@@autumn_equinox I'm lucky in that I wasn't as disturbed by it as I was by the Human Centipede, which may have been because of the slight humorous tone in this film. That and less (current) victims being tortured at once. Seeing the "walrus" in action also made it look more... cartoonish to me? More like a costume, while the picture in the thumbnail hit my brain harder. It's strange, the way our brains process horrors like this. I'm sorry you had a nightmare about it! I hope your brain "got it over with" now that the nightmare has passed and it won't dwell on it.
There really is something to be said about horror that revolves around what messed up humans can do to one another. Ghost stories scare me more, but shit like this sort of just festers in the subconscious, ready to leap up unexpectedly when something abstractly reminds you of it. I'm never going to look at walruses the same.

I was first made aware of this movie about a year after its release and have since only seen reviews like this, clips, and a plot synopsis during an unfortunate time when I googled it out of curiosity (and thus of course got the lovely google images lineup- "the picture hit my brain harder" YES!).
I literally haven't been able to look at/listen to actual walruses since. I can't stand to even watch oceanic/marine life documentaries featuring the real animal. I know it sounds like an extreme reaction, and it is, but I can't quite explain why I find myself not only psychologically but physically repulsed by the mere thought of them/this piece of detritus movie. It's... baffling. Especially considering I normally have a VERY high tolerance for most subgenres of horror, mainly because I could make bingo cards for how many tropes they usually dabble in, but This Damn Movie... It got me, like no other.
I dissociate if I'm exposed to too much of it (that wailing, the suit, etc) and nope on out of my body. It really is unprecedented. As for the nightmare, well... I'm shocked that happened at all. I can name three movies in total that have managed to dig their way into my subconscious so deeply that they invaded my dreams. It hasn't happened in years.

@@alisaurus4224 no idea!! That’s horrifying, isn’t it? However, when wearing the walrus suit, the villain had the same bulk as Wallace, and he was able to rip through it like paper (or flesh) without encountering any barriers, so I think the movie literally forgot to account for that. I’m going to assume though that it’s murder victim meat padding the costume, but I think that’s putting more thought into it than the movie did.
I think hypothetically with the right surgery, you could unanchor the arms the same way they were anchored, but honestly, it’s been like… years since I’ve seen this! So, I’ll take your word for it :)) but IRL disabled people exist and have good lives without full arm mobility (also without legs) so I guess Wallace’s biggest issue would be mental trauma, after a lot of OT and physical therapy.

I have a frustrating relationship with this film.
On one hand, it’s a bizarre body horror that’s genuinely disturbing and unforgettable. On the other hand, it feels like the movie just gave up after he became a walrus. It was an abrupt leap from losing his leg to being sewn into the suit. Then there wasn’t too much to do with him at that point until his awful friends find him.
The horror and comedy was so unbalanced that I got whiplash half the time. Smith didn’t help this by keeping scenes too long that didn’t progress anything. And I’m still not over that overly ridiculous ending that went for an emotion it didn’t earn.
I wanted to like this movie. Teenage me was so excited to see this film as I was learning that I really liked body horror stories.
But for every thing I like about it, there’s something else keeping me from loving it.

I think it could’ve been effective to show at least a couple of stages of the walrus transformation, with Justin waking up more and more mutilated each time. He would scream and swear and beg the surgeon not to do any more, promise him money, emptily threaten him with revenge etc. until finally he wakes up with tusks in his mouth and can no longer speak at all

Sooo, I'm usually really bad with horror movies: I hate jumpscares, I can't bear torture scenes (or even sounds) and most kinds of visible open wounds make me feel iffy at best - but this?
Would I sit down by myself and watch this? No. But I was genuinely surprised by how funny I thought this was and how freaked out a lot of people seemed to get in comparison.
The blatant comedy alleviates a lot of the tension and makes it a lot easier to remind myself that it's just costume and makeup, not real flesh.
Edit: the cast really did a phenomenal job, too, they really made this movie when it would have been just too easy to break it
