Even for people who have no idea who the Master is, this introduction is so wonderfully sinister you understand precisely what a threat he is immediately and recognise his significance in spite of the fact they won't have seen him before this.
It showcases everything we need to know about him while simultaneously revealing nothing of import about him.

It's one of the best re-introductions of a villain ever. They laid all the clues through the season, with various scenes, and it was hinted a whole series before. This is why Davies' is still fondly remembered, his writing was extremely tight and everything fits together eventually.

When this episode first aired I was 7 or 8 and it got me so unbelievably excited and I've basically never lost that feeling when I watched this episode
The Professor's transition from congenial old man to menancing Master demonstrates the brilliance of Sir Derek Jacobi. You feel the dread at the evil he has become all from the change of expression in his eyes. I get a chill every time I see that! I so wish he could have stayed on a bit as the Master, he would have been outstanding - such a great actor.
Interesting you should say that. Derek Jacobi has been doing audio dramas for Big Finish playing the War Master. Basically, his incarnation is the one that fought in the Time War. His incarnation can only be described as the Hannibal Lecter Master.

Yes, I had known he’d done some Big Finish, but I haven’t heard any of those stories yet. Also, even though Big Finish is separate from the main series, the recent ones overlap with current storylines. I certainly wouldn’t want to spoil anything inadvertently for our Gallifrey Gals!😀
I loved the John Mann incarnation of the Master, but like you, there was this awful regret, that I may have just the greatest Master ever, and only got a few minutes out of him.
it makes me so greedy. Like I wish we'd had half a season with Jacobi as the master, before he had to regenerate.

I remember watching this when it first came out. Imagine having to wait a whole week to watch the next episode! This still gives me the shivers now.
There was no better way to bring back the Master than by using Derek Jacobi. Shame he wasn't around for longer, but Big Finish have done several audio dramas in which Jacobi plays the character fighting in the Time War.
She takes the time to know the voices of Roger Delgado and Anthony Ainley. Katrina is such a beautiful, geeky, nerd. She makes my pulse go all wibbley-wobbley, timey-whimey.

Yes, a Time Lord's true name is secret. Titles like The Doctor and The Master are chosen by the individual in question, but quite a few Time Lords also have a second name they sometimes used. During his time at the Academy, the Doctor was nicknamed Theta Sigma (shortened to Theta), but that name was only ever used at the Academy.
You also have to keep in mind that Time Lords are all telepathic. Speaking to each other also likely had mental components during conversation that added more depth.

Bit of trivia: Sir Derek Jacobi (Yana/The Master) played Hamlet in a BBC production in 1980, and his Ophelia was Lalla Ward (Romana II in Classic Who, and then-wife of the great Tom Baker).
and had already played The Master in the 2003 animated story Scream of the Shalka.
Well, of course Sir Derek also played Claudius in 'I, Claudius', with a guy named John Hurt playing Caligula.

And in that 1980 production of Hamlet, Claudius was played by Patrick Stewart, who also played Claudius to David Tennant's Hamlet in a 21st century televised BBC production. Sir Patrick also teased Lalla for co-starring in Doctor Who during the making of the Jacobi version, which is amusing considering the role Sir Patrick would best become known for years later.
Even though 'Blink' has the better story, I feel this is the better episode for reactions. Only this episode's revelations have Paula go on a 98-word rant in 37.61s, and ends with a 😱face at 13:43.
Paula's reactions at the end of the episode were like an excited child on Christmas Day - the most energetic she's ever been. :)

That meltdown at the end was wonderful. Think of how hard it's been for US to keep silent this entire time! Best way to explain The Master is think of The Doctor as Sherlock Holmes and The Master as Professor Moriarty. An equal in every way to The Doctor but batshit crazy and evil.

While he was dying and regeneration is usually reserved for renewing a Time Lords life but if the Time Lord is skilled enough they can regenerate at will and even choose their new form. In classic Who the Doctor traveled with a Time Lord named Romana for a while and she regenerated simply because she was bored with her last body and chose to take the form of someone they met before.
"I'm brilliant!"
That's the moment Tenant took over as my unquestioned favorite. I don't know exactly why, but that line always tickles me and, to me, sums up, in a lot of ways, who the doctor is.
That was a blast! This is instantly my favorite of all the reactions you've ever done. Paula bubbling over with questions, excitement and apprehension and Katrina's glee at getting such a big reaction and finally being able to talk about some of the things that have been revealed in this episode. Just terrific!

Oh, and just be glad the Time Lords you're seeing _do_ have titles like that. Time Lords' actual names tend to be needlessly long and a bit silly (looking at you, Inquisitor Darkelastaquistahastrad).

rocketcon It would be tough to do at this point, as she’s already seen it by now.
I love that this episode shows also what kind of a person the Master would be without... well... can we call it nurture? Brilliant, kind and willing to sacrifice himself to help others. I don't think that the Master will ever turn "good" on the show (he is too much fun as a villain), but this makes him a more interesting one, at least in my eyes.
It does imply that he at least has the capacity for some kind of goodness, or that he can recognise it and strive for it if he wants to. I do love the moment where Yana is all 'my genius is unrecognised' because that also shows that the Master's vainglory is present in the human, the way the Doctor's heroism was present in John Smith.

This episode is so well done in how it's structured.
Captain Jack serves as the perfect red herring, the audience believes his return to the show is the highlight of the episode. Then we get a story that seems very predictable. He's clearly going to save the last humans, we've seen him do this many times before. But Jack's back, and that enhances the experience. Also he can't die, which adds a bit of mystery.
It's only when we are almost through the episode when the tone suddenly changes. There is something very wrong with Professor Yana.
And then he shows Martha his FOB watch. New Whovians are jumping up in their seats, and Classic Whovians have the old dusty gears in their heads suddenly start to turn.
No. Freaking. Way.
He's back.
I have come to realise how clever Katrina is, such a brilliant guide for Paula, playing along with her without any revealing emotions on her face, but when she’s not looking those little smiles for us, thanks I’m loving this series, keep it up, when you do catch up, what will you do in between, classic, s.j.a, torchwood or class?

"Think of what the face of bo said... his dying words". It was at that moment that Jack knew he would one day eventually die. The beauty of it being he knew the exact moment cause it was Martha and the Doctor at his side when it would happen
The Master. The Doctor's oldest friend and greatest enemy. Their relationship is like the silent feud between Xboxers and Playstationists. They both despise everything about each other, but in that same regard hold each other in deep respect.

Interesting Fact: The character of the Master was supposed to be killed off in the last series (1973-1974) of the Third Doctor (Jon Pertwee) with an epic face-off between him and the Doctor; but Delgado was killed in a car crash in Turkey before shooting began. That, in part, was a factor for Pertwee deciding to leave "Doctor Who", since he and Delgado were really close friends.

Just seen you gals reacts to The End of Time part I & II. Looking forward to the coming 11 and 12 saga's!
Chantho is probably my favorite all time Doctor Who character - not only is her costume absolutely amazing (and so different), but she's just such a genuinely nice person; when humans arrived at her homeworld, she allowed them in, helped them build their rocket to reach Utopia, supported Professor Yana in his work and life - and then, when she realized Yana was dangerous, she was willing to kill him, even at the cost of her life, to protect the dream of Utopia for the humans.
I would've loved for her to be a companion of the Doctor, even just for a couple of episodes. Though I am not dissatisfied with the emotional end to her story as it is.
