    Saw this band,1971,in Lost Angeles,California.The club was the old Shelly's Manne-Hole,on Cahuenga in Hollywood.I stayed for all the sets,like I usually did.I picked up some hip drum shit from watching Tony that evening!Larry Young and Warren Smith added a lot to the group's music.What a fine musical ensemble that band was!Truly,truly wonderful and exceptionally exciting music played by outstanding musicians!

    Tony Williams, the musician's musician. It doesn't get much better than this, does it. When a musician does a live version better than in the studio, it shows. This would be the definitive version of "The Urchins of Shermese". Look at the amount of amps mounted on the stage. These guys were louder than Cream or Led Zeppelin. I was born in 1975 so I was -4 around the time this happened. How would I like to be around, in this time! It should have happened in Montreux.
    And all while that, sitting the drummer at the front, another first.
    You gotta love how he changed his hitting hand at 9:26.

  • @ohbopshbam
    @ohbopshbam Před 11 lety +11

    Tony Williams is the "father' of the so-called "fusion" area of music. It started while he was still with the Miles Davis Quintet circa 1967. Miles admitted Tony's influence on him musically. Consequently there would not have been "Bitches Brew", "On The Corner", or anything else that Miles did between 1969 & 1975 had in not been for Tony!!

    • @mutton7891
      @mutton7891 Před 4 lety +2

      That's partially true. Although Betty Davis also had a big part to play in introducing Miles to that rock/funk sound on his fusion albums.

    • @bhall8930
      @bhall8930 Před 3 lety +1

      @mutton is right about the Betty Davis thing but also Don Alias was responsible for a lot of these connections. Dave Liebman and Alias had sessions and Miles would listen over the phone. This is how Jim Riley was recommended for B Brew, Alias set that up because he had another gig and it was an untested thing.

    • @paulnebenzahl702
      @paulnebenzahl702 Před 3 lety +4

      @@bhall8930 Hendrix fascinated Miles. This all started with Jimi, Sly and James Brown. Then Miles worked his magic on everyone - early converters, like Tony - and late comers (but glad they showed up!) like Wayne and Herbie who needed more arranging and structure to realize their visions. The most interesting late comer to the funk swamp was Keith Jarrett, who Miles converted from a snobby purist into an electric animal. Without Tony, no Weather Report, no Return to Forever, so many others. Anyway, this is a great example of the children of Miles expressing themselves.

I got the Ego album when it came out, I was 16 or so, I admit I didn't "get it" when compared to Emergency, but I sure "get it" now, all these years later.
