  • In this video Darren Magee looks at Amy Dunne, female villain played by Rosamund Pike, from the movie Gone Girl, adapted from the book of the same name by Gillain Flynn. She marries Nick Dunne, played by Ben Affleck then begins a meticulous plan to destroy him. Is she a psychopath or a sociopath. What leads to her behaviour, and who exactly is 'Amazing Amy'?

She was terrifying in that movie, the actress played her brilliantly. Thanks for this insight

Amy also exhibited strong traits of borderline personality, however I think narcissism and psychopathy can be a part of that

It can be yes, but can also depend on which kind of borderline

I think amy is obviously a sociopath, her motives are very emotionals, and i have watched psychopaths on screen and she is so not like that

What other way could she take her husband being unfaithful if not personally, though?

my wife is a narcissist and i can't figure out if she is a psychopath or a sociopath or both. She is the vulnerable covert type. Not exactly charismatic but her allure s a very quiet demeanour, giving the illusion of mystery, and intelligence. She also appears sexually available and has the air if being single. Many people fantasise about having a fling, but she has absolutely no qualms, guilt or anxiety about doing it. Later denying everything.

Quite often narcissism can be an aspect of something else going on

I always thought sociopath is more of a schemer, and they are 'made' instead of 'born'. So I'd think Amy is sociopath with high narcissism also because of her parents and how she was raised, hence 'made'. But Dr. it seems to me what you mentioned about the difference between psychopath and sociopath is the 'impulse'. Because Amy is very calculating so that makes her more of a psychopath? Ugh it's still very confusing between the two for me...

It can be difficult, but I’ve been asked to make a video on the differences between the two. Hopefully I’ll get it uploaded soon, hope that helps

I'm shocked at the parallels I see with Amber Herd and Johnny Depp. Everything Amber has done to Johnny from countless lies and fake harm to physical violence is what Amy Dunne has done, even in some of the words and gestures Amber uses and she carries on threatening to destroy him. She was also diagnosed with bipolar personality disorder and hystrionic Nazism. That's incredible!
As Amber is an actress I'm wondering if she took inspiration from this film or if it's just her nature and that kind of glitches just happened to be very well narrated into the film.

That is your PERCEPTION of her. This movie is dealing with that subject as well - how media easily creates a perception of somebody (Nick as a husband-murderer based on his behavior in public).Masses are EASILY swayed, just like during witch trials. I would compare witch trials to AH-JD trial. Masses "burned" this woman for their own entertainment. I was listening to AH's testimony and I believed her regardless of public perception. That trial is a proof how powerful men use their fame and power to portray the picture that works for them. He was the one acting and public ete it all. He is a drug addict and alcoholic and he was even on drugs during the trial.Try being married to such a man and see how long it takes you before you lose your mind, which is what happened to AH. I hope one day the truth will be clear to everybody and all of you that believed that perception of her will look like shallow fools, just like all those crowds in similar situations do.
