Sir, I just wanted to say a huge thank you. When I found your channel and started working with your tutorials, my skills in watercolor boomed in quality a lot past month. In addition, you inspired me to actually love and explore colors, understand their theory! If I had met myself several years ago, she wouldn't have believed me that I finally dropped this confused barrier made of fears of touching colors. Besides, she would have spilled her tea if I had told her that now I eager to draw landscapes rather than human bodies. I really appreciate you as a tutor and as a person, you brought something wonderful in my life and I hope, that everyone feels the same way here, on this cozy channel. Thank you so much for everything, Sir.
My pleasure!
You wrote exactly what I was thinking. I watched a few other watercolour painting channels before I found this channel and I feel free now to experiment with watercolour. I was told that watercolour was really hard to learn but that didn't stop me. I just messed about with it until I came here and now it's become a kind of therapy. I have a lot to learn still but that's the fun part. I seem to end up painting random tree paintings more often that not but what's not to love about trees.
A needed pep talk for this artist. TY. The sound of Angels made me smile! I do that, make the sound every time I open my paints, pencils, etc. Love it :)
Thanks for the reminder of what's really important about being creative. When you turned your sketchbook over and continued the painting "upside down" I was like...😯. Such a simple thing to do to change your headspace about a piece.
All of your work is magical but your spontaneous works are mystical. Thanks for sharing.
One of your most inspiring videos yet. Thanks so much. Very timely for me in the dead of winter. I will pick up my brush and use the talent God gave me discovering the beauty of watercolor.
I think you're the first artist who has ever articulated what has been motivating me for the whole time I've been doing art (since 2011). I wouldn't have used the term "discovery," but that's exactly it -- what gets me out of bed every morning. Thank you!
Steve,
You are so encouraging and supportive. I hope you realize just how much this means to a 'doubtful watercolorist'. Thank you for always saying something that inspires me to try again.
You are so welcome
With watercolor in particular curiosity and the ability to let go and DISCOVER things you’ve never seen or never thought of trying which is why DISCOVERY is such a great concept! I find it’s the most minuscule things that are put together is what gives you something new🥰🥇🙏🏻❤️🔥
Well said!
Thank you SO much for doing your videos. I have learned more from you than I ever expected. My watercolor journey is greatly enhanced thanks to you. Once doubtful, I’ve now got the confidence I needed.
That was very timely for me Steve; it shook me out of a demotivation period. My “I don’t know what to paint” thing. Discovery is the answer and not thinking whether I’ll mess it up or not. I don’t lack skills, but I probably lack imagination. Let’s hope the watercolour itself shows me what to create spontaneously. Thanks very much.
This is fascinating--it's like magic the way you bring your talent and experience to bear on a lot of abstract colours and turn them into a forest. I'll try this eventually, but I'm pretty sure my effort will look like I spilled a bowl of soup on the page. Stay healthy and productive--you're a force for good.
I'm so jelly of that Albrecht Durer pencil box. :O
Thank you, Steve. This lovely, mindful video brought me tears of Joy! OMGosh on your color palette! Discovery is a surprising teacher as serendipitous events are deja vu magic!! Delightful!
I paint with watercolour and watercolour pencils. Your demonstration has inspired me. Thankyou
These are so beautiful, Steve. Been binge-watching your spontaneous paintings and want to try one so bad but scared. I'm new to watercolour and tear myself to bits if something goes wrong. It's so counter-productive. One of these days I'll get the courage to try it. Thank you for opening me up to a totally new style. It's stunning!
I love discovery and experimentation! Thank you
Thankyou for allowing me to see how you use your palette "while" painting
Thank you so much for your interesting talk and guidance. I only returned to painting during lockdown, after a 40 year break (work and kids then grandkids) and decided to try watercolour pencils - I too love my Albrecht Durer pencils. It’s been a difficult journey and I confused myself by watching lots of CZcams videos, then I lost momentum and my paintings no longer had the spontaneity that the pencils gave me at the beginning, I was no longer excited about what I was doing. Your pep talk has made me think and I am determined to find my mojo again. Thank you 😊 By the way, I love your videos but have no intention of trying to imitate what you do, you are awesome and they are a wonderful example of what can be achieved after years of self discovery - I have a long way to go.
Thank you for your comments about the journey thru discovery.
It's interesting when you talk about realism and abstract painting. When I did my degree, I had a great tutor for life drawing and she explained to us how it was important to know the 'rules' so you can make a conscious chose to ignore them to get the effect you're after.
I love watching your paintings come to life. 😊
Yes, exactly!
I don’t get how it does. I learned figure drawing and all it did was give awareness that my art isn’t sophisticated enough and it’s not good and realistic enough for me to do anything with it and I stopped drawing a lot more and every time I want to draw figures, if it doesn’t look good, I hate the piece.
What’s it supposed to make you do? Like sure, all art is abstract, abstract art helps you see shapes-but what is the point?
I learned all this crap and my art is still ugly, I tried forcing myself to learn different styles that old masters and people I like off the internet and I lose interest and have to fight with myself.
What am I supposed to do? I love drawing but I don’t feel like if I don’t do the requirements then my art isn’t good enough and I’m my eyes, I like my art but it’s not good enough.
thank you for such inspiration, not only the painting but the words.
My pleasure 😊
I'm glad I took the time to listen to this video in particular. Your pep talk was inspiring, thank you.
mr. Mitchell, I could listen to you talking , sharing tips, giving advice, essentially guiding so many beginners. I learn so much from you. You live so far away, other side of the world (im from india) yet you feel more familiar than the people around me. Thank you Sir, for sharing your knowledge with us.🙏❤️
My pleasure!
This video settled my anxiety about my recent works. Being loose, color theory and stretching technique doesn't come naturally to me. But you helped me settle them
Beautiful painting as always. Good pep talk too!!
Watching your videos is always a discovery process for me - especially your spontaneous ones when I'm kept guessing until the last moment what you're going to do with that shape or this patch of white. What a fun tip about the two kinds of white pencil, I definitely want to try that.
Your explanation of watercolour has upped my painting game so much. Thank you again for sharing your talent and knowledge.
You are so right! Started watercolor watching Frank Clark “have some more fun” and I painted that “style” for years. I wanted so desperately to paint from within Myself, and then, I lost my mojo for 5-6 years. The new watercolorists styles like your beautiful work here, so inspired me, I had to start painting again. Amazingly, I get a lot of compliments, and requests for paintings now. Thank you thank you! Love your “talk” too! 😀
Hi Steve again... By the to all... Happy New Year from Madrid (Spain)!!!!
With regards to this video... I totally agree with you! I've spent most of my life successfully working in the business world and now, at last, I have been able to start my passion for Art (in many mediums)... Just for me... to explore my creativity after a professional career based on logic and business... And I am loving it!!! Thank you for your thoughts on this video... It is inspiring! I'll keep watching all of them!
Thanks so much for the pep talk. I really enjoyed & needed to hear this today. As always your spontaneous painting is gorgeous. Also need to add watercolor pencils to my supplies soon too. Thanks for sharing this with us and giving us inspiration.
I laughed out loud when you opened your pencil box! I can see why the angels sing! 😂 100% agree with you on realist v impressionist approaches, each can learn so much from the other. I’m just beginning to bring that into my practice and it’s helping so much. Keep up the awesome videos, you are appreciated more than you know! ❤️ 🎨
Your pep talk was spot on! Thank you!
So inspiring, so amazing, I can’t wait to try! Thank you so much.
This is a beautiful piece Steve.
I love that Green
What you said really is so important!!
Loved this video.....thankyou so much for not only giving a wonderful demonstration of techniques but also for your words and experience and thank goodness so much that you do voiceovers instead of the horrible 3 note repetitive piano drowsiness that some other artists put over what could be an instructive video.....when you include music its appropriate and uplifting and never makes me turn off audio. I love listening to your thoughts please dont stop! You help me so much! You are the best motivator....i do have trouble experimenting on the good paper but when i do its because your words helped!
This musing about discovery makes me mindful of reading Leonardo's notebooks, and the things he wrestled with while doing artwork. He lived at a time before MOST of what your contemporary art school teachers told you was invented. The "color wheel" had not been invented so he wrote about the primary colors being something like, blue for sky, yellow for fire, brown for earth, (I am paraphrasing, not sure what the actual quote was, but it was NOT red+green+blue OR red-yellow-blue that we go by now. Additive and subtractive color models had yet to be invented, or discovered.) He was exploring shadows and shading using a candle, a ball and a wooden box, and he says something like, I don't know if light starts at the candle and goes to your eye, or if it starts at your eye and goes to the candle, but I DO know that it travels in a straight line. Now we just take ALL that for granted. And Imagine the discoveries along the way when you grind your own pigment from ROCKS, and people have not yet decided the best kind of oil to mix with it.
One of my hobbies is wood turning with a wood lathe, and I came across an OLD instruction book on how to make things on a lathe. The first SEVERAL chapters are about SAND CASTING the LATHE PARTS using melted steel. There were NO COMPANIES back then that made and sold lathes. If you wanted a lathe, you had to MAKE IT YOURSELF. I imagine several revisions were inspired by broken noses, and missing fingers.
Where would anything be without the "discovery" mindset. Good examples!
Going to get that paint brush! You were my first watercolor teacher four years ago. I watched your videos daily and got good quality paint, brushes and paper from the start. I was trained in the old masters style of oil painting, so it was an incredible challenge for me to switch to watercolor. You have been my inspiration all these years and I am addicted to learning new things. Have you ever tried watercolor pencil on velum? I do portraits and mount them on colored backgrounds. Because of the skills I learned from you, I've gone on to win best of show with some of my art and now occasionally do commissions. Thank you for continuing to encourage us to experiment!
Yes, have done colored pencil on vellum. Not a bad surface. Hey, congrats on the show and thanks for the kind comments.
I was really wandering how it would ends …it’s fabulous ! Bright idea to start upside down at the beginning and I love the finishing with the coloured pencils. Since last year I to use them more and more along with watercolor. Magique, merci Steve 🙏
You’re welcome 😊
I luv the Chinese brush you are using….. just got one… and like you said…… great discovery!,,,
I love the spontaneity of this and wondered if you had any idea at all what you were going for, what it was going to turn out to be in the end. Love the colors you used.
None. I let the shapes and the contrast edges suggest to me what I should paint. I also don't try to see it finished in my mind. I do one thing then react to it then do another.
I always enjoy watching, listening and "learning" from you. I just began dabbling in watercolors and inks and love these mediums.
Most inspiring piece you've done
Your videos are so great - so helpful. Thank you!
Thanks Steve. 💜
Great, great vídeo! You gave me another reason for maiking art, Discovery! Thanks! 😉 huge hug! 🇵🇹
I enjoyed your pep talk very much. Lovely painting
I'm just starting to discover things with watercolor paints and it's exciting to see it happen. Thank you so much for everything you do.
You are so good at that!
Really beautiful Steve.
Thank you. So appreciated it. God Bless
YES! I agree! DISCOVERIES!!!! A way of LIFE!
Great conversation today! Will be contemplating all you’ve shared here today as well as giving it a try. This idea is exciting for me!
I love, love, love your comments about dismissiveness. Thank you. I'm a totally self taught artist other than following artists such as you and a few others I love on you tube. I don't know the techniques, the language, but I love the practice of making art.
Great video! Very inspiring and.....motivating!
Love everything in this video
Always a delight, looks like a rainy winter day in the Smokies to me. Thank you.
It really does!
Always such good advice. Thank you so much.
Love the talk! Love the painting! I'm inspired!
I have a couple of ideas for videos. (1) What is your process for analyzing why a painting didn't work out and/or how to redo it "correctly" and (2) What is your process for distilling a photo or Plein air (sp?) scene into its essential components. Maybe when you first started out. It's probably instinctive for you now.
So very cool and informative! Thanks!
Thank you for the motivation!
Love this!!
It always amazes me of what creation you can pull out of a seemingly mixed mass of color. Usually I can see it formulating but I wasn't sure about the start of this one and then "WOW", there it was. Enjoyed watching it come to life as always. Thanks for sharing your insight and creative techniques.
Soooooo beautiful. Thank you
I really like this “style”.
Another wonderful and inspiring post…🙏🎨🙏
Thanks Steve . I needed to see and hear this .
Beautiful! Thank you
Brilliant thanks
Love your passion for art and discovery!!! You're so relatable!
It is truly marvelous. It was a mystery from the beginning and I wasn't sure where it was going to end up so the entire process was intriguing to watch.
Brilliant. As always..
Steven Mitchell watercolour skies
Beautiful tutorial
Fab as usual. Thank you .
Amazing technique, cool colours! Fantastic results 😊
Your content is of such a great quality 🤩
Thank you so much 😁
New watercolorist and new subscriber here, thank you so much for this! Of all the art motivation videos I've watched this was by far the best and most concise.
Looking forward to watching more!
oohhh I want to try that!
Thank you!
Espectacular 🍀
Great video and advise, thank you!
I agree!
Well said❣️
Thank you, this is such an interesting way to create something wonderful!
Thank you so much for your sage advise! Perfect timing for many of us here. This piece is truly amazing and so exciting and inspiring to watch.
Thanks! Glad it was helpful!
Beautiful painting, I love the colours! And a great talk as well. Thank you!
Thank you for your pep talks and yes discovery leads to creativity. I am myself learning to use a Gelli plate to make monoprints of my paintings and talk about fun! Love your style too!
You are awesome!
I super appreciate your discussion about loose versus realism, etc. I agree they should augment each other - we can all learn from various techniques. I lean towards loose but have always realized the importance of not dismissing certain skills and other styles and techniques. Thanks for this great video.
Thank you for “getting off track”! Great advice. You could be a art coach!
Well said 👍
Thanks for the perspective and beautiful videos. Just got your watercolor set and am in the process of getting it in a palette...such beautiful colors!
Beautiful! You never forget what you learn via discovery learning.
So true!
Hi Steve, you have been one of my most essential teachers! I totally agree about discovery; I can’t do the same thing over and over again; I have to engage my brain and my curiosity! Also what was that bamboo brush you were using? It looks like a cool implement!
You are an inspiration. I am experimenting with watercolor, liquid acrylics on Nara paper and discovering how I can use the technique in abstract landscapes. You expressed exactly how I feel. 👌
This was such a great lesson, and this discovery concept applies so much to music production which I teach online also. I think I will start look at practice as exactly this as well
Watching your videos is very motivating! Started watercolor at the beginning of Covid, and your channel has been inspirational. Looking back on my first travel journals I realized that I neglected to use any shadows. By the second one I noticed very few people in my sketches. Watching you today I saw that doing swatches with the watercolor pencils next to a painting will help me to choose how to use them. Many many thanks.
