Something crazy to know about the Beatles. They never recorded any songs after 1969. This roof top concert is in 1969. Here is the crazy thing about the Beatles...when they were done with their catalog of music (and yes over 200 classics in 8 short years) in 1969, the oldest 2 Beatles, Ringo and John were only 29 years old. Amazing, when the Beatles finished their last recorded songs together, not one single Beatle had reached the age of 30
And all those hits were in the space of 7-8 years. Double crazy

@@ricardo_miguel13 Most of the "Let It Be" album was recorded in 1968, and early 1969 with a few sessions in early 1970, being released in May of 1970, after the Beatles had already broken up. "ABBEY ROAD" which was record in April, July and August of '69 and released on Sept.26, 1969., is considered their LAST album.

The "Rooftop Concert" was the last time they played together in public as a band. Bittersweet! The Beatles changed music and in turn altered cultures worldwide. ♥

Interesting that you've spent your whole life wondering why people said they were so great but somehow couldn't spend 3 minutes finding out.
It's not merely that "tons and tons of artists were influenced by their style." They dramatically changed rock music. When they came along, rock was a minor, unpopular musical genre that had just a few sounds, and artists virtually never wrote their own material. After the Beatles first appearance on American television in early 1964, most rock performers went out of business and then a few months later, new groups appeared imitating the Beatles' style. All modern rock groups are descended from those. In fact, had the Beatles not come along when they did, it's even conceivable that rock would have died out.

Try some of their classics like 'Let It Be', 'Come Together', 'Here Comes The Sun', 'While My Guitar Gently Weeps', 'Yesterday', 'In My Life', 'Blackbird', 'Oh! Darling', 'Eleanor Rigby', 'Nowhere Man', 'I'm A Loser', and so many more. Yes they performed well over 200 songs in less than 8 years, most between 1963 and 1969. The Beatles were a genre. They decided early on to always evolve meaning almost none of their songs sound like another. They recorded 305 songs including a few covers in the early days. Over 260 they wrote. They sold over 600 million albums and 1.8 billion singles. No one else has ever come close and they were only recording from 1963 to 1969.
It's crazy to think how much they accomplished in so little time and split before any of them turn 30. This band will forever be remembered
Interesting that you see the influence on Prince. At the tribute to George Harrison, where a group of great guitarists played on ‘While My Guitar Gently Weeps,’ Prince absolutely stole the show. Listen to more Beatles, of course. Greatest band ever!! But, listen to/ watch that as well.
One thing you'll notice with The Beatles is that the sound like a lot of artists that came after. Thats how influential they were.
The funny thing about discussing old Beatles and early Beatles is that they did all of this from 1963-1969. They were done as a band by the end of 1969. You're seeing them very near the end here, at the end of the Let it Be Sessions. They recorded Abbey Road soon after this then hung it up.
But the fun thing with the Beatles is to contrast their various sounds over time. Don't completely ignore the early stuff!
ABSOLUTELY they should NOT ignore the Beatles early music, that's how those of us who lived through it heard them from the start....you need to experience how they evolved and progressed just as we did with each single and album that was released chronologically. DON'T SKIP AROUND and DON"T START at the END of their time as a band, and work backwards....makes NO SENSE to do it that way.
The Beatles recorded 213 songs in a recording career that only lasted 8 years (1962 - 1970). In their native UK this comprised of 12 studio albums, 13 EPs , 1 Double EP and 22 singles.
I was 11 when Beatles broke in USA in 1964. They changed everything, not just music , they changed the World
Im sure someone else said this but Alan Klein was the cause of their final break up. They needed a manager and the Beatles legal argument about Klein split the group, although John had decided to leave much earlier.
from their start in 1957, when John and Paul met they started clicking and now the Beatles have influenced EVERY SINGLE BAND single the 60s.
One great thing about them is that they always have consistently awesome, Melody.
I believe The Beatles last recorded together in August, 1969 and broke up as a band in April, 1970. In maybe eight years or so they changed music and culture around the world. I’m not sure if there’s any group that’s come after them that hasn’t been influencing some way by them. ✌️❤️

Some good examples of their early stuff (circa 1962-1964): 'She Loves You', 'And I Love Her', 'I Saw Her Standing There', and 'I Feel Fine'
Next came their "folky" period where they became a bit more mature(circa 1964-165). Some good examples: 'Nowhere Man', 'Help!', 'Norwegian Wood (This Bird Has Flown)', and 'Girl'
Next came more maturity and development with their acid/lsd period where their stuff became more complex/experimental, drug-influenced, and psychedelic (circa 1966-1967): 'Here, There, and Everywhere', 'Tomorrow Never Knows', 'Eleanor Rigby', 'She's Leaving Home', 'I Am The Walrus', and 'Strawberry Fields Forever'
Finally came their later stuff which became more mature, also blusier, and explored more diverse genres (circa 1968-1970): 'While My Guitar Gently Weeps'', 'Here Comes The Sun', 'I Want You (She's So Heavy)', and 'Let it Be'.
YOU HAVE to include on that list of yours "LOVE ME DO" (their FIRST SINGLE, which went to # 20 in the UK) , 'PLEASE PLEASE ME" ( their first UK # 1 in 1963) and "I WANT TO HOLD YOUR HAND" which was the FIRST single we in the USA heard by the BEATLES and immediately shot up to # 1 in January 1964. "I WANT TO HOLD YOUR HAND" is what STARTED "Beatlemania" here in the USA. SO THAT is an IMPORTANT song for those of us here in the States. It sounded SO different from what we were used to hearing at the time, and as they say, "THE REST IS HISTORY."
I'm 65, so this is my wheelhouse..I literally cannot remember a time in my life where the Beatles weren't involved..It's extremely hard to describe just what an impact they had on the people of my generation..From the time they touched down onto American soil, in '64, there was an undeniable systemic shift in the earth...This may sound like hyperbole, but anyone my age will testify to the same, even if they ultimately weren't "Beatle Fans"...To put it into perspective, Michael Jackson was a mere blip on the screen, in comparison..Frank Sinatra, Elvis and Chuck Berry immediately were relegated to spectators, along with the rest of the world...Sounds like exaggerated BS, but only those who witnessed it can attest to it...A phenomenon that will not ever come again..Of that I am certain...I could go into detail, but it would take a week.

@ SJD57 I am 75 and I agree with every thing you said, and I will testify to that, as I too, lived through those years. There music is the soundtrack of my life and always WILL be. On December 26 of this year (2023) it will be 60 years since I first heard "I WANT TO HOLD YOUR HAND" on my clock-radio. Even after 60 years, I NEVER tire of listening to their music, watching their movies "A HARD DAY'S NIGHT," "HELP!," "MAGICAL MYSTERY TOUR," "YELLOW SUBMARINE," and "LET IT BE." I also never tire of watching their music videos (they were called "promo films" back then), documentaries on them, etc. There is SO MUCH BEATLES documentaries to be found on line, as well as for their solo careers, interviews and videos.
@@patticrichton1135 Since, my musical tastes have evolved, but I can say that it will always go back to the time, in '63/'64 (Shea, and Ed Sullivan) sitting with my older brother (huge Elvis fan) and my neighbor friend (new huge Beatles fans), sitting on our backyard picnic table, arguing with my brother over who was better!..My friend and I were 7.. My brother was 4 yrs. older...After a while my brother jumped the Elvis ship, and came aboard, and to this day is even a bigger Beatle fan than I ever was. Still, I remain a big Beatles fan, and always will.

As a seventy-something man, I grew up with the group in the sixties. It's a recognized fact that when the Beatles arrived in America in 1964, they not only influenced music but the entire social landscape of the generation. This was their last live performance on the rooftop of Apple Records in 1969. Lennon's love song to Ono.

The Beatles were influenced by mostly Black American RnR and blues. So Muddy Waters, Howlin Wolf, Chuck Berry, Little Richard, B.B.King and more. With Elvis and Buddy Holly as well. They took that Music and put layers on it and experimented continually with new instruments and acted like sponges to the Renaissance of RnR in the UK and America. They did cover a lot of Genres and this is most displayed in their "White Album". It has Blues, RnR, Heavy Metal, Experimental, Psychedelic, Country and Western, 1920's style, even a song to put Kids to Sleep (They tried to cater to all Ages). Mostly done on 4 Tracks (Mono)with only the last few Albums done in 8 Tracks and Stereo. Alan Klein Split the Beatles as he was trying to Financially ruin them and only Paul realised it so had to go through the Courts to limit the Damage.
I think they were the opening act for Little Richard when he went to the U.K. . Paul got a lot of him soulful yells for him.

They were to the 60’s what Led Zeppelin was to the 70’s. Two albums you must listen to for perspective would be the red album “the Beatles 62-66” and the blue album “the Beatles 67-70”. They were pretty much the pioneers of the cultural change. As they changed and evolved as a band and as individuals, society was changing with them. True story. Every song on those albums are amazing and listening to it is like walking through the timeline of rock and roll. Enjoy the journey.

You need to listen to the Beatles' "I Want You, She's So Heavy." It's absolutely fantastic.
In my opinion to understand the 'greatness' of The Beatles one must watch the Anthology dvds, because much of there greatness falls with their story and how the production/promotion/music changed the music world. Their music is great too, but sure does not tell the whole story.
@ tigerpinky, oh you are SO RIGHT about that. It WAS MORE than "just" their music. They were the WHOLE package! Four attractive guys, who were intelligent, witty, charming, funny, unbelievable song writers, fantastic harmonies and musicianship. Not only did they change the music world, they changed the culture, fashion, hairstyles, and attitudes. Name me one other rock group that was in the Newspapers DAILY for the entire year of 1964 and still had a lot of articles about what they were doing through their whole career together. I KNOW, because I went through the papers EVERYDAY and cut them out. I STILL have those articles in a large box. The day they arrived in the US o Feb 7, 1964 for the first time, they made the FRONT PAGE HEADLINES in newspapers all over the US. Some of them simply said in BIG letters "THEY"RE HERE!" Their group name wasn't even mentioned! Everyone already KNEW who "THEY" was in the Headlines. It really is hard to explain to people how BIG it was...nothing like that ever before or since....not for a rock group.

I have seen that one, it's ok but there are inaccuracies in it, and the Beatles history is impossible to convey in 20 minutes.

NO! 1969, JANUARY!!! None of the Beatles at this stage in 1969 were yet 29yrs old!!! In just over 7 years as the very famous Beatles, since 1962 they wrote and recorded well over 200 songs!! Released 12/13 albums in that time and 22 singles (UK) and 13 EP's all in that 7 yrs!!! With almost everything going to number 1 with one or two records that hit between number 2 to 4 or so.

Prince was heavily influenced by the Beatles, his wonderful weirdness, his brilliant eclectic tastes, his flouting of restricting cultural, gender, "race" and ethnic borders and boundaries, it's at one with the Beatles' ambition and multicultural affinities. And it is NO accident that the best, the most iconic guitar performance of a Beatles classic is none other than Prince's now rightfully legendary solo on the late Harrison's While My Guitar Gently Weeps.
The Beatles literally invented the concept of a rock band. Sure, musicians would gather together to play Rock since the 50's, but it was mainly session players hired to play a song written by a composer and a lyricist, the old-school way. The Beatles were the first bunch of dudes that really wrote their songs, played their gigs and recorded their music themselves. The times were much different back then, it's hard to fathom.

Late era Beatles is pretty Legendary
So are the early Beatles legendary, THAT is the music that GOT THEM KNOWN and made them EXTREMELY POPULAR ALL OVER THE WORLD. If it WASN'T for that EARLY music which started it all, their later music wouldn't exist.

There are two periods in pop music history: BEFORE and AFTER Beatles. The most important music of the period in which they emerged were them, Motown, and Bob Dylan, and there's no such thing as pop/rock group (which Motown and Dylan were not) that did not either emerge FROM the Beatles, or radically change as a result OF the Beatles. But you'd have to put yourself back into a 1963 musical environment in order for the full effect of the change they effected to be felt. You either have to be of a certain age or a TRUE music historian to place yourself in that moment when they changed the entire world, musically. Their influence cannot POSSIBLY be overestimated.

Among the many things that the Beatles did to influence the overall climate in the US was to bring Black music to ears that had been ignoring it previously. They would do covers of Black R&B classics. Their album 'Beatles '65' was heavily influenced by the 'Black sound'. In fact, they refused to play venues where Whites and Blacks were segregated. Blacks were typically had assigned areas towards the backs of auditoriums or confined to balconies. So, realizing the amount of money they'd lose, they bent their 'rules' and allowed Blacks to mingle with Whites.

Yoko Ono was NOT in the band, she was John Lennon's wife. It was only John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr (Richard Starkey, his real name).
Again, other reactors have shown this full video, no problem. You surely could have played more than just a few seconds! This was January 30, 1969 on the roof of their Apple Corp offices on 3 Saville Row in London, England. So it was just the beginning of 1969. They had broken up by 1970. "SOMETHING" was the video you were talking about Tasha, that had their wives at the time, in it. George Harrison wrote "Something" for his wife Pattie Boyd Harrison (who you will see in the video).. I hesitate to suggest more Beatles songs if you are only going to play about 16 seconds of it! No point! LOL.

Yes, indeed. Apparently, we've been hearing The Beatles all of our life and didn't know it. " Come together" is a great example of that. I've heard it through out the years and had no idea it was the Beatles.
You can hear (and briefly see) Billy Preston on Keys here..An UNBELIEVABLY gifted keyboard man, who was briefly considered for the 5th Beatle spot. (if you don't take producer George Martin into account, of course.) McCartney didn't go for it...I want you to understand something..Basically, the Beatles most productive years were from '64 to '70, (when they officially broke up. On my 13th birthday, 4/10/70 coincidentally)..In those 6 short years, they wrote over 200 songs, and produced 13 albums!!..Need I say more?
