This man here is the reason I started collecting and playing synths. I always think of him when I play. He is a major inspiration for me as a musician alongside John Foxx, Gary Numan, Thomas Dolby and Mark Mothersbaugh.
This man is a genius... thanks for all the years nick 🖤
Nick Rhodes is the reason I learned to play piano/synths
Carlos Garcia where are you from Carlos??
Same here 😁 (10 years ago)
I remember being a young keyboard player and the first DD album came out, i was wishing i could hear Nick talk tech.
Now thanks to the internet i can finally!
Nick Rhodes is a genius on the synthesizer. He comes up with the most inventive and melodic parts. The way he layers things is so tasteful, like Brian Eno.
Nick Rhodes is and will always be the CONTROLLER!!! Absolutely the best at what he does!
nick rhodes rocks. a very passionate musician. obviously he knows his stuff.
Love Nick Rhodes and Duran Duran very underrated talentd group they have healing and therapy in their music which is quite unique.
THANK YOU NICK RHODES YOU THE PROFESSIONAL SNYZER & KEYBOARD PLAYER
He is a music genius and a synth keyboards wizzard greatly underrated!
I wish Nick Rhodes could give a detailed interview for every song Duran Duran did. I need to know what synths were used, on what songs and the reasons they were used. I cant get enough....I need more synth Nick...I need more synth! Roland Jupiter 8 and Prophet 5 are my all time favourites. Owning/using them makes the whole process of music making fun, inspirational and worthwhile. I just have no enthusiasm for digital shit. I really dont.
I have a Prophet 10 rev4. Incredible. There really isn't anything else like it
Yeah, I agree. Early DD synths remain iconic
A genius!. Super interesting. I could hear this guys talking for hours. ;-) Have a good 2.022.
He constantly makes reference to the gorgeous Elka Synthex. It was made in Italy and is less known then the JP 8, SC 5 or Moog Voyager but it is one of the most amazing synths that almost no one has heard of.
Probably made most popular by Jean Michel Jarre with his "laser harp" sound! A Finnish company announced recently they may be re-producing the SYNTHEX.
@@xnonsuchx It's actually the Synthex's laser harp, because it's a factory preset.
I love listening to Nick talk about synths. It's just got such a dreamy feel to it when he does ♥
+Danny Edwards And queue Planet Earth!! Glad to hear that I'm not the only one who realised that his synths are dreamy!!
Just love Nicks voice so dreamy and awesome to hear how he gets those beautiful melodies and sounds off of the keyboard is so awesome keyboard player one of the best!
+Karen McKay he sounds like my dentist
This is so fascinating! His synthesizers have always been my favorite part of their music. He's brilliant, and I could listen to him and look at him for hours.❤
I love when he talks about music and his keyboards. He was my greatest influence in playing synth keyboards. Like he I still have my first synthesizer. I Ioved the Roland and Yamaha. It's all you heard in the 80's. I hope to thank Nick one glorious day.
This man is a genious, and absolute class
thank you nick Rhodes your my favorite keyboard prayer .I love Duran duran
I'm glad to hear that. Want to know a secret? I wore grey eyeshadow on my eyelids and brown eyeshadow on my brow bone once. I thought that I looked like Nick Rhodes if he became a woman.
Nick, dont stop doing the best music please!
roland jupiter 8 and the prophet 5 best analogue synths of all time
You haven't heard many others obviously.
@@mikehydropneumatic2583 Ive missed quite a few.
Thank You Nick Love You Nick Rhodes! Brilliant Man!
What I wouldn't give to have the chance to sit down with Nick and talk keyboards!!! Being a keyboard player myself, he's somebody I really look up to :)
Nick is quite expressive and intelligent when he talks about synths in this video. Grazi Duran Duran Italia! 👏🏻! Did you know that he's an only child just like me? He's a lean, mean 🎹 playing machine.
Aww! You’re cute! 💋
Glad to see he still has that Crumar Performer. I still have mine, as well. Can't seem to let it go.
Jupiter 8 = incredible analog 80s sound. Good luck finding one for under 5k!
ive been fortunate to have had two jp8s in my life, but stupid enough to let them go, too expensive now.
the best I could do was by a Jupiter 80. its the closest ill ever get to the Jp8...
Very interesting! I always love those weird and wonky synth sounds! And "All You Need Is Now" is indeed incredible. Whatever you're doing Nick, keep it up.
You know, Nick, it is because of the structure of an analog sound wave. A digital sound wave loses various overtones. Brilliant that you can hear that difference.
you cant?
It's for the same reason vinyl records are much fuller and richer in sound than a CD or an mp3.
Great, love him, since '84 I think! Being a bass player, he's like my era's Eno: very influential to all instruments, bass included (not in the least!)! And then there's John's bass....
That was very interesting, Nick. Love the way he speaks.
I want Nick to make some Shakespeare audio books!
He is talking very pleasant way
Genius 🎹🎛🖤
Thank you for sharing your art. Those analogs sinths are still the best.
I can easily relate to the idea that the equipment that Nick used at the height of Duran Duran's popularity is still rewarding and pleasing him today. There really is nothing like the synthesizer models he mentioned, even though builders like Tom Oberheim and Dave Smith have attempted to get beyond that period of their manufacturing days.
I could listen to this man's voice read the friggin' dictionary... but listening to him talk about something he's passionate about is soooooo hot!
Always loved Duran Duran and Nick Rhodes and still do. As a synth nerd, I just realized that when I close my eyes I hear Tim Shoebridge talking 😄...... is it just me or are their voices very similar?
Pleasant to listen to, this chap.
BRILLIANT! More please!
Still love a lot fo the digital textures of the Fairlight that Nick used heavily on Seven and the Ragged Tiger and Arcadia.
When he's being serious and technical like this, there's something very Alan Partridge about Nick. :D
outstanding review, Nick ! Roland is my favorites to..
I began learning from him and started playing keyboard . 😀
I like the whiny synth sound on Planet Earth. Slightly haunting but definitely atmospheric.
This man knows his synthesis. Listen to him.
hes so cool!
What a nice intelligent nice guy. The Elka Synthex he mentioned, blows moogs and other synths out of the water.
The Synthex is definitely one of the premiere portable analog keyboard synths of all time, with the many features it offers, including multitimbrality, a multimode filter, and pretty flexible modulation. And of course it sounds fantastic. That said, even among 1980s vintage synths, it wasn't without its challengers, such as the Oberheim Matrix 12. That thing is just nuts, and has more of nearly everything, like even more filter modes, lots more modulation options, more multitimbrality, etc. About the only thing it lacks is ring modulation (dang!), which the Synthex has.
Not that you're wrong at all. No synth was the be-all end-all, but the Synthex certainly was at or near the top in most respects. It's such a shame that it wasn't used more, but at least a lot of people heard it, thanks to Nick Rhodes and Duran Duran.
@@rbrtck Hi. Thank you. It was just my opinion. I just love powerful sounds on the synthex. Yes I agree sad, it wasn't used more by bands. Everyone seemed to go for Roland's, Korg, and Moog. Thanks for the info. No, I'm not changing my name to Elka Synthex by the way, but it has a nice ring to it, mmm.
RHODES!
I want him to read me a bed time story every night for the rest of my life. I just got ready for work and I can feel beta-waves rolling through my body after watching a couple of his interviews
I found a sound on my Yamaha CS1x that blew all my analogue synths back in time.
It worked at the time.
I really love my Behringer WASP clone, I actually bought a second one :-)
That mixing desk is huge.
Oh, ARP quadra, cosmetically one of the most beautiful synth. And yes, Duran D. was my favorite band around 1984-85 and I still love them. I really wonder what synth Nick used on A view to a kill - that aggressive orchestra sound. Suppose it was Fairlight but he played this song with Jupiter 8 on Live Aid.
He mentions later on that he HATED the dx-7.
I feel the same way. Analog and knobs cannot be replaced!!
Nick Rhodes,,,,,,is God
David Sylvian and his Band called Japan are Gods. Nick and Duran Duran just ripped off there Look and Sound from the Albums called Quite Life and Gentlemen Take Polaroids!! 😎 which both came before Duran Duran's first Album!! 😎
Haha... Kristeen is from my home town, St. Louis! Glad to see she's known outside of here!
Talks about first Roland System 100; shows stills of VCS3
adnauseam23 do you realize how big that system is?. Takes a lot of room to set it up
Close, but that's actually an EMS Synthi AKS. It's basically the same synth as the VCS 3, but in a different and easier to carry form factor, and it comes with a small custom keyboard on the other side of the case. There is no difference in capability or sound between the two.
@@miked3168 While the Roland System 100 is much bigger, it's still only about the size of a large keyboard. Maybe you're thinking of the System 700, which is towering in its full configuration. There is also the System 100M, which is far more compact and not much larger than the Synthi in terms of the area of the desk occupied when set up, that is, unless you have many modules, in which case it can get as large as you like (Vince Clarke has six cases/racks worth, which is huge for a 100M, although that system is still dwarfed by his System 700).
Yep!
BIG TIME!
Nick Rhodes is hot.
Nick I’m A kid and I still really like music especially your music you’re controlling of the synthesizer makes Duran Duran basically Duran Duran my favorite is Tiger Tiger!im8 and I still like your music! I’m in third grade this could be easy to do right?
Cheer up Nick.....
would like to see a demo of his keyboards for the album
Analog is definitely superior to digital, in richness of tone. It's not hard on the ears as like digital is.
Nick and KristeenYoung my two favs ;)
talks about roland system 100, shows pics of vcs3. whyyyyyyyyy?
+IZ19836 it's ems aks/synthi a
ask the camera man
Strange, that an image of an EMS Synthi AKS is shown while Mr. Rhodes talks about the Roland System 100.
love when he talks about Roland system 100, but it shows him using a synthi aks...
Have you used the Access Virus Ti2 excellent digit synth ?
I can relate to that! It would have made an easy O level! :)
Rhodes did not mention that little synth that appeared on most of Duran Duran's hit songs on each of their first three albums. In an (~1985) interview, he claimed that it was his good luck charm. Since he makes no mention of it here, he might have decided to sample the sounds he needed, and gotten rid of it. It would be pretty old by now.
Crumar Performer. I have one here :)
Nick could make talking about curtains sound interesting.. Just one of those engaging people.
I wonder if he ever uses VSTi synths.
No Fairlight CMI?
That was really a sampler as opposed to a synth. Considering the PITA it was to maintain, I wouldn’t be surprised if he unloaded it after Arcadia :D
Personally I think that Duran Duran is made up of musical geniuses, Nick is a talented, intelligent, elegant and attractive man.
You'd think Nick Rhodes would like to play a Rhodes.. :p
What is the keyboard at 4:15?
sounds like Nick has a "federal reserve" of analog synths in storage.
Still not as many as Vince Clarke or Martin L Gore.....
yes, Clarke must have a shop full of mint & another full of cannibalized 80s boards
not a surprise since they practically just use synths, unlike duran duran, they are a synth band
I was curious to know if the mini korg he brings currently is used for save a prayer, I saw it in one of his synth-racks but he never got around to playing it nor did he play S.A.P.
@@mattevans7884 Yeah, and Vince has them all hooked up at all times, ready to use immediately. While I'm sure that what Nick does works for him, when something is in storage, I think there is a tendency for it to be used less as a result. I don't mean to compare here or criticize, but I just think that an artist on Nick's level deserves to have all of his tools available, and could easily afford to do that favor for himself. But who am I to tell anyone in this business how to do things?
Analog vintage instruments and head valves amplifiers are way better sound wise than their digital counterparts!
Dull As ditch water, Jeeez !
LOL... I adore Nick but LOL I feel ya mate... :)
Listen to him at the very start of his career with DD and you wouldn't believe it is the same person. Nice to hear him like analogue synths over the new and very weak sounding digital shit on computers.
Lot more complex than my Casio! lol x
I was surprised that he mentioned "Yamaha" at all.
Funny he doesn't mention the DX7
He does mention Yamaha though…
@@hernancoronel But he kind of downplays it. That's a little odd, because I've always associated him with the DX7. Of course, he has used all kinds of instruments over the years, but he seems to be distancing himself from the DX7 here. Maybe it became a little too ubiquitous to be cool anymore. Thinking about it now, in his place, I might be doing the same thing. 😄
He's like a blonde Alan Wilder (ex-Depeche Mode keyboardist).
Nick Rhoades is a Pro!! 😎
Alan Wilder is a Genius!! 😎
Never heard of the system 100, looks like an EMS
That's definitely an EMS Synthi the video shows, not a Roland System 100, which looks completely different.
ok, i know satan does not buy souls because HE DOESNT EXIST but i truly wonder if Nick sold His Soul to STAY YOUNG!! look at him! he still looks like a young male model! how is it that some of us are blessed with SUCH talent and also blessed with good physical Genes.
Makeup and fresh blood.
As a player Nick is pants , love to see him playing light my fire haha oh lord! :)) in music limited technical ability "players" can succeed through the look they project and the luck of who their bandmates are , i'll never be as "successful" as Nick but i know i can outplay him , he made his name using pre-recorded segments not really a keyboard player it's all smoke and mirrors and bollox
@@Airlane-rq9yd I disagree. Show me Nick Rhodes just playing a scale, please. If he can do that, I will accept him as a musician, rather than a programmer
Digital has only just now in the last 5 years started to sound “ok”. It still doesn’t compete with analog though. Same thing with tape plugins vs a real tape machine, or digital mastering vs. analog mastering.
durian durian !!!
listen to them and EAT durian !!!
I bet he wished he joined Depeche Mode! 🕶🎶✌🏻
Lol 😎
No I don't think he does he's better suited in Duran Duran.
@@jacquelinemullan4900 Yeah, it's a matter of finding the right fit. Even Alan Wilder, as significant as his contributions were to Depeche Mode, eventually felt out of place, the way things were going. And Vince Clarke made that decision really quickly! 😄
I prefere All Korg products
A true “Synthophile” if that’s a word.
He's leaving out several key synths he has used probably because they are not considered cool. Namely, Fairlight CMI which was crucial to Ragged Tiger and Arcadia. Neither record could have been made without them. Alesis Andromeda and he never mentioned any Korgs. He currently uses Kurzweil a LOT. Nicks synth tech recently stated publicly that Nick hasn't programmed his own sounds in years.

If you pull up any Duran concert vid circa 1983-1984 from the Sing Blue Silver tour in support of Seven and the Ragged Tiger you can unmistakably see him playing one. I understand why he wants to distance himself from being associated with the Fairlight. It's not a big deal. I don't put him down because of it. It's just not currently considered cool anymore. That will change eventually and then he'll openly boast about having used it.
***** That's absolutely right! I agree with you! and you can see Nick playing the Fairlight Synthesizer during the Sing Blue Silver Tour in 1984 :-) and it is true, that Nick used the Roland Jupiter 8 in the song "Save A Prayer" , It was so, I think at least, or? :-)
Nickrhodes littledarling The Jupiter 8 is an extension of his body so ya, no shit
+NelsonClick Are you Joking the Fairlight CMI is still cool and he does talk bout it in other interviews bout it and they are all still good esp the CMI Series IIx + CMI Series III
I'm a lifelong fan of Nick Rhodes and I second what Nelson is saying. He purchased the Fairlight in 1982 and its all over every album since Seven & Ragged Tiger (he can be seen playing it in the album tour). He has said that he samples his synths and passes then through the Fairlight "as it adds a quality to the sound all of its own". It isn't true what he is saying in the video that he only every plays analogue keyboards. He has played a Roland D50, Fairlight, Kurzweil K2000, Ensoniq VFX, Korg Microkorg, Korg DW800 and Roland V synth. All digital synths. And I agree with Nelson - Nick Rhodes has a technician that programs all his sounds for him. Still Nick is my hero and inspiration for learning to play keyboards and programming synths.
Yeah! Should have been a teacher, eh?
damn dude, I hope you didn't pay for that joke
With JOHN TAYLOR in the band there is NO NEED for using synths for bass. To do so pisses me off. John's playing on the 1st 2 DD albums set a precedent that should NEVER be f*cked with. PERIOD.
Nick Rhodes keyboard playing complements John Taylor's Bass playing!! 😎
