Guys I’m 67. When this LP came out, everyone I knew had it. And we’re all white! ‘What’s going on’ was like a bomb going off. Motown was such a force for bringing this music to the masses it can’t be understated. It’s hard to understand it today all these years later but I lived it. It opened our eyes. ‘Mercy mercy me’ is one of those songs that once he starts singing you get transported to another time.

Mercy Mercy Me. Such in iconic song. Was released in 1971. Think how much changed or deteriorated in 50 plus years. The Funk Brothers were will versed in jazz being former jazz musicians. What a funky beatJames Jameson and Bob Babbitt on bass Eddie Bongo Brown on the bongos Wild Bill Moore on the sax. Excellent reaction fellas! You are much appreciated 🙏 ❤

Marvin was special. There are just no two ways about it. He was a beautiful man inward and outward and cared about humanity and the world. He matched his talent with his compassion and that made him a truly relevant artist. It was a sad day when he was taken from us.

James Jamerson on Bass! JPJ's # 1 influence! The bass line on "Ramble On" is SPOT on Motown! Such a great record, used to always listen to it on cold dark days when I lived in Detroit..

Marvin changed me with this album! Going on 13 when the singles got a lot of radio air. Remember listening to the whole album (that’s what we did at that time) and it blew my young teenage mind. I played a lot of basketball so had diverse friends, but Marvin’s humanity and the sweetness and love of his lyrics and music and his heart helped shape a much, more compassionate soul within myself. Marvin was truly amazing on so many levels.

I grew up in the Detroit suburbs, born in ‘61. These songs were the very beginnings of my music addiction, along with The Beatles, Stones, etc..
Yeah, BerryGordy didnt want to rock the Motown bout by putting out a •protest album”. But Marvin threatened to leave the label of he wasnt granted complete autonomy to make this record.

A beautifully haunting album by Marvin packed with social awareness. It is just as relevant today as it was back then. There is a great live performance of him in a formal suit playing the piano to an audience of students. The songs blend so perfectly together.🎶 One of my favorite albums of all times. Thanks guys for this reaction to this sweet, brilliant artist. RIP Marvin❤

For me, coming from one who's a fan of soul music, Marvin is what I imagine what God would sound like if he could sing. Listen to the 1982 recording of Marvin walking into a Belgian church in 1982 to sing the Lord's Prayer and you'll be mind blown. There was no one like Marvin, pure and simple.

I grew up listening to Tamla Motown, all those love songs of the sixties, then the Temptations released Ball of Confusion, Edwin Starr with War. The times had changed, Marvin releasing What's Going On was a pure mind bender. Marvin had always been one of my favourite Motown artists but, this album blew my mind. This is still one of my top five albums of all time along with Black Sabbath, Led Zepplin and Pink Floyd.

I remember when "What's Going On" came on the scene. I always love the songs that hit the radio. Sometime in the 90's I finally got around to purchasing the CD from Columbia House. Now it's a whole new ballgame. I don't know how it's possible for beauty and pain to coexist in the same space, but this compilation proves it's possible. I've come to realize it's a metaphor for life on this side of heaven. I call it the "ouch and amen" factor.

So many different levels of genius. People often point to Pink Floyd for their transition heavy concept albums. It should be noted that this album came out two years before "Dark Side of the Moon" which seemed to copy Marvin's style of seamless transitions from one song to the other with this album. So influential, lyrically technically and musically.
