Is there any actual EVIDENCE that Rickson is so good, other than all the mythologizing and marketing around him? Rickson is basically a corporate brand at this point. They even put his name in the Kama JJ logo. That makes sense from a business perspective, I understand you have to make your money somehow. But if you look at his actual competitive BJJ record, in his entire career he defeated a grand total of five people.
Compare that to Gordon Ryan, who in a 48 hour period this September beat almost twice as many elite competitors as Rickson did in his entire life. For some reason, Rickson spent all his prime years turning down fights for various reasons. It seems like Rickson´s main goal was to preserve his mystique, rather than test himself against the best competition he could find. That is the polar opposite of what Ryan has done, or Keenan or anyone else who have always been willing to fight anyone they could to prove their BJJ.
Why did Rickson refuse to fight Sakuraba? It seems like the reality is that Rickson knew if he fought and lost, the Gracie family would lose the last bit of their aura of invincibility, dealing a huge blow to the power of their brand. From a corporate perspective, no doubt he made the right move. But from the perspective of a true warrior, a true competitor, Rickson did the opposite of what one should do: always look to test yourself against the best competition you can find. Countless competitors have done that, from Ryan to Keenan to Roger to Buchecha to Marcelo etc. No doubt Rickson is a great man and a great martial artist. But in terms of the real level of his jiu jitsu, we will never know how it compares to top competitors, because he spent his entire career avoiding any fight that would actually test it.

@@KamaJiuJitsu You prove my point. When asked for evidence, all you can give me is a video of someone talking. Not Rickson actually competing against anyone, just someone running their mouth.
Is that what your martial art is based on? People talking? People used to talk a lot before the first UFC. There were thousands of traditional martial artists who claimed to be able to maniuplate qi, to do secret death touches, so powerful that no one could even survive a fight with them. But then the Gracies came along, and they were so confident in their skils, they decided to answer the question in a way no one could deny. All those traditional ´masters´ got taken down and choked out, and that is the reason BJJ has spread the way it has. Because people respected real results, not just fairy tales.
It was the Gracies themselves who offered the famous challenge: if you think you can beat us, come and prove it in front of the world. And in the end, so ironically, it was Sakuraba offering that challenge to Rickson, a challenge he turned down.
If Rickson chose not to compete for personal reasons, I can certainly respect that. Competition is not an obligation. If your heart isn´t really into it, it´s probably better not to step in the ring. But what I can´t respect is Rickson making the choice not to compete, and then spending decades claiming that he is superior to those who did compete, who did test themselves. Everyone from Gordon Ryan to Marcelo Garcia, to other Gracies like Roger, who did step into the ring and accept the results win or those. They did so much more than talking.
At the end of the day, that is what martial arts are based on: real results. Fighting the best competition available. Testing yourself, win or lose. You can´t deny that for whatever reason, Rickson chose not to do that. And because he made that choice, he has absolutely no right to arrogantly pose the way he does, looking down on people who have a hundred times the record he does. I don´t care how many great rolls he has had behind closed doors, going out and doing what Gordon Ryan or Marcelo did in ADCC is an accomplishment in a different universe. Saying that he would beat Fedor in MMA, or dominate the ADCC doesn´t make him a champion, it just puts him in the same silly league as the Steven Segals or Frank Duxes of the world. Coming from the family he does, Rickson should show proper respect to men who take on the burden of true competition. Even Helio called him out on his imaginary record!
So if Rickson isn´t about to sign up for any jiu jitsu tournaments, he should take the other honorable option still available to him: keep teaching his classes, but when it comes to talking about who would win a real fight, respectfully shut his mouth.

Uh... it’s not a video of anyone talking.
Face it, nothing will convince you otherwise.
Sad thing is, you’ve NEVER trained with the Grand Master himself so you’ll 1) never know you’re FOS, 2) never know what true greatness in the art is.
That’s ok. I still like you.

When you award belts to your students, do you award them based on what the students claim they can do, or do you actually test them on the mat? If the latter, then why shouldn´t Rickson be held to the same standard as your own students?

As a fellow Black Belt along side Prof. Young and as a guy who has taken many classes and privates with Rickson, I get frustrated with videos like this one. There is no possible way to tell. It's only theory and imagination. It's an "unknowable" fact.
Rickson is one out of 8 billion percent unique. But best ever? or never be matched is not able to be known.
There are so many parameters or qualifications that need to be stipulated to judge such a question. Pound for pound?, Open weight class?, time limit? which rule set?
I have rolled and trained with many greats. Rickson is still MY number 1. There is only 1 rickson and not 1 person has fully duplicated his knowledge or skill.
    Regardless, love the videos Ryan

g.o.a.t... greatest of all time... is a silly title that is impossible for anybody to be assigned.
g.o.A.t... greatest of A time... this is a more interesting discussion when framed in the context of a specific sport in a specific era.
Rule sets, technique mastery, athleticism, physical size, injuries, environment/surroundings, competitors, etc... all of these have an impact on who is more or less likely to win. Rickson is absolutely one of the greats. Easy to argue the greatest of his time. Easy to still argue he is one of the greatest jiu jitsu practitioners out there today and obviously is in rarified air with regard to his mastery of technique.
I assume that by calling him the greatest of all time you are saying that Rickson would beat anyone not just the majority of the time, but that he would rarely lose to anyone. In his time this was obviously true. He was a natural athlete, and I agree that he could have competed in almost any sport at a professional level.
However, he competed in an era when jiu-jitsu, lute livre, and CACC wrestling were revolutionizing the world’s understanding of combat. He had a technical edge on almost everyone, and when combined with his athleticism he was nearly unstoppable. But it seems a bit of blind faith to say that Rickson would still destroy the athletes of today in grappling or mma competitions. The level of athlete today is literally decades more refined than the competitors of Rickson’s time. There is significantly less disparity in grappling knowledge and technique mastery of the top athletes and competitors.

It could take years but eventually someone breaks it. Everyone gets old. Everything is always evolving. The evolution of ground game is unmeasurable. It would be really hard for him to survive elite modern high level athletes and the new techniques. Great analogy in the video.

Love this guy's sports analogies! He even mentioned the Marshall Faulk flu game. He should have talked about Michael Jordan's "flu" game. Was it the flu? Did someone from the Utah Jazz send him bad pizza? Or did he stay up all night drinking and gambling? Who knows and who cares! Because when it was time to play, MJ was MJ. Series was tied 2-2. Game 5 was in Utah, so the Bulls had to win or face elimination. Utah had won 23 straight at home. But Superman could barely walk. He didn't even come out for the shootaround before the game, he ws sick! As the game got going, MJ was profusely sweating and constantly had his hands on his hips. Utah took advantage and stormed out to a 16 point lead early. MJ was sick, but he was still MJ and he started to catch fire in the 2nd quarter. He had 17 points in that 2nd quarter and pulled the Bulls to within 4 at the half. In Chicago, the air is thick and humid. But there in Utah, the air is very thin and dry and it showed. Bulls looked tired in the 3rd quarter and were sucking air. It's an eerie feeling when you can't catch your breath. And it's scary, especially when you're running constantly, up and down the court. MJ only had 2 points in the 3rd, so the Bulls really needed him to have a miraculous 4th quarter. Utah was up 86-85, with 25 seconds to go and MJ hits a 3 to put the Bulls up for good. Bulls end up winning 90-88 to go up 3 games to 2 and would win game 6 in Chicago to become World Champs again! His final stats read: 38pts, 7 rebounds, 5 assists, 3 steals and a blocked shot. After the game, MJ couldn't stand up and was so weak, he couldn't even drink water. He refused IV fluids, because he was terrified of needles...lol. So the trainers just kept forcing him to try and drink water and Gatorade and finally, after almost an hour, he was able to stand up. I believe the Rickson-Jordan analogy is a good one, except the 1,000x thing. NOBODY, in ANY sport, is 1,000x to their sport, what MJ was to hoops. Period!

And that’s only because Royce was the one to fight in UFC 1&2 which put it on the map in the US. But to say that he’s the greatest fighter ever you can’t. I’m only a blue belt in Jiu Jitsu but I’ve boxed since I was a kid and managing distance is huge in boxing you just aren’t familiar with the art enough to see what’s going on. If Tyson put two fingers on his jaw night night. Goes to the ground Obviously a different story. He never fought in the UFC so he never had the cream of the crop for mma. To answer your question, yes Rickson is still great. When you dedicate your whole life to something your gonna be great at it. Is he the greatest of all time? Probably not but we will never know. Was he the best fighter the Gracie family produced? Maybe, but again hard to say. Did he fight the best fighters of his era, No. did he win multiple world open weight championships? No. Did he take every challenge that came? No.
Rickson is great, no doubt about it but impossible to say he is the GOAT as many comments suggest.
There will always be an argument as to who is the GOAT but I feel most would say Roger Gracie, because his record speaks for itself. Plus, coming out of competitive retirement to choke out Buchecha is an unbelievable achievement. Rickson never did anything remotely close to that.
Many people talk about Sakarabu and his destruction of the Gracie’s. But Sakarabu had a great stand up game, something no Gracie has ever had. Put Saka in a BJJ match against the Gracie’s he beat in MMA and he would have lost. Royce was terrible at MMA and we know he only won the UFC because no one at that time had a ground game. Once the world started understanding it, Royce started losing. But Royce is still great at Jits and from what I understand has a better record than Rickson.

    • @KamaJiuJitsu

You had some valid points until your last comparison of Royce Vs Rickson. Royce’s record could be 1000-0 and Rickson 10-0. Rickson would destroy Royce 100-0.
      Destroy.
As far as Roger, his MMA-rules fight vs King Mo was heartbreaking for us old school GJJ guys.
Lastly, the “next” greatest at the time of Rickson’s prime was Rigan Machado. You can pull that match up somewhere. ALL (vs “many”) the Jiu-Jitsu guys of his time could “fight,” unlike today.

      Kron has almost his genes.
Kron grew up in a very similiar environment.
Kron had Rickson and other high level Gracies as teacher and started as a little kid.
So he had the best starting positon and a HUGE starting bonus against all the world class fighters which started training their late teens somewhere in the Amazon or in a Favela.
Even so he can't beat everyone, because the game and technique moved on and got better over time like everything else.
Rickson was the best and WAY ahead of his time but would be crushed by todays top 10 fighters. It's the same with Mohammed Ali, Ben Johnson or Diego Maradona.
There is no shame in that. It's just a sign that Fighting, BJJ, MMA and sport in general is evolving and improving which is awesome

    • @hman7787
      @hman7787 Před 4 lety +1

@@highsoflyify I disagree on similar environments. From what I understand, Kron grew up in CA and most of his training was in CA. With the popularity of BJJ and how spread out the Gracie's are, he didn't have constant daily access/training with his relatives, unlike Rickson did while growing up. I'm not saying Kron didn't ever train in Brazil or with family members, I'm saying he didn't have the access or the hours that Rickson did.
Yes, BJJ has evolved over the years. I believe Kron and Rickson have as well, especially Kron -- he trains with the Diaz brothers and crew. The fact that Kron isn't the #1 fighter in the world right now does not take away from his BJJ abilities nor does it from Rickson. Isn't Rickson 61 now? Was Rickson ever the #1 fighter in the world? I'll let others debate that. Could Rickson beat (insert name of any BJJ practitioner) today? With his age and damage to his body; probably not. If both were in their prime? I would put my money on Rickson. His understanding, application, way of thinking, mindset, among other qualities is what makes him special. Do others possess this? Sure, but not at the level, Rickson does.
Could Rickson beat (insert name of any MMA fighter) today? Of course not, he's 61. However, I believe Rickson would've adapted his MMA game if he was in his prime fighting today. There are many stories of Rickson tapping world-class BJJ black belts and even some MMA fighters in training. Yes, I know, some people will say "it's only training and not a real match/fight". However, you still have some of these same people who have gone on record expressing how great Rickson is and how they couldn't do anything to him. Off the top of my head Fabio Gurgel, Paulo Filo, Dave Camarillo, Nino Schembri, his brothers Royce and Royler, and etc. I have yet to hear anyone say that they dominated Rickson or that his BJJ is sub-par.

Question :What team/person is Kama Jiu-Jitsu affiliated with?
    Answer: Rickson Gracie.
So no wonder Ryan thinks Rickson is the greatest. And when Ryan is asked why, he just gives bs analogies, not any tangible reasons. The bottom line is that it is in Ryan's interest to declare Rickson the greatest, for obvious reasons. Royler and Roger would probably beat him in competition.

    • @KamaJiuJitsu
      @KamaJiuJitsu  Před 4 lety

We have NO “affiliation.” We just pay homage to GM Rickson for being the source of the Gracie Jiu-Jitsu philosophies/concepts we practice/teach/preach.

@@KamaJiuJitsu At the beginning of every video I see "Kama Jiu-Jitsu: Rickson Gracie Team". So we can split hairs, but clearly Kama Jiu-Jitsu has a connection to Rickson Gracie, if not an affiliation. The only objective way to measure skill is organized competition, Rickson is not even close to the best in that regard. All I am asking for are tangible reasons why he is the greatest ever.

      Lol, ok. Whatever, brother.
If we were a Royce/Relson/GU-affiliated school, I would STILL say GM Rickson is the best ever.

      No way.
Don’t get me wrong, Wallid was good (I even got to train with him once at Franco’s studio after he beat Royce).

      Um, no.

@@KamaJiuJitsu The guy defeated Ralph, ran over Renzo, put Royce to sleep and Rickson never wanted to fight him. You can not blame me for thinking Rickson wouldn't have had a walk in the park fighting Wallid. I think the Gracies were afraid of him at the end. The guy was destroying their most precious asset: their name, and they just couldn't afford to risk it all by getting their best guy defeated by Wallid.

    • @KamaJiuJitsu
      @KamaJiuJitsu  Před 4 lety +1

He “beat” Ralph and Renzo in tournaments by points. He was heavier than both (but not by a lot so it doesn’t matter all that much). He did put Royce to sleep with the Carlson version of the Clock Choke (which was impressive).
Don’t forget he also choked out Ryan Gracie in a street fight in Brazil, as well.
So, Wallid beat 4 of them.
Rickson was actually challenged by one of Carlson’s “best ever” in one Amaury Bitteti. IIRC, that fight didn’t happen because the day he challenged Rickson, he got KO’d by Mestre Hulk.
Now, I don’t know first hand, but from what I was told, Amaury was MUCH better than Wallid, good as he was.
At any rate, this convo was great fun, but Rickson had defeated others of a higher caliber.

Ryan, you are gonna have to adopt a different analogy, boss. Michael Jordan isn't kinda maybe the greatest baller of all time. He is definitively the greatest ever. There are no arguments for Russell, Johnson, Bird, Kobe, Shaq, or Kareem being greater than Jordan, even amongst most of these players themselves. Jordan is the greatest, PERIOD. Like with Rickson, the only people claiming anyone is greater than MJ are fringe opinions with recency bias syndrome. To be clear, Jordan isn't considered maybe the best basketball player ever- he is widely considered the greatest athlete ever to play a team sport period. His accolades and stats relative to his position are easily in a class of their own. GSP in mma would be a better analogy. There are better arguments for other goats in mma. Jordan is the Rickson of basketball🤷‍♂️
