As a former ammo salesman allow me to elaborate on Hornady hollow points.
Hornady has two load types, critical duty and critical defense. Critical duty has a polymer tip designed for law enforcement that is "barrier blind," meaning it can first pass through a hard barrier and then expand after hitting the target. Police have to shoot through cars sometimes and the critical duty serves that purpose.
Critical defense has a polymer type that is designed to be smashed down into the bullet and facilitate more consistent expansion. It is less barrier blind but in a home defense situation you are not likely to shoot through barriers as you want to verify you are not shooting a loved one. The critical defense is also made with low flash powder that produce a less blinding flash. This helps reduce how blind you might become from the flash in a low light setting for those bump in the night moments.
If its home defense, I would recommend critical defense. If this is a conceal carry gun either would work. I lean towards critical defense as even in conceal carry I am less likely to shoot through barriers. If their is a barrier between me and the threat I am using that barrier against them and buggin out.
How this helps to clarify the difference between the 2 round types by Hornady.
So the critical defense would be the best choice for shooting low-lifes in low-light? Sorry, I couldn't help myself.

Mental note; Critical defense for conceal carry and home defense to not kill wife/kids/pets/ neighbors....Critical Duty for WORL SHTF situations were I’m shooting assailants/insurgents through car doors and walls. 👌😁

And don't forget the dry firing practice. Lots of handling of the gun, reloading, the stand, grip, aiming, trigger pull...everything without the bang. I think a lot of new gun owners think they can't train to handle their gun when they are currently not going to the range. That creates drawer guns who aren't touched or unloaded in 20 years. Thanks for bringing up the hornady website, I'll check it out.

Welcome Steven, May I suggest two lessons: 1) Intro to handguns. 2) Basic Pistol Shooting. Know the 4 rules of gun safety insideout. Practice, Practice & Practice till you are comfortable & competent.

Thanks guys! I have been to a indoor range twice (I'm in Michigan, spring just arriving) first time was "new shooter" a one on one class then a second time more people were shooting, but I still could get input from the range "monitor" thanks for the welcome!

The one pistol fight I got into, (our army translator/impersonator caught me alone making a satellite call) the guy shot at me from 10-12 ft away. I never drew my pistol and my rifle was five feet away. He missed and I tackled him. He nearly beat me to death with his jammed up/broken/empty gun, (don’t know which) and I was rescued by my soldiers who tried to kick him to death. I flew to Germany for surgery and he walked to the Coyote tied up with zip ties, (I guess because that tough bugger was battered and bruised but that’s it). I still don’t know what or why but that’s my great shoot out story. ☹️

My Dad taught me to shoot in 1952 and so I have been shooting for a lot of years and have had the pleasure of owning many types of firearms in a variety of calibers. That allowed me to watch this video from the standpoint of an experienced shooter and all I can say is “WOW”. Jerry put so much useful information into this video that you would need to stop every minute and take notes if you want to remember it all. I love it when guys like Jerry, who really know what they are talking about, take the time to do such informative videos. In light of our current situation there are lots of people getting into gun ownership. They need people like Jerry to guide them. Well done!

When your in The republic of California 10 rounds is high capacity, Jerry”never heard some one say I have too much ammo in my gun”. Clint Smith”no one wants to be the first person to run out of ammo in a gun Fight”. Both Jerry and CLint like big guns! Lesson is carry full size gun and get good with changing magazines and and carry plenty!
thanks to freedom week there are a lot of full capacity (and greater) mags here. people i know bought all the mags they could.
I agree with Jerry and Clint about big guns. I have carried a full size gun for 25 years and it has never been a problem.
I learned a lot from, Jerry's video. One of the things I learned was, Ammo Choice needs attention. No matter what caliber you choose. It's the, Type of ammo, in that caliber, and for what purpose, that this particular firearm is going to be used for.

Thank you for reiterating that you want the biggest, heaviest handgun you can comfortably hold and aim. Another good point is that handguns in general are the hardest to shoot accurately and reliably under stress. Shorter barreled long guns, both shotguns and carbines are my recommendation for folks who don't visit the range much but still appreciate the potential need for a firearm for home defense.

I love watching / listening to this fella. He just makes so much sense. I would say that he is the premier expert on firearms use, safety , applicability. Just a wealth of information.
I've been a firearms instructor for many years and when approached by folks who just want a home defense weapon I always refer them to a short barrelled shotgun. There stopping power is much better than any handgun and are more forgiving if you're aim is off a little. Plus, the distinctive sound of a Remington 870 being racked in the dead of night is enough to make the most hardened of home intruders wet their pants and dive out the window before you even have to fire a shot.
I totally agree as all data I've ever accumulated has consistantly shown the psyche shock of realizing you're about to enter the "big leagues" of hardcore gunnery will usually end in your invading assailant soiling himself before he makes it out the door (especially if he has watched his buddy get HIS s**t blown away).
There are some real s**tforbrains stupid asses out there who actually believe that a home invader will be enticed to aggressively attack you if he hears the chik-chik sound of the slide racking a live shell into battery as you prepare to engage him/them in your domain. Pure horses**t. If they are accomplished in the skill of breaking/entering, they KNOW what is about to happen and they want NO business with it, I guarantee you.
I have a 12 gauge pump as the first line of defense and a .38 special on my nightstand as a backup
Love my Rock Island .38 and my Windicator .357/.38. Have functioned flawlessly for years.

Listen up kids, real hero's don't run around with a ball in their hands, sing or even star in a movies. Jerry is a real walking and talking hero and is an asset to everyone who is lucky enough to meet him in person or even see him on video. Whenever I see someone like Jerry I become a human sponge, and soke up every bit of info I can in and effort to be a little more like him/them. I have been lucky and have spent time with a lot of people like Jerry and I'm a better man for it.
I have NO doubt that Jerry would be able to handle Any self defense situation that would come his way. I have been watching Jerry for years and from what I have seen about his character and demeanor is that he would give that person every chance to re-think their life choices before taking their life. The tools and skills we have in our lives are only as good the judgment we use them with. Thank you Jerry ( and your family ) for passing on the knowledge and skill you have to others.

Thanks for being my idol for the last 20+ years. I have hunted and shot for the last 40 years the last 25 being extremly disabled. I hope to get back into shooting soon but being confined to a wheelchair it is a MONSTER challange to find a gun I can handle and afford. I am thinking S&W 686 3inch. I really appreciate your approach to firearms Jerry. You are undeniably one of the best shooters there ever was yet you refuse to allow yourself to become arrogant when it comes to your responsibility towards safety. Just the other day I was at the store where another shopper was looking at handguns next to me and I couldn't help but notice he was absolutely natural in his handling of several hand guns. Clearly he had done a fair amount of shooting and I have to admit he knew more about handguns than myself. Unfortunately he was completely unaware (or didn't care) that he flagged myself, the salesman and several unaware customers. I don't care how good someone is or how much they know when they can't comply with simple etiquette!

The only reason I would prefer a .45 over a 9mm is if/when a bullet doesn't expand as designed, due to heavy clothing, velocity, etc..If the bullet is a ball, I want a BIG ball. Still, I carry 9mm. Great video, Mr M!
I displease the crown you are 100% on the right track and that’s what folks really need to understand. The only reason our military stuck to .45ACP for so long is all they had was ball ammo. If I’m stuck with only ball I’m running a .45 for EDC or home protection. 9mm is a great round but it really only has proper stopping power in a HP round. I love 9mm, my wife EDC’s a 9mm my brother carries 9mm in his duty weapon but they both carry LEO Winchester 9mm ballistic hallows.

What I have learned in my 50 years of shooting handguns is to pick any caliber or size or model you like and train with it as much as possible and you'll be 1/4 as good as Jerry with it and that will be more than plenty for the average person.
Maybe slightly off topic, but he brought up which guns for home defense. No matter what you pick, you need a light to identify threats. I prefer weapon mounted lights so that excludes many revolvers for me, even though I own several and enjoy shooting them. I'm not going to hold a flashlight in one hand and a gun in the other if I can avoid it. You need all the advantages you can get if a gun fight comes to you. I had been carrying J frames in .38 and a Glock 43 for quite a while, until I realized that my style of dress supports pocket carry of a Glock 26 about as well as it works for the micro guns. I'm not a fan of IWB holsters, if I'm waistband carrying it's going to be a G17, OWB.
If I didn't have a young child at home, I'd go with a long gun for HD (AR-15 or high cap 12 gauge), but since my son is part of the equation, I use the same gun that I carry daily for home defense.
I keep a 27 round PMAG in the same place as my Glock 26 when I go to bed. If the bump in the night happens, I've got a lot of ammo on hand. My normal reload mag while I'm carrying is a G19 mag with a grip sleeve. If I'm feeling frisky, that large PMAG fits in my multi tool pouch about perfectly (Nite Ize Pock Its XL, an awesome way to carry extra tools and also magazines).
To me the Glock 26 (and 27/33 too) provide nearly full size handling with ease of concealment. I had debated getting a Sig P365, but the G26 won in the end, partially because I already owned it, and also because the sky is the limit for 9mm double stack capacity in a Glock.
I like my revolvers too, one of the highest quality guns I own is a S&W 586 with very little time on it. Beautiful revolver... but I'm not going to beat it up with daily carry.
IMO, price also factors in to "what am I going to have in service to save my life." I'm not advocating relying on junk guns, but in normal non pandemic times, a Glock 26 can be found for under $400 on the used market (as of 2019 anyways), where my 586 is probably double that. If you use it against another person, expect to lose it to the legal system.
Glocks practically grow on trees. I can replace a 26 and hardly care, there's no sentimentality there. Not the same for a classic S&W revolver, especially one built before they sold out to the Clintons..

30 yrs ago in one of my classes I took, the instructor said something that always stuck with me. I guess it made sense. Concerning self defense calibers, he said you should carry the largest caliber you can shoot well/accurate. Capacity is negligible IF you practice reloading often (of course). I have more than a few handguns, and the 1 revolver I currently carry (I switch often) is the Ruger Super Redhawk Alaskan .454. Hornady 250 or 300 gr. HP...I'm not too worried about expansion issues. Overkill? Eh, maybe..Kinda like using an RPG to swat a mosquito, but it is really a super well made gun. (put 14lb Wolf mainspring in...amazing)

Most beautiful opening backdrop ever. My mother works for the FBI and trust me cost was the main factor. I have personally tested the Hornady rounds and while they might just be the most accurate, and their rifle ammo is still in my opinion the best factory ammo out there. However the Critical(defense and duty) ammo I find expands the least. Wood Clothing Glass etc. I was very unimpressed. Speer Gold dot, Sig V Crown Any BarnesDPX bullets, and Federal HST. Those are my favorites. The Barnes solid copper seem to expand no matter the barrier save Glass.
One thing I will disagree with is the stress on capacity- especially the old saw "I've never heard anyone who's been in a firefight wish they had less ammo". Well, a LOT of people have wished that! Here's why: unless you're the most grizzled of combat veterans, the normal human tendency once shooting begins is to keep pulling the trigger until it's empty. Another bit of human nature is to run away from the person shooting at you. Combining the two means that every round after the first three is going into the other person's back, not his front- and now you're facing a murder charge. This happens no matter how well you're trained- look how many police shootings result in several rounds going into the perp's back- that's why riots start. And the real life situations in which you need more than 5-8 rounds are more rare than a lightning strike anyway, so unless you're an officer who has government immunity, high capacity is more likely to end you up in prison than it is to help you in an emergency.
I'm the guy who has guns all over the house. Everything from 38 revolvers, bolt action shotguns to semiauto pistols. My nightstand gun is a Taurus G3 with 18 rds of Hornaday critical duty ammo, my other half has my Colt trooper MK3 357 with 2 speedloaders of critical duty ammo. My edc is a Taurus G3c with the same ammo as my G3. That ammo with bust cinder blocks at 20 yds easily.

An excellent video. After years of shooting and carrying a gun I found got a whole new perspective on several points made in this video. Your videos are always full of information without any non-essential verbage. Good job as always.
In home defense I use my shotguns and of course my handguns! I always have 1 shotgun hot ready to shoot, and my EDC to who most of my adult life was my S&W model 16-4.
I'm mainly a shotgun person.
My home defense is my 12ga Iver Johnson Stryker with 10 round magazines. It could get messy here if someone breaks into my home. 😁
Jerry makes good points here. My home defense gun is a Model 10 snub loaded w/the old FBI round and backed up by several speed loaders. I had to use my issued .38 so I know how well this ammo works on the intended target.
The real question is does that ammo on the shelf ever get shot, or is just ever expanding?

My Favorite "save my bacon" pistol is my P226. DA-SA with Decocker. 9mmPara blasting handloads with 124 gr Berry's Hybrid-HP.
The best handgun for home defensive use is the AR15 rifle. No compensator, a flashlight and co-witness decent red dot that turns on when it’s moved.
Shotgun with a pad activated light and #4 buck.

I'm as old as Jerry and I remember the 38 well. I used to buy 1000 rounds of 38 wadcutter reloads for $40 from my friend who had a reloading factory. Fun times.

Great FACTUAL information from possibly one of the most experienced shooters ever.
I really like the idea of DA/SA pistols. With a Beretta, I can chamber a round while the safety is on (firing pin turned down), then turn off the safety, and it's ready to go in DA mode for that first shot. The heavy trigger pull acts as a safety to help prevent accidental discharge.

My home defense gun is a Smith & Wesson performance center 627 5-in barrel with Underwood 140 grain extreme penetrator 🤠
I absolutely agree with the 9mm craze these days. Ammo for the 9mm just keeps getting better and better in terms of terminal ballistics on target. It has matched or surpassed .40 and .45 for the most part. There are some good loadings for those as well (.45 185gr JHP, also +P) but for the most part they’re not worth the cost of capacity. That being said .45 does still have its place for states with magazine capacity restrictions. Gotta love NY. Also, despite all the modern polymer tips and JHP ammo, there’s something reassuring about the tried and true’s and one of those is good old .45 230gr ball. Another guntuber that I watch made a very solid point about standard ball ammo. His point was for a carry gun he likes ball ammo because it’s more barrier resistant. In a situation where you might have to shoot through something, (the example he gave was auto glass) ball ammo is going to be preferable as JHP will tend to dump energy into barriers. He was talking about 9mm but I believe the same principal applies to .45. Long winded but just some food for thought.

My go-to is a S&W 686 with a 6" barrel and lasergrips. I hope if I ever have to pull it out, I hope the guy on the business end will see the red dot coming out of the hand cannon and reconsider his choice of actions.
If not, well, the bullet goes where the dot is.

My home defense is 6 revolvers stashed my house over. 5 .357 Max Hollowpoint 125g. 1 44mag 300g HP. Revolvers will not JAM!
I carry a Cosaint 9MM HP with a Rugar LCR revolver as a backup.

Always good hearing from a new guy that knows gun stuff. lol 9mm is my choice however I still want a 45 acp to go with the 45 carbines we have. Matched with the Hornady Critical Duty 1,164 fps consistently. Sure rocks the log behind the target way more than the 9 mm. The safety? Well I use them on my conceal carry because I am very much short handed. Just hath to find a pistol with very positive position lock. I use the lock to holster then unlock after in place. Also like to lock the pistol when conceal carrying in vehicles. Vehicle accidents happen.

Every gun on the table is a "pistol", some of them are semi automatic and the others are revolvers. It is a small point but it makes a difference when it confuses people that don't know the difference but should. I saw a police officer in court actually testify that he didn't see the a person shoot a pistol and that what they saw was him shoot a revolver. I was dumbfounded that a cop would not know that ALL handguns are in fact pistols just as ALL of the attendants in the courtroom they were in are humans or people as we have many different words to describe the same thing quite often.
I use the argument about the term pistolero. That term came to be long before Glock.

@@wowguy3562 You are correct that every gun on his table is a handgun, but they are all pistols as well. Look it up. If you do you will see that the definition for pistol includes any gun that is designed to be fired by one hand and includes even single shot handguns such as Derringers and muzzleloaders. When someone that should know better talks like that it makes the rest of us look bad as far as I am concerned and I think it is best to educate everyone rather than allow the mistake to continue even if it is a minor point.

In a country where killing an intruder will most likely send you to jail no matter what circumstances, my first choice is a T4E pistol with steel/rubber bullets and pepper bullets in a "emergency mag". Non lethal, but painful enough. Combined with a combat knife, that will be enough in most cases (if ever there is one). *However* if things change and there is greater risk of armed intruders, I still have my S&W 686 and it usually takes me under a minute from bed until it's out of the safe and loaded (law prohibits to keep it anywhere but in a gun safe). I'm a sports/competition shooter and former military, so shooting while under pressure is not a new concept - in fact, it just adds an extra dimension and spice to the shooting :)

Jerry's given me the revolver bug. I've had my snub nose model 10 for years, and like it, but now I'm considering a model 617 for practice and a model 686 for general purpose. This could get expensive.

I heard in a study of actual shootings that the average shots required to "stop the threat" averaged between 1.5 and 2 for every handgun caliber except for 22. The one exception was there weren't enough shootings with 32 calibre to be statistically useful. I think 44 mag was the largest round included as the 50 cal handguns weren't in common use. Given that, to me one of the most important consideration is to make sure you use a gun/caliber that lets you can put the second and third round on target quickly accurately. For me a 357 mag would be a bad idea as the recoil is enough that it takes me a long time to get sights on target for the second shot.
Depends on the gun. I have a 357 that has about the same felt recoil as a 22lr
