Used to hunt central Nebraska in the early to late 60s. Thirteen hour trip to get there, rented a few rooms from a couple who lived in the very small town. Befriended a retired farmer/rancher who would drop us off in an area, then pick us up later in a different area, stashed game along the way when the coats got too full. Generally we hunted 2 weeks (my teachers hated me) and had the best hunting you could imagine. The retired gentleman of course got us on to anybodies property without asking as he was a well-respected person of that community. We usually hunted one day along the Loup River for ducks then headed to our ultimate destination. Can't remember the possession limit on ducks but for pheasants it was 48, quail 77, rabbits and squirrels was 96, so if 3 or 4 of us went we brought back a huge amount of game. We always hunted a couple days by our friends brother who was 90 at that time, his house was a late 1880's build, he owned 31 sections of land. He walked one day with us across a huge field, pheasant jumped up and he killed it with a single shot/hammer 12 gauge that was who knows how old but to see that old fella make that shot was a thrill. My dad always brought along boxes of gloves, shop rags, and big boxes of perfect individually wrapped apples for certain select people on that trip and they were all so nice and appreciative.
