Thank you for watching! And thank you for all your comments, I love making videos for you all!
If you're new to Actualol, my name is Jon Purkis. My two passions are writing comedy and playing board games, so I decided to combine the two in this CZcams channel.
I make all my videos on my own, in my flat in London, UK, with the help of a diverse selection of wigs.

You are simply the coolest dude on earth. I love your funny "roleplay" to bring out a point! Im started to show you videos to everyone entering my boardgametable. "Yes we will play the game soon but before doing this watch this awesome guy"!
Isnt he cool and funny? These rap parts??? You are the best!
if you are here just for Jon's rap skills:
0:09 2:33 15:45
you're welcome
Waiting for the supercut without all the talky parts :D
Amazing raps man! Somehow I am now an even bigger fan of your stuff! (thats incredible because my fandom was already maxed out!) I make a lot of foam core inserts myself. And the other person is right: it’s all about a sharp blade and swift, decisive cuts (sometimes cutting twice is easier)
Don’t forget Plano’s tackle box organizers and reusable silicone cupcake cups.
I gotta say, the quality of this video is outstanding! You’ve really evolved the content you use to have 1-2 years ago. It still feels like the stuff I love about your channel, but leveled up! Wonderful job, can’t wait to see more!
It looks like most of the problem you had with your homemade foam trays, was that you weren't using a sharp enough knife.
Foam blunts blades really quickly and as soon as it does, you'll get ripping and tearing.
So, get yourself a knife handle and quite a lot of new sharp blades and it'll go fine.
I'd recommend Swann Morton scalpels over X-acto knives as the blades are thinner, sharper and cheaper.
Also, use a steal ruler, you'll just ruin a plastic one and that'll make the job harder.
Interesting! Thanks for the tip :)
I actually have a Gerber EAB, which uses stock razor blades in it. Then I got a GIANT pack of single edge razor blades. Basically like using a box knife, for this exact use.
I am a huge fan of Folded Space inserts. I already own 11 inserts from them and 5 others are on their way :)
Great video, really helpful to hear such a thorough breakdown of the different options in the marketplace!
Fantastic presentation. First class and professional production. Thank you John!
There's this limit point where an insert becomes SO bespoke that it actually takes more work to put everything away. Broken Token is about my limit. If I can use straight up counter trays like the ones GMT manufactures, I go with those. In fact I think that's how I'm storing most of the Robinson Crusoe bits.
Another amazing video with another awesome intro. Loving it. The topic of inserts is huge of course and your video really covered all areas. Thank you for sharing. :)
"I don't get out of bed for less than 400 gauge, but then I have a problem"
This was great! We're still on level 1 with the baggies. We have thousands and I'm sure Amazon have been suspicious of our baggy purchasing habits.
We've always wanted to get into the foam or wooden insert game but it's money we can use to buy a new game so it's tricky.
I have only crafted few little dividers and things like that but never done or bought full inserts like those.
The foam ones looked so nice it made me go to look up which one of my games would be nice to try it on.
Not sure what part made it pop for me, but the video looked reeeal nice, so thanks for it!
Really enjoyed this video, well done mate!
I run a boardgame group and a lot of our games could use some help considering so many new people take them out and put them back. Bought a couple of these! Thank you for the suggestions!
Loving the tap at the start... And the level 1 drug dealer reference! I found your channel because someone shared this rap with me... Keep the videos coming! Looking forward to your games of 2019 at the end of the year. At 100+ board games you seem to be playing a year, I value your opinion :-)
I'm level 1 and just have many nice bit bowls on the game table. I like having bowls for tokens rather than having them in tight fitting slots. Foam core is cool because you can buy it after market if it helps. Game Trayz is frustrating because they're getting into games during their production which is increasing the cost of the game and then they dont hold sleeved cards or something. I really wish Kickstarters would quit including Game Trayz.
OMG! I can't believe I have just seen this one! hilarious. Jon, you are a legend.
Excellent, Jon! I've been level 1 for decades but am moving into level 2. Geek boxes can be great for games with lots of counters. For Star Wars X-Wing of course I'm level 3 and beyond - not just inserts but whole storage systems from the likes of FeldHerr and Cog O'Two.
Great video, plano boxes are also a good option. I have one for my copy of Robinson Crusoe which helped a lot with set up
Great video. I also like Tower Rex, which makes Broken Token-quality inserts for about half the price. The only problem being the high shipping cost.
Could not agree with this more... ever since I started doing my own organizing with simple, cheap, but effective things from Michael's it's been a breeze setting things up and putting them away. Heck part of the fun of a new game is 'How do I ogranize this!'
Some of the games come with a great insert, but most do not. And once the expansion happens, the original box insert usually gets removed and all the stuff is put into one box if possible.
I will say I do like the Geek boxes as well, but there are a lot of great, inexpensive options at a store like Michael's or another craft store. I have found containers that are perfect for Protected cards, as well as for meeples and tokens alike. They snap shut and stack on top of each other and are like $1 for 3.
I have a bad addiction to buying and building game inserts. I'm often disappointed when a game doesn't have an after-market insert. I had to build my own for Fortune & Glory the Cliffhanger game.
One good thing, for me, is that I live in San Diego, CA, so Broken Token is a local company for me. I've had to drive up to the factory to pick-up an insert package for one of my games.
You can mark inside the game boxes and label them using the insert it self to do the marking layout. red or black markers work well.
The Streets - on par mate 😁
Indeed... late to the party over here, but as soon as he first burst into rhyme I was immediately thinking of Mike Skinner! Spot on.
This was the video that made me fall in love with custom made inserts.
Component boxes are the best - 6 by 3 or something, it’s like geek boxes all stuck together, but you only have to open one lid. Love them - basically broken token but not insanely expensive
“Spill out your chits”. I see what you did there.
"to take care of your ... bits"
Great job on whole video!😍
Great video as always. Just my own preference...but more games over inserts. Inserts are very pricey.
This is a totally valid viewpoint. However, I love having all my games in ultimate condition, and I already hardly have space for the ones I have... so I spend my money on ways to fit more expansions and bits into the same boxes.

I agree with your point aswell. Space is hard to come by and expansions help u keep that game feeling new without the need for extra space. Is just the moment that I begin to buy an insert for a game im going to want it for all of them. So i insist in just buying a shiny new board game.
A fair point. But this is like the sleeves discussion. If you want to sleeve then sleeve. If not, then don't.
Same here, if you like inserts then have at it. If not, then don't.
A discussion if should or shouldn't is meaningless.
I design inserts and upload them to thingaverse for 3d printing at home. Many are available from lots of people. I've done Concordia, steampunk rally, fallout, supermotherload, forsale, and mideval academy .
Well done John
I can also vouch for the Game Trayz insert for Brew Crafters. It's a really fun game, but almost unplayable without the insert due to set up alone. Now that I've got the Game Trayz, I get it to the table much more often.
I also have the Game Trayz inserts for Terra Mystica, and can't recommend them enough.
Very, very well done
For the custom inserts, the Dead of Winter was probably a poor choice to represent Broken Token; most other Broken Token inserts (of the ones I have anyway) are completely removable from the box and are used in-game
it's just me or you forget about 3D printing your own insert ?
we have being doing it for a while - do a quick design in Fusion or DL from thingiverse...3D print and PLAY !
been considering trying to have my local library do a print job for me to try this out. anyone try that?
Just popped into my feed. That’s the Al Gore Rhythms for ya.
Fab video as always - love the rapping! The sports bra section is my favourite 😊
Some cracking rapping there Jon!
Hold it down boy, your heads getting blurred.
Aha! The ActuaShirt (TM) is back - or at least its twin brother. You do have a penchant for blue shirts, don‘t you? Caught you already red-handed, uh, I mean blue-shirted, on the last video. xD
Lmao! I just hit level 2 myself. I have been toying with the idea of buying Gloomhaven lately though. So I will definitely be leveling up to 3 when I do.
Upgraded components @ 12:06 for Champions of Midgard near the yellow dice...looks like a bloody shield and an axe? Where did you get those and what are they used for in the game? Very cool
They are from Top Shelf Gamer. And they are to replace tokens with the same icons that are in one of the expansions.
been trying for years to get the brew crafters game trayz insert. it's not been available for quite a while.
They have disposable plastic cups for ketchup etc.
I really like those dice in Dead of Winter. Where did you pick those up? The dice in the base game have always felt cheap to me
A video of just the rap, please, the whole thing all together
Surprisingly close to The Streets there :P
Lol great video, those FFG ‘valley’ inserts are the worst
Haha brilliant! (But I've never been able buy all the games I've wanted 😥)
Haha good rap. Nicely done
Oh my...
can you do a top ten card games list? millennialtoons, the rules 4 life, and uno would be in my top three
Merchants and Marauders insert seems to be unavaliable, any similar ones to recommend?
FFG games inserts, aren't inserts. They're used only to protect the components during shipping, meant to be recycled upon opening.
Skip the fancy wood inserts for nice games forever and just use the foam. Save$
Fuckin sick!
How is this so re-watchable?!?! 😜
LOL PREACH!!!! 🤣🤣🤣👏👏👏
It's super old now (in internet time) but Dan Bull challenged people to right board game raps, and while some of them are quite good, none of these people really know what it means to say Board Games... someone who knows whats what should definitely show them all a thing or two!
I just want more rap.
Mike Skinsert
Inserts: don't mug yourself 😆
You’ve not gone into the last option; the dark side of inserts where folks can lose days of their lives - custom 3D printed inserts…
Haha, I don't doubt! Too terrifying to explore, but I can see the appeal. 🫣

Where’s the secret word...?
Thanks for a really good video. I enjoyed this deep dive into a rather niche subject. I was expecting it to be about metal coins and"realistic" tokens bytt for pleasantly surprised.
I'd like to add my name to the list of "What about 3D printed inserts?" commenters. I've done one myself and here's a shameless plug for it
boardgamegeek.com/thread/2150114/ongoing-quest-build-perfect-leaving-earth-insert-m
Plastic is poison. Great rap tho.
J-LOL got more bars than inserts
Your a funny
Get a 3d printer and print your own custom inserts for cheap!
