I was at KAF 2003-04. There were still minefields around the flight line. Shit pond, crappy internet, crappy pay phones, small PX, small bazaar on the weekends. We usually left the base on combat missions. For weeks at a time. Best thing we had was Robin Williams visited the base in December 2003. 10th MTN DIV. Climb To Glory! 🇺🇸

Retired AF (Security Forces) but deployed to Kandahar for 12 months as a civilian employee of the US Army Corps of Engineers. Also did 2 years in Kabul and 12 months at FOB Shank on the Pak-Afghan border. Yes, those rocket attacks are interesting. Also worked at Lash Gar Kah and Qalat. Enjoyed my four years in Afghanistan, learned a lot and would have returned for a 5th year but I had the opportunity to work with the VA as a contracting officer. Too good of an opportunity and career advancement to pass it up. Had the utmost respect for all ISAF members.

Albert Car if you want a combat job then it's you only have 4 jobs to pick from in the AF; PJ, CCT, TACP or SOWT. Security forces' primary mission isn't combat. Yes you may end up pulling a patrol outside of the wire but that's the exception and not the rule.
