I just watched the movie, and this is the 1st of the series and I can understand why it did not last people where expecting a drama based story and they turned it into a sitcom..

Bummer, I'd like to see the rest of this short-lived sitcom. Never thought my favorite hard-boiled actor from the 50s down to the 70s had a comedic side

I am not sure if it would've lasted whether it was a drama or comedy. As a comedy it doesn't reek of trashing values. I actually think if given a chance it could've gone somewhere.
