James Jamerson, the bass player was drunk out of his mind when he cut the bassline on this track. He was laying flat out on the studio floor when he played it. Just focus on the bass line. It's perfectly crafted. More Motown boys, you can't go wrong with it.

Berry Gordy (the head of Motown) did NOT want Marvin Gaye to do this song AT ALL!! He thought it was too political and would harm the label and Marvin's brand, but Marvin Gaye didn't care and was Motown's biggest artist at the time and had something to say. Thirteen years later Marvin would be shot to death by his dad, a pastor. This song is not only my favorite from Marvin, but one of my all-time favorite songs.

I'm looking forward to A&A's reaction to this song. It was released on May 21st, 1971, and Marvin Gaye's message was a cry to society, a heartfelt protest to raise the consciousness of all people about the civil unrest, the Vietnam War, and racism. His message is so relevant today. It makes me cry when I think of when his own Father shot him to death on the eve of his 40th birthday. I'm certain that if Marvin is looking down from Heaven at us, he'd be very disappointed. His music is a testimony to his convictions, and will forever be linked to that infamous era.

Well said Lisa! When I think of Marvin I think about what a pure soul he was. All of his musical peers loved him as well. I love watching the TAMI Show for many reasons, but I always think of Marvin and how gracious he was. At the end of Lesley Gore’s set, the first half of the the show’s acts came out and were all behind Lesley. Some artists were giving each other the side eye or even what appeared to be smirking before the camera cut out. But Marvin was back there dancing like crazy and singing along with Lesley, almost cheering her on. Such exuberance! That scene always stays with me. I was very impressed by him from then on. Seriously he was a pure soul. America’s “pride and joy”.
