Owned both, and also a mk7.5 Golf R. The one thing nobody ever seems to comment on in these comparison videos is that they aren’t built for the same purpose.
S3 and Golf R are faster in the ‘real world’ in the UK, meaning they can cope with the weather, and are easier to chuck around tight back roads. They’re a car to be driven like a chav, and they’re unbeatable for doing so. If you want to spend around £20k to drive like an idiot, thrash around the estate and overtake people on a back road, get one of those.
The m140i is a motorway cruiser. The chassis isn’t capable of being thrown around like the golf, it’s basically a 116d with a big 3 litre engine dropped in. Handles like a boat and the open diff means you simply can’t keep up with a haldex S3/R coming out of bends.
If you drive the 140 like a chav, it’s get unstuck, has a really snappy rear and can’t put the power down when it’s wet.
If you understand that the 140 should be driven like a commuter car 90% of the time, you appreciate it far more. The gearbox is smoother than a dsg in 1st-3rd, the engine is smoother than the 2 litre and it feels far more premium due to the smoothness of the B58 and the available torque. The sound is far far better and it’s a much more expensive feeling car.
The m140, when driven like a 120d is great, almost perfect. Then when you want to overtake, it’s faster than 99% of cars on the road.
    It’s the perfect autobahn hatch.
It will never, ever be as quick coming off a roundabout, or at the lights as an S3/R.
The Audi’s got far better build quality inside, followed by the BMW then the Golf. But the horrible sounding EA888 and jerky DSG in traffic, means it’s no nicer to drive than a 1.4 litre TFSI.
If you’re bothered about ego and “gapping” someone, get an R or S3.
If you enjoy driving (not just driving fast, but cruising at sensible speeds) and appreciate the refinement of a 6 cylinder, get the 140i and just accept that the lack of traction and heavy front end means it’s not a “chuckable” hot hatch in the same way a civic type r would be.
Journalists bang on about the “fun of it being rwd”, but it’s not an M car. It’s not set up to power slide or drift or put in quick lap times. It’s a comfortable, refined, straight line monster.
Kids buy S3s and Rs and drive like an idiot until they get used to the initial traction and acceleration, then get bored. Or, they buy m140 and sell it because an S3 beat them at the lights.
I didn’t like the first m135i that I bought because I expected it to be a quicker version of my fiesta ST. Now I realise it’s more of a smaller, entry level, motorway cruiser like a 5 series, but with a monster of an engine, I appreciate the m135/m140 far more.
Completely different cars built for completely different things.

yeah, but what u dont know is the m140i can become a b road beast/ track beast with suspesion mods chuck about 3-4k on suspesion mods and you will have a behemoth of a hot hatch but good description

    • @idontcare807
      @idontcare807 Před 5 měsíci +4

@@Makten12yeah you’re right, stick an lsd, decent suspension set up, m4 control arms and some decent tyres and it’s a far better b road car, but we’re talking £4K before even declaring the mods on your insurance.
And even after that, spent a grand on a downpipe, tune and an intake and a S3 or R is still going to be faster, with £3k spare.
The ONLY thing the 140 has that makes it a fast b road car is the b58. No amount of power can make up for the traction advantage of haldex though

@@idontcare807 truth be told though both have their pros and cons to get a m140i to 450hp would cost way less then say trying to get the R/S3 to Stage 2 but yeah in the long run it might be a bit cheaper then m140i due to needing suspension mods if running serious power but all in all i wouldnt get rid of my m135i lci for a S3/Golf R 9 out of 10 times the amount of character and car you get for your money is just insane lol the sound the power the looks the interior (shadow edition 140i) is just superior apart maybe from a digi dash s3 cabin but yeah man you probably cant go wrong with either a s3 or a 140i but id put the 140i a pedestal above the s3 just due to the fact how easier it is to tune and how superior it sounds compared to the 4pot S3, good description again bro

    • @idontcare807
      @idontcare807 Před 5 měsíci

@@Makten12I actually think the digi dash isn’t that good. I had it in my golf and it’s a gimmick, looks ok but you can’t customise the data you’re given and whilst the map looks good, it’s far easier to just use the infotainment screen.
The LCI dash in the 140 is perfect imo.
I’m not fussed about tuning and running the highest bhp figures personally. It’s more about useable power and I think anything beyond 400 is pointless if you don’t have the suspension mods and lsd in the m lites.
The only problem with the b58 is that it’s best when pulling from around 40-120, so you’re in trouble too quickly with the cameras to be able to enjoy it.
I’m going to buy another 140i this year hopefully. Can’t wait to be out of the 2 litre dsg vw. Not very nice to drive

I've had manual M240i for nearly 3 years
It's been worked on quite a lot, fully adjustable bilstein coilovers
    Spacers
    Ebc brakes
    Eagle F1 asymmetric 6s
Custom Dyno stage 2+ tune with a sports cat and mst intake as well as a load of carbon cosmetic goodies
The car is now monstrously fast, with the uprated suspension and tyres I can't even get wheelspin in 1st gear in summer (in a straight line)
However I'm not sure how I feel about that, the reason the car is so fun is because it's got way too much power to put down, but by making it more capable I've made it a bit more Audi like

The m140i was built to fight the rs3 at its time of release unfortunately within a year both amg and rs dropped 400+ hp upgrades on their hot hatches which left the 140 slightly behind however the power difference is noticable compared to the s3/a35, remove the launch control and theres not much in the 0-60 which lets be honest in the uk you aint lining up and launching a car from the lights, and on the roll in the damp the 140 is slightly quicker than an R/cupra/s3, add in a dry day and it will walk them, having had an cupra for 3 years the 140 was an absolute upgrade and Ive driven s3s quite a bit and they feel lackluster when accelerating (maybe due to torque?)

Yes there both hatchbacks but drive so different, the rs3 is the all round better car and gives you so much confidence but then is very dull experience. Anyway love the channel and content, can’t wait for more videos next year 👍👍

Misconception. Good tyres and common sense and the car has been pretty good in the rain. It will behave like a hooligan if you want it to. Also the suspension is decent for road use within speed limits. Only when you're really pushing on then you don't have the confidence. I've only experienced the bouncy feeling when the road is uneven and you hit a bump or something at speed.

If you can't drive, PLEASE buy an RS3, S3, Golf R, etc, else you'll bin an M140. Simple as.
Think of the VAG range as offering stabilisers for those with low/no ability.

BMW didn't give it the suspension to deal with that b58 because no one would of bought the M2. Even on a wet day i drive my on the edge and yeah it moves around a little but the contraction control system is very good so it rubbish it's going to end up in a hedge

M140i have amazing B58 engines, and if it's an auto, amazing ZF8 box. But the car is just a 118i m sport underneath.
I had an M140i for 4 years, spent thousands on it.
No matter what you do, it will only improve it to a reasonable amount over a standard car, and it will never be a really good handling thing.
An S3 isn't exactly great either, numb, understeery, FWD haldex until the front wheel lose grip then the rears get brought into the game.
My OG M2 I have now, completely standard, absolutely runs rings around any M140i on a twisty road, no matter how much money the M140i has had spent on it diff, chassis mods, bracing, m3 arms, doesn't matter.

@@lukeskywalker1666 Did you even read my post ?
      I HAD AN M140i FOR 4 YEARS.
I spent thousands on it. My car did not have M3/M4 arms but all that does is allow you to run more camber so you get a better turn in, from the front wheels.
My car was running 455bhp/634nm, so I know how fast they are in a straight line, as I OWNED ONE FOR 4 YEARS you muppet.
Trying to tell me about a car I owned for 4 years, when you have never even owned one yourself you turnip.
Lowering kit does not do anything for handling on an M140i.
      Standard M140i is SLOWER than a standard OG M2, 0-60 times 4.6 for an auto M140i, verses 4.2 for a DCT M2.
My tuned M140i would have pulled away from my current OG M2, but not small dot in the mirror, the difference isn't that great.
Also your bullshit about S55 being a proper M engine is comical, you know nothing about cars that is obvious.
The N55 in the OG M2 is not the same as the N55 in other BMW models, it has forged parts (crank, rods, pistons, etc), and other improvements, and it is a great engine in it's own right. Plus the M2C is heavier and in reality the difference is almost nothing, with some very famous car reviewers preferring the OG M2 to the M2C.
You don't know SHIT about cars, so I suggest you keep your childish mouth shut.
