s a 2 ply sidewall on the 265’s. How are they holding up? Any issues with sidewall punctures or anything? Thanks.
They held up great. Awesome tires. Not sure if it was the LT or not though
I own the 4th Gen '08 4Runner Limited V8 and owned the 3rd Gen '97 4Runner Limited V6 in the past. I like the 5th Gen very much especially when they did the major change for the 2014 model year. The new TRD Off-Road with all options looks amazing.
P.S. Did you drive the Powderface Trail in this video? I noticed at 8:00 it looked like the parking lot for the Powderface Ridge trail on the left.
2 questions.. currently looking at an F150 vs a 4runner TRD off-road, you said you use it for hunting, do you miss having a truck bed or are you able to make the 4runner work? and do you ever tow any lighter trailers with the 4runner? if so, how does it do?
Hi, and thanks for the comment. I don't miss the truck bed whatsoever. I have picked up one of those small hitch mounted baskets. Great for hunting. The only thing I have towed with the 4Runner is a small Boler trailer, and it was great 👍
How often do you guys change the oil? Just bought a ‘22 TRD off road. Dealership recommends every 10k miles if I don’t do any heavy driving (towing/off road etc). I do a lot of town/highway driving.

always followed the Toyota recommended oil change Intervals, and oil, of course, is synthetic
I'm in the process of doing my home work for my new purchase. We are retired and are going to flat tow our 4runner. Being we will be hitting some serious trails in Colorado ,Utah and where ever else we up. I'm seeing a lot of confusion on the suspension system on the 4runner. The system that has the red shocks a and are tied together . The X something? That is completely different then the KDSS system. The KDSS has that hydraulic ram that releases pressure on the sway bar. That only gives you more wheel articulation. Pluss the X ? system has has had problems and doesn't add much to the over all drive ability. And the fix is to remove system and use a standard shock system.
The pro offers the KDSS system ( sway bar disconnect) more less. But dosen't offer that X system for the shocks. Because the pro get the upgrade fox system with a lift. That's what I'm getting after many of rabbit holes. Please correct me if I'm wrong. I want to make sure I know what I'm buying. Thanks FYI don't trust sales people when it comes to things like this . They just want to sale you something.

Enjoyed the video. Got a 2020 TRD Off Road (Canadian) in October 2019. Good to see someone with so much experience agrees it was a good buy! I am wondering what you think about the front axle ground clearance. KDSS models have a little less up front even compared to the SR5. I have a few dings in my front skid plate and I have not done a whole lot of off roading yet. An inch or 1.5" in the front I think would give me more confidence getting into the ruts and also look a little better. I hear a spacer kit does not change the ride a whole lot. Definitely agree on not wanting to get bigger tires and kill the on road acceleration.

I don't think you'll have any problems with a 1.5 lift. The spacers do compress the front suspension so the ride is stiffer for sure, whether or not it'll bother you I'm not sure. So that's basically called a levelling kit when you bring the front end up a bit and nothing to the back. it looks pretty good unloaded like that (more of a TRD Pro stance) but once you start loading the back up with gear, the ass end sits lower than the front and can kind of look weird IMO. If It was me adding a 1.5 up front I'd also add a 1 or 1.5 to the back for aesthetics. Right now our trucks rear end is higher when unloaded than the front but when it's loaded it evens out. Congrats on the 4Runner they are awesome 👌
I'm thinking about selling my 09 F150 with the 5.4L and switching to a Jeep Wrangler or 4Runner. I'm just below you in north Idaho and I was wondering how the 4runner performs on the road. Is there enough passing power for twisty mountain roads or hills? My F150 is listed to hit 60 in about 8 seconds and that is enough for me, how does the 4Runner compare?
Hi and thanks for the comment. I had a couple of Fords with the twin turbos and those things were like rocket ships. The 4Runner passes fine you just have to stomp on it. As far as longevity though, the Jeep will be deep in the ground long before you have to even change out a part on the 4Runner 😁🍻 Jeep Chrysler always had issues, not so bad if your just leasing it for 4 years. Sprinkle in Fiat and things get worse
Honestly I was thinking of milking a few more years with my F-150 but considering this is the last year with the tried and true bulletproof engine and transmission, I think I’m going to order a 22 so I have a vehicle that will last me till retirement. And that’s over 15 years away.

We don’t have the 4Runners where I am at but we do Land Cruisers, we have thee in the family and they run and run and run... 4runner is built on the j150 platform of the Land Cruiser. Awesome cars.

@@JimmyMeatwhistle we have both on our market, the 200 series and the 150 series. Awesome cars. We make wine and olive oil, I use mine to haul it all over... never have I ever had a breakdown.
In Canada they renamed them to Lexus LX series. And they're really high-end, different body kits as well. But they're the same trucks. Just not as cool as The original. I wish we had the 70 series Land Cruisers

Enjoyed the video and beautiful scenery. I know it's just an expression but.......to say it isn't even broken in yet at 42k miles simply because they can go 300k is not true. It was broken in after just a few thousand miles. Enjoy!
How is it on long trips? Are they comfortable and quiet? I'm not expecting Lexus SUV ride but I don't want a ride like my gf's RAV4, that RAV4 rides crappy and gives me a headache on long trips. Everything from road noise to harsh ride.
It rides great. I had all terrain tires on mine so it was a little louder than stock.

If the resale value is so high, does it attract alot of buyers? I have been wanting to get used one but if the new and used one only have $5000 difference, I rather get the new
There's some deals to be had but they're not easy to find. They really do hold their value.
Yes, for 5 k more you can get a brand new one. Some 3 even 4 years old with 40k miles are only 5 k less than new
The TRD Off-Road can be had without the Sun Roof and KDDS. All vehicles arrive at the dealership with all fluids filled from the Factory.
Thanks for the info on the fluids, I was wondering about that. In Canada they come fully loaded with sunroof as standard and KDSS.

Some brake systems are hard to bleed correctly. My K1300S gave me problems until I discovered another air bleed screw at the master cylinder. Also, we all know some dealerships are a bit pants. I've started to use a Sealey vacuum pump on my car as it's much quicker and I can do it by myself.
Any reason why you chose not to get a lift? I have a new 4Runner and was debating whether to get a 2inch lift on it and I do have KDSS installed
Hi, thanks for the comment. At the moment I don't feel that I need a lift and I don't really want to change the ride quality. Getting a lift means it's going to stiffen up the suspension and I bounce around enough as it is 👍
@@JimmyMeatwhistle oh thank you for that info. I haven't had a lift on a vehicle in over 20 years so I thought I would ask you since it seems like you have had quite a few vehicles with lifts. Do you think adding a 2 inch lift would cause any issues to a 2021 4runner?
I don't think it would cause any issues, people are lifting them all the time and have been doing it forever. If I was to lift mine, it would be just a 2" lift.

I have a 4th gen, 2006 V6 4.0. 255,000 miles. Leaks nothing, burns nothing, gets 22-24 mpg (I have 31” tires, C class because they are lighter, 26lb wheels).

Never have heard that. My average highway speed is 130kph or 80mph and I have no issues. Of course I've gone faster LOL. Maybe if you have tires unbalanced.
I took a TRD off road for a test drive yesterday and felt the vibration. Thought that it was a wheel balancing issue

After 2 4Runner Limiteds, I've considered and test drove the PRO and the ORP w/KDSS. I am buying the ORP w/KDSS. The ride is far superior to the PRO. I didn't even know what KDSS was, but noticed a huge difference in the way the ORP w/KDSS handled.
Ha ha I am considering a limited trim cuz of full time all wheel drive, shall I lean towards TRD off road? I don't really need the third row, but I thought limited offers better ride quality. Open for your suggestions and owning a limited trim.

@@abhisuri6072 I loved both of my 4runners! Never had a single issue. The only reason I'm not considering the Limited is the look of the front end. The Limited, ORP, and Pro all have three different personalities. It all depends on what makes your heart sing. I had my heart set on a Pro until I drove the ORP that was lifted and had large tires, plus it had the KDSS. We're getting $3,000 off msrp and I can fix it the way I want. Best I could do with a Pro was msrp. Drive them all and compare the front ends, you'll have your answer. Good luck! Let me know what you think of the KDSS. My Jeep has the worst body roll, so for me it was a game changer with the KDSS, it really helps that. Call around and go online, there are deals to be had!

Bought my 21’ TRD ORP w/XP Package, which is pro grill, pro wheels, blackout package, 4wd stick, everything you have without kdss as I didn’t want that. Got my truck a year ago, had 23k miles, now I’ve just crossed 52k, 5k mile oil change intervals; having my tranny fluid drained & filled Friday. Absolutely love this truck! The Car Care Nut channel recommends to put it in 4wd monthly for a little while to keep the actuators from sticking. He’s seen them stick in between gears because the owner never used 4wd until he had to and the actuators went out and he couldn’t drive. I plan on keeping my 21’ TRD ORP forever so I do all the PROPER maintenance so no 10k oil change intervals and no “lifetime tranny fluid” lol I use Nitto Ridge Grapplers and I’m on my second set. Phenomenal tires!! I use the stock tire size on the pro wheels and they work great!! I don’t get much snow here in VA, but I think you’ll love those tires!! Appreciate the video brother!

Fuel mileage is not great that's for sure. I do about 35,000 k a year

It's kind of a beastly vehicle I think it weighs around 5,000 pounds and the 4 litre engines is kind of an old-school engine. But what you'll spend on gas you'll save on longevity and no mechanical problems 😁

Yeah that sounds pretty close, mine pretty much sits at 12.3 and most of my travel is Highway. But I've done some pretty long Highway runs and it's at around 10. I'm at high elevation so that may help

Trd off road does not come with sun roof standard. Not the only 4runner with kdss either

@@JimmyMeatwhistle Interesting, must just be how the dealer region is. I wouldn't think kdss would be. Here in the states, it is rare that a dealership gets more than a couple of those per trim per year
@Tucker Higgins yeah they come totally loaded up, and standard is the kdss, sunroof and so on. The only option I could have got with this is the dashcam and a cargo mat, everything else came standard
You are not going to see much difference between 265 and 275 in off-roading scenarios but added pounds of weight should impact power response, handling, drivetrain wear and decrease mpg. If maximum tire size is a goal, then get a bronco that comes stock with 315s....and then throw 37s on it.
Thanks for the comment. The new Bronco's wont have the resale value of the 4Runner's or the longevity, especially these first gen unproven Bronco's.

GREAT vehicle but.....Gas is about to go to 6 bucks....yep, ypu heard me right....6 bucks. Once Sleepy Joe gets elected (and he will) gas will start rocketing up as he and his cronies begin to dismantle all pipeline deals, fracking etc. By Nov 2021 gas will soar.

Good point, it will be interesting what engine options and MPG improvements they bring to the 6th gen.
