IN THE MOOD FOR COIMBRA: PART 1 | Historic University City, One of the Oldest in Europe | Portugal

- Coimbra is historic, alluring, enigmatic and even monumental, as this city was once a capital of medieval Portugal, when it was newly born nation-state during the early 12th century. It is also often overlooked by visitors, cast under the shadows of the more popular cities of Lisbon and Porto. But when you do make a proper visit and get to know the city better, you'll be enamoured, like the way Coimbra cast its spell on me.
This is a city where king, queens and the royal court used to rule the kingdom of Portugal, where great poets, writers and academics create masterpieces, where architects and artists built monuments, with the crowning glory that is the Coimbra University, Portugal's oldest academic institution and one of Europe's (and the world's) oldest universities.
Come and join me as I show you beautiful Coimbra, and learn about its significance in Portuguese (and European) history and culture.
Hope you enjoy this travel video! ⭐ Stay tuned for PART 2 of IN THE MOOD FOR COIMBRA, where I share to you one of the heartbreaking and tragic of all love stories, set in the city. Plus, we take you on a side trip to nearby must-visit places near Coimbra. 💛

I am originally from Coimbra - and this is brilliantly photographed and filmed... And nice driving in the uptown!
Thank you so much! Especially that you're from Coimbra, this means a lot. Glad you enjoyed the video. ✨
As a local, can you please clarify HOW to correctly pronounce Coimbra please, as I have heard a variety of ways and would love to know how it SHOULD be pronounced please? Cheers from Australia
My mom took me around Coimbra when I was little.. Early 80's. She used to tell me tales of long ago.. I miss my mom.
The traditional Coimbra's meal is CHANFANA which is goat meat cooked in red wine during all the night in a special way.
What is beautiful too is the wood 'a Mata Nacional do Choupal' with areas for sports and to eat, etc.
In Coimbra, there's also:
* the 'Observatorio geofisico e astronomico',
* 'O FORUM' one of the biggest european shopping centers with a lot of different restaurants on the top of it,
* and much more
Love your In The Mood series on Portugal! We are planning a month trip and using your CZcams series as a gorgeous guide! 🙏🏻 After watching about 10 different videos may I suggest your voice volume is too low for your melodic sounding voice overs and the music slightly loud.
Your editing, drone shots , the language in your descriptions in your videos has added city after city to our trips! Thank you❤
Wow so beautiful!!!
The video quality alone deserves atleast a million more viewers. Thank you for showing Portugal to everyone. Cheers :)
You're very kind, thank you! It is my pleasure to capture and showcase Portugal in video form, I'm truly grateful to be living here.
Gorgeous video - Coimbra is stunning - another jewel of beautiful Portugal.
Very nice City
It's so magnificent in its own classic way. Definitely worth exploring!
You definitely have the best “Portugal about” channel!!! Beautiful 👌🏻
Ah, thank you! I don't know about the best, just trying to be authentically appreciative of Portugal in a way I know how. Nonetheless, really glad you think so! Thank you for the great comment!
This is the best video I’ve see about Coimbra. Thank you very much! Great job!
Thank you so much!
For the past 2 months, I've been delving really deep into Portugal and Portuguese literature and culture. It captivated me with how unique it is, the expression saudade for example. But its exquisite architecture found in Manueline and Pombaline also blew my mind. I don't think there would be a more ideal spot for me to live in, if I would be a bit more daring and wealthy. Thank you for showing me so much of Portugal, perhaps that longing for something that's absent is indeed Portugal.
Cheers from Poland, hoping to see you there soon enough:)
I'm glad you like Portugal. A country with an imposing history. We, the portuguese are unique and for that we are respected all across the globe as the ancient sailors that opened and gave new worlds to the world. I'm a Godfather of a luso-polish young girl that was born in Portugal but her mother is from Poznan. I allways loved polish people. You and we used to be the real defenders of catholicism and cristianity in the world. That's why we, apart of being far fisically, are so close.
Greetings.
You mirror my own Heart desires...if wishes were horses ......beg...rs....will ride🥰. A country l would love to visit.....so full of interesting historical sights and well kept beautiful cities.🌹
Oh Janz! I've not made it to Coimbra yet, but I've seen several videos on it but NOTHING can compare to this. You've really captured something incredibly special here. Truly Beautiful!!
I love to share your videos too because there is never anything crass or political in them. Just beauty and historical facts and special experiences.
(I'd like to say, when you said "for our Christian Friends", you were so completely respectful to everyone here)
Cannot wait for part 2!! xx
Oh, and your travel companion is simply lovely. Just before you took your first bite of those pastries I thought... it's not easy to eat something like that without getting the powdered sugar everywhere. You did well... but yes, we women know the art of it.
I definitely backed out of a few tight spots while I explored the old-small towns of Portugal :)
Thank you, Jen! I'm super grateful of your wonderful words always. My goal is to put people in the mood for a time and place, and experience a destination soulfully, without politicising it.
@@JenShea Therese is the most DELIGHTFUL travel companion, a dream to travel with. And definitely the classy eater between us both. I'm such a messy eater, it's unbelievable. 😂
Janz - YOU are the Best! Not only are your videos aesthetic Marvels, but they are the most informative and well-researched of ANY Travel videos I have seen on CZcams! You should be very proud of your fine work! Also - Your Great Love for Portugal is not just apparent in your exquisite visual presentation, but also in your accurate, and natural pronunciation of the Portuguese Language! - Parabens!!! As for Coimbra...I made a trip through the city MANY Years ago on a road-trip from Santiago de Compostela, through Porto, and down to Sintra & Lisbon. We did not spend much time there - most of it in the lush Botanical Gardens. Obviously - That was our Loss, and I truly hope to rectify this in the near future...after this horrible Pandemic subsides. I am a US Citizen, but I have spent significant time in Lisbon over the years. Portugal is - in my opinion, THE Most Beautiful and Welcoming place in Europe! Thank You for reminding me of that! - also, I hope at some point you can document the Incredible Creative Art and Music scene in both Lisbon, and Porto. Lisbon has one of the most energized, and expansive Experimental/Avant-Garde/Free-Jazz communities in Europe! Please check-out the Portuguese Label: Clean Feed, and artists such as Luis Lopes, Rodrigo Amado, and the fantastic percussionist - Pedro Melo Alves. There is more to Portugal then just Beautiful Architecture, Sublime Seafood, and FADO! - Obrigado & Abracos!
Hey, Mark! Thanks for your amazing comment. I am only humbled by your praises, I wanted to share my vision of thoughtful travel documentaries and capture the essence of places that I visit, and I'm just very happy that audience like you appreciate it. Thank you, truly. I try my best showcase the positive things this country could show, and while my videos aren't perfect, they're meant from the heart. Thanks a lot for the recommendations, too. I'm a jazz listener, so that definitely strikes up my interest, and will hopefully someday create a music episode of Lisbon! ✨ Take care always! Muito obrigado!
I am a student at the University of Coimbra and it is so gratifying to see it being shown to the world!
The University of Coimbra is magical! I would have loved if you showed the students with their academic clothes walking around the city, since that is the hallmark of Coimbra.
The video is fantastic, you managed to show the essence of the city, congratulations!
Thank you so much, Carolina! Next time I'll visit Coimbra, I will capture the student life as it's something I'm fascinated as well. ✨
Wow the quality of your videos is seriously on another level. The amount of thoughtfulness and effort, astounding. All my support! Portuguese cities should hire you for tourism
Interesting architectures. Its like you turn back in time. Amazing sites. Historicaĺ rich. Food looks delicious. Your video lovely. Superb narration.
Thank you so, so much. Appreciate the wonderful words!
Whoa this is beautiful
I have been watching all your videos, of late. Beautiful work. I am particularly impressed with your correct pronunciation of Portuguese.
Can't wait for this one...
You make amazing videos man, I'm hooked. Thanks for shooting my country and make it shine.
Very well done! One of the best videos on Coimbra that I've ever seen. You did a fantastic job in capturing the spirit of the place and synthesizing many practical sites as well.
lovely documentary, great pace and good mix of information. Defs have Coimbra on my list now!
Thank you, darling Sandra! I have a feeling you will enjoy Coimbra -- as you love these kind of romantic cities filled with stories.
OMG Janz that final part left us with tears of joy 😊 we are so proud of our hometown! I am sorry I didn't have the chance to guide you here, would have loved that! Will stay tuned for the 2nd part of the video, I can't wait to see it through your lens. Just a little correction: Coimbra was the 3rd largest city of Portugal for a long time, indeed, but it's not anymore (since the 90s). Other than that, all the information was spot on and the footage - as we've got used to by seeing your videos - is simply fantastic!
Your hometown is so beautiful. I seriously cannot wait to visit again! Regarding size, my source said 3rd largest, so Coimbra is 4th now? I wonder what's the third, Braga, perhaps? Thanks for correcting me. I'll share that in the comments. And thank you so much for your support here, I am smitten by Coimbra, I can't wait to go back. 💛
Very glad to hear that you are happy to see your city through my lens! 💛
Thanks 🙂 OK let us know when you come back! According to the 2018 sensus we were on the 16th position!! Lisboa, Sintra, Vila Nova de Gaia, Porto, Cascais, Loures, Braga, Matosinhos, Amadora, Almada, Oeiras, Gondomar, Seixal, Guimarães, Odivelas and then Coimbra 😅😅😅 we've been surpassed by all main cities near Lisbon and Porto!
@@GOWalksPortugal I will definitely let you know! And I think you're referring to municipalities, no? I was curious more on what's considered "cities". Sintra, for example, isn't a city. Is that correct?
@@inthemoodforlife_official yes those are the numbers for municipalities but Sintra is a city 😊 complicated territory rules.
So Beautiful ❤️ can't wait for the next one 😊
I absolutely love this! Can t wait for part two. I seriously want to emigrate to Portugal it looks amazing. Thanks Janz :)
Where are you from ?
Same here 🤗
Gorgeous! I’m doing some research for my Dad’s upcoming trip to Lisboa and Algarve. Now I want to come to Conimbriga for 2 weeks!
Your work, here and in other videos I have seen is exquisite. Can’t thank you enough for your efforts.
I love your videos! Thank you for beautiful Coimbra!
Wonderful descriptions, informative and interesting. Enjoyed the restaurant experiences and recommendations.
I‘m so glad I found your channel, your videos are just amazing and so inspiring!
Excellent work! Thank you! I enjoyed this video very much!
Beautiful videos. Thank you❤️🇺🇸
Fantastic videos, cannot believe you only have eight thousand subscribers.
We are going to Coimbra in October and your video was the best we found hands down
love to see persons like u come to our city!! im a university student and i loved the way u showed up my city of birth i know it was beatifull but oh man this give diferent prespective
edit: we have alot of traditions related to univ, "queima das fitas" "latada" "praxe" beeing rhe last one canceled due covid it rly gets another prepective!!
Thank you so much, I cannot wait to go back and visit again. And yes, hopefully next year, those traditional festivals will resume and I'd be glad to explore them.
So beautiful 😍 I can't wait to see part two
Superb work. Made me appreciate even more a city where I've lived in for 23 years. It was a pleasure to meet you, ( Bruno from Kabra Velha)
Hello, Bruno! It was a pleasure to meet you, too, and we enjoyed Kabra Velha very much and your wonderful personality. Thanks for having us here, and great to hear you enjoyed this video tribute to your beautiful city. 💛
You are a pure genius!!!! Some of the most breathtaking travel videos I have ever seen. Thank you so much ❤️🙏🏻❤️👏
So well done! Amazing city!
Using your own words your videos are becoming sublime. Love your historical documentaries, so good, can't wait for the next
Thank you, Luis! Glad you enjoyed my travelogue. :)
@@PACMAN5130 This is so amusing. For someone preaching about accuracy, you've got something so basic inaccurate -- my name. I'm not Jason. I'm Janz, if you must know.
Another fantastic video, Janz!!…🥰🥰🥰. I live in Portugal, and I already have visited some of this places, but after I saw the videos, I just want to cross the door of my house, and get revisited again!!… Congratulations to you, and to your team. EXCELLENT job!!!… 👏👏👏
Janz, I'm a new subscriber, just having discovered your excellent channel. We are US citizens recently retired and now reside in Porto, from which we shall explore Portugal in depth and decide upon a permanent location. Your vids are informative and compelling. They are reflective of your passion for the history, art, and natural beauty of this amazing country. Well done, you.
This is incredibly well crafted and shot. It beautifully paints Coimbra and surrounding, I am now heading to watch part 2! If you accept a constructive suggestion, I'd try to make the narration a bit clearer (either turn up the narration track or work on some EQ to bring it up a bit. Alternatively lower the music a bit while you're talking) as sometimes I feel I am struggling to hearing you. Please don't see this as a criticism, the video is stunning. :)
I was debating whether or not to include Coimbra on my upcoming Portugal trip and this video fully convinced me!
I’m planning on going there late 2022. Your documentary’s are fantastic.
Your videos are so amazing. This looks like something I would watch on Netflix. Keep it up and post more videos. I'm sure you'll have a ton of more subscribers in the near future!
You're very kind, thank you! Appreciate it a lot. 😊
Ah, what a historical monument as its own - Coimbra! Thank you for the great insight! Loving the joyful combination of vlog & document. Looking forward to the pt.2!
Thank you! Can't wait to share to you Part 2 x
Beautifully done!!! You two are amazing photographers, editors, on camera personalities and top notch. I subscribed, I’m a big fan now after one show.
Thank you, that's very kind of you to comment in such a way! Very happy to have gained an audience such as you, appreciate it truly 💙
Great video plan to move there in a few years so thanks.
Bravo! You are truly a great maker of perfect videos of Portuguese cities.
Thank you for your beautiful impressions!
Thank you! So kind of you to write this. My videos are not perfect, they could be better still! But I'm always learning, and hopefully doing better every time. Thank you for watching and appreciating my work. 💙
Your narration and video content are incredibly good; vastly superior to just about any channel I've seen.
Well done!
Nice video, you should touch on the musical significance of the city, keep up the good work
Thank you, Manuel! I've yet to explore the Coimbra Fado, I'll make sure to learn more about that next time I visit. Thanks again!
Amazing work..God bless you
thank you so much! 💛
Having the same question in mind - "Porto or Lisbon?," brought me to your channel. Impressed is an understatement. You know history very well. I like the witty scripting and well-placed humor. And the cinematography and choice of apt music is just superb. Watching your videos almost feels like watching a history and architecture versions of David Attenborugh's nature documentaries. Keep it up! - Francis (Makati City)
Fabulous video. Thanks very much. Love your presenting style and narration
Thank you! Appreciate your comment!
Your narration made me decide to go to coimbra. Going to Portugal in sept.
Great video
Hope tourism for Portugal can see this
Amazing video Janz! I laughed so hard at the driving challenges and the messy eater part! 🤣
Thank you, dear! You are a JOY, always! Watching you drive around Coimbra's medieval old town is such a riot haha. And between us, I'm definitely the messy eater. 😂 And I talk with my mouth full. Not a good example for the kids. Haha
Wao! What a true picture of a beautiful city of Coimbra. I love your videos and want to make a Urdu versions of your videos. :)
Janz ...Salamat for providing a stunning and informative travelouge. As always the production value is top notch. I’m a convert 😍. A great way to escape the covid isolation and planting the seed for soulful travel. Fingers crossed friends and I are headed to Lisbon, Porto, Sintra, and now thanks to you and this video, add Coimbra to the list. October 2021 can’t come soon enough. Thank you for sharing your vision and passion. Till then be safe, be well and may opportunities that scare us become opportunities for us to be brave.
You should definitely stay a few days in Coimbra. There's much to do and see here and around 😉
My absolute pleasure, I hope one day you'll see it in your own eyes!
Janz, I am very deeply touched to see this great video of yours! It's just to amazing to miss! It's a while ago that I went to my birthplace and thanks to this great videos I had the great honor to be there again! Sometimes is really good to see our own city through the eyes of the tourists to feel even more love and pride of the place we come from. Seeing your vlog made me even more proud and thankful to God to give me the honor of being born in Coimbra. Even it's an old story for me, to see again the tragic love story of Pedro and Inês and the way you told it ... it really touched me! I was already, but now, I'm even more In The Mood for Coimbra!
Tiago, thanks a lot for the thoughtful comment, super appreciate it. Grateful to have an audience such as you who appreciates the effort in giving tribute to beautiful places like your city. I was enamoured by Coimbra and could only do my best to showcase it in the video in the most splendid way possible. Glad you enjoyed this! ✨
@@inthemoodforlife_official You are more than welcome! And I am grateful for this great video about this great city! I really saw your passion in every detail indeed! Keep up this amazing work! 🙏🏼🙌🏼
Amazing imagery.
I'm going to hop on a train ride for Coimbra next time I return
Braga prays, Coimbra studies, Porto works and Lisbon spends
What an awesome video! A great tribute to our city :)
Thank you, loved your city, and can't wait to visit again!
I have been to Coimbra and this video makes it seem so much more beautiful and interesting than it actually is when you are there (so good job? haha). It is kind of interesting, just like the Instagram phenomenon, you are sold this magical story and you imagine it so perfect and pristine. Not to say Coimbra sucks, at all, but ..yeah, you highlighted in HD the nice parts, and it makes people imagine a perfect life they could have if only they could live there, but it is not quite like that in reality.
Glad you both enjoyed my hometown!!
I did! And I can't wait to visit again!
This seems to be a very interesting and beautiful place, I hope I can visit sometime in the future when all this is over. Seeing and sharing places like this is why I love traveling and make videos so much!
Hey, Janz! I love your storytelling and the way you combine the scenes. One friend of mine recommended your channel as an example, and I was really curious.
Long story short, I'm now on a tour of Portugal, been to Coimbra for couple of hours and now I'm in Porto.
I'm a filmmaker myself making similar videos like you do, and for the first time yesterday I was considering changing my shooting style as I'm exhausted every day I carry my gear. I'm really curious about your setup. What do you carry with you and how do you use it?
Thank you one again for the video! Would be really cool to drag a coffee one day!
Best,
Chris
What a great video! I truly enjoyed it from beginning to end. However, if I may say something, I just thought the music was a bit too loud at times, making it harder to understand eveything you were saying.... and I really didn't want to miss a word!
Thanks for sharing! We will soon be residents, and this was a fantastic introduction to what we hope to be our new home. Small critique on sound and narration. When coming back from speaking, the music db compared to speaking is a bit strong. Other than that, top-notch!
Thank you! I wish you a super enjoyable stay in Coimbra. ✨
Well done 👏
Thank you!
Amazing how the car still reigns in most portuguese cities. All those cars in front of that beautiful medieval church...
Coimbra❤️
Fantastic, I am hoping to go in November for my birthday. The place you stayed looks fab. Can I have the details please? Dxx
Thanks
Loving your video thank you. May I ask if you were happy with where you stayed up near the cathedral, as I plan on exploring there next year too. I always think it’s crucial to choose the best location. Cheers from Australia
Thanks very much! Glad you love it. Yes, I was happy staying right near the cathedral, you’re at the historical centre, everything is walkable. Just be mindful that this is on top of the hill, so there’s some climbing to do when you get back up. Parking around this area is very tricky though due to limited spaces. Probably best to park near the university. One thing to mention is that since it’s a university town, especially during the Queima das Fitas festivities, there’ll be lots of singing and party noises around this area. So if you prefer peace and tranquility, try staying near the park or other side of the river (or least away from the university grounds). Hope that helps.
Coimbra 💪
Very nicely done. Did you have to ask permission to use a Drone? Or you can use without one?
You must have been Portuguese in another life!!!
Come on, that passageway isn't that narrow. I've driven through it drunk and never touched anything xD Amazon video, you should get an award for this. It makes me love my city even more!
Haha it was so narrow! I've seen a few cars struggle to get through. And thank you so much for the wonderful comment, glad you enjoyed the video ✨
Very informative and lushly shot video, but perhaps consider lowering the volume of the background music ? It is difficult to decipher your narration.
Very nice job, people. (Content and video work) SUB-SCRIIIIBED
If you come here again you should research and listen to some Canção de Coimbra (yeah is fado but it's a little different than all the Lisbo stuff, more melancholic i guess). But please don't go just "FADO!", try to meet some local artists and musicians, and go/try to meet folks from the Repúblicas (frat / fraternity, some of them go waaaaay back and still exist). Also check Rádio Universidade de Coimbra, RUC for short.
Oh well, there's a lot going on is this little old town and even I learned something new with your video (nd i was born and always lived here!). Cheers mate keep it up, saw an ad for this on instagram and that's why i came here :p
I have finally made it here it is quite intoxicating I mean to stay, I have my house to restore in Grocinas and I will vlog all of that. This is like being in love with two women Portugal at ang Philippinas.
What's d name of your apartment or is it hotel? Thanks
Would someone in their 30s live in Coimbra? What is life in a university town like?
YOU COULD MAKE A VIDEO ABOUT HOW HARRY POTTER WAS INSPIRED IN PORTUGAL SPECIALLY IN COIMBRA AND PORTO WHEREJ.K.ROWLING USED TO LIVE ...
Beautiful video!

Beautiful video, but the music was more loud than your voice. Hard to to understand.
I have walked every inch of these videos I adore Portugal and my new home Coimbra Province and I will be back soon. I speak Tagalog and now I am learning Portuguese like a man possessed and I recently decided to speak it perfectly modelling myself on your English. Another couple of weeks and I am back home again.

I am here now agora.
Nice video and script. However, it’s really hard to hear your voice with such loud background music.
Thank you for the feedback! This sounds fine on my speakers and headphones, but I'll take your feedback.
You sound so Filipino!
Well I fell down a ravine in Grocinas so I went to the Philippines have a new wife so I will be heading back to fix up that house for us.
Fun fact: 12:48 if you pause the video you Will see that the tower clock on this position reveals the face of an owl.
I didn't quite realise that! Thanks for pointing out!
Need to turn down the music volume a bit. It drowns out the flowery commentary.
Well produced video but why pronounce the city's name as queen-bre (like in timbre)? It's a Portuguese city, not English.
Nice video. Bad music. A little sound track editing is in order here
0:15 Braga is the 3° biggest city, coimbra 4°.
Coimbra: ~100 mil
Braga: ~150 mil
Filming and taking photos is prohibited inside the library.
My first question would be: why did you have a car? My second question is: why bore us with your self-indulgences.
Is there a city in Portugal that’s not beautiful ?
