🦁 Soft spoken Lennox Lewis at his best was the total package. When he fought seriously he was pretty much untouchable. The last undisputed Super Heavyweight champion emerged as cream of the crop against some of the biggest punchers in Heavyweight history.
Lewis avenged his only two defeats by knockout. He didn't make excuses for his only two losses, he said, "It's Heavyweights, you can get caught, but i won the rematches in style," and "Show me a Heavyweight Champion without a loss and i'll show you a fighter that fought a lot of nobodies."
Lewis haters always say, "but he got knocked out twice ha-ha." Well i say, "Mike Tyson got knocked out FIVE times ha-ha, and Ali lost his best 30 years of retirement from having his faculties traumatized for an entire decade. Watching his head used as catchers mitt 100,000 times was ha-ha. IT'S NOT HOW YOU START, IT'S HOW YOU FINISH."
57 year old Lennox is the GOAT. To hear him talk so clearly and eloquently after going up against 18 Heavyweight Champions is remarkable.
The 18 HW Champions Lewis faced: Vitali Klitschko, Evander Holyfield, Mike Tyson, Shannon Briggs, Frank Bruno, Tony Tucker, Hasim Rahman, Oliver McCall, Mike Weaver, Henry Akinwande, Tommy Morrison and Ray Mercer were later recognized as WBO champions, British HW champion Gary Mason, European HW champion Jean Chanet, Commonwealth HW champion Derek Williams, Canada HW champion Razor Ruddock, IBF/WBF HW champion Michael Grant, and WBC International HW champion David Tua...*[[ technically not all were 'World' champions but champions nonetheless ]]. Other notable mentions; Olympic HW Silver medalist Riddick Bowe, Olympic HW Gold medalist Tyrell Briggs, Andrew Golota, Zeljko Mavrovic, Frans Botha and Phil Jackson.
Name another Super Heavyweight with a better resume? Only person i can think of is Wladimir Klitschko.

Puncher of The Century Earnie Shavers is known for being the hardest puncher in Heavyweight boxing history. He scored 69 knockout wins, including 23 in the first round.
So powerful, both Joe Frazier and George Foreman told boxing writer Jerry Eisenberg they would never fight Shavers. Real fighters knew enough to avoid him. His incredible one punch power made him more than dangerous. George Foreman told him personally when Earnie lobbied for a fight, "hell no." Joe Frazier told Shavers bluntly when Shavers asked him for a shot, "No way, Earnie.”
Hall of Fame and all time greats Ali and Holmes both said Shavers power, especially his one punch power, was simply unrivaled. But they, and others, also said a lot more..
Angelo Dundee, the great trainer, said "Earnie wasn't really a good boxer, but God, his power was amazing."
Muhammad Ali said after his match with Shavers, "Earnie hit me so hard, he shook my kinfolk back in Africa"
And when fighters had to meet him, they left in awe. Tex Cobb said "Earnie could punch you in the neck with his right hand and break your ankle." He also said, "if a man hit any harder than Earnie I'd shoot him."
Ron Lyle: "Hey man, that's the hardest I've ever been hit in my life. And George Foreman could punch, but none of them could hit like Earnie Shavers did. When he hit you, the lights went out. I can laugh about it now, but at the time it wasn't funny."
Larry Holmes, comparing Shavers to Tyson, said "Earnie hit me harder than any other fighter, including Mike Tyson. He hit me and I was face down on the canvas hearing saxophonist Jimmy Tillis."
Jimmy Young, who was knocked cold by Shavers in his first fight, but survived the second, said "I was not gonna get tagged by him again, no sir!"
Nor were fighters and trainers the only ones who saw and marveled at Shavers sheer overwhelming power. Hall of Fame sports journalist Jerry Izenberg said of Shavers, "rarely did Earnie hit anyone below the neck; he was a headhunter and a good one. For me, Shavers was the greatest one-punch hitter I have ever seen."
"However, while Shavers struck serious fear into his opponents, such freakishly big hitting power had its drawbacks for the man himself," said Kenny Rainford.
“Being such a big puncher actually hurt my career,” says Shavers. “I relied on my power too much. I wish I’d had trainers that could have taught me more about combination punches."
“I used to gas out in five or six rounds because I put that much effort into my punches and it was impossible to punch for an entire fight without tiring out."
In the years that followed, Rainford met Ali and asked him about the famous fight with Shavers.
“I can not remember the last round of our fight,” Ali admitted. “He hit me so hard that for fourteenth round, I was on autopilot. I can’t remember a thing. When I’ve watched the fight back, and see the way I rallied in the fifteenth round, I was doing that off memory.”
Shavers reigned down on Ali with 266 punches that night. Afterwards, Rainford claims, the New York commission stated Ali would never fight in New York again after doctors discovered tears on his brain.
Eig's study, conducted by Arizona State speech scientists Visar Berisha and Julie Liss found that Ali's speech slowed by 16 percent after a 15-round bout with Ernie Shavers in 1977. Shavers, a brawler, landed 266 punches throughout the fight. If one fight had to be picked, Ernie Shavers inflicted the most damage.
Shavers is directly responsibly for the early retirements of Ron Asher, Frank Smith, Bunky Akins, Bill McMurray, Harold Carter, Eddie Parotte and Larry Sims, all of whom he knocked out and never fought again.

Tyson and Lewis weren't sparring partners, per se. They had a short sparring stint of a few days when Lewis and his trainer drove up to Catskills, NY to meet Tyson and find out what the fuss was all about with him. It was by no means a formal sparring partner that was hired by the trainer or someone from the same stable of fighters.

'88 is when Tyson became undisputed, lineal, unified World Champion. In late '86, he did win the WBC Title belt, but he wasn't undisputed because there were two other guys with the WBA and IBF Title belts, and another guy, Spinks, that had been stripped of his Title but was still viewed as lineal Champ and he was still undefeated.

The second round lennox seemed to adapt and rocked him right away staggering him and sending his head bouncing back and his body into the ropes. Then a minute later he did it again with a quick 2 hit combo. You gotta remember they got head gear on in a real fight hed be knocked out. Wrong!!!! There were four fantastic heavyweights in '92. They all agreed that there would be a tournament style way of getting the heavyweight belt. Bowe would fight Holyfield and Lewis would fight Razor Ruddock. The winners would fight each other for the heavyweight belt. Lennox pummeled Ruddock and Bowe defeated Holyfield. Bowe was a great fighter and was in phenomenal shape when he defeated Holyfield the first time (just look at the video of how ripped he was that fight). But he didn't have that work ethic for very long. He also bullied smaller fighters. When he went up against other giants, he struggled. He got destroyed by Golota.... TWICE. And lost to Lennox.
Lennox overlooked three of his opponents (McCall, Rahman and Klitschko), but when he was in a Showtime bout, he always stepped up and destroyed his opponent (Ruddock, Tyson, Golota, Holyfield, Bowe in the Olympics).

Because of the referees performance I don't believe think it allowed an accurate contest was allowed to develop and the result was not a true measure of the contest that should have happen, but was denied of both fighters. I believe Lewis deep down has a nagging suspicion that the ref helped him which would remove some satisfaction from the result, and Bowe rightly would feel predjucidec against. I think Bowe refused to fight lewis as a pro as a way of making this point. Ref saved Bowe from the humiliation of being knocked out. A shame they didn't face each other in the pros, but this was of course due to Bowe's camp refusing to fight Lewis and this video is a good indicator as to why.

    • @3411Chad
      @3411Chad Před 2 lety +1

@Google Wack Lewis handled Bowe in this one and Bowe shamelessly ran from him as a pro; he felt that power and he and his camp wanted nothing to do with it. I didn't say Bowe was getting humiliated, I said the stoppage prevented him the humiliation that was to come if the fight went on; he was going to get knocked out. He was hurt twice (especially the second time) quickly and early in the round and was just going to be battered down to the canvas. A very good stoppage to protect a clearly dazed fighter.

Having a bad round doesn't negate a possible win. Bowe had the first round, Lewis clearly had the second. I don't understand why that first standing 8 was given, much less a stoppage.
