Oooh if you liked this, you gotta check out "Hot Buttered Soul" by Chef from South Park (or Isaac Hayes as he is lesser known.) Walk On By from that album sounds like what I'd imagine walking through the gates of heaven would sound like, and it somehow also sounds like Isaac Hayes' sweaty head on the album cover
While the Rolling Stone’s 500 Greatest Albums list has lots of issues, “What’s Going On” being the number one album was a perfect choice for the top spot and I completely agree with it. As much as I love myself some Led Zeppelin, David Bowie and other rock of the time, 70’s soul music was on another level. Stevie Wonder released 5 or 6 PERFECT albums throughout the decade that could have easily been on top of the list as well. It’s just too difficult to pick which one of them is the best. That being said, I recommend reacting to some classic Stevie Wonder. Try “Songs In The Key Of Life”, “Innervissions” or “Fullingness Fist Finale”
This record is pure VIBES. But then you look under the vibes and you find another world of impact, lyrical content, and culture. Not even mad at the boomers at RS for putting this at no. 1
LOVE YOUR VIDEOS MY GUY a few recommendations: Process - Sampha (experimental r&b, great production) Nurture - Porter Robinson (light summer electric with fun production) Koi No Yokan - Deftones (very heavy, sexier and heavier radiohead imo) Hypochondriac - Brakence (very experimental emo rap, glitch pop) Reading Writing And Arithmetic - The Sundays (the smiths ish, with beautiful female vocals)
Very important album with an interesting background. Marvin wanted to break free from the happy hit singles form hit factory Motown and in this new decennium make something with more depth he created himself. So he made track no.1, the single What's going on. Motown boss and brother in law Berry Gordy hated it, because it was nothing like Motown. Till he saw it's succes... Then he asked Marvin to make an album like this. Marvin locked himself in the studio with nothing (but the first track) and came out with an album. It's recorded in the record order from A to Z. The first conceptual R&B record. Imo he's a studio genius. The vocal layering is so well done and (with this and coming albums like I want you) very influential for an artist like Michael Jackson. There are some very interesting short clips about the current Motown boss Harry Weigner and Roots drummer Questlove analyzing the multitrack in studio. Btw, every 70's album of his and Stevie Wonder is pure gold.

Hello smags! long time no see im here to provide some recommendations! Id beg on my knees for: Can - Future Days desert sand feels warm at night - 新世界の弟子たち loving the good content as always, take care ❤
I love this record so much! I've had teary eyes every time I listened to it, especially on Save The Children. You should totally listen to Scott 3 by Scott Walker for more baroque pop with lushy strings and overall amazing orquestation with an amazing voice leading everything.
Pulp Fiction and Jackie Brown soundtracks are great compilations from this era of music. 😅 I LOVE MoTown/Soul but… I can’t think of one complete album that I’m in love with start to finish.
One of my favorite Marvin Gaye songs is What's Going on. I thought you may have heard it before. A suggestion: Marvin's cover of the Beatles "Yesterday". If you like Marvin's voice and like the Beatles, especially Yesterday, I think you will really like his cover.
Glad you touched on the emotional connection aspect as a younger person listening back to older albums. For this albums in particular, some of the “of the time” elements like the call-and-response vocals and the orchestral movements don’t always land for me…I just don’t have that personal connection to that era. That being said, it’s still so easy to see why this is regarded so highly. It’s such a cohesive and focused album with great cultural underpinning.
Been thinking about how I'd like to see Smags react to more great black music and just like that, "What's Going On" hits my notifications. This man's winning streak has to be studied. Would love to see some more reactions to some great classic artists like Stevie Wonder, Sade, Aretha Franklin, and Prince (good luck with the copyright tho) to name a few! and if you ever do go bald you have to rename your channel baldthony smagtano
Smags, my guy, I MUST recommend an album to you I’ve found recently. “The Texas Jerusalem Crossroads” by Lift To Experience. It’s a post rock/shoegaze album. The first song might be weird at first, and the last song is 30 minutes long, most of which is silence (the first 10 minutes and the last 5 minutes have music, the rest is silent) Check it out bro!
12:28 people have been trying to warn about this stuff for a long time, and all the rest of the world has done is double and triple down on it, with token concessions. There's a tension between war, the environment, and social issues being worth the most attention, and resignation to how intractable and entrenched those issues are. So what can we do in 2024 besides repeatedly ask, "what's going on"...
Uboa Just relesed a fucking banger of an album called Impossible Light, you should really listen to that and "The Origin Of My Depression". Really noisy and heavy stuff
immediate click
You gotta check out songs in the key if Life by Stevie Wonder. My favourite album of all time.

I agree it's the funkiest shit ever and it blends so well with everything.

We need a reaction do D'Angelo's Voodoo. I would personally put it up there with What's Going On when it comes to greatest RnB albums!

This album is the reason I picked up a bass, James Jamerson was a powerhouse
