This film was so much fun and absolutely hysterical! Whether people call it an actual sequel or just a film set in the same sort of universe, I thought it was a lot of fun the way that they made this work; video game instead of board game, you're the characters of that video game, and so on. Truly an entertaining time and I thoroughly enjoyed myself.

"This is Allen Parish's house. I'm just living in it." that line is so subtly awesome, not only paying tribute to the original movie but directly to Robin Williams himself and how he made the original such a classic that so many people still enjoy it even today almost 30 years later
I misted up really hard when it showed up. I was so apprehensive of this movie, even with this cast. I'm so glad it ended up amazing.
I don’t know why, but I always tear up when Alex reveals he named his daughter Bethany. Loved this film when it came out and the sequel is just as good. Great reaction.

Robin Williams had already been gone a few years when this film was made, which cold as it might sound, I truly believe worked out to the movie's benefit. The writers weren't under any pressure to give Alan Parrish a role in the film and could focus purely on building the new characters who they were hoping could launch a new series (and did!), and the nod we get with Alex living in Alan's old treehouse is the perfect tribute to Williams' legacy without overtaking the film at all.
I think Jack Black does an AMAZING job in this. He plays it up just enough to be believable without being over the top.
Karen Gillan (Ruby Roundhouse) plays Nebula in the MCU. And if you're having trouble seeing it with all the makeup she's under in that role, just watch the scene of Martha trying to flirt with the guards, where she uses the exact same voice.

When the first Jumanji came out in 1995, there actually were a lot of jokes about how kids didn't play board games anymore and it should have become a video game (the original picture book was written in 1981, when Atari was the king of the home video game market, but they still weren't as ubiquitous as they'd become once Nintendo got into the game). And the funny thing is, when the ads for this film started, a lot of fans from the first movie hated the idea and said it was trying too hard to be "hip" with the young kids, only to end up with egg on their face when the movie's own story fully acknowledges that's what the game itself is doing.
If you think about it, the entire Jumanji world as of this point uses Video Game Logic instead of Real World or even Boardgame Logic (like the original Jumanji). Hence three lives, bad guys exploding on contact from a boomerang, and cut scenes with information that makes the player aware of the games story. But there are a lot of nods to the boardgame throughout. The game pieces are seen as magic items or totems, how they enter the game world is a nod towards Alan Parrish getting trapped in the Jungle for several years, and of course all the wildlife being Jumanji specific breeds.
jack black actually spent a lot of time talking to the younger actress and watching a lot of valley girl type movies as research for the character. Each of the older and younger actors were the directors 1st choice....amazing they were all available at the same time
I have never been a great Jack Black fan, but I can't think of anyone who could play this role better. He was my favourite character in the film. Overall a great performance from all.
In an interview the Rock was asked what his favorite part of making this movie was and he responded "watching Jack Black act like a teenage girl." Like can you imagine how much fun they all probably had on set

Thank you for another great reaction!!! I feel like Jumanji is one of the few sequels/reboots that not only succeeds but absolutely excels in both honouring the original film and existing as it’s own thing. I would absolutely recommend watching the next one- it retains the comedy but brings back even more of the emotion and heart that the original film had in spades.
I like some of the little details they put in this, like respawning. The two action characters land on their feet, the girl literally does a superhero landing, and the two story characters are just dropping in like a sack of potatoes.
When this came out, I decided on a whim to go see this in the theater. I was pleasantly surprised and laughed so hard at certain moments. I like that they took it in this fresh, new direction vs some rehash to the original Jumanji.
A rehash was what I expected, which is why I didn't watch it until recently. I thoroughly expected to be disappointed, but I LOVED it. The fact that they both took it in its own direction, while simultaneously retaining the original as canon and paying homage to it was brilliant. I cry-laughed the whole way through 😂

There is also Zathura: A Space Adventure (2005), which while not the same game is based on a book written by the author of the original movie and is considered to be in the same "franchise".

What a fun reaction. I saw this in the movie theater and we all laughed ourselves silly. I love Karen Gillan. She is one of the most naturally funny actresses out there. She was way underused in this movie.
This cast was just chefs kiss! 🤌 Jack Black playing a valley girl was something no one ever knew that we needed. I love how they developed such a good friendship while being stuck in the game it's amazing!

Next Level is just as much fun. The crew clearly pushed themselves to give the film its own purpose rather than just repeating this one, and the result is awesome.

If you want more of that type of comedy, you should definitely check out "The Hot Chick" starring Rob Schneider.
My only complaint is that Ruby Roundhouse, 'killer of men', doesn't kill enough men 😅 I guess we can chalk it up to Martha not being a violent person.
Updating from board game to video game is a natural evolution, and I really enjoy the requels. I would love to see them keep getting churned out so long as the leads are having fun.

I didn't see this film because I so loved the first one I didn't really want a sequel to ruin it. Eventually watched it and was happily surprised by how good it was. SO FUNNY! The sequel to this was also really funny, I think you will really like it!
I took my nephew to see this and we bonded hard over this movie. We quote this to each other. I have the song in my music and when it plays when he’s in the car, we jam out. When the second movie was announced, his text to me was only ‘we’re going, right??’

Welcome back to jumanji. Has to be a sequel since it kind of starts where Robin's movie left us with his board game in the sand. I didn't want to see it and was extremely surprised. I like how the board game path pattern is seen a couple times in this. The kids all learned something. Jack made Bethany was my favorite. Resets time just like the original. The"next level"is an actual sequel. It has more characters and is very entertaining, but I liked this one more. You will like it.

If I may, I'd like to recommend, in honour of the death of Louise Fletcher ("One Flew Over the CooCoo's Nest") a great hidden gem of a sci-fi called "Brainstorm" (1983)! You will love it!

I LOVE this "sequel", and I am usually very sceptical to these new sequels for old classics. This one is brilliant. All the actors did an excellent job with their characters, but Jack Black was the best at channeling the narcissistic 16 year old girl. The next movie is just as fun, adding Danny Devito, Danny Glover and Awkwafina.

Jack Black and Karen Gillan are just amazing in this one. Pure fun comedy. I didn't really wanted to see it since the original is such a childhood classic, but eventually i gave it a chance and really enjoyed it (plus the lovely node to the original movie with Alan Parrish house)
The funny thing about Martha/Ruby asking why she'd be wearing a crop top and shorts in the jungle is that when the first promo photo came out showing the four main characters, people were _flaming_ on Ruby's appearance, calling it sexist or misogynistic.
I am fully assuming that they did that on purpose since so many women in video games wear skimpy outfits while the men get huge armor outfits 😂
Zathura is the first quasi-sequel to Jumanji.
Exact same basic concept as the original, just a different game. And nearly as good!

Jack Black is hands down the best part of the movie. There was no other actor on Earth who could pull off a spoiled popular high school girl in the body of a middle aged man. He nailed it in hilarious fashion.
I'd call it maybe a "soft reboot?" Not really a sequel, but not a full reboot either. More an evolution.
In the original Jumanji, it ends going back to Alan Parrish and the girl's childhood, and it changed history too. There's a party at the end, where Alan Parrish and the girl are now a couple, and they greet the "current" little boy and girl and exchange a knowing look, like the kids somehow know something is up. But their parents are still alive too. So it doesn't mess with the rules to have the kid stuck in the game for 20 years go back to his own time and change history.
When they first announced this movie and I saw trailers I thought they were just trying to make a reboot and were going to completely mess up the original's legacy. So, I never watched it. Then a few months ago they had both the newer movies on sale and I said, what the hell, it has Jack Black and I love that dude. Best. Money. Ever. Spent. Jack Black makes this whole movie for me. I could have never been on set. I'd have had to wear diapers to keep from pissing myself laughing. I would pay to see Jack Black play every character kinda like a Nutty Professor type movie lmao

Well, they're both cheating, really.
What made this film was not only they found a way to pay a small tribute Robin Williams, but they found a way to build on the world more as well as the new characters without the pressure of high expectations. The actors understood their respective roles and gave a great performance! I must recommend beside the sequel Jumanji: The Next Level, the spin-off film Zathura. It’s like Jumanji but in outer space and it stars younger Josh Hutcherson and Kristian Stewart.
