What MacGyver, Knight Rider, and so many other action shows get is how to handle the lead getting older and the audience getting tired of the series engine.
What they should’ve done, especially in Knight Rider, is have Hasselhoff transition into Devon’s role. The same applies to MacGyver. Pete would retire, Mac would run the Phoenix Foundation, and some younger understudy would be introduced just before the credits rolled, showing the lead offering them a job.
Not the best ending, but I really do miss this show. Any new attempts at it since have just not been the same. What I loved about the show as a kid was that MacGyver used his brain to outwit and help people, while still being cool at the same time and some nerdy, out of shape dude. And I can’t remember him ever using a gun. Sounds silly, but those things had an influence on me back then, and it’s been how I’ve tried to live my own life as an adult. I’ve always wished I could tell Richard Dean Anderson that.
I think this series is affecting a lot of people in a positive way and that's a good thing. It is unique. I liked him a lot as when I was a kid too.
