- If you don't like the idea of climbing into a loft to go to bed, this may be the tiny house design for you. At only 24ft, it's amazing what this family have managed to fit into this home. One of the most unique features about this home is the bedrooms, with two available loft areas, this home also has a master bedroom which is located downstairs.
This tiny house on wheels has everything a young family needs, including full-sized kitchen appliances and even a washer /dryer unit. Best of all, owning the home debt free allows this trio to focus on the things that really matter in life!

The husband is such a quiet, reserved guy. He’s not used to this intense attention. He’s a doer and just doesn’t do the engagement with unfamiliar people. He’s and his wife have planned it really well.

As the owner of a two story house-this is the first tiny house video I’ve seen where I looked at the significantly smaller space and thought “I could actually live there.” First floor bedroom instead of those coffin sized lofts, stove with an oven, nearly full size fridge with laundry next to it, and a decent sized shower were the deciding factor. Well planned man, a great livable build. More tiny house builders should think like this man and his wife.

MacyLouWho: I know where you're coming from. We're in our late 60's/early 70's, and have health problems, so for us, needing to use a ladder to access the loft would be a non-starter. On the other hand, we could manage without an oven as long as we had a good toaster oven. On the other other hand, there's a tiny home (read about it today) that has what looks to be a full-size kitchen, but the farmhouse sink is only 24" and the stove w/four burners is only 20" wide and has a pretty small oven. The owners had created enough space for two narrow-but-separate closet areas and a large-ish bathroom complete with a small claw-foot tub, which the owner had always wanted. Their tiny house also had 15 windows. I don't think there's any chance we'll ever end up in a tiny house, although the house in which we raised a child and in which we still live has 1BR and 1BA and 784 sq. ft, which is pretty small by today's standards. It was built in 1950, when many houses were this size.
I think I like seeing all these genuinely tiny houses because I'm so impressed with all the ways people figure out how to get what they really want out of minimal space. I love enjoying their creativity. You might enjoy checking out micro-apartments in Seattle (google search will pop it right up for you) as well as another version of really tiny places in the "oldest US mall blends old/modern" spaces. Google for that one in the part I put in quotes. Do the same in-the-quotes search on this one for another totally different tiny apartment that appears to be three times as large as it really is. Do a search for "interior designer's ultra-clever compact city apartment." I don't know if I could live in it, but I have friends who would kill for it. Either way, it's really quite amazing.
MacyLouWho I’m not trying to be nasty at all but just being a adult and serious. I always wondered how with those tiny bedrooms how couples could have sex I just don’t think I could. And don’t laugh at me this is a really serious question I just don’t see it working very well I just really don’t yes you have other parts of the house but still a couple is going to have sex that’s a duh thing but I just couldn’t handle my bedroom being that small I couldn’t

Chuck When they said "We are debt free" I thought of Dave Ramsey (radio talk show host and author on becoming debt free). It's probably the best feeling in the world! I'm working on becoming debt free too! The home is absolutely beautiful and well designed. The hand made table on the wall was "la piece de resistance"!

What I am asking myself, why does it seem so many americans have debts? I would never buy something without having the money ...like...why would I do something so stupid? Maybe it's a USA thing...but I can't understand it
Catherine Duell in America, it’s basically like you’re not living if you don’t have debt. When I finish university this May I will have about 35,000 in debt. And then I have about 8,000 for my car, which I needed in order to get to my internship. I got it when I was 19 and thought I needed to get an expensive car, because that’s just what you do.
Once I pay everything off I’ll be looking into getting my masters. And then you’re supposed to get a house too.
It’s just kind of how everyone expects you to live. I have been thinking of going against the grain and following the tiny house movement. Minimizing my life.
It’s just hard because it’s so engraved in the American lifestyle
The owner should make some of those tables for the tiny house crowd and sell them. They would be a big hit :) Sure saves a lot of space as well as giving the eye a quirky picture to look at.

@@kingpokhara Well... the small details make the difference, I think. Tiny houses are very limited in options, but they greatly vary in small details, as do Bryce's questions. In my opinion he does a GREAT job, and his wife, the filmer, too!!!!!

I love that they put the kid's loft opposite their loft and not above them. It's a topic that never comes up when they talk about families in tiny homes, but adults have certain activities at night and I never understood how they would have privacy in an open loft with their kids straight across in the other loft. This setup seems perfect.
Yeah but they still need to be quiet and constantly worry about making too much noise unless the kid is deaf... I mean what kind of life is that. How boring. That's definitely a no for me as I love to completely let loose and be in the moment with my partner. Well each to their own.
They could also do those “activities” while their kid is outside the home.

Oh my gosh-the first time EVER I have seen a livable Master bedroom on the ground floor of a Tiny House! And Bryce you are spot on-it did not alter the comfort of the main room at all. This man could make a killing selling the floor plans for this layout to other interested Tiny House builders. And I will be the first one in line if he decides to sell them!
Just watched this video, my design is very similar with a Murphy bed as the downstairs master bedroom/ office/craft room by day; also I told myself I wanted a 3' x 3' shower, small sink, compost toilet; expanding the bath for a duplex washer/dryer; my kitchen doesn't have a full stove, I am going convection oven and a 3 plate burner for cooking which is under counter, my fridge will be an apt size, the same as I have now in my about 400 sq ft house. My living in a small house has helped me design my own Tiny House. I also like his videos, he wants to share peoples experience, the backstory that I feel others don't have. I love Tiny Houses, I am hoping to find a community or create one for other Tiny House enthusiasts.

Mostly you see young people in these videos and they don't seem to worry about getting old and having to climb all the way to their bed.

Bryce, one thing I keep seeing missing from some of your vids is how did they acquire the land? Did they buy, rent, or travel around to camp sites? It may be a silly question, but that seems to me to be one of the biggest hurdles for a project like this is having the space to build in and live. Love your stuff, thank you for doing what you do!
Most people simply find a bit of available land to rent. In the case of this family they are renting only a short drive out of downtown Asheville in an area which is a bit more rural and has lots of available land. Most people just ask around, find a place to park up, negotiate rent and then it's all good.

That's the reason why there is no tiny house movement in Germany. The land is more expensive than the houses... And you have only very few places where you can put a trailer on and live in it.

Multi purpose
I love how planned out this house is for their future. It's not a transition home, or a "until the kids grow up" home, but a forever home. So inspiring.
I'm getting closer and closer to owning one of these. Almost bought one recently but figured building some of it myself would be more fun. This channel alone is probably 95% of my motivation to actually making it happen instead of just dreaming about it.

This is the first time I've seen a tiny house with the bedroom downstairs. Being legally blind and having other medical issues which hinders me climbing stairs or ladders.

I find most tiny house builds do not take growing families into consideration. This builder maintained a simple design idea, with long term space management and made a family friendly home. If you're still in contact with them, you should recommend the installation of an air exchanging unit which is helpful in the Carolinas. Moisture and air quality issues appear to be the one thing most tiny home owners overlook. Thanks for the vid!

There is one!! If you look at 1:26 you can see the exterior fan, and then at 2:36 the air exchange is on the left wall close to the ceiling. This is handsdown one of my favorite tiny houses I've seen. Huge credit to them for not skipping the small details and doing things the right way.
Keegan Durovich, the unit you see is the mini split, which is for heating and cooling. Air exchange units are similar to vents.They tend to be on opposite ends of the home/ space and alternate between intake and exhaust to improve moisture content/ air quality.

Quinn Gaston-McDonald - Correct me if I'm wrong, but a tiny house shouldn't really be for a growing family. That would be irresponsible for a nuclear family to move into one of these. Saying a tiny house doesn't accomodate a large family is a total non issue, because that isnt what it's meant for.
No one says "That tennis ball would be better if it was bigger and you could play football with it too".

Yea, this is one of my favorite tiny houses and great for a family. If I were ever to make a tiny house, I always wanted my bedroom to be downstairs as well. Nice to see someone make such a great practical living space for those of us that can't stand the idea of climbing upstairs into a suffocating loft.

I love, _love_, LOVE this tiny house! It's just about perfect, from the inside out - almost exactly what I was looking for, as I have two boys who'd need their own spaces, plus a master bedroom. Love the exterior, the colour and the wood; love the interior layout, and the beautiful woods and artistry used. The tiniest of changes I would make would be a different door, a change of interior wall surface, and lighter coloured ceiling in the bedroom. But those are simply a matter of taste, and not a mark against the quality or design of this build - otherwise it's perfect! And so impressed that you were able to keep the budget so reasonable, even keeping in mind that doesn't include most of the labour!!!

I wish you would, and for that matter all tiny house channels on CZcams would, include these questions on every episode:
1. Most City, Town and Home Owner Association (HOA aka the Nazis) won't let you park or live in a tiny house. How did you ended up here on this piece of land?
2. If you rent this land, how's it going so far with the renter especially if they also live on this land.
3. If you're not 100 percent off grid, tell us about your electricity, water, sewer and wifi setup.
I would add, how far are them from urban facilities (schools, stores, Banks, etc) and how do they make a living.
what is that about oregon making water collection illegal? that seems shocking and astounding and vile!

I wouldn't ask about the landlord and Rental situation because if it is problematic their answer could make it worse. You have to be careful not to offend by being too intrusive.

One of the most heart-warming shows on youtube.. it's amazing to see so many projects, so many people that although struggling financially they still manage to put out such work of art using their skills and learn by doing. I got to say, even if they could afford a bigger house, the ones like this one, are unique and a life-time achievement. Best of luck!!

I think it is MUCH better to build an inexpensive small house instead of renting and paying someone else's mortgage. Don't be afraid to NOT conform to social stigmas. That is exactly what all of the most successful people have done... they didn't go with the flow.
Well said Robert. You're totally right on this one. Many of these homes are built for a similar amount of money as people spend in a couple of years in rent, so it makes a lot of financial sense.

Very true! And you're totally right. Designing in a small space means you have to really prioritize what's important and design for that. I love seeing how so many different designs all happen within the similar, limited dimensions.
This is the first one I've seen with washer/dryer, full stove, downstairs bedroom and extra bedrooms. Really awesome. I wish they talked about where the water came from, how they heat it, and electric source. I'd love to know how much land they are on, are they going to plant a garden? Looks pretty shady. I wonder what elevation or if they get snow in the winter? One end had a part that bulged out, I'm not sure what was in there. This carpenter is so cool, he's like "I'm a carpenter, this is what I do, I don't get what the big deal is, anyone can do this". No, I can't not by myself anyway.

Yes, feels very Japanese and looks like thin plywood on aluminum edge connectors. He's an artist and maybe isn't aware he is.

I am always looking forward to your videos Bryce, and I want to live in a tiny house just still need to convince my boyfriend to do the same, I don't wanna die paying a house. Here in Cali is about $500,000 for a "normal" house. I rather pay $30,000 and have my house for ever :)
Thanks Tania! I'm sure you can find some videos of homes on our channel that might twist his arm. :) California is an expensive state for sure. Living in tiny homes there will become easier too, as many cities in California are legalising tiny house living, including Los Angeles!

Saw a video several years ago of a couple buying a small house in CA near Silicon Valley. Was a million dollars! Crazy. A friend told me last week a 1 bedroom apartment in LA runs $2,000 a month. Insanity. That would be enough of a reason for me to leave the state.
Agreed. I’m young and I am planning on building my own tiny house for that reason. There is no way in hell anyone could convince me to spend an ungodly amount of money on a permanent dwelling

The giant table art is masterpiece because it means living space is not divided up for living and dining. One big space for all. I like the really big built in sofa too.

Great house. One minor detail - do any Americans actually hang their washing in the fresh air to dry? Has this actually occurred to them? They all seem to waste power drying clothes in a dryer!! Nice video - good on them. What a great achievement.
FlowerGrower Smith People used to hang their wash out years ago, but it fell out of favor. I remember as a small child in the 1970's my mother hanging wet wash out on a line. She stopped doing it because she said it was too much work. Also, many newer neighborhoods and subdivisions have rules against people hanging their wash out to dry-it is not allowed. I can tell you why-it is thought to make the neighborhood look bad.

People do, but what about when it rains for two weeks continuously? I saw one where instead of a dryer there was an interior hanging area plus dehumidifier, and thought that was pretty smart. Tiny houses do sometimes have humidity problems, so the dehumidifier served two functions.
FlowerGrower Smith that washer dryer combo is ventless. The dryer spins to dry the clothes. Also the Smokey mountains is a moist rainforest like weather in the spring/summer which makes it difficult to completely dry clothes outside. When and IF it is nice out with low humidity I do hang my clothes to dry.
Many washer/dryers also have heater and tumble dry function with external venting. I have one.
Mary Anne Brown : I hang my laundry and I get complaints and threats of fines from my village in suburban Chicago. Ironically, I live in a "Historic district," and the history is the 1880's-1890's. Guess how people dried laundry back then?
However, I would like a washer/dryer combination like this couple has because we wash clothes also during the winter.

I loved this home and the couple that built it. He is so capable. I hope they love living there.
I llke it BUT I would get a real couch. I don't think it's comfortable and since there is a guest loft, there is no need for a pullout couch.
Agreed, they could get actually get a much more comfortable couch that's also a pullout... but they'd sacrifice the underneath storage space.

OK, this one is really amazing. A lot of them are really neat and have cool features and everything, but this one is really something that would absolutely work well for me.
I was thinking of a 20ft trailer, with or without gooseneck; but seeing how much nicer it can be on a 24ft trailer... I'm now considering switching over and having a downstairs bedroom too. Amazing job by these folks, I thank them for the inspiration and wish them the best.
And thanks Bryce for putting them in the spotlight and bringing their awesome design to my attention.

Being debt free is just indescribable! You don't need a huge house to be happy!
In most of these tiny houses they have composting toilets which eliminated need for sewer but I'm curious as to what the set up is for getting fresh water and getting rid of the grey water. Can you go into that detail when you review the tiny houses?
They also seemed to have their gas tank for the oven (and I assume the hot water as well) in the garden instead of in the tiny house. I think this is quite smart if your winters dont get too cold and if you do not plan to move your house too much.
Additionally, I would be interested to know more about how they planned insulation and heating.
OMG! I died hearing her comment about her/his future self being “60-years-old” and not wanting to go up and down a ladder!!!! Haha, I’m 60 and I can go up and down a ladder or stairs ALL day. In fact I hope to never have a home without stairs! My great Aunt Verna lived to be 101. And she lived in a 2nd floor apartment. Stairs are good for our hearts

The accomplished a regular first floor bedroom, everyone should copy that. That big sofa bed, art-long table and big shower with Rain shower head, little porch, just fantastic.
where are these tiny houses located? I mean, do they have an address? How do people get their mail? How about house taxes? do they pay that? They never cover any of that.
It seems as though alot of these people featured have family or friends with land, that they park on. The rest look for land they can rent🤷🏾♀️
Maybe because it is none of our business, and nothing a smart person would post for the entire world. Many have to live "stealth," and all it takes its one nosey neighbor to get the bureaucrats to pay a visit. They can share a mailbox with the landlord or rent a PO or UPS box. House taxes? What house? It's technically an RV if you leave the wheels on. Until local councils recognize the tiny house as a legitimate, livable Residential structure with a Certificate of Occupancy (in the US), people will have to fly under the radar. That's why most of these people do NOT get specific about exactly where they live.

Honestly, I'm happy for every single person, couple, family or friends who are making the steps to Own a grid free home. It's amazing the creativity, effort, and outcome of these people. 🏡💞💪👏👏👏👏👏
All that motivates all of them to have tiny home are the same conscious of taking life from awareness perspective, ownership of own life! Brilliant we are going in the right direction!!!

I've always found the lofted bedroom to be a barrier to a tiny house too, but honestly, that's such a great idea, keeping the bedroom downstairs. I'm storing this away in my tiny house idea folder.
Beautiful home with my favorite bright colors. Awesome and down to earth couple with a handsome son. The stairs with no rails is scary. I hope whoever goes upstairs for the night take their drinks and stay up. For real.
