US and NATO Disappointed by Turkey's Move: What is going on?

  • Turkey is making significant progress in its nuclear energy ambitions with Russia's state-owned Rosatom taking a leading role. The Turkish government, through its energy minister Alparslan Bayraktar, has confirmed ongoing negotiations with Rosatom for the construction of a second nuclear power plant in Sinop, on the Black Sea coast. This follows the successful collaboration on the Akkuyu nuclear power plant, which is expected to have all four reactors operational by 2028, providing about 10% of Turkey's electricity needs.
In addition to discussions with Russia, Turkey is also in advanced talks with China for a third nuclear power plant in the Thrace region. These negotiations are crucial as Turkey aims to diversify its energy mix and reduce its dependence on fossil fuels, with a target of reaching 20 GW of nuclear capacity by 2050. The country is also exploring the potential of small modular reactors (SMRs) to add 5 GW of capacity by 2050.
NATO has expressed concerns regarding Turkey's collaboration with Russia on nuclear power projects, specifically the Akkuyu nuclear power plant. This partnership is seen as potentially amplifying Moscow's influence within a NATO member state, raising security and strategic stability concerns for the alliance. The construction and future operation of the Akkuyu plant by Rosatom, Russia's state nuclear energy corporation, could give Russia significant leverage over Turkey's energy sector and, by extension, its political decisions.
Experts highlight that the integration of Russian nuclear technology and infrastructure in Turkey might pose risks, such as increased dependency on Russian technology and potential security threats related to nuclear proliferation. There are also apprehensions about the dual-use potential of nuclear technology, which could theoretically be diverted for military purposes, despite Turkey's current focus on civilian energy use.
Additionally, NATO is wary of the broader geopolitical implications. Russia's involvement in Turkey's energy infrastructure could undermine NATO's strategic cohesion and complicate collective defense dynamics. This situation is further compounded by Turkey's pursuit of additional nuclear projects with other countries like China and potential future engagements with the United States.

Türkiye is not in the EU because there is Northern Cyprus Tension between Greece and Türkiye. See; Cyprus Peace Operation. @@atlasworld6420 Your info is lacking.
Northern Cyprus issue predates the Cyprus's EU membership. On the contrary, BECAUSE of the Cyprus + Greek territorial disputes, Greece has been actively supporting Turkiye's application to EU. Hell, Greece is one of *the* biggest supporters of Turkish membership since it would solve literally every single problem between the two countries.
Rising authoritarianism is shown as a concern by those countries that veto Turkish membership, like France. However this is simply an excuse because EU did *not* accept Turkiye throughout the years where they had almost great political ties, economical investments and trust in its democratic actions. Hell, They used to support Erdogan in early 2010 (arguably the most democratic years right before falling into authoritarianism).
The real issue has been made clear to be culture and religious differences. Several spokesperson have been very thorough in explaining why Turkiye will *never* be an EU member, goes all the way back to 90's. Even if Turkiye was Earth's most democratic and just country in a paralel universe, EU would still not accept the application due to large population, difference of culture and religions. They didnt want to outright reject the application because it has been profitable to keep Turkiye at the border, just not in.

Just like with the air defense system, they were not prepared to sell a western product to Turkey until they ordered it from Russia . The only suprise for me is that it took so long to decide , i mean if you are not giving something to your allies they will take it from the enemy this is tragic but it makes sense.

The western alliance is expecting alignment from Turkey without paying attention to Turkey’s security and trade concerns. If Turkey’s concerns are not heard within the alliance, what’s Turkey supposed to do? I witnessed Western alliance’s posture towards Turkey on key security issues past 50 years. Not very friendly at all and there is clearly a lack of respect. That casts a doubt in Turks’ mind that Turkey can count on NATO to defend her. Turkey should remain part of the western alliance and defend universal values, but not with solely being reliant on the west and not with acting like a puppet state. Relatively self sufficient and with diversified security and trade partners, Turkey should play an influential role. This what Turkish people expects their government do.

What is worse than anything else for America, Europe and the European Union is; In the past, Turkish governments and Turkish people were 75%-80% pro-European Union, NATO, and the West. America was a friend, Europe was the ideal level of civilization.
Now only a small political minority still holds this view. The majority see and define Europe, America and NATO as a treacherous, backstabber, insidious, brutal, "pro-terrorist and terrorist lover" and occupying enemy.
Even if relations between governments are improved and some things are put in order by them, they can never improve the public's view and perception of the terrorist West.
