  • Hey everyone! Welcome back to the Channel!
Building off of last week's Friday practice, I am trying to increase my ball speed. Is 7 steps the answer?

Lol! Yes sir that is part of it as well.
Although on that subject, the shorter and older you are the harder it becomes. Just take a look at players like Norm Duke who really struggled with ball speed as he aged. Then look at players like Chris Barnes who still throws 20 mph.
Thank you for the kind words and you are very welcome!

Lol you and I came to the same conclusion. Lanes are super dry where I bowl and 15mph at the pins isn't cutting it. I throw about 18mph normally but lanes are dry af lately and slows down so much gettingto the pins. Watched many tips about arm swing and the skip step to squeeze out more mph but it's not enough. I decided to add an extra step. Felt awkward at first but eventually added an extra mph on average to the pins. Didn't think to make a 7th step but I'm 6'2" maybe 6 step is good. If I need to, if I'm bowling on a flat stone in the desert (which is the direction this alley is going apparently) I could try standing a little further back and try a 7th step. Thanks for the video!

I used to use a 7-step approach before one of my friends converted me to a 5 step

Yeah it's not something I kept with. It was just too awkward

Just stepped back 2 feet from my normal setup and got 2mph last night after league. After bowling like shit, and having sporatic back ends, I shot 225,231 with 14.7 - 15.5 mph speed at pins vs. 12.5-13.5 range I had during league. Makes a huge difference on the back end reaction and controlling the pocket. I got to remember this and always bowl with the speed unless I need to slow down.
I don't think the 7 step is good for you. Start two feet back, take same steps, that should work, with same timing etc. you should just automatically adjust to it. Worked for me.

That doesn't work so well when your 5'4". Adding two feet causes me to be 2 feet from the foul line upon release if I stay with 5 steps, which in turn causes me to lay the ball down super early. Which comes with its own challenges.

@@BigSkyBowler odd. I just got to tell myself to take faster strides in my heda, I end up getting back to about the same spot at the line when I do it. First two steps are same short ones, then I kind of really accellerate to the line. Works ok so far. Everyone will have their own way that's confortable for them, that's for sure! If it becomes problematic I might try 7 step, but so far so good!

      Glad it works for you!
The 7 step feels weird for sure. Not for everyone!

use 5 steps as many PBA players did.
