Great video! With regards to potential hacking vectors, would it be ideal to keep your devices on a LAN or would that not be possible with the tech?

One thing that is a royal pain in the ass, at least with low end cameras, is changing motion detection sensitivity settings. You can have one menu on the NVR and slide a bunch of bars, or 30 separate cameras with 30 separate IPs and 30 separate logins and ahhhhhhhhhh... scalability on that. What a nightmare when you realize you need more sensitivity. What you said at 16:46 about bad configurations couldn't be truer.
It is worth configuring to some extent. A lot of NVRs that are priced where most will actually pay for them have shit incoming bandwidth. I mean your regular small office or deli. A bank or 100 user organization will pay for good stuff, fuck if a deli is paying for AXIS cameras most of the time. :(
I saw a Hikvision NVR, 16 channel, max incoming bandwidth 100 mbps. That's 6.25 mbps per stream. After overhead, closer to 4-5 mbps, because when you use 6.25 mbps for 16 cameras it claims you run out far sooner.
It advertises 5 megapixel compatibility. You know what 5 megapixel images at 4 mbps look like, with embedded-ip-camera-level encoding... shit :(

Eli, this is a great video. I've been doing Big Data in the modern format since Feb 2014 and lately have been contemplating making a Hadoop cluster of 4-8 Odroid XU4's and a new D-1541 low-powered Xeon server running Hypervisor level1 virtual masternodes on fx. ESXi. Should be awesome in a tight closed network.
I know this video is basically about that "local big data" (or local initial machine learning) and then solving an initial subproblem (or even just zipping the data before sending it) but this exactly what I will be doing down the line. Already doing some Rpi2 motion sensors that does some initial intelligent processing on data picked up and then streams important outliers to Kafka and then on through Spark and into a website that runs an auto-updating JS control to show "live delayed" data from all the Rpi's. Its really neat that a major YT'er (>500k subs) cover this stuff, thanks again!

Pushing computing/intelligence to edge of the network instead of in servers. For IoT so less bandwidth is needed. Example, instead of sending surveillance data to server to compute, we could compute in surveillance camera itself most of time and send the most relevant data to server. Devices can decide when to send data and when not to. Price of technology becoming cheaper which enables edge computing. For example, raspberry Pi just 5 euros. Also, number of devices becoming too much for single server to handle, so we need to distribute computing to devices. Reducing load of network --> reduce load of server. Offers new functionalities that never thought about yet. Problems of edge computing: bad configurations more common. Hacking concerns. License costs because adding functionalities is separate thing.

Thanks for your videos, they are very helpful. I have a question for you and hopefully you can answer it because I'm very confused now. I currently work in IT industry(at the bottom), and for the last year I've been studying servers, networking, and all of the Microsoft stuff to prepare myself for a jump into system administration. However, recently I've heard a lot(A LOT!) of talks about the Cloud and how it's going to kill jobs like sysadmin and so on. We just rolled our on-premise exchange server into the cloud(365 platform) and management is now talking about virtualizing all of out desktop boxes. All I hear now is optimization, downsizing the workforce, and new job postings for sysadmin now require a mix a different disciplines(unix, windows, networking, and some coding). So I looks like you will need to be a
master of many trades in order to compete and survive in the IT field. I feel like I just waisted a year for studying obsolete technology. Can you share your 2c about this?

+OUALID OUALIDOS You should these questions ask at the Toms Hardware forums instead. But if you only consider these options, then the 3543, as it has the best CPU and an Nvidia gfx card. The Nvidia cards are great but may burn out in 2-3 yrs time. That said, with patience, screwdriver and care, you can replace it yourself, or just get the insurence.
No matter which laptop you choose ALWAYS get an SSD hard drive, not an iron one, even if there isn't much space on it.
Personally though, I would rather get a laptop from Eurocom dot com (M5 Pro) even if they are in Canada and just keep it on power all the time. Battery and gaming are not good friends.

will be fun when edge computing will morph into crypto Blockchain computing, and then you will hate us who dont worship money and make technology for the greater good rather than filling our own pockets only.
