You, Call on the Chemist, have made an error in your reference to “addiction” and “dependence.” Seems that you don’t understand the very important distinction between the 2 concepts. Addiction is when a patient becomes so consumed with getting and taking a substance, that their better judgement becomes impaired, and risks are taken to obtain the drug, even if illegally, that are potentially life threatening. Certainly, someone in the grip of addiction will make choices that cause themselves harm. Please note that someone who is “dependent” on a medication is not automatically addicted to it. In fact, normal functioning may be completely reliant on having and taking a medication on a regular basis. Failure to take such medication will cause withdrawal symptoms (in the case of either Gabapentin or Pregabalin) because there is a physiological reaction to its sudden absence in the body. Further, if the patient stops taking the medication, such withdrawal symptoms will occur whether someone is “addicted” or “dependent.” The drug does not discriminate. All will suffer with these substances that typically cause more harm than good.
Great video. Gabapentin is good for some things, but is way over-prescribed due to a misguided crusade against using opioids. It really is not a good choice for many causes of pain, where properly prescribed opioids are a better method. The anti opioid hysteria that has swept the world has gone too far.
Thank you, very informative video :)
What about spine surgery
user, I think a few week course of opioids would be fine such as Lortab for the first 3 weeks and reduced to lowest dose and then Tramadol and then reduce it to nothing for a total of a couple months for both. Gaba may not give the pain relief after spine surgery that you need.
