  • The concentration camps of the Third Reich were one of the greatest horrors in the history of mankind. The best known of all was Auschwitz, located 43 kilometers west of Krakow, Poland. It opened its doors in 1940 and closed in 1945, when it was liberated by the Soviet army. During those years, millions of people were subjected to the most terrible suffering, and massive killings were carried out that, even today, continue to amaze for their extreme cruelty. However, there are dozens of stories from this killing center that most people don't know about.

This time last year, Nov 2021, I visited Auschwitz. It was a freezing cold, drizzly day which, somehow made it more realistic and more miserable. Our tour guide was fantastic and the exhibitions were humbling and sad. If you ever visit the fantastic Polish city of Krakow, one of your days must be set aside for this visit. It is a history that must be learned and remembered.

I think it would destroy me, emotionally and mentally. I admire people such as yourself who visit Auschwitz with a respectful attitude, who wish to honour the memory of those who lost their lives in such a horrific way. Not forgetting the survivors, who witnessed the death, destruction and diabolical atrocities that were carried out there. We say "These things must never happen again" but tragically similar human rights violations still occur, such as with the Uighur Muslim people in China. They are being held in concentration camps for "re-education" and God only knows what abuse goes on there. Yet other countries stand by and let it happen, because they don't want to lose trading links with China.

My Nan was born in Germany and her family were anti Hitler, her dad (my great grandad) would get dragged from their house and beaten on a regular basis. As a young child her and two of her brothers got separated from the rest of the family durning this time and my Nan and her brothers would roam the streets and eat out of bins. Eventually it was too much for her baby brother and he died in my Nans arms 😢. She eventually reunited with her family and then years later met my grandad (who was Ukrainian) then moved to the UK where she had a nice life, but the events of the war never left her…she would rarely talk about war time Germany but when she did she would get angry and upset and would call Hitler a ‘bastard’. She passed away early this year at the age of 84 but enjoyed the life she had made for herself in England. This is the REAL story of how prisoner Franciszek Gajowniczek survived. Yes, he was one of the 10 men selected to die as a punishment for the missing prisoner, who was later found drowned in a latrine. Another prisoner, a Catholic priest named Maximilian Kolbe volunteered to take Gajowniczek’s place, who was married with children. Fr Kolbe died following what Jesus said, “No greater love has a man than to lay down his life for his friends.” (John 15:13) To kill him the Nazis starved St Maximilian Kolbe and then injected him with cyanide. He has been canonized for his heroic love.

The toilets were horrible, there was a plank that run from one end of the building to the other, there was holes in the plank so it sat about 50 people next to each other, there was a shallow trench underneath, they were only allowed seconds to use it. If they lingered they were shot! The men that were too sick to work had to clean it out with their bare hands. The Germans wouldn't go in there in case they got sick!!
Inside one of the buildings was huge cabinets, one had human hair, plaits, baby hair. There was another one with shoes, babies, women's and mens. There was a cart which they used to deliver bread to the huts, they would use the same one to take any dead bodies to the crematorium then load more bread on it.

The man who survived Auschwitz, Franciszek Gajowniczek, was chosen with 9 others to be sent to a starvation bunker, when a escaped prisoner couldn't be found. He cried after being chosen, "My wife, my children, what will become of them?" After the 10 prisoners were chosen, SS guards would order the condemned to take off their shoes, and clothes, and they would be forced into a concrete bunker, the door was then sealed, where they would be left there, until they all died, without food and water. A Polish Priest, stepped forward from the ranks of prisoners, and approached the SS commandant. The man's name was Father Maximillian Kolbe, and offered to take Franciszek's place. His wish was granted, and he died in his place in the starvation bunker. Franciszek never forgot the selfess sacrifce that Kolbe made for him, and returned to Auschwitz every year to honor the memory of Kolbe. He lived to age 90.
Later, Pope John Paul II, canonized Maxilliam Kolbe as a living Saint.

I'm surprised you didn't include the story of Franciscan Priest Maximilian Kolbe, who offered to take the place of another prisoner, who'd been randomly selected to die by starvation, along with nine others. As you mentioned, for every attempted escape, ten prisoners were put to death. Fr. Kolbe, a Polish, Franciscan, Catholic Priest, who had devoted his life to spreading the Gospel of Christ, cheifly by spreading the sublime devotion of Total Consecration to Mary, the Mother of God, and the Mother of all humanity, bore witness to the tremendous power of this Marian devotion by freely offering to take the place of a prisoner. The prisoner, upon being chosen, begged for his life to be spared, for the sake of his wife and children. Kolbe boldly and heroically stepped forward, offering to take the place of this man, stating to the guards that he was a Catholic Priest. Intrigued, if not amazed, the guards permitted Fr. Kolbe to take the man's place. Fr. Kolbe and the nine other chosen prisoners were led off to the bunker, to die of starvation. Kolbe was an inspiration to his fellow prisoners, preaching to them of the eternal reward that awaited them, singing hymns, leading Scripture study from memory. Eventually, all but Kolbe had died of starvation. On the eve of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary into Heaven, the greatest Marian Solemnity, Fr. Kolbe was administered a lethal injection by the SS Guard, and passed into his eternal reward. He was Beatified and, ultimately, Canonized, by Pope St. John Paul II, and is the first Saint to ever have been referred to as a "Martyr of Charity."

Along with boxing, there was also an orchestra. They would sometimes play for those being taken to the gas chambers. They would have to play any time the guards wanted.
Once, Mengele brought in a bunch A dwarfs. The dwarfs had outfits made for them and they had a whole concert with Mengele among them. They cheered and sang along...and afterwards were sent to the gas chamber.

The story came from one of them. Honestly from what I know of Mengele and how some of his quirks, it isn't THAT much of a stretch. It could have even been a batch of the dwarfs he used to entertain the SS that she misunderstood as them being guests. Its truly not that crazy.

When I was 21, I was in a local bar with friends. There were men from Italy and Germany working in the town temporarily. I sat and talked with a German man. We came upon the conversation about the Holocaust. He asked me why I believed it had happened. I said there’s overwhelming evidence, survivors and we learned about it in school. He said, that I had learned the “American version”, which was basically false and that he had learned “the German version” of what may or may not have happened. He made a good point in that I had indeed learned an American version and he the German version, but I stressed that I did indeed believe that it not only happened but that the atrocities were quite accurate. He disagreed. We parted ways at that point.
