*Correction: the filter purges once every 12 hours, not once every hour as mentioned. Thomas had a long day of shooting videos, and was a bit delirious.

I started dying when Thomas said "stop arrêt" 😂😂
I got one and it’s running now for over 1 year now in my 75g goldfish tank and I maybe cleaned the motor for maybe 4-5 times. It’s super quiet and very easy to clean. Never change yet any sponges that comes with it except the fine and coarse filter pads.
Please make a video for the clean of the FX4 Motor ..thans Big Als
Thanks for the review, what size are the hoses if we wanna buy the other kind?
Had this pump for 6 months now and love it. Makes life so much easier to fill and drain for water changes. just connect hose to new water barrel and open the valves. Flow is ace. On setup I hated the tube/hose. What a pain. I made a spray bar and had to mess with plumbing parts to connect it. Never had problems with Eheim hose. Fluvel, SORT YOUR HOSE OUT
i keep a 550 gph filter on a 40 gallon. But felt upgrading was necessary for my cichlid grow out tank. I love the high filtration. No issues and the fish like it. I also have a power head and airstone. Fish tank needs maintence every 6 months. i just upgraded to a fx4 as I know at 550 gph an upgrade to the fx4 will be just right. I know I will soon move and just move the fx4 onto my 80 gal and put my 550gph hang on back on my 40 gallon for my guppies.
How do I use the ribbed hosing to connect my AquaStep UV filter? Do I have to order the white connector??? Any help appreciated.
Hey Travis, can the dual output from the FX4 work on a 406? I hate the ribbed hose and so its getting changed out but I was going to do a bar but I really like and think the dual changeable direction output will work very well for my setup....help good sir!?
Can you make a video about how to setup a sump
i like the channel 😁 respects from Venezuela
I have a Fx4 I want to put on my 20 long how can I get flow to not be so strong a spray bar or dial down flow but will it hurt pump doing that
what is the moveable outlet
macro ?
I definitely have to agree with you on the ribbed hosing... Fluval also equips ALL their canister filters with this less desirable tubbing and honestly, I don't trust it! If you look very close at the tubing ( ...or hosing - whatever you wish to call it!) has a seam... Seams have traditionally been known to leak... Especially with rigid materials - like that of the tubing or hose... what ever you wish to call it!... I also don't like the rubber push on sleeves it comes with that are non removable or even rotatable (...at least!...sheesh!!) And if you so happen to accidentally cut the stocked hose too short, well, Say good bye to 10% of the cost of the filter...Or should I say at least 15% as now you have to buy a new ribbed hose... Or maybe not! Regardless of the replacement hose you purchase, it will end up costing you more for a replacement + what the built up cost of the canister filer was in the fist place. (hose cost)
None the less, the hoses in the Fluval line of canister filters should be exempt and be left up to the owner of the filter to buy the type he or she finds suitable.
Disclaimer: PLEASE do NOT discredit the capability of the hose (or tubing) the filter came with..It does work but if it was my choice, I would not use it personally.
What ever happened to the fluval G3 and G6 ?
What is the diameter of the FX4 canister?
Where to start. This is a good canister filter, however, the marketing is a bit misleading.
1. There are only 3 stages of filtration: Mechanical, biological, and chemical. They break out the filtration into 5 sections. With that said, a lot of aquarists don’t use carbon. I threw my carbon pad away. Marketing = 5 sounds more impressive than 3.
2. The actual compartments that house the bio-media are very small. This means that you aren't going to get a lot of bio-media in this canister filter. The same problem with the FX6. Secondly, the bio-media that is supplied with this filter are ceramic rings, which are ok, but, by no means great. There definitely isn’t enough bio-media to filter a moderately to heavily stocked 250 gallon that it says its rated for. Some would argue that the copious amounts of sponges will house beneficial bacteria, and that is true. Good bio-media has more surface area than sponge however and would hold more.
3. The output of the FX4 is NOT 700gph. Filter makers commonly rate the output of their product based on an empty filter (without media) running with no head height. In other words the output of the filter is measured right at the empty canister filter output, without a hose attached. If one were to fill the filter with sponges, filter pads, and bio-media and then attach a hose to the output and pump it up 4 feet up into a tank, that 700 GPH quickly gets CUT IN HALF. 350 gph would be a more realistic approximate rating. Again, marketing. Be careful how the product is rated. Note: The manual rates this truer output as "filter circulation" at 450gph. It goes on to state that the filter is empty and the input and output hoses are of the same length, but, do not specify what that length is.
4. Not sure where there is the idea that there are 5 baskets. There are 2 primary white baskets with 2 red baskets that fit inside the white baskets and do little more than take up space. I discarded the red baskets as they are useless. Again, marketing. when looking at other canister filters, other manufacturers have additional baskets that actually do hold more media. Sadly, the FX4 has 2 primary baskets and the compartment that holds the bio-media is small.
In conclusion, IMHO, the FX4 is a hyped-up sponge filter with a true flow rate of somewhere around 350-400gph. Its construction is first rate. I’d like to see them reduce the volume of sponges and increase the bio-media compartments. Id also like for them to get rid of the red baskets, and, replace the hosing with flexible, non-ribbed vinyl hose. The input basket is also a bit cumbersome and is an eyesore. Redesign that input tube to make it more streamline, and, add a pre-filter intake sponge.
Love mine
I'm thinking of using this in conjunction with a sump based filter in a 150 gallon tank. Obviously it's not ideal for such a large aquarium on its own, but if the main filter has a problem, will it be good enough on its own to keep the tank from crashing for a few days?
Yes I loaded my fx6 on my 120 with 2l of seachem matrix and mechanical filtration to polish my water I let my sump run with some mechanical and mostly bio and it hides my heaters. Thinking about ditching the sump for 2 of these hard plumbed to my tank. Excellent filters
where can I get that gold fish tee shirt looks nice!
eBay also has it.
I'm going to be getting a 75 gallon tank for fresh water, and i would like to get the perfect canister filter for my tank, which one would you recommend.
Fluval fx6, the more flow the better and it's always good to go bigger then what you think will work, if you have to much flow with the fluval 6 you can turn it down if you dont have enough with the fluval 4 you cant turn it up, the price difference also isnt huge and you get more bio media in the fx6. Also if you ever upgraded tanks you already have a larger canister filter
totally agree. Fluval change your ribbed tubing.
Preach!
Which is better canister fluval or canister
I really want a fluval but worried about the noise level...and the sheer size of those things..
echoes1891 I have four quiet as can be
I just bought one and it is noisy. Motor unit too loud.
So, I was thinking about either the FX4 or the FX6 for my 135 gallon aquarium but Idk which would be better. I know the FX4 should be good for it but I really like to have more then what I need. It is an African Cichlid tank.
Wes P obv go for fx6
Wes P maybe you should get the FX6. I have FLUVAL FX4 in my 75g goldfish tank and Aqueon QuietFlow 75. And it's just right. And I think my 75g can handle the FX6 too.
FX6 for sure. Good flow for african chichlids
2 fx6 for 135 which fits the recommended 5 to 10x turn over rate
Would the fx4 be OVER KILL for my 55 gal turtle tank
No would be about 10x turn over rate and you can turn it down if your pet turtle is blown around to much
i would really like to try one of those out but i'm just not digging the price point. it does look like a nice unit. You are the first person to mention the hosing.
One of my many canisters but that is a good question Thomas. Never thought of that one as they are so widely used here in Canada. I will look into that one and let you know
Went to take a look at these.. And the Calgary store is closed? What happened? You guys leave Calgary?
hmm that's too bad. Was hoping it was just for renovations or something.
I hope they're going to reopen again, use to stop by whenever I go to PM hobby, was great selection of aquatics, now not so much options for Calgarians 😡
I run mine on a 90 gallon tank. No problem at all. It doesn't flow anywhere near 700 gph after losses. Which Fluval, as the only company I've seen so far, actually declares in their specs. Also, the pumps doesn't stop once an hour, they stop once every 12 hours. My main annoyment with it is that it is a bit loud. Also, I recommend rearranging the media a bit. Having a mechanical media last in the tank tends to concentrate dirt in the biological media, so I run, from top to bottom (which is the direction of flow, as opposed to most other filters): the medium foam that originally sits in the bottom, fine filter floss (both in the top basket) and then biological media in the remaining three baskets. I've also added a lot more biomedia compared to what was in it when I got it.
Hm, kinda feel like I came off like a bit of a know-it-all there. Sorry about that. Anyhow, I've had mine running for two weeks now, and the sort of most important point I wanted to make was that I run mine with taps full open on a 90 (ish, 300 litres) gallon tank, and the mostly livebearers I have in it don't seem to mind. More flow sensitive fish might not like it though, but you can turn the knobs down a little if you want, there is actually even a scale on them.
Do you think a 65 Gallon will be too much?
I have a question. Where is the chemical filtration? Is it in the filter pad? Also if the carbon is in the filter pad, would it successfully keep a 80 gallon flowerhorn tank crystal clear? I will also have to replace the carbon pad right? Once a month? ( if there is a carbon pad. They are $300 at my local fish store but how much do they cost in your store? Oh wait another question! Will the filter stop every 12 hours? If so, I would need another filter when the Fluval stops to purge air out.
Jason Guan you shouldn't really use carbon unless you're removing meds
RoadKillFrog True.... I don't have to worry though because I am just getting a 80 gallon flowerhorn tank with just sand, rocks, and a large plastic plant. It's not like I would use drift wood and have to have carbon because of the tannins. But I do have a question, since the filter stops every 12 hours to purge out air, does that mean I have to get another filter when the fx4 stops to purge out air?
Jason Guan adter 12 hours i believe the purging process only takes 2 minutes
RoadKillFrog oh thanks!
Thomas B ok thanks Thomas! How much does it cost in your store? Is big Al's located in Los Angles? I live there.
Just bought this for my 55
How's it been? I keep hearing it's either overkill and too much flow...or not.
@@timphillips3873 not to shabby, there is a lot of flow. I have peacock cichlids so i don't think they mind it. If i had different fish i would be worried. I think it is overkill. I also have 2 FX6's on my 180. i am a fan of overkill. lol
All my fish were fine a week ago but yesterday morning i woke up 2 of my rams were dead one has fungus on his right eye my other fish has fungus on them as well am in panic mode what should I do should I start over ??
First off, always test your water and do a water change of 25%-30% when you run into an emergency situation!
Fungus is usually brought about from poor water quality; a quick test using a test strip can let you know what parameter is out of whack (usually nitrate, or ammonia) so you can act quickly to rectify it. Also double check the tank temp! Temp swings can cause illnesses to flare up.
Can I use this one on my 48 Gallon Goldfish Tank? I have 4 Goldfish in it currently.
My fish is a betta and he eats flakes not pellets. Is that a problem?
6:00 😆😂🤣🤣🤣🤣
Canisters filter fx4 hawmuch Indian rupees
smashing my face on the keyboard. 700gph ha ha ha. I hate to brake the news but 700gph is at 0 head pressure with no media in it.
Why do you have an empty tank with plastic plants?
Fx6 on a half a gallon guppies container
Not enough filtration
would this he too big for a 50 gallon tank
by far
Yeah, it would probably be too much flow. I have one on a 90g and have the outputs turned down a bit because it is even too much for my tank. It mostly depends on what type of fish but wide open it would turn a 50 into a cyclone. Even with adjustable input/output valves it would probably be bad for the pump to restrict it a lot.
Matthew Doebereiner thanks ended up getting fluval 406 really like it
good to know. I always over filter my tanks, just happens to be my first tank in 20 years, and my how the tech has changed. I have spent the last 10 months or so debating and laying out my tank plans, to finally decide on one FX6. I was worried the flow would be too much. Might have to get creative on flow control
First!
Ugh...lol
Big Al's will it work on a 55 gallon planted tank. I have over stocked with loaches and rainbow fish.
asif hussain yup probably
asif hussain is it heavily or lightly planted
Biological Media heavily
I feel fluval canisters or filters in general are made to suck money out of you fx4 is a beast tho
haha 18 minutes ago this video was uploaded
I wish. But money. I'll stick with sunsun.
Thomas B I don't know much but I believe it's made by aquatop. Maybe someone who knows a little more can comment here for us.
Sun Sun and Aquatop share the same factory. From some of the research I've done, Sun Sun is a step down from the aquatop. Other info I've seen and read they are almost identical but some will say the Sun Sun feels a bit cheaper than the Aquatop. I'm leaning towards the Aquatop Cf500uv myself.
Damn dude. Eat a hamburger and do some pushups.
That's just mean...
I hate u
Being skinny is always better than being chubby or overweight. 100 times better. Easier to gain weight then losing it.
@@huyquoctran2088 not true lol
john tran I disagree. He should work out a lil. Put on some weight or muscle. He won’t get big, but he would be a sturdy coat hanger everyone would underestimate.
