Such incredible story- to have to force Germany into doing the right thing ! Thank all the gods for the internet, for our ability to do this work wherever we are . I have been wondering myself if Scholtz is worried about Ukraine growing too powerful after this war to compete with his number one status in Europe. The next step is to give Ukraine access to Western fighter jets. Germany says no to fighter jets. Unlike with the tanks I hope that Germany doesn't have a say here. Hopefully there are no German components in Swedish, French and American fighter jets. The Swedish government has been stubborn about not allowing Gripens, which could be tied to not being in NATO. At least I hope so, because not being in NATO is the only semi-valid argument I can accept. If it was up to me, Sweden should have started training Ukrainian pilots on the Gripen as soon as we got the UK security guarantee last year, in May - June I think it was.
Ukraine's minister Kuleba asked for Gripens publicly last summer. So it's not that they haven't been requested. Thanks for the interview.

"The speed of shame". 😄 I have been in arguments with Germans about their weak response to Mordor's invasion of Ukraine. Germany appeasing and helping Mordor is directly threatening the security of Germany's fellow EU countries (such as mine). But the Germans don't seem to care about that. If Germany is weak, it increases the risk that Mordor will attack a second country. The reason is that Mordor then knows that Germany won't come and help that country. In my case the countries that would help us are further away than Germany, so it will take them longer to get to us. It is very disheartening knowing that Germany, who is a short hop away over the sea, will not come and help us if Mordor attacks us. We will have to wait for the British to make their way to the Baltic Sea.

Scholz makes a fool out of Germany and hopefully he and his SPD will be held accountable for that in the next elections. On top of that, while Germany gets all the beating, other countries like Austria or Swiss can comfortably hide behind their weird definition of neutrality or even take a pro-russian stance like Hungary with barely any mention. Even if Swiss refuses to provide Gepard ammo, it's Germany to get the blame for it ... Utterly frustrating. Hopefully this is not the way how things continue to work once this war is over.

Yes, it's also the part with the most percentage of right-wing (AfD) and left-wing (Die Linke) voters. As a former East German now living in the West, I feel a bit sad that many East Germans are susceptible to Russian propaganda lies and anti-democratic ideas. It may be connected to the fact that many East Germans grew up in families with parents that lost their jobs after the reunification and therefore don't appreciate democracy as much as people that experienced the reunification purely as positive.

    • @julilab
      @julilab Před rokem +1

Just in case you wonder why East Germans support RuZZia/Putin (don´t like to see Leopards deployed to UA): East Germany (former GDR) was part of the Soviet Union for ~ 45 y. During that period the GDR population was constantly bombarded with Soviet PROPAGANDA. The main propaganda NARRATIV was that communism is the greatest political system while the US is an evil imperialistic & capitalistc country; their only goal was/is to suppress and exploit other countries resp. their population.
East Germans perceived any hardship in daily life as caused by the US and not in the deficit economic communist system. Additionally, Soviet propaganda taught the population to constantly view themselves as victims of this foreign higher power (capitalism).
Viewing oneself as a victim is a highly comfortable position. This self-perception is passed on from one generation to the next. The GER right-wing party AfD consists in part of members who constantly see themselves as victims of a higher power and / or exploit this self-perception in their voters. This is one of the reason why they receive high approval ratings in East Germany in contrast to West GER..
So, all in all, many today East Germans see themselves exactly the same way as many Russians do: as victims of a higher power that Putin is fighting against.
On Twitter, you sometimes find longer comments from (younger) East Germans who are really pissed off by this victim attitude. As this general victim position is so comfortable it is hard to fight.
(By the way, the narrative of being a victim of a higher power is also strongly cultivated in China by the Communist Party. That unifies the population & directs aggressions against an outside enemy.)

    • @julilab

@@garyklimitchek45 As i wrote above, the Soviet propaganda spread the narrativ of the evil imperialistic US in East GER. The capitalistic west was the the scapegoat for all and everything. At the same time East GER was not that badly exploited & suppressed by the Soviets like some other countries. F. e. Estonia was forced to export a high percentage of their agro-products to St Petersburg (Leningrad). Additionally East GER historical identity was never that of a sovereign state like fe. Poland or Hungary etc. Unlike the neighboring countries of RUS East GER was never attacked by RUS. Poland was the bufferstate.
All in all East GER history & experiences with RUS is completely different compared to many East European countries. A couple of years after the Berlin Wall fell even an East GER nostalgia (we call it Ostalgie) set in. Plus as usual older people tend to glorify the past a bit and forget the bad times. All across East EU countries you´ll find citizens who sympathise with RUS/Putin. Usually they belong to the older generation.

I´m sorry to say but you are right, prior to the war most Germans did not know where to locate Ukraine on a map. Traditionally Germans travel south for vacation and ties to RUS were/are stronger than f.e. to the Baltics. Back in the 1960s, there took a romanticization of Russia place here in GER. Blockbusters like Dr. Zhivago hit the cinemas and Russia was almost admired for its culture and its commitment and sacrifices in WWII. Russian art also came into focus at that time. Later people started collecting icons and Russian artists. I am not a historian but I suppose that since Catherine the Great the connection between Germany and Russia was always a bit closer than for example between France and Russia. Additionally Germany was split in East and West 1961 and somehow people in the west who had strong ties to the Eastern part under Soviet occupation certainly tried to extract at least one or two positive points in the Soviet Union resp. its communism. There were many younger people in the West who defended Soviet communism, but few wanted to live there. It is certainly not German ignorance that Ukraine was not perceived as it deserved. It is rather the German history over 250 years that tied Germany more strongly to Russia. At least that is my assessment.

Well I certainly understand that when people want to lie to themselves, they succeed. Don't get me wrong, on February the 23rd my friends and I were walking on the beach in Odesa and talking about how Russia will not invade. I guess the sounds of explosions opens one's eyes. So now I'm reading all the books by Timothy Snyder in order to at least have solid arguments, when Germans say to me that Mutti Merkel was a saint and everything she did was holy

I would name you positivits instead of idealists and them negativists instead of realists, you count on striving for things to get better (progress) that values play a role, them only count on the dark side getting the better of all of us and nothing can or must change.
I must say your interviews are very interesting but they are too short a little more in depth would be amazing.

Thank you so much for introducing these excellent people like Ben or Jessica to us. It's reassuring to me that there are people like you in the background, advising & pushing Scholz to the necessary actions. Like Merkel , he does not want to take any unpopular stand. A lot of people are afraid of escalation .

Well you are talking about shame. Please do remember what Gorbatchow said to the east german Kanzler Honecker in 1989 "wer zu spät kommt" It is not shame here but moreover fear to end up in a situation where we all could blame Scholz for the one who "lost" the war for Ukraine. That role in history was not really that attractive to Scholz.

Well done on advocating for Germany to accept the reality of russian imperial aggression.
No sane person ever wants war but weapons sitting in storage while Ukrainians are literally fighting for their very existence is a crime that will be looked back on with great shame.
