      So true. I discovered them through my mom's old records when I was seven (I'm 48 now), and spent the next few years devouring all the albums and 45s I could get till I had all the group's albums just before my 10th birthday. Their music still brings a lot of joy to me and it makes me so happy to see that joy spread to others as well. I had a dream come true this past September when I was right at the front of the stage for Paul McCartney's "Secret Gig" at Grand Central and it was an experience I'll never forget. Thanks so much for uploading this video!

Any one of those four in any other band would clearly be that band's frontman. That's how great this band was.

  • @penfold7455
    @penfold7455 Před 5 lety +63

    Couple of facts regarding the Beatles and this performance:
    - All four Beatles actually grew up in Liverpool, which is about 200 miles northwest of London (if you saw the movie "Creed", this is the city where Adonis Johnson fought the final bout of that movie); but they had to live in London as that is the big entertainment capital of the UK.
    - The reason they are playing on the rooftop of a building in London is for this: The album they were making at the time was going to be all live tracks, where they would rehearse the songs in the studio (they filmed a documentary about them doing that, where this footage comes from), but then they would put on a live concert (their first in three years at that time). They were considering somewhere in North Africa, a luxury liner in the middle of the Mediterranean Sea, the Roundhouse concert venue in London, and some other ideas. However no one could agree on anything, so they decided to just play on the rooftop of the office building they had for their business Apple Corps so they could all just go home afterwards. Actually later in the set, some of London's police made their way to the rooftop to threaten them with arrest for disturbing the peace.
    - During this time, the members of the band weren't getting along and were kind of apathetic about making new music together. George Harrison (the one with the black guitar who was their lead guitarist) thought that perhaps bringing in a different musician to play with them might help focus everyone better; hence Billy Preston (of "Nothing from Nothing" fame), the brother on the electric piano in this clip

    I once dated a girl that "didn't like the Beatles." Obviously, this meant that I played a bunch of Beatles in the car with her. Time after time, it was "I love this - who is it?" "The Beatles." Or she'd know the song and start singing along, "I love this song - sang it in choir!" "Yeah, well it's The Beatles again." "What?!"

    The Beatles evolved so much over time, from the happy early rock and roll sounds of "I Wanna Hold Your Hand" or "She Loves You" to the much more conceptual ones like "A Day in the Life" or "Strawberry Fields Forever." And while a lot of the genius of the Beatles comes from the Lennon/McCartney songwriting, you can't forget George Harrison's contributions, like "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" and "Something." You might also want to look into "Come Together," "Yesterday," "Let It Be," "In My Life," "Help!", "Eleanor Rigby," and "Revolution."

    These guys are from one of the states where it's legalized, right? It's good to see kids turn on to what was in fact a real revolution. There's so much good music from this era, but the Beatles still towered over everyone, with the possible exceptions of Dylan and Hendrix. It was something to see, something to tell your grandkids about. "I was there." It won't happen again. I always wondered 'who'd be the next Beatles?' in the 70's. Still hasn't happened, and probably never will. They were a perfect storm.

    The Beatles started out as a boy band in an era when all groups were like that, they were produced and controlled by record companies that often gave them songs written by writing groups. The Beatles changed that by taking control of all aspects of their music, writing, arranging etc. They also had an insane curiosity for exploring all new areas of music, sounds, instruments. This is why they are considered one of the greatest bands ever. So many groups attribute them as influences. Amazing catalog with very wide stylistic sound.

    I’m digging that you guys are seriously grooving to this tune! You had mentioned their jackets... it was very cold on the London rooftop that day so John was actually wearing Yoko’s jacket. Also if you notice there’s a keyboard being played in that song because Billy Preston was on the rooftop with them, off to the side.
    I would love to see you guys check out some more Beatles tunes!

    Another good beatles song to listen to would be”let it be”
    It was written by Paul McCartney after his mother died and he basically started drinking himself to death out of grief until she came back to him in a dream and told him to let it be at which point he woke up and instantly wrote the song and worked hard to recover from the loss

    • @SabrinaUmstead
      @SabrinaUmstead Před 5 lety

      Actually Let It Be was written more than 10 years after Paul's mother died. Paul's mother died when Paul was 14, it was one of the things that brought him and John closer together actually, having lost both their mothers as teenagers. You're right about the dream part tho, it's just that instead of comforting him out of grief she was comforting him because of how depressed he was over the break-up of The Beatles, having been in the band since he was a teenager and now almost 30 being hard for him

    what makes the beatles great is its a bunch of super talented on their own people coming together for a bigger cause which is how music t.v. media in general excels...its never one person it everyone whose got talent working together..when talent is separate for other dreams jobs differences whatever a show or band or whatever's quality will dip....its a magic you get when certain people are together you can't recreate without them...and sadly many talented groups in any field split up and grow apart cause they feel empowered to create their own stuff

    I really am glad I watched your review of The Beatles. You picked a great song to listen to and thanks for the respect and homage you all payed The Beatles.There are actually two of The Beatles still alive. Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr, the drummer. Ringo just turned 80, and Paul is not far behind. I was 7 years old when The Beatles first came to the US, and I have been a fan ever since. It is really great to see young people enjoying The Beatles music. Thank you all.
