the perfect marriage of punk and poetry..tragically beautiful record that captures the feeling of being alive in 1995..ill never forget seeing them at the west end cultural centre in winnipeg with propaghandi , j church, monsanto and i spy..the last day i believed in the stupid glorious dream of punk rock
I love this band and this lp. One day I went to my local punk record store shortly after this was released and saw that they were playing 400 miles away that day. I grabbed my friend and totally made it in time. They were so good. I wish everyday that I could experience that again!
dated this girl in SF years ago who would play this while we smoked bowls and hooked up...she also had a Jawbreaker tattoo like all the Bay Area punk girls did. this band is perfect.
Well, to me it seems they are far away from being perfect, but that is exactly why they are so great - punk ain't perfection - it's rough, crude, coarse and thus imperfect. And that's what I really like!
I listen to this every fall and reflect on life. Been a fan since 7th grade in the 90s and finally saw them in NYC a few weeks ago. Thank you for playing such a big part of my life
I went to San Francisco in the summer of 1993. I saw that Scream (from DC, that night with Dave Grohl) were playing at the Great American Music Hall. Being a Scream fan, I bought the ticket. The opening band, Jawbreaker, was unknown to me. After entering the venue, at the very moment I was entering the hall (there was like a dark curtain, like in old cinemas, if I remember well), the opening band started playing "The Boat Dreams from the Hill", of course never heard before. I still remember that moment so well, it was like an electroshock: I knew from that moment that the band was great. I saw Jawbreaker two more times during the rest of my vacation in SF and did not stop listening to them since then.
Do You Still Hate Me? This is such a solid album, not a wasted track or word; in fact, I love it so much that I have it tattooed on my forearm! I was introduced to them when I was sitting at a cafe in Benicia Ca and we were around an outdoor table, talking about bands and things and they asked me if I had ever heard of 24hour Revenge Therapy then I asked“what’s that?” We then went over to one of the friends apt and gave them a listen to and I was blown away by the lyrics and music and have been a big fan ever since. I was roommates with their live sound dude for awhile while living in Benicia.
Well, I like Jawbreaker quite as much as HD, but you must not compare Jawbreaker with HD for they came up about a decade later and were by far not as influencial and groundbraking as were HD. HD were just another - higher - level.
@@mibi3112 check out Hüsker Dü’s “Hardly Getting Over It” ( czcams.com/video/vGF7lEf4HBI/video.html ) and compare it with Jawbreaker’s “Ache” …you’ll see an uncanny similarity, though there are enough differences to set them apart. I love Jawbreaker. I love Hüsker Dü. Both speak to the melody that’s within my heart.
God, I haven't heard this album in years! I'd forgotten about them til now... man, "Ashtray Monument" was like one of my favourite songs for a while when I was 17.
+Brian Elia I grew up on this stuff. I probably saw Jawbreaker live at least 100 times between LA and SF. It is weird and cool to see kids still talking about them after 20 years. I have so much Jawbreaker vinyl just just shoved in a closet somewhere, all bought from shows. I have other 40 year old friends, and they STILL reference this band routinely. They are one of those timeless bands that won't ever die simply because the voice and the sentiments are completely timeless and sincere. It is strange to look at that album cover and realize that it's not even remotely dated, even relevant for 2016. Sincerity never goes out of style.
+Raymond Cogan Well, damn. Quite jealous to say the least. I never got to see them back in the day(94-97). I was in High School and didn't have a car. Bay Area shows were few and far between. I really can't add to anything you said. You summed it up perfectly. Really looking forward to the documentary on the band that's in the works. Hopefully it will come out in the next few years...
This is one of my favorite albums period. It's funny the alt tracks have the lead hitting the distortion pedal and getting quieter. I do that a bit myself.
I have times in my life where I still can't listen to certain songs (Ache being one of them) or even the entire album based on feelings from my teenage years (20-20+ years). Says a lot about the songwriting, lyrics, and general tone of the album to be able to hold up that well.
it's crazy imagine jaw breaker being in west Oakland in the early 90's this place wasn't easy for an old school emokid/post punks to inhabit. Its pretty much your either a thug, biker or hardcore punk. Fucking amazing band.
- Well, they didn't sell out and living there was cheap as f--k as far as the bay is concerned. Still don't understand why people feel that when a band signs with a big label it's selling out. I mean, they wanna eat right? Most of the people who say this garbage have jobs and don't worry about living in a van.
Yes they do, but I'd like to add J Church who always remind me of Jawbreaker in some ways. Also a modern day band that reminds me a bit of Jawbreaker would be Joyce Manor. Check them out if you haven't!
In Sadding Around, but I really there is so much Blake goodness. We need to make a new tag for Jawbreaker friends. I fight this Imaginary War everyday.
Yet Nirvana is the band that rejuvenated rock and roll and whose lead singer is iconic, while as great as Jawbreaker is, all they did was inspire a bunch of emo losers to make music. Don't get me wrong. A lot of the emo bands were pretty good, but let's be honest. The emo phase will go down as one of the worst phases in rock and roll history.
+danman6669 Nirvana rejuvenated my ass.. rock inspired by Nirvana went nowhere and died like in 2 years.. there was nothing there left. On other hand punk bands like jawbreaker were doing what they always done. And Jawbreaker is not "emo" you shitstain.
I like Green Day and Jawbreaker. Green Day had some really solid records man. I admit that American Idiot was the last one that really moved me, despite being more rock than punk/pop punk on most tracks, it's a solid record. Without Kerplunk and Dookie I doubt I would have started listening to punk, and thus would never hear Jawbreaker, NoFX, Bad Religion, Rancid, NUFAN, ect.
one last add, dude, condition oaklan,d, i know the words by heart but i dont care what youre saying, the whole package is so fucking dope, the band your voice the wjole thing is just awesome, gunshots and sirens bro, your voice is more of a guitar than a narrator oh shit and here comes the kerouac sample with the twinkling piano, fuck i love this dude
ok, last one for real. this band could totally exists and destroy even without vocals, how can u do that with just three instruments? click here to find out. luckily blake didnt lose his voice cos his words are perfect for the grace of this outfit

Without a doubt one of my favourite albums produced by Albini.
Best show I ever went to- Jawbreaker, Ween, Foo Fighters- UCI gym. probably 1995. What a sick album this is almost 30 years later.
