  • I somehow manage to avoid Eurovision fever until the day of the final. Except for a sneak peek at the Finnish entry, I watched all of the 2024 performances for the first time during the final broadcast. Here I talk about my impression of the competition and my favourite performances this year.
At the end of my discussion (at 16:16) I show the recap of all of the performances.
I just realised I never mentioned the winner. I won't spoil it now. I'm sure you already know if you are interested.

Some additional thoughts for topics you could use:
Often retried people like to relocate to warmer climates like Florida or to the Mediterranean countries.
However older people also have more trouble handling heat and those places are becoming even more hot. That means retired people will stay indoors throughout the summer?
Or do they migrate to mountains or to the north for the season?
Or are people so uses to stay indoors that it's irrelevant for many and they simply become more passive and immobile.

Anerican here. Had no idea about Eurovision until I started on CZcams. It's definitely entertaining. I'm cool with subtitles. The singers should be allowed to sing in their native language. Unless, they are performing an English language song. Then it makes sense if they sing in English. 😊 But, it would still be cool if they translated the song to their native language 😊.

@ingridthompson6512 don't quote me on this but I think all the songs have to be original so they could simply write or pick songs in their native language. I remember one year there was a song in Icelandic which was amazing. I think that same year was a song in Hungarian which I loved as well. However, if they hope to sell the songs outside of Eurovision, I guess English is the best bet.

Of course there are translations to many languages, likely to all significant ones in Europe.
You might have false understanding of native languages in this context.
The organiser is a union of European broadcasters.
They are organizations and as such don't have native language. Many of them are from countries, which have people with a huge numbers of native languages. Many countries have also more than one official languages or even versions of a national language.
This is the language rule in the competition:
Each Participating Broadcaster is free to decide the language in which its Contestant(s) will sing.

      ENTRIES REQUIREMENTS
      SELECTION OF THE SONGS

      SONGS REQUIREMENTS
      (i) RELEASE DATE
The songs (lyrics and music compositions) submitted to represent the country of each Participating Broadcaster’s country in the ESC must be original and must not have been released and/or publicly performed in part or in full before 1 September 2023 (the “Release Date”).
In case the song submitted has been made available to the public, for example, but not limited to, on online video platforms, social networks or (semi-) publicly accessible databanks and/or performed publicly, for example but not limited to during concerts, prior to the Release Date the Participating Broadcaster must inform the ESC Executive Supervisor, who shall have authority to evaluate whether the song remains eligible for participation in the Contest.
In particular, the ESC Executive Supervisor shall assess whether such disclosure prior to the Release Date is likely to give to the song an advantage in the Contest vis-à-vis the other participating songs.
The ESC Executive Supervisor shall have authority to authorise or deny participation of a song which may have been available to the public as described above. The ESC Executive Supervisor shall consult the Reference Group in case of doubt.

Direct translations don't always work so well in lyrics. But it's not rare to have several language versions of a song. These versions can be direct translations but also slightly different for musical reasons or because ideas need to be presented differently in different cultures which are tied to languages.
Sometimes performers even mix them in their performance, thought perhaps not always in the actual competition performance.

YLE has many programs leading to the competition and at different phases of the competition. And of course there are kind of narrators during the show. They aren't hosts in the same sence as hosts are defined by the competition rules. Usually they're only giving commentary about everything with theirs own stories etc.

You have already touched the housing market in your videos.
It could be continued with the more positive consequences. Those don't effect everyone equally but are likely to be positive on average
    Excerpt from today's news:
Hypo in a specialist mortgage and housing financing bank.
"Housing is now the cheapest in Finland since the beginning of the 2000s, estimates Hypo in its recent housing market review.
According to Hypo, the running costs of housing have turned to deflation and heating energy is significantly cheaper than a year ago. In addition, the real prices of apartments have fallen to the level of the beginning of the millennium, says Hypo.

I will give real estate a pass for now. I have a flat tour for the Perniö flat uploaded but I put it back a few weeks because this isn't a real estate channel. However, I will be back to the topic in a few months.

You could think about the languages, which have been the languages of diplomacy in Europe. That gives historic support for using French. English is a more widely used lingua franca, common language, nowadays.
I don't see reasons to connect this to colonialism. What makes you think so?
A more cooperating Europe is a younger different kind of history and story from colonialism. English might be a "colonial" language in UK and Ireland, where it has largerly replaced local languages. Other parts of Europe don't have that experience.

    • @laterlife2931
      @laterlife2931  Před 13 dny

@just42tube I only think of it as colonial because of the French requirement. It makes me think of the French and English being great rivals. I could imagine the French saying if they are going to speak English, they will have to speak French too. I am just reading things into it that probably aren't there. Similarly, if it was only French, I would not have thought anything of it. It's the bilingual nature of the requirement.
