    my 08 klr650 has 30,000 miles. other than tires, brakes, oil and filter changes and one clutch cable my bike has been as reliable as a hammer! still running original chain and sprockets which show no signs of a change any time soon due to regular maintenance. I bought it used with 4500 miles and has been the best 4000 bucks I ever spent in my life, Just saying!

      Oh make no mistake, I know exactly what you are saying, I loved mine as well and to this day I miss it, so if you ever have the chance and you think you want to trade it in, DONT do it, Keep it and just buy the other bike. I only sold mine, because a really good friend of mine needed one and so I let him buy it, knowing he needed it. It later burned in a house fire and it no more.
      But I do miss that bike.
      Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment and keep us posted on your bike, I never get tired of hearing how well they keep doing.

      Heartland Dual Sport been watching your videos for some time now. I used to own a KLR but sold it out of stupidity. Now that I'm looking to buy another bike I've been considering getting a new KLR, or something that'll do better on the freeway. My other choices are the AT, or the V-strom 1000. Your video is actually the first KLR vs. AT comparison I've seen on youtube. Thanks for the video

      @Heartlanddualsport  Před 8 lety

      Thank you very much for watching and commenting. I truly appreciate you. If it helps at all, the wind is always blowing here, Today I did about 250 miles mostly highway and some interstate and averaged speeds around 60 and up to 80 miles per hours, the Africa Twin does a much better job on the highway, the weight, the horse power and the 6th gear really help it maintain highway speeds with no problem. I do not have access to the -Strom or I would get you a better answer on that bike. I will see if I can find a person I know who can tell me a good answer for you. I do have a buddy who has the Yamaha Tenere, in fact a couple of buddies and they both appear to be extremely happy with those bikes as well. I think all three are very similar.
      I have a friend who bought a Triumph XCX 800 today, he is suppose to have picked it up today, so I hope to have a video by fall, a good comparison of both it and the Africa Twin.
      Thanks again for watching and commenting and I hope you have a blessed week.

      I've been using a 16T front sprocket this season after 5yrs with the 15T. It's made a significant difference for HWY riding, feels like a 6th gear. I'd highly suggest it. I switch back to 15T if I am going back to a dedicated tough off road ride. I switch my tires to knobbies when off road anyways so adding 15 min to switch sprockets over isn't a big deal.

    • @billut400
      @billut400 Před 6 lety +5

      But the KLR probably would not pull it.
      I had a KLR but sold it for a 2014 vstrom 1000 which I’ve ridden quite a bit. In fact a couple of months ago rode it to my friends place in Oklahoma. 700 mile days? No problem. He is correct about the wind. Kicked my butt on the vstrom but unless you want to ride a lead sled (I’ll stop riding before that) winds are something to deal with.
      I rode my Friends African Twin while there (along with his 685 KLR ) and for me, I’ll take my Vstrom and a Klr650 or DR650SE for the win. The AT is just too heavy (as is the vstrom) for off road adventures in my book. And I’m 6 ft 6 and too close to 300 lbs.
      Great video!

    I bought a KLR650 New Edition (2014.5) and I love it. I was raised riding high-performance litre bikes since I was 12 - but the KLR has been a really fun change for me... Plus it feels more comfortable to me off road than the heavier GS and Tiger models I've used on long DS trips in the past... I think now I need to try the the Twin, tho ; ) Cool machine!

      Oh yeah, the KLR is a great bike, I really liked mine and had a lot of fun with it. I have DRZ still, I will use for single track and true offload stiff and I absolutely love the AT for the longer trips, Sorry for the delay, rode a hair over 400 miles today and just now getting back. The more I ride this bike the more I love it, Just over 2000 miles on her now and she really does a great job. Haven't had her on amy difficult dirt yet, but I will will soon.

    Thanks for the comparison video! I agree with everything you said. I put 300 miles on my KLR this last weekend thinking about the africa twin the majority of the time trying to decide if it would be worth twice the price of the KLR and I think it is !!!! If I do get an Africa twin in my garage it will probably be sharing it with the KLR. I enjoy riding motorcycles! No matter what kind of road, weather or bike manufacturer as long as it is reliable.Again, a big thanks, it was great, and I will be watching.

I will say this, if you end up with a A.T. in your garage, you will love it too. It is a great bike and the more I ride mine, the more I love it. A video well done, Sir. Subbed for the quality and relevance of your videos. I have an ‘06 KLR650 which I use as my daily ride and set up for paved backroad touring most of the time .... off-road only to connect the paved roads. Best thing about my KLR is that in 14k miles of touring and despite the usual problems and fixes on the road, it always got me home. ‘Never had to call AAA. I also have a ‘06 VTX1300C which will be sold or traded in this spring to be replaced with lighter-weight DS, mostly for off-road touring. It’ll be a long and hard decision but I am thinking of (maybe, maybe, maybe) replacing the KLR with the AT (as my road bike) hence my interest in this video. BTW, I noticed the OKC road signs. We are relocating to NW OKC this summer. It’ll be an honor to meet and ride with you one day. Best always! Raymond

      Oh wow, well, I can tell you if you do decide to get an AT, it is a great choice, I am very happy with that bike. I love it. I will also say, you ar right about the KLR, it is a great bike as well, and to be honest I think I was more willing to take the KLR in rougher areas, simply because, it was easy to fix and cheap to fix had I messed something up, so there is that. in a perfect world, I would ride the AT long distances to get to spots I could really have fun on the OLE DRZ. but that a is a pipe dream and obviously cant do both as well as I sold th DRZ this past summer anyhow.
      How cool is that, I am in south OKC, so when ever you get here, Hollar we an meet up.

    Nice Dale. Lots of info there for people. Sounds like both get the job done but but like a new truck, you can pay for a higher end model with more power and options. If they were the same price it would be no contest but the klr price point keeps it viable just like the price point of the twin beats out others in the class. Nicely done. I think we will see alot of AT's on the road soon. :)

    The difference in cost is the biggest factor for me. I love the KLR and immediately felt comfortable on it during my test ride. While I haven't ridden the Africa Twin, based on what I'm seeing on paper I don't know if it is really worth double the cost of the KLR. That being said, my perception may change once I get on one and actually try it out. Great comparison!!!

      Thank you for watching and commenting my friend. I agree, the KLR is a great bike and the budget friendliness of the bike makes is a gem in its own right. I do stand by the last statement, Both days, the day I brought my KLR home and the Day I brought The Africa Twin home, were both happy days. I do know just like everything, everyone is different and the Africa Twin is not a bike for everyone, But I do believe a guy looking for a dual sport would be happy with either one of these in the garage. Different strong points for both. Thanks again for watching and commenting my friend. I hope you have a blessed week. Fun times ahead my friend.

    Nice job, HDS! Well... if the KLR650 is in the model lineup for 2017, that will make 30 years. Which I'm sure it will be, it has had a very long run, and it should get updated. I've always liked the KLR650. The Africa Twin is going to be a very good model for Honda , hope they keep it in the lineup for a very long time, as well. Thanks for sharing. Be safe, my friend.

      @Heartlanddualsport  Před 7 lety +1

      I will say this, the KLR is a great bike and half the cost of the twin, It will do almost anything you throw at it and it Half the cost, hehehe.
      I can also say if you get the Africa Twin, you will love it. I love mine and I saved my DRZ for the more dirt bike trails I do occasionally. But depending on what you plan to do with it, the KLR will do almost everything the AT will. At I think will make a better long road bike and then still do dirt once you get there, the KLR can still go as far just may take a little longer, Both are light enough to pick up if you ride solo and drop it, but like everything in life pros and cons to both.
      Thank you so much for watching and commenting and If I can answer any specific question feel free to hit me up, I don't mind t all.

    give me the klr carburetor tor over sophisticated fuel injected anyday, its easy to fix and most mechs in any country can solve any problems, klr is lighter , i ride off road so any weight saving is good,no computer hi tech systems on klr , just plain jane easy to fix bike, less things in the chain line to go wrong.

      Oh you are very welcome my friend, and again, I tried to be as diplomatic as possible, it is hard to impair these two bikes, they are in two different categories. I was asked by some of my active subscribers to do a comparison since I have own both, the people asking were specific, so I tried to answer their questions, but bottom line, they are both great bikes with some of the same general purposes for each, to go off and ride and have fun, and as long a s a guy is doing that, it don't matter what he is on from the 250L, DRZ, KLR or CRF1000L, They are all fun bikes with pros and cons, and Like I said, I was happy the day I brought both home. Thank you for taking the time to watch and comment and I hope you have a blessed week.

      Is fixing a carb a common thing on a KLR? I've never had to fix a carb on my 29 year old XL600VH Transalp and it's been everywhere. [I know the Transalp wasn't popular in the USA so just if you don't know it, it's basically a slightly better in every way KLR made by Honda released
      in 1987]
      As for EFI, its about the least likely thing to break on a bike, there is a reason why every mission critical modern engine uses fuel injection and not a carb.
      There are plenty of things on any bike that you can't fix while out riding.
      If you blow a clutch up while our riding you aren't going to fix it because you simply wont have the parts on hand along with a full refil of oil.

      I am deathly afraid of a computer run off-road moto. Take your KLR carb apart once and you'll understand how it works and how it might go wrong. Do that with you EFI, with your laptop in a room with internet access, and even then good luck. Oh, and fall on a slight downhill slope and try and pick up that Africa Twin. I ride solo, way up in the mountains in NM. Gen one KLR for me forever!

      Your secret is safe with us my friend. I completely understand and for the money, you do have one of the best bike ever made, plenty of power to dow what you want and still be able to go anywhere and do almost anything anyone else can on their bikes. To me, the KLR is still one of the bets bikes ever. Do yourself a favor, if you do ever get to the point your going to get the AT, Keep your KLR if you can. no reason not to have two bikes and I promise you , you wont regret it. I still kick myself for selling my KLR. I sold it to my buddy who bought it for his son, I wasn't riding it much and it made sense, but from time to time, i just wish I had the ole KLR in the garage, just to run to the store and grab something quick or take it on an old back road. I really like both of the bikes. But as you mentioned in the question. Service is cheaper on the Honda and there is Honda dealers all over the world. The two other bikes don’t have strong networks out west. Triumph for sure and I believe BMW can’t say for sure on BMW make it hard to even change you oil. Ducati and some of the others make it impossible to work on your bike and Tiger is starting to do same. Etc. So that and I love to tinker on my bike and he dealer availability if ever needed was how I made my final choice on this bike. Thanks for taking the time and commenting. It is greatly appreciated. • @ZackaryTwiddles1
    @ZackaryTwiddles1 Před 6 lety +6

    Your review missed the point. The twin is not an adventure bike. It's a road bike that can do "some" off-road. The KLR rides multiple riders fine but it's designed for both on and off road aka not a passenger bike. 100lbs of additional bike is not something to gloss over when the KLR is already heavy for dirt. The cost of a bike plays heavily into the likelihood of damaging a bike. If you go off road your going to go down and may cause some serious damage, repair and replacement is a huge factor. Wheel size and other items mentioned in video as favorable to the Twin are only favorable on road, nothing about that great horsepower will do anything for you off road (single cylinder KLR could probably pull a car uphill) and frankly unless your doing 80+ not going to have significant impact on road. What your really saying is you prefer a road bike that can handle a flat fire road and your video kinda points to that. That's great and I am glad you found your bike but it's really not what the KLR is about.

    • @Heartlanddualsport
      @Heartlanddualsport  Před 6 lety +2

      Wow, you have made some great points, I actually loved both bikes for different reasons,. When I made this video, I did it because I had several people ask me to do the video based on my knowledge of both bikes, so I did the video then. Since I have had the AT much longer now, I would have different things to say about it. I will say just like i said in the original bike, I don't think it would matter which bike you have, you would more than likely love them, either one of them, because they are both great bikes. The passenger is a huge one for me because I try to spend as much time with my wife as I can,, but if you have riden much off road, you know as well as I do, that you are not going to be doing a lot of serious offloading with a passenger, or I can say, I wont be because it would not work for us. Thank you so much for taking the time to have such a wonderful replay. I truly appreciate seeing other peoples perspective and I hope you have a blessed week my friend.

    The more people that bag on Klr s the more I love mine. 40k miles later and its still my go to bike. I have no interest in a dull Africa Queen, over priced gs or pos ktm.

      I know what you mean my friend, it is a great bike. I loved mine and it was a blast to have, easy to work on, parts are cheap if and when you do need them and very proven and reliable bike. I wouldn't have sold my KLR, except for a friend of mine had a boy who was needing a bike to go on some rides with us and his dad. I sold it to him and it is still running like a champ. He has laid it over several time and again, still running like a champ.

    That Africa Twin is a cool bike but the thing that keeps me leaning toward the KLR is all the electronic BS on the Africa. ABS and traction control have no place on a motorcycle that is made for going offroad in my opinion. I'd say if you need such things then you probably lack the skills to be riding offroad. Again just my personal opinion. Cool bike though. If they ever make a super basic Africa Twin without all that BS I'll probably buy one

    • @Heartlanddualsport

      I agree, it is the world we live it, if they don't put it on the bike and a guy falls over and smashes his foot then they sue the makers, I agree, and your right the more junk the more the chances of them breaking down and leaving a guy stranded, the KLR is a good solid bike, i do wish it was fuel injected not that I had any issues with it running, MY DRZ on the other hand it would occasionally not start and was a pain, the KLR always fired right us and was ready to go, to be honest, the KLR was as funner bike to ride I loved the AT, but the KLR was a funner bike overall.

    So we are going to compare the Africa Twin to a KLR 650?
    I will take the Honda all the way. The Africa Twin is the finest machine I have ever ridden.
    What good can I say about the KLR 650. Not sure I can think of anything.
    There is no way to compare the two.
    While we are at it how about we compare a Ferrari F40 to Ford Model A.
    Now if I have to choose 1 bike to do an around the world tour and I only have 6000 dollars to buy the bike, what choice do I have, One and only one, the KLR 650.
    I wouldn’t trade my KLR 650 for anything when the price tag comes into play. The KLR 650 in my view after 30 years on the market is flat out the best bike ever made. I have owned over 25 bikes in the past 50 years and no other bike will ever do what my KLR 650 has done for what I paid for it.
    I love the Africa twin, it would be my first choice today, that is if someone else is paying for it.

    What is the point of comparing a motorcycle with twice the hp, twicw as good suspension, and twice the cost with the legendary archaic designed KLR ? Who knows but the KLR wins out anyway.

    • @Heartlanddualsport
      @Heartlanddualsport  Před 2 lety

      hahah, I like the way you think, and yes sir, the KLR wins, That is what I am riding,. When I originally made this video quite sometime back, I had a few request to compare them, so I did. Yes sir, I agree, The KLR won in the end. Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment and know it is appreciated, we are trying to make one of the best Moto Camping and adventure travels channels on youtube and feedback will help us in the end. Another way to think about it, The KLR was one of the first Mid Sized adventure motorcycles and it will always be the base lone for many to compare to. Because in the end it rocks.

    Honda Africa Twin is over priced

    • @Heartlanddualsport
      @Heartlanddualsport  Před 8 lety

      I will agree with what the Africa Twin cost, it should come with the 12 volt adapter that is pre wired from the factory, I believe it should some with the crash bars that Honda Makes, as well as some actual offload foot pegs, and it should have more protection.
      Considering the Triumph XCX comes with said items above for the same price, there is no reason why Honda should not be coming from the factory with these items and then I would think it is more in line with the competition. With that said, Honda has a 998 cc engine, and we all know the majority of the cost of the bike is the engine cost.
      I do agree, it should either come with said items form the factory and or be cheaper. I knew when I ordered mine, prior to delivery, I would not get to haggle on the pricing and that is a hickey I knew I would take. I will say this there are a few in the showroom at some dealers now and they are not pre sold, so a guy may be able to get a better buy come January when they are trying to clear the showroom for 2017 models, so I think we could see the price start to come down. Allegedly the DCT model will be a grand more next year, not sure they will do that since they are not selling as quickly as hoped. I do love mine and I am super happy with it, But I wont argue your comment above, they should adjust it accordingly.
