10 years ago when ESPN NFL 2k5 came out, it destroyed Madden 2005 in sales. Why? Because Madden was stale, ESPN was fresh and fun, and was only $20 on release. As a result, EA and the NFL agreed to terms on a licensing agreement that would only allow EA to make football games. Now each and every year, we have only Madden with little gameplay improvements, making many fans mad. I put them head to head here.

NFL 2k5 was easily the greatest Football game ever made Why you think Madden bought out the NFL gaming license cause they knew they wouldn't compete with 2k. The same way Nba 2k is killing live is the same way Nfl 2k would do Madden if it was still around.

Yea i agree on that MVP Baseball 2005 was one of my favorite sports games. 2K was TERRIBLE making Baseball games but they don't need to be when they have the NBA market conquered. I have Playstation 4 so i have MLB the show and it's still a very solid Baseball game but yea MVP baseball was great but i don't think it will ever return.
Why is the view in the new Madden on here, look like a field view, there is no ariel or overhead view like in NFL 2k5 and Madden 2005. These new Maddens are pretty bad. I would not buy a madden game after the year 2005.

madden is the biggest disgrace in the video game history. And is a complete embarrassment to the NFL. The mechanics are horrible. I mean they re using the same tackling animations from 2008. Plus dont get me started on the running animations. All the players look the same, at times you cant tell difference between a punter and a linebacker. The worst part about is that Madden 16 is the same garbage that madden 15 is.

Mutant League Football did that as well! I always loved seeing highlights from other games around the league. It's amazing to me that modern Madden games still haven't implemented that. It could be related to loading in the teams/players though since everyone is so detailed now.. who knows.

10 Reason why madden sucks in my OPINION
1. Where are the pass interference !?
2. Where are the late hits?
3. How come people can user switch to anyone and run faster than player on the field and guard damn near anyone on the field and the player not get tired..
4. Warp/Suction tackles
5. Players can't slow theirselves down from running out of bounds on swing routes
6. Offensive lineman can catch corners who pick the ball...?
7. Tired of a ball being caught or picked when your player has two hands on the ball and the opponent had one.
8. Onside kicks are magnetized .. They don't even catch it!!! Its just glued to their boy
9. (Not gameplay wise) but where are the new cleats, gloves, one armed sleeves, knee braces, mouthpieces?? The stuff we see players wear every weak in real life.. Like NBA 2K has every players face, damn near every shoe, arm band wrist band, tattoos and madden can't upgrade the vapors or even create Cam Newtons personal cleats .. LAZY
10. The tackling system is garbage truck juice. Like be real with yourself 7/10 of the tackles are hit sticks. A small corner shouldn't be able to a big running back like Eddie Lacy on his ass in a one on one situation, like add ankle tackles, shoe string tackles . Every hit shouldn't be Ray Lewis esque. Fix it to wear hard hitters are only to use hit stick, everyone else just does normal tackles and OCCASIONALLY can hit stick.
I've bought every madden since 2001. So I've always been a fan. But it's getting so lazy with fixing things it's crazy. How are you going to add MUT and other game modes when you can't even fix the modes you have already? Come on EA. And if anyone disagrees with anything on my list let me know, this is just my opinion of a game and company being lazy with simple progression.

Madden has 3 things to fix.
1. Packs for MUT are too expensive
2. Corners drop every interception. They REALLY need to make it realistic. It's so fucking annoying.
3. If Calvin Johnson or Dez Bryant actually made an attempt to go up for the ball they would actually be effective. Other than the name receivers are basically the same.

Exactly. Little shit that Madden keeps getting rid of. I was a huge fan of Madden 07 for the GameCube mainly for its Superstar mode. You had your own apartment and agent and everything, and it actually felt kinda real. Nowadays it just feels like you're stuck playing as one player in a normal game. MyPlayer in 2K basketball and baseball games is far superior to Superstar as of late.

NFL 2K5 kicks Madden 15s ass in every aspect of the game. Its sad that its almost 2015 and Madden still doesn't have good tackling physics, half time shows, or pre game intros while a game made in 2004 had better animations and all. Never gets improvements and we just pay 60 bucks for a roster update

A. Never played it/played it long enough to judge
B. Only judged the game on graphics, and not gameplay
C. Were not alive/too young to be able to experience the game itself.
D. Can't face the facts that there was a football game that gave madden a run for its money until EA took a risk and bought the NFL off so 2K couldn't produce anymore.
I got 2k4 as a pack with my x box. The next year u was content on spending 50 on it and was more stoked I only spent 20. Rumor has it you can update the rosters for 2k5 on x box somehow
It's just preference. Like I liked 2k due to the mechanics, play calling, well the game was just a beast. Madden was a fast paced run and gun . It's all about the big play and and exploiting the fullback draw.

Madden 16 is a joke dude. So many ridiculous catches, one handed catches on practically every drive, and still all the dropped picks. Oh, but for "realism" they made there be offensive holding calls on every other damn play, but never pass interference. It's a fun distraction, but any authenticity went out the window.

You say 2k5 has a better intro which I think is pretty true. Then you say no one ever watches the intro on Madden 15 so you don't know why they put in there? You could say the same thing about 2k5. You don't even compare them you just favor one. This was just a very bad video and very biased.
It isn't biased, when you think about it Madden hasn't improved much other than graphics, and roster updates. Plus admit it not everyone watches that same presentation. Also NFL2K was the only rival to Madden before EA bought the license, and NFL2K5 was selling for $20 on release and it sold more than Madden 05. Also you have not played the game so don't act like Madden is the best game ever when it has done nothing to improve itself over the years.

The Xbox version actually showed the clips from halftime on NFL 2K5. Also the challenge system has been broken for years on Madden. 2K5's challenge system works and you can actually choose what you want to challenge. In Madden you just challenge the last thing that happens in the play and half of the time that's not what you want to challenge. Plus during a franchise regular season game the ticker will show scores from games that were actually going on in your franchise...so if you're playing a 1 o'clock game you can see the score updates on the bottom of the screen from the other 1 o'clock games. I LOVE THAT. How does Madden not have that ticker or a functioning challenge system?

I dont play Madden anymore but still play NCAA and this is the exact same physics that we have here. I always noticed that in older Football games the A.I was just overall much better.
It's fun to think about what an NFL 2K17 game would look like. So here's my plan:Regular game mode - pretty self explanatory My career mode - also pretty explanatory, but maybe make it like NBA 2K17 and have high school and college game modes except make it better than NBA (I.e. without the stupid Spike Lee nickname shit). Also maybe have a first person option as wellMy park - Do An NFL Street hybrid with MyPark type of thing where People play their position in 7 on 7s online against each other for rep, and people would be able to buy their own special outfits and special street moves.Comment for additional ideas about this and like so people can see.

2k5 is still better.. Now can some one talk about challenges.. 2k5 asks if you are challenging the ball spot or catch, or fumble. Madden only challenges catches.. I stop a player short of the first down and it said the ruling as a catch stands. Madden is a failure compared to that 10 year old game.. Not even pass interference calls, only holding and won't identify the player.. 2k5 tells you who made the penalty.. 2k5 wins..

To play madden you don't need to know how to play to be somewhat good. In 2k you had to know football because you couldn't make a play over and over again as you can in madden.
That is pretty funny. I havent played a football game since madden 07 but you are completely incorrect as is this hatin video. I never was a madden fan or nfl2k fan, ncaa football was leagues better than both. However this dude is complaining about screens on madden when he isn't even running the screens right. FFS on screens you dont speed burst, you run out and then juke and maneuver behind your linemen and get the defensive players to engage with your blockers, that is how it is in real life. Blockers just dont go out and block and hold on to them. As a back who catches a screen you have to wait behind your linemen for them to land the blocks then you accelerate into the open field. I could go for days on how bad nfl2k was with its tackling, that is video doesn't expose. Most sports games suck anyways, its way more fun to go out and play the game yourself.

Just for the record, how many of you Madden fans are hardcore basketball fans that also knew who the cover athlete was on NBA Live 2016? I guarantee it's none of you (the athlete is Russell Westbrook.) For a game made in 2004, the graphics, playability, controls, and physics are ahead of their time. The fact that Madden still can't compete with this game, the fact that it's still a benchmark, is atrocious. If the NFL wanted to do its fans a service, they'd release their exclusivity agreement with EA because the only good EA Sports games now are the FIFA games.
If 2K is smart, they'll pick up the NCAA licensing agreement, make college games for a few years to show what they can do again, and reclaim their spots on the top of the throne. That's just my take.

I honestly don't get why people always hate on Madden for not having the "little things". madden clearly focuses on creating the most advanced and realistic football GAMEPLAY experience for the user. They clearly have been constantly improving gameplay. For instance this year they've added a few new controls with the big ones being the air supremacy package which gives the player more control of the passing game. Madden has also made considerable improvements to the franchise modes while adding modes such as Ultimate Team and Draft Champions.
you sound like you work for EA lol. Madden has made great strides though. EA needs to concentrate on physics and animations. players still seem to plastic and things seem robotic. also it needs more fun modes like the crib or 1st person. not everything needs to be serious. games are meant to be FUN.

Gotta say, in terms of movement and physics of the players, 2K5 is still the football king. 11 years later. Obviously the character models, lighting and ball physics have improved drastically, but Madden still feels like the players are skating on ice.

Compare NBA 2K with NBA Live. No comparison. 2K blows EA out of the water there. Now imagine 2K with football? First and foremost, there is no competition or urgency for EA to improve Madden because they're the only ones making football games. They fool the consumer by taking baby steps improvements and in release making it a big deal with "Oh, look what we improved here!" They're just money hungry and the consumer falls for their bullshit. Mechanics are third-rate, unrealistic, just like NBA Live. The thing about 2K, they don't need to license the NBA and lock out EA, because they're confident enough that everyone buys 2K. EA is just insecure about their game that they have to buy out the NFL to lock 2K out. Ridiculous.
2k5 was honestly the best game that i have ever played in my life. It was actually a realistic madden. You wouldn't be able to moss people everytime u threw the ball up. Nowadays it's just u can throw it up and they catch the ball every time

I know I'm late with this....but I just discovered this video today. And I wanted to chime in on the halftime report. You said 2k5 had only still images and no videos, I seem to recall that there was video replays during the halftime report. Specifically on the xbox, since that was the only console I owned. I recall me and my girlfriend at the time would love it when Chris Burman would say "He...could...go...all...the...way...TOUCHDOWN!" while watching the video of a runner going into the inzone.
Anyways, I just wanted to correct that. Because Madden definitely didn't create the live video halftime reports. lol.
Every single person talking shit about Madden and saying 2k was better STILL plays Madden.
Funny thing is there's a lot of people who still play 2k5 and make, up to date rosters. There are people who don't even buy madden and there are people who buy madden because they love football too much to go without it. There are very few people who think madden is a good representation of football however and you need to realize this.

Madden is a good game and the online servers are always great no one is denying that However, NFL 2K5 for its time was perfection and not many sport games have reached the level of perfection. Especially for being a game over 10 years old. You could match it up with Madden 16 today and it's still a close comparison despite 2K being a game from 2 generations ago. That's amazing.
Wow this is eye opening. I played 2k5 when it first came out but I was in 6th grade at the time and never realized how ahead of its time it was. What really stands out to me are the physics of the game. Just watching this video you can feel the weight and momentum of each player. Same with NBA 2k, you can really feel the game. Madden on the other hand feels very light and too quick. Animations are terrible in Madden. EA should be banned from making video games. We have TV's that talk to us. We have phones that guide us in everyday life and we have cars that can park and drive themselves. EA sports needs to get with the program. This is not 1989. No excuse for why Tecmo Superbowl is a better game than madden 16

Madden pissed me off when they stole the creative side of the game. You should be able to create your own playbooks..... and sign anybody to position that will fit your scheme. They Have Crabtree for the Raiders catching.... 84....but Antonio Brown 96!! Game is garbage..... Crabtree hasn't dropped a ball since last season.... first three games of the season now and through preseason. Brown dropped plenty of balls even one wide open. Crabtree speed shouldn't be 88....more of 92 or 93. I hate how they make rookies awareness bad when clearly the Raiders 2 defensive end rookies blow up plays when they get it. I was playing a game Vs the Chiefs last night and Maclin flash teleported 5 yards to the back of the end zone pass my defender to catch it. The next drive he caught a one hander on the ground....back of the end zone between Sherman and my rookie corner back. Sherman got to the spot the ball was thrown before them..... just stood there frozen with no reaction. My rookie corner dove at Maclin legs. Everybody knows Sherman would of hit his ass hard or pic that off. I put Sherman as Safety with Kam cause they gave him a 89 speed which he should be faster. Thomas was put at corner due to the notch faster of speed. He dropped 2 interceptions. Last of all is one on one match ups suck in Madden this year. They catch better around 4 people than one which in reality should be the other way around. Another thing is steroid speed in straight down the field bombs.... Your receiver speed could be 94 and the corner can be 89....he be right next to him full speed.... Fake.. mainly with no top help. I put a corner against Dez and some how without a bump he left my corner. His speed was 88 and my corner 92!!!! My brother said it's a glitch play. So basically a cheat code play they rigged in the game. Fake as ever.......
It's sad that EA destroyed a company that actually cared about its customer. What does Madden give you every year yet you still buy it? A roster update & better graphics. Smh. It's seems like they've adapted the same business model Apple has. The "Let's remove the headphone jack & call it "new" kind of thinking where selling you less, or keeping you content, is enough to keep you entertained.

One time I was playing madden 16 and I made a 400 pound 7 foot giant and put him at HB and then I made a 100 pound 5 foot munchkin and put him at LB so when the giant ran the ball to the left side the munchkin was able to take him down with no sweat. That's one of the reasons I'm not so happy with EA sports.

Ok now I'm not that big of a Madden fan but how is this a comparison. You clearly favor ESPN 2K5. And if you watch actual watch Gridiron Football some passes can't be caught and are dropped. All of 2K5 tackles all look the same with the carrier lunging forward and getting tackled by the legs. And defenders can't catch every throw man. I have only played 2K5, Madden 16, and Madden 14 or 25
My favorite madden was 07 because in career mode there was so much extra shit like before you were drafted you worked out with teams, had to take a test and then get drafted. Your stats reflected how well u did in that
It was NFL2K5’s $20 price tag that killed the series. When 2k5 came out at a low price and sold gangbusters compared to madden 2005, the NFL were pissed because they thought that putting the NFL brand on a so-called “budget” game would cheapen the brand.
After 6 seasons, and 5 Superbowls, I deleted all my files and retired from Madden. Dude, please do one on Madden 16. Also, compare All-Madden to Legend. Show how the CPU has hidden speeds in dire situations, (like, when the team speedster is nearing open field) Compare the plentiful big play-recalling penalties. And have a field day with pass defense this year WRs sure-handedness vs your butter fingers. Simply create an all star man coverage secondary, and man up while sending 6 rushers, on every play from the nickel. Replace SS/FS with lockdown corners. Take down every DB's zone coverage, since you'll be in man all game, it shouldn't matter. This will show you that ratings still don't matter how they should. Despite your DB's doing what they do best, the simple fact that their overall is lower, will put them at a devastating disadvantage against any receiver at certain points of the game, more so when you try to allow the DB to try and defend the pass, himself. I guarantee no matter how lesser the opposing WR corps is, 9/10 times, there's gonna be "the drive" at least once, in every game. You'll know the drive when you see it. QB will suddenly have all the time in the world against a 6 man rush, and though your DBs will stay with the WRs initially. the QB will break a sack or two (and sometimes 3) to toss up a duck downfield where one WRs, no matter the rating, will find it. (Don't click on the DB) and watch as they advance the ball, for at least a field goal. And all game, watch even rookie QBs pass for about 80%. With tight coverage and no time to through the ball, he'll still make too-smart-for-a-rookie-or-any-QB-for-that-matter passes. I'm sorry. But I'm extremely irritated by EA.

Never played NFL 2k5, but it seems like a pretty cool step for sports games that was never capitalized on... I think the same with Madden 06 thout, like how you could create your own stadium in Franchise mode, and you had a bit of a story in Superstar mode that was just never capitalized on.

You have obviously never played football before because you don't realize that what you call "receivers not even trying to break up a pick" is actually the receiver's momentum causing them to not be able to stop and get back to the ball. Madden is of course not without its faults but you need to give it at least some credit and stop being biased in a comparison video.
This isn't a fair comparison. You clearly favor 2k5. I'll say the bad things you missed on the 2k5 ones. I am not saying m15 is better or 2k5 sucks or anything like that.
The intro: You talked up how awesome the 2k one, but with m15 you were like, "People skip the intro anyway" and "Pretty much all the basis stuff" which you can say about either one.
Kick returns: Generally, returns are just normal looking, even in Madden. There are some weird things on occasions though. At 3:21 the tackler awkwardly gets locked a block.
Run 1: The pulling guard didn't go for the guy that shed his block, when he should have. He just awkwardly slowed down and turned to the side.
Run 2: The tackler lunged for his facemask, or at least that's what it looked like.
Run 3: He bumps into the lineman but he is just pushed to the side. In madden the guy will sidestep or trip.
Run 4: You cannot say it didn't look awkward.
Run 5: Looks a little awkward as well.
Run 6: There was a guy in position to tackle him, but just gets pushed to the side by the blocker. You can see him kinda glide to the blocker.
Pass 1: The corner whiffed on the deflection when he should have gotten it. He seems to slow down before it, like the pass was meant to be completed. If you look at the receiver at the start of the play, the corner just awkwardly stands in his way, no press or anything. That coverage (man) was also horrible.
Pass 2: Number 24 dives at the other players ankles for some reason. And it doesn't trip up the other player, who ended up being part of the tackle.
Pass 3: It looks like his arm hit the lineman on the throw, but it didn't affect it.
Pass 4: Number 41 just runs down the field for no reason. He wasn't biting on a fake or anything, and he does it right when the ball is thrown.

On the next one. The awkward tackling fall animation..that's cuz no one jukes into two players.
Pick 1: There was no planting feet or anything after the pick, he just accelerates immediately. He might have even bumped the blocker a bit. At the end you can see the linebacker kinda slow down as if he was already getting tackled before the guy grabs onto him.
Pick 2: The missed tackle on that was pretty crazy.
On the madden ones, the first is pretty normal, he was in zone and in front of the receiver, so that's an easy pick. The next was a deflection. That happens IRL when guys can't get both hands on the ball. Sometimes it happens when they can, but they just deflect for the safe play. The third one, the receiver can't get back to the ball (momentum).
Incompletion 1: The DB turns towards the ball but instead of making a play on it, he just hits the receiver.
Other two: If you complained about the madden tip, why not those.
"More players hitting each other" neither one saw each other, they just had their eyes on the ball. That happens IRL.
Dropped picks happen IRL.
In ESPN NFL 2K5, I use classic NFL fight songs from the 40s-60s (usually by marching bands) (as well as the old Oilers songs, The Autumn Wind and the Ravens fight song) as stadium music via custom soundtrack on the original Xbox.
Had every single copy of 2K Football and Basketball on my dreamcast. Those were the days. The best sports games hands down. Madden is still great, or was. But NFL 2K will always have that 'what if' mystique. Could have gone on to do bigger and greater things had EA not got the license.
Correction - The XBox version was the more fleshed out version because of XBoxs' power. The PS2 version was half assed because the PS2 was always the weaker console. On XBox, you can edit and play your own music that you saved on it's built in hard drive and assign a song for every situation that happens in football. On the field, off the field and also television broadcast. It has SportsCenter FULL VIDEO highlights durring halftime and Franchise mode. Whats cool about that is, after every week, you can watch and listen Chris Berman show and tell us what happened in other games from around the league that you never played. He does his signature sound effects and all. It'll show highlights of those games like as if you're watching an episode of SportsCenter. Intro and all. "This is Sports Center". Still to this day, the shit is amazing. Never the same highlights either. Basically, the XBox version is the superior version of ESPN NFL 2K5. Bottom line, it's such a better game than the whole Madden series. If you still have an XBox or an XBox 360, BUY THIS GAME NOW! Best of all, it's BC (Backwards Compatible) on the XBox 360. I still play my 2K5 on my XBox and XBox 360. I play Fantasy Franchise to keep the game fresh. I'm the best advocate of this game. Listen to this man. This is very biased I understand somethings are better in 2k5 regardless of 10 year gap but its not like you're being fair at all towards madden, its really not horrible in every aspect the way your making it.
ESPN 2K5 is so much better because of the gameplay, EA & Madden should be ashamed of themselves. 2K5 allows you create 47 players. That added to the fact you can change the name & looks of a few dozen current players on the 2k5 game pretty much makes me not even have wanted to play any of the Maddens for the past 10 years because only AROUND 100 players in the NFL these days make an impact & really matter anyway when you really think about it. I've played several Maddens in the past 10 years and it really does seem like the same game, just with roster updates and little to no cohesiveness. Madden '13 wouldn't even let you do a normal season, it pretty much gave you no options unless you paid for XBox Live. No urgency on Madden's part to get better. 2k5 was just simple enough for anyone to pick up, learn quickly, & get adjusted. It's maddening!!!

The PS2 version had photos for the halftime show. The XBox version had video and was overall MUCH smoother. To be honest, the PS2 version was incredibly broken, and this is coming from someone who prefers Sony.
