    Thank you so much for actually doing a painting with the unboxed and swatched paints. One of my pet peeves is when an artist unboxes art supplies and has no demo with them! Nicely done and so helpful.

    It's awesome that Daniel Smith has a gouache line now, I bought some a couple of weeks ago from Wet Paint also and I've been enjoying them so far, I noticed they hadn't separated in the tubes which I like, I enjoy painting with Nicker Poster Colors in my sketchbook and the way the binder separates in the tubes can be a bit annoying sometimes. I think the best thing about the Daniel Smith line is their lightfastness, so I will feel comfortable using them for work that I would sell. Great video, Steve!

    Thanks! As a gouache beginner, I got some Schmincke Akademie Gouache, at an unbeatable 3.5€ for 60ml, yes 60ml! They have excellent lightfastness (4 and 5 out of 5 stars) and many are just one pigment. I figured, if I liked it, I would go further. I cannot justify 10/15€ for a tube of gouache. I still haven't finished the tubes after a couple of years and they are so good, that I don't see any reason to change or upgrade. If you can get hold of them, they are definitely worth getting them. The Schmincke Akademie has a 24 colour range, but more than enough for me to explore the medium. Thanks for your honest review, Steve! I always appreciate your point of view.

    Definitely a great & very helpful video. Presently I am using Winsor & Newton for everything (watercolors, gouache, colored pencils, watercolor pencils), my local art store is carrying more Daniel Smith & M Graham so it’s nice to see how your comparisons & opinions are. I appreciate your testing & knowledge since I’m just getting comfortable jumping from beginner to an intermediate level Artist 👩🏻‍🎨. Thanks so much for sharing this wonderful news with us! I contacted Daniel Smith about a month ago and asked them if they'll be adding more colors and this was their response: "Thank you for your email. Yes, we will be adding 22 more colors later this year." I'm really looking forward to seeing what they add - hopefully they'll be including some of their staples, like Sap Green. It's strange that they would have chosen to include a super bright green like Spring Green for the first run and not a more popular one like Sap. But I'm happy that, in the last couple of months, they've also added Yellow Ochre and one other that I can't remember.
    Also, for those looking for it, Blick now has Daniel Smith gouache.

    Love this video and I'm really excted for these!
    John from Daniel Smith said in a stream a while back that the reason why there's 22 colors to start is that paint tube racks carry 11 tubes per row and he wanted to fill two rows. The next set of colors to come out will also come in a batch of 22, supposedly! I may buy some primaries, but I may also wait for the next batch of colors to drop!

    Thanks for this good and honest review and also for reminding viewers that they don't HAVE to buy these just bc they're "new." I have a small collection of WN Designer gouache and a lesser amount of Holbein gouache. I also just received a set of Turner Acryl gouache that I purchased from Jerry's. I wanted to try it, for one reason, in some cases, bc I thought it would be helpful to have an under layer that wouldn't rewet. I haven't even swatched the set out yet, but I think I'm gonna like it and have heard very good things about it and looking forward to using it.👍🙏🏼

  • @dorian8578
    @dorian8578 Před rokem +1

    I love these paints. The colors are very pigment loaded. I do think, however, the white is not strong enough. I have to use more white with the Daniel Smith Titanium white. I feel like I didn't squeeze enough white on the palette. Completely opposite when I use M. Graham's white. I feel like I always squeeze too much white out with M. Graham and have leftover paint, which I try not to make a habit of. I definitely think that the Daniel Smith gouache colors are amazing and the paint will go a long way, but I think their white can use a little more pigment. Great video and painting! Thanks!!

  • @ethicsexistentialism4191

    I noticed they had come out with a gouache line but couldn't find them anywhere in Australia (yet). I still love my W&N gouache... old tubes are still good after 25 years and colours are unmatched in my opinion. Schmincke and Holbein both come in at second. Even though I'm in Australia I always buy from Jackson's. Best prices (for Aussies anyway). Thanks Steve, always a pleasure to watch your channel.🙏😉 Merry Christmas!

    Another wonderful video -- thank you! I'm new to gouache and had thought the top reason to use it is for its opacity (as compared to traditional watercolor), so I'm confused about why we would want to have any hues that are not fully opaque. Is that for the purpose of "special effects" in the paintings?

    • @mindofwatercolor
      @mindofwatercolor  Před rokem

      No special effects or purpose. They are watercolors like any other but with more opaque pigments. These compared to gouache ARE fairly transparent. It's just a characteristic that is particular to these pigments. Denise assembled them because she likes those characteristics and how they handle.

The HKS designer gouache is a line people use for illustration; it acts the same like gouache; but doesn't have the choppy structure of it. That is not for this one. Graham colors should I get to go with it to be able to mix lots of colors like you do? It absolutely amazes me to see you mix colors! I want to get all 10 of the M Graham colors that are in your kit, and I found most of them on Amazon, but I can't get them all in one splurge, just a few at a time. Also I saw the video of the Derwent Graphtint 12 Pan Palette on Amazon for only $25.00, so I'm going to get that because I love those gorgeous colors, and it looks fun without being overwhelming. You're very talented and knowledgeable, and you have a friendly, easy, congenital manner that makes learning about watercolor interesting, inspiring and fun. I've been binge watching your videos and it makes me yearn to be able to create beautiful paintings.

      if you don't mind me answering, if you already have a primary yellow, I recommend getting a permanent magenta and a cyan in order to mix all colors in any medium.

    I must ask this- if you are going to start using these, will you stick to this basic 12? Will you be adding on as you go? Or will you just stack them on a shelve?
    Curious mind gotta know.
    Thank you for todays video.

      I’ll stick with the 12 most likely. I don’t use a lot of gouache colors since they can so easily be mixed with transparent watercolor.

    Love your videos, Steve! Not sure what you mean by "add one gouache to your watercolors". How? Can you show an example?

    • @mindofwatercolor
      @mindofwatercolor  Před rokem

      Hmm, and I'm not sure which comment you mean. Gouache can be tried by just buying white and mixing with your watercolor colors. But you also don't want to mix gouache into your transparent watercolor palette. Bring transparent watercolor over to your gouache instead. Maybe those were the comments you meant.

    I hope they start selling them where I am (so far still only WC). I use Holbein because it's the least expensive really good gouache for me, but I love buff titanium so that's a tube of gouache I must obtain. Holbein paints are absolutely amazing but they have fewer colors than the other big manufacturers (both gouache and wc) so sometimes it's necessary to pick up a tube of W&N or what not - unless you count Holbein's irodori line but those are more akin to gansai water colors rather than normal gouache. For example, Holbein has some really nice red earth pigments in their WC line, but they don't have anything like Indian red or red ochre in their gouache line which is strange.

    Thank you, Steve! It's been awhile since I've used the gouache. Could you please tell what is the last brush you used to add details to your sketch - # 12 Golden Natural Blend... ?

    • @greenbuttskunked
      @greenbuttskunked Před rokem +1

      It is probably a Silver Brush "Golden Natural" Ultra Round. It's a synthetic/natural blend. Very long, fine point on the ultra round, finer than appears in this video. The standard rounds in the series are pretty chunky and don't hold much of a point, but I have come to appreciate them all.

      Ultramarine and Quinacridone Magenta. Makes a wonderful purple.

    I hope it's okay that I ask this, but do you have any experience with Lascaux gouache, and if so, what's your opinion of it? It's available in huge bottles here in the Netherlands and is supposed to be a professional level gouache, and I want to upgrade when my current student level gouache (royal talens) runs out. It's a more economical option for me. W&N and Daniel Smith are sooo expensive here that I can't justify it to my bank account😂

    Hey Steve, I'm very much a w/c beginner learning from your videos. I was just thinking, could you paint successfully with Gouache based on Gouache colours matching your M. Graham watercolour 10 colour palette choice or does Gouache work differently? Hope that makes sense :)
    Cheers Steve

    • @mindofwatercolor
      @mindofwatercolor  Před rokem +1

      You could absolutely. M. Graham's gouache range doesn't totally match their watercolors but you can mix watercolor with white gouache for the same.

      @@mindofwatercolor Thanks Steve, just to clarify, so if one was able to get the same/similar colours in Gouache (say from different companies) matching your limited 10 colour limited palette they would mix near enough the same as watercolour?

    I love gouache. I have Windsor Newton white gouache. Just bought Paul Rubins gouache and love them. I know Daniel Smith has a great reputation. But I wonder if you are paying for the brand name. But there watercolour is 5 star.

    • @mindofwatercolor
      @mindofwatercolor  Před rokem

      Still watercolor. The more correct and precise distinction is transparent watercolor vs gouache. But they are both watercolor.

  • @ArabelC

    Can we still use watercolor brushes for gouache? Would you recommend a specific paper: cold press vs hot press?

    • @mindofwatercolor
      @mindofwatercolor  Před rokem +1

      Yes, watercolor brushes work fine. I like cold press because it holds on to the gouache better but either one works fine. Gouache can also work on lower quality non cotton paper better than transparent watercolor.
