- March 8th is National Proofreading Day! It is a day to promote error free writing, especially those in school submitting midterms soon.
In this video, Howard discusses and demonstrates how in letterpress printing, the first print you make is called a proof so it can be proofread for errors. That is very important because when we set type, we set type upside down and left to right because we print the mirror image on the paper. That’s why it is important to mind your p’s and q’s.
That is the case for what Howard printed in 36 point Cheltenham Bold font. The first print said “Proofreabing” but Jared proofread it. Howard corrected the mistake with the second print with “Proofreading.” This was printed with black rubber base ink using our Washington hand press.
Speaking of our Washington hand press, it was made in 1852 in Cincinnati, Ohio by the Charles Foster & Brother Company. It was initially used for publication work such as newspapers and books. However, as other more efficient printing presses were invented, many hand presses were still used as proofing presses.

Get rid of robots, bring this back!
Now that’s going hard.
That would be cool but a newspaper would cost $20 lol 😊😊😊😊😊
@@mm3mm3for what it's worth, that's the asking price for some of these low level newspaper subscriptions.
I’m so early yay! I love that you are keeping this alive & well, and on top of that, sharing your work with the world. I think this is so cool.
Great demo of ‘proofreading’!
Everybody need bread and butter.
New should be welcomed by not forgetting and ignoring the old.
Everybody loves Howard and Jarrod! 😊😊😊😊😊
What does that expression mean? I understand what 'mind your P's and Q's means' but what does 'losing your B's and D's mean'?
