Christopher Plummer Turned Down The Role Of Gandalf | CONAN on TBS
/ teamcoco - Komedie
He sounds like a hybrid of Ian McKellen and Patrick Stewart.
your description was so accurate I just laughed my ass off
Oh god you're right
Its just the result of good classical training in Shakespeare. But yes, he does sound a lot like Ian and Pat
@@Shamsithaca Yes how bizarre.
A panel of McKellen, Stewart, Plummer, and Gabon would be amazing.
I love it when the late night talk shows have these legendary actors on the show. Instead of always having just whoever is popular at the moment.
Yeah. Nine years later, whoever was the 'It' actor of the moment has been replaced, but Plummer had a 55-year run as a name actor in quality films and television, from The Sound of Music right up until the end with Knives Out. He was always there, even if 'only' in major supporting roles most of the time. Now THAT is a career.
Unfortunately as of today, this acting legend is no longer with us. RIP and thanks mr. Plummer for so many iconic performances. 🙏🏻
NOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!
Bugger! I thought he was still alive:(.
St.Peter needed him in a film they’re making
I'm sorry I never got to see him play Gandalf. I think he had the gravitas to pull it off. He also seemed to regret turning down the role
"I hate the son of bitch." LOL!
why did he say that
because he hates the son of a bitch
Here after hearing he passed away. Had only seen him in "Knives out" but that was enough to see he was an extraordinary actor. R.I.P Christopher Plummer
Try The Last Station.
Guys, this guy was huuuuge in the 60's due to his role in "The sound of music", which is one of the most important musicals in cinema history. I cannot believe that some classics like that are simply not known between the new generations.
I think I've only seen him in star trek vi the undiscovered country, which he is excellent in.
@@superwoman6413 A hell of a lot of young people saw The Sound of Music as kids, but don't know that was him. That's what happens when your acting career lasted for 70 years.
I would have loved him as Gandalf. So fucking suave.
Yea he would be awesome as Gandalf the same as Ian.
I agree..Ian was great as Gandalf but Christopher Plummer would have been better IMO..I LOVED him when he played that Klingon general Chang..OMG he was scary as hell..but he was GREAT in that part :)
SunshineGirlz34
Cry havoc, and let slip the Dogs of War!
Nick Rhodes
Gandalf is a tool. He used me :S
Nick Rhodes
He would have been great too. I remember him from movies I watched as a kid, a great and charismatic actor.
This interview is hilarious. I love when older people have so much spirit.
He was too busy with the Greybeards up on High Hrothgar. . .
ohthepeppers *Sigh* Time to reinstall Skyrim
Ah yes he played Paarthurnax
@@maksimlozanoski No he didn’t that’s Charles Martinet. Voice actor for Mario
What a chill guy, he really seemed to live happily
Ian McKellen and Christopher Lee were perfect for their roles. I couldn't imagine anyone else
“Bless my Homeland Forever!”
Rest in Heavenly peace, Captain
I'm glad he didn't turn down the role of Captain Von Trapp and General Chang
He wishes he did
Not to mention I’m glad he didn’t turn down Charles Muntz in Up. One of my favourite actors, was so sad when both him & Ed Asner passed away.
I feel like Christopher Plummer is a lesson in ageing, class, and generally being a gentleman.
I agree!
Then go read some of his drinking stories😂
That is because of the period and time that he came from. He was from the same generation than as to my mother's. A time where it was important to be respectful, polite and well-bred. He came from a privilieged family, a Greant grand-father who was the second prime minister of Canada his was brought-up to be a gentleman in a genteel family where you owed everyone you met some kind of courtesy and respect. No one can escape his or her up-bringing or his or her genetics. Christopher Orme Plummer was the last of that breed.
A truly wonderful actor! Rest In Peace, Christopher Plummer (1929 - 2021).
I love hearing old people tell stories and reflect on life.
Nice old people, anyway.
He does look and sound like Ian McKellen.
no, he actually only does not sound and look american :D i wanted to say he only sounds english, but he is not english after all :)
Weedian He's Canadian... unless you already knew that.
Not at all, get your ears checked you imbecile.
The definition of class act.
Truly
I am quite impressed with the candor of Christopher Plummer. And very funny, too.
Christopher Plummer is "the most interesting man in the world."
Christopher Lee: hold my beer

Christopher Mintz-Plasse: Hold my fake ID
I like how he pretty much said Ian McKellen was a better Gandalf than he probably would. He seems to have been a very humble man, and I couldn't appreciate it more.
Haha, Christopher is a funny guy! I'm so glad he enjoys his life, especially at that age! What a blessing! :)
Christopher Plumber is definitely among my top ten actors of all time. True gentleman, yet warm and inviting. Not to mention a great actor.
Oh come on 2021, now you took this man?!?! 😟😲😢 This is so unexpected ... I know, Plummer reached a high age, but
it wasn't even a stroke or a heart failure or the bloody Covid virus - He just hurt his head badly in a fall. 😟 I admired him so much on- and off svreen, among many other aspects, for that remarkable physical and mental constitution, which allowed him to promote three fantastic movies in 2019/20. Well, at least this legend went out with a big hit (and I'm sure his real family handles his last will with much more dignity and gratefulness than his on-screen family in Knives Out). Rest in peace, Sir! And condolences from Germany to his loved ones. 🕊️👏🏻💛
RIP great sir you will be missed by millions we are lucky enough to have your work to watch over and over
RIP and long live Christopher Plummer (December 13, 1929 - February 5, 2021), aged 91
You will always be remembered as a legend.
Would have loved to have met that guy he's a hell of a nice guy.
Most honest guy in a world brava !!
A bit of a blooper there by Conan in the way he asked Plummer if he thought about retiring. Luckily, Plummer promptly cleared the mood.
Sean Connery supposedly turn the role down as well. I wonder how many were offered the role before they gave it to Ian McKellen
I heard Connery turned it down because he did not understand the script; in Plummer's case it seems to be a more conscious and intelligent decision.
So much for that...I think Plummer might actually have made a great Saruman, ot better still Radagast the Brown in the Hobbit movies.
@@christianealshut1123 Christopher' Plummer's style of acting is somewhere in between that of Ian and Christopher Lee's. He's not as grounded as Ian and yet not as stoic and highly as that of Lee's. But somehow i think he would've been a great LOTR character nonetheless, perhaps as Elendil, Ecthelion or perhaps Elros
Enchanting man. Gonna miss this legend
He really does look like a shoe-in for Gandalf. I honestly can't say who would have been better... probably about equal. Ian did an exceptional job imo I would love to have both versions to compare.
CP may be right perhaps he would have been less 'warm' in some scenes but at the same time I suspect he might have added a more 'wizardly' you know air of mystery to the Gandalf character.
I think of Ian being the less warm one lol …
Sean connery was also offered the role , I wonder who was offered it first but sir Ians iconic voice was right for the role
What I love about him is he doesn't mince words. When he talked about his experiences working with Terence Malick he described his problems with Terence and tore him a new one. While at the same time praising him for what he did well.
I love the work of Ian McKellen in LOTR, this is the first person I could see as being Gandalf aswell.
I could never see Sean Connery or Patrick Stewart as Gandalf, but yes, I think Christopher would have killed it as well. As he did everything. And he would have been plenty warm, while also being intimidating and mysterious, as Ian McKellen was.
I can see others especially older actors turning it down. All three movies were made at the same time. Just released one year at a time. That’s quite a commitment for an epic movie franchise.!
Rip Christopher Plummer, ur a legend. May you rest in peace
Plummer never looked like a frail old man. He maintained great vitality up until the end.
Wow he looks so much like gandalf it's insane and this was 15 years after he turned down the role. Gosh how time flies by...
Ian Mckellen is born for his role of Gandalf, but Cristopher Plummer is second best.
i thought he was british this whole time...HE'S CANADIAN!!!
These are the men of my youth, who were filled with class, knowledge, wordiness and a sense of style. It seems now men are more in the line of image and the character is plastic. I am amazed he has kept himself so well but he is beginning to show quick signs of aging in the past few years. Hope we have him for many more years.
One of his lesser recognised roles but my favourite of Christopher Plummer was The Duke of Wellington in Waterloo.
Long Live Legend!!!😍😍
R.I.P 💔💔
What a classy man, a true movie star.
he's so charismatic
i wasn't expecting him to be this chill and funny.
My type for Gandalf was Sean Connery, my ultimate childhood hero from all Bond movies I loved so much. And of course Indiana Jones's dad, the role that made him so much Gandalf-like.
Kids and teenagers out there, run for you dreams, do what you love in life. That’s what I believe to be the only path. Warning: There will be much more people telling you reasons not to (fear speaks louder than courage), but you should make a decision for yourself.
Extraordinario actor de una estirpe ya desaparecida. De porte elegante y educado, siempre será recordado como uno de los grandes actores de los últimos 50 años.
I always best known him as Charles Muntz from UP (2009)
Gandalf the drunk.
Paiman Hussain the best gandalf
Jacks Channel No he was Gandalf the High. He was always smoking on his pipe, smoking some good shit.
And Plummer has openly admitted to taking some roles to finance his drinking habit!
Actually, he knew how to drink. He was never seen drunk. He just drank.
I notice it’s nothing but the best actors that were offered to play Gandalf.
I feel like no matter who they went with those movies would have been great.
Thank you Sir Christoph, you are always impeccable. We should learn from your Grace. Blessings...
He could have been Gandalf's drunk brother....
The funny thing is that he drank a lot but never looked drunk, unlike O'Toole and Harris.
Maybe he didn't drunk so much, just enough... which is an art itself.
92 years old. Glorious life.
RIP buddy. You will be greatly missed.
I loved his voice as the Grand Duke owl in Rockadoodle doo.
To be fair, Sean Connery turned down the role also.
But he couldn't turn down your mother, Trebek!
That's because he's shelfish
Implantedclub he lives in the ocean?
29AndreG i love connery but thank god
Liz R
HAHAHA
Just heard 😔. So thankful for conan for interviewing him. Such a memorable and classic interview. I just showed this clip to my father literally not two days ago. And we talked about what an illustrious career he had and how if an actor truly loved what they did they never really were out of work. Saw him in knives out recently loved him in that.
I love him especially in the sound of music
As far as I know, he did not like this role very much though... He's very much playing the dashing young lover there, and he's SO much better when playing a good villain. It's actually he as General Chang, not R. Montalban as Khan who's my all-time favorite Star Trek villain. On one level his Chang is more enigmatic than Khan in a way; there is one level where you think he and Kirk are actually not so dissimilar and he's a little bit playing up to that And he really did a tour de force in The Royal Hunt of the Sun as Atahualpa - and he did not even get a nomination for that! And I simply LOVED him as Tolstoy in The Last Station!
He would have been a good bond too around the time that pansy roger Moore was chosen. Plummer has a tougher vibe than old rog who couldn't win a pillow fight
you know Plummer's voice does sound a lot like Ian
If I had to chill with one person 85+ for a day it'd be this guy... or Betty White.
Christopher Plummer as Aristotle in Alexander!
He should’ve been Albus Dumbledore.
RIP Captain 💐🖤
Thank you for that!
His amazing actor.

Well he was great as Arngeir in Skyrim.
R.I.P 😞
Legendary actor
You guys should check em out in The Fall of the Roman Empire. He was amazing in that movie.
hey its the guy who narrated the madeline show
Christopher Plummer s voice sounds similar to Satyajit Rays voice
What a beautiful man in every possibly way!
In his 80s and he's still got it
Wow both he an Ian are good choices. I agree what Christopher said about Ian's warmth in character.
Christopher got to voice the character Arngeir, the master greybeard of Skyrim. He would've been an interesting Gandalf.
Christopher Plummer seems like a great guy. I bet he would've been a good Gandalf. He'll always be a great villain in my mind as The Grand Duke of Owls! Lol.
Where is all my Rock a Doodle fans at?! 😁
Are*
I've come back to this video for 2 years just to watch him say, "I hate the son of a bitch". Hahah
His daughter Amanda Plummer is a terrific actress as well 💚
now I'm wondering how his performance would've been...
He is gorgeous ❤️❤️❤️
Rest in peace
“I hate the son of a bitch” 😂😂❤️❤️
I wonder how he would've looked like as Gandalf, a bit more of a serious face than Ian, I can imagine Ian being the more warm and friendly gandalf but this seems like he just said cold and wise I would say he would make great for a more serious gandalf.
RIP Christopher Plummer (1929 -2021).
aaahhhh a kindred spirit
What a class act
I hate the son of ***** LOL 😆😆😆 I love him very much!!!!!
He nailed the British accent in Nuremberg. This man is a bloody amazing actor.
English*
His voice got much deeper in his old age.
Just found out he plays Argneir from skyrim
Goodbye to this acting legend and the true gem of cinema
RIP to a legend. Big sad day
Well done sir! Last he needed was condolences by hordes of nerds saying R.I.P. Gandalf now when he has passed away. He got his Oscar, recognition both as an actor and as a man, and was a total pro throughout his acting career.
good Canadian son
His best line in Skyrim is "Ah, we have decided this violation of your butt!"
Conan!!
Is it me or does he look like a white Morgan Freeman?
They're both on my list of grandfathers I would have loved to grow up with.
Well, that's one of the coolest 85yos I've seen. However much he's drank in life, it hasn't dulled his wit.
