- How would you feel if every time you left the house, you only had 8 hours to live? Jim Lynskey's heart lasts less time than a single charge of his mobile phone. Diagnosed with viral meningitis when he was just two weeks old. It led to an enlargement and weakening of his heart. After several more complications and consecutive cardiac arrests, aged 19, his heart had could began to fail.
While Jim waits for a transplant, his only chance of survival is to have a Left Ventricle Assisted Device (LVAD), also known as a heart pump implanted. This device is powered by batteries which last just eight hours.

The UK law has changed. Now it is an opt-out register. Everyone is a donor unless they take the effort to opt-out. I find this a very good improvement.
Correct. If you die and you have good organs etc what’s the harm in the use to help someone else
That sounds easy enough, but in order to be a donor you must die in a hospital. Most people actually die before they get to hospital

@@rachaelray4693 no not true at all I know of people dying in car crashes that’s organs have been transplanted and saved loads of lives
@@laylapowell1233 they couldn’t have been pronounced dead on the scene of that car crash if they had their organs donated. They may have been transported to hospital and sadly died in the hospital. If you die on the side of a road your organs begin to die in seconds and also your past medical, social/family history is unknown. There are strict protocols to organ donation, look it up.

My apologies and condolences to Jim but can we stop calling it "fighting". And if they had just fought a bit harder they would have made it mentality? Nobody wants to die, believe me. But calling it fighting sends the wrong message. It is absolutely impossible for a person to overcome certain illnesses by willpower alone.

When my brother was waiting for his heart, I thought to do the same thing. My life for his. He did however got his heart in 1991 but we lost him in 2001. He was 28. One of the anti rejection meds caused Cancer

I agree mate, life is so cruel. All these bad bastrds walking the streets who seemingly live forever, yet a formidable young man, so pure and full of life, taken without being given the chance to really flourish and navigate his way through what is such a beautiful yet delicate life. It’s so true what they say, the most precious gift you’ll ever receive is life, yet as a race we’re so hung up on materials and objects that possess little significance when we ourselves meet our maker. One hopes that after viewing such a poignant story, that others will be deeply moved by this young man’s journey and quest to educate our communities about giving the gift of life to patients on a waiting list through organ donation.
I feel humbled and proud that Jim’s death wasn’t totally in vain, in that parliament passed new bills and laws, breeding hope and faith, to those waiting for that life saving organ.

RIP, that is just incredibly sad. He was getting an operation just to help him not be in as much pain and that's what eventually took him. That is just beyond sad, I honestly thought this would end with him getting a new heart. I hope there is something beyond this life and that he's living his dream now.
I have received a cornea from an organ donation. I had 20/200 vision and now I see in perfect 20/20. I have also been blessed to meet my donors family and all I can say in words is thank you and I also know that will never ever be good enough. I can not tell you how amazing my life is and the beauty I have seen from this amazing gift. Please think about this young man and my beloved donor Angelina Gilbertson and please consider donating. I have been able to see the world literally through someone else's eyes because of this

This is incredibly sad and my heart goes out to Jim and his mother. I hope he rests in peace knowing that he fought incredibly hard and changed the laws for the better. Well, this is definitely my que to add myself back onto the organ registry. I opted out initially because of family pressure but at the end of the day if I could save a beautiful life like Jim's then why not? He deserved so much more life than he got to experience R.I.P Jim
And they recently were able to transplant a pig's heart to a human. This will save many lives people who are way below the waiting list.

The amount of lives Jim has and will save through the law change is insane. His life was short but his impact was massive and I hope somehow he knows what a difference he made.
Oh wow. RIP Jim. I completely thought he was going to get his transplant. I love that the UK has implemented an “opt out”, instead of the “opt in”, like we have here in the USA. I am an organ donor for the sheer fact that when I pass, if my parts are still usable, someone else should be able to use them.

Incredibly sad. When I started watching this I thought my reasons was valid for not being a donor and not wanting my son or family to part ways with organs.
This has made me think twice. Seeing him struggle and his mum devastated at the end I wouldn’t wish that on anyone.
What are your family going to do with your organs other than bury or burn them?
You won't care about parting ways with your organs, you'll be dead. Literally of zero use to you.
Because you opt out if you or your family need an organ you become automatically ineligible for transplant

He *was* a true asset, not *would have been* 💔🥺 He did more to change the lives (and actually PROVIDE a life) for so many countless people into the future through his work and having fought through the pain to raise the awareness required to allow the law in the UK to now likely give millions of people that he could have never foreseen the “normal life” he imagined and so envisioned and longed after for himself. I wish that as a beautiful reward for being the representative angel on earth for a short time in honor of the list of other individuals waiting anxiously and hopefully for a the Heaven sent donor they so unbelievably need, that he has the neverending peace and comfort of that beautiful little “normal life” he wished he could have lived here instead of the amazing, inspirational and heart-wrendingly ultimately sacrificial short life but shining as the brightest light for himself and others that he so courageously and (ironically) wholeheartedly lived. 🙏🏼❤️

My uncle died at university 20 years ago whilst waiting for a heart transplant and the heart became available the evening of the day he passed away. My mother also suffers with cardiomyopathy so awareness like this and the work of the British heart foundation is so important

What a brave, intelligent, handsome, cheeky and funny guy who has been an inspiration. I am so sad he didn't get the life he wanted or deserved and for all the paint nd suffering he had. I so feel for him and his family and wish his family all the best. He did a great thing and has had a lasting impact. Everyone would always take organ donation if they needed it and those that then they oh they wouldn't donate will never make sense to me. Just do it. Save a life or multiple lives. Have the conversation and make your feelings known.

As a twin myself this is devastating, I’m glad the law has changed. Why anyone would opt out is beyond me.

@@averytokar9612 To think that God would require your whole body to be in tact to go to heaven, what a dumb idea to have in any religion, and if it's christianity, it doesn't even make sense, considering in the bible that circumcision is required as a promise to God, so its like.. God is literally saying right there in the bible that you have to remove a part of your body. Also, what, so amputees can't go to heaven? What about fingernails and hair? People that selflessly donate their kidney or organs cant go to heaven, despite doing this good deed?
@@averytokar9612 I know someone who is Jehovah's Witness, which I think is one of those religions that require that.. and her husband actually needs a kidney really badly and is on dialysis. I wonder if she is hoping someone would donate a kidney for him, but still believes that she and her husband shouldn't donate her organs.
My God, that poor family. All the way watching this film, I kept thinking that of course Jim will get a new heart in the end. It's shocking that, that poor guy suffered so long and such a lot.
What a tragedy. He was far too young to die... especially one would think, in this modern age and living in the West.

I am taken aback by his fearlessness throughout everything. While it is nothing compared to the immediacy he went through, I myself am on a kidney transplant list. Been close to 3 yrs now. Your life changes the moment you are told that you will need a transplant. Nothing can prepare you for that. More people need to see this story. Many people don't know the left ventricular assisting device even exists, let alone how it complicates the recipient's life.
My brother, who is 75 has been on one for 4 years. When he got it, he had no choice because they told him he didn't qualify for a transplant. He was also told the average life span on the LVAD was about 5 years. He can't withstand placement of a new LVAD, so his time is very limited. He is very susceptible to infection, so since Covid I have been unable to visit him. My state of Michigan has a very high incidence. I can't risk possibly exposing him. Everyone in my family has been double vaccinated, boostered, wear masks and do distancing. We communicate by phone and Zoom.
it's so sad that even with the vaccine people aren't fully protected .... I hope of a day when covid finaly end... I hope you'll be able to see yout brother in person soon !!
What an amazing young man!! Brave, strong and such a fighter!!! My son is 22 and decided at 18 he wanted to be an organ donor. Young people need to be educated on organ donation - so many people can be saved by just one person donating their organs. RIP - u did make a difference!!!!
this broke me. it literally takes less than 15 minutes to sign up to be an organ donor, please don’t put it off for ”later”. it’s also super important to talk to your family about what your (and their) wishes are regarding this.

It can be even simplier than that. In czech republic, everybody can be a donor, unless they they say before that they doesnt want to be. It makes huuuge diference.
Nah people should still be able to get life saving treatment even if they're not organ donors. Thats a human right that shouldn't be negotiable based off your own beliefs.
You don’t need to sign up anymore everyone in England is on the organ transplant list now unless you opt out came into force May 2020

In the states it is as simple as saying "yup make me a donor" when you renew your driver's license. I've been a donor since I was 17!
We had this before too but Its automatic opt in for everyone now

This made me break down… 4 years!!!! He dealt with that pain for 4 years… god and I’m crying and upset about my month long coma I was in January make me realize it could have beeen so much worse and I give him so much admiration for his strength that’s 8 hours a day switching a battery for 4 years… he was so young he didn’t even know intimacy the way I do at 26. One unlucky break after another. He had another rare complication of a procedure and ended up with blood in his lungs.

hey do you know what the surgery was for? i cant figure out what thy were saying, it was a surgery to lessen the pain and deaden the nerves but it caused his lungs to fill with blood?
@@pandapower5902 it might have been that they accidentally punctured into the lungs at some point during the surgery. Surgeries like this are always a risk because you're working around very delicate organs. They would have needed to be very close to his lungs to perform the surgery, as the pain came from the ribs. Earlier he said that the pump was rubbing on the ribs while pumping. So they basically went in and tried to numb the nerve endings in that area. Punctured lungs with no blood clotting is a horrible way to die though, as he most likely drowned in his own blood. I hope he can rest in peace now.
I was not expecting that ending at all. I have been sat in shock for a number of minutes to take it all in. I would love to be an organ donor however I am not sure there is much of me that would be any use to anyone. I was born with 3 holes in my heart and I have Arthritis so my liver and kidneys are subjected to countless steroids and medications etc. I am awake late tonight because I am in a lot of pain but this documentary really put everything in perspective. RIP Jim.👼🏻
Oh man. Haven't cried this much in a long time. Watching this makes me proud to live in a country with an opt-out system, and I also always made it clear to my family that if anything happens to me, my organs should be donated.

I am an Aussie who was just looking for something to watch online and CZcams recommended the documentary.As a result though I was determined to share it with everyone I knew and I asked that they share it too.Jim has already convinced a very head strong friend of mine to now become a donor.This friend was adamant he would never become a donor but he would never say why when I asked.This man is very set in his ways and very rarely shows emotions even in the worst times.I begged my friend who is also a father to watch the documentary and as I looked over he had a few tears roll down his cheek.He has children a similar age to Jim and he was really drawn to Jim’s personality.He looked at me and said he seemed like such a great guy, and he said how his parents are so blessed to call him their son.He then admitted he had never really talked about organ donation to his children and relatives due to losing his sister and little niece who were burned alive in a tragic truck accident.many years ago.He thought it would upset his family talking about anything related to death due to this past traumatic loss.Jim made him realise even if it is hard the talk needs to happen and he has now decided he will become an organ donor.I think as this friend said while Jim encouraged people to become organ donors he didn’t try to force them.He casually educated people and used his story to bring awareness in a personal way.People often resist when you try to force and pressure them into doing something.The fact Jim had the gift of being able to relate to people of all walks of life is also what made people take notice of him.I think his story should be shown to high school students so they are educated a few years before they are at the legal age of being able to become a donor.This way they will know the facts and are less likely to believe ignorant stories people may tell them.You hear people say such things like doctors won’t try as hard to save you if your a donor and others untruths which impressionable young people might believe.Keep shining your light Jim as you story is being heard far and wide.xx
Our Aussie system is still an opt-in system. This doco makes me want to campaign for a soft opt-out system.

People who choose to 'OPT OUT' of the organ donation scheme, for what ever reason, should also then not qualify for receiving someone's precious organs. Then the people who urgently need a new organ are more likely to receive one. Very, very brave and selfless son and brother RIP Jim, no more pain.
I'm crying. I'm so sorry for Jim and all of his family. I read the book "One minute later" and I found out that he was real and not just a character in a book and here I am watching his life and crying, sharing his pain as if I knew him in person. His teaching something big even if his not here anymore.

This was a really hard watch. It was so sad seeing Jim never be able to catch a break. Whenever things started looking up for him, another period of pain or an emergency would occur.
I am so thankful that he decided to use his voice to enact change to transplant laws. I'm only alive today because my mum received a kidney from her mum. If she had to go on a list there's a chance I would have never been born and my mum would have passed away at a similar age to Jim.
An opt out system is definitely the right way to go. It seems so stupid to let thousands of organs go to waste each year. I have had many discussions with my family over the years in which I made it clear that my wish was to donate my organs if anything happened.

There's a common saying within the transplant community. "Don't take your organs to heaven, because heaven knows we need them here."
And this is the perfect explanation for organ donation. We don't need them when weve passed. It doesn't make us incomplete. Infact saving up to 9 lives helps your legacy live on. No matter if you were the shy one at the back that noone noticed or the bold confident person at the front. You leave a legacy. I've lost friends waiting for an organ. And it's such a painful wait. We've even tried to save money to have a transplant in America, where they take on more advanced and complicated cases- but at a cost very, very few could ever afford.
For the work, dedication you put into raising awareness of organ donation, and for the strength of carrying on. Jim, you are a hero.

It is crazy how the body works. I am a twin and had complications during birth. Myself and my twin sister as well as my mother almost passed away. Thankfully we are now living good life's with no life threatening conditions. But it is just heart breaking watching this and I guarantee if my mother where to watch this she'd cry. Because she knows what it's like to be in the situation wondering if your child will survive or not. Rest in peace Jim and my condolences to his family.

Oh thats just so sad for that poor man and his family. I'm so glad we changed the donor register to an opt out system. Nobody should have to live in that kind of pain. Rest in peace Jim xxx
It makes you thank god for a healthy child. I couldn’t even begin to imagine the pain of this mother. As she says you would change places with your sick child in an instant
