  • Charles Malki, Biologist & Plant Expert @ IVOrganics.com/ and Mr. Steve List, of Sylmar Agricultural Center @ / @askmrlist5866 discuss the many benefits of whitewashing fruit trees with IV Organic, compared to latex paint & tar-based products. Benefits include protection from damaging: summer sunburn, winter sunscald, premature blooming, insect repellent, rodent repellent, grafting and tree wound sealant.
Benefits of using IV Organic WhiteWash & 3-in-1 Products:
    • IV Organic has WhiteWash (OIL FREE products), & 3-IN-1 (7 Natural Oils) for repelling damaging insects & girdling rodents.
    • Foliar Spray for weather extreme control, reduce transplant shock, and improve cloning success.
    • Protect bulbs before planting to protect from underground critters (insects & rodents).
    • Rose Prune Sealer
    • Tree Paste * Brush-On * Foliar Spray
    • Dries on porous, allowing water & nutrients to pass.
Using LATEX paint and TAR - based products: (1) are not organic, (2) are waterproof trapping moisture and contribute to rot on coated surfaces, especially on pruned & exposed surfaces, (3) are TOXIC contaminating garden soil within a year as the tree grows and LATEX and/or TAR sloughs off the growing tree contaminating garden soil for decades or more, as these products are designed to last forever; ie, painting your house.

I have been an arborist since the 1980s. But I am always trying to learn more. That is why I clicked on "painting fruit trees". The dangerous sun angles for tree bark are SOUTH & SOUTHWEST of the tree. At least in the northern hemisphere.
Also, latex paint is a TREE PRODUCT. That paint is COMPATIBLE with your trees. When buying latex paint, you want it to be:
•WHITE to reflect the sun's rays. Other paint colors may match (or "go with" something about the tree,) but they don't reflect. Non-white colors DON'T DO THE JOB! So how much protection is that?
•LATEX. It is compatible. Latex is a tree product.
    •Flat white.
•Exterior grade. It will hold up better in the weather.
Note please: paint on a tree will crack as the tree grows. This shows growth of the trunk's diameter. Makes sense, right? So some day you will need to repaint the tree. It is just one of those things in life that needs a little maintenance.
Notice I am not trying to sell you anything! Not the brand of paint I prefer, and not my own services. So go enjoy taking care of your trees. But for best results do it right.

      Hi Michael,
I've heard exterior paint can potentially hurt the tree because of added chemicals and keep reading/seeing to only use interior paint for that reason. Is that not true?
Also, do you know when I should paint the trees as I can't find anyone who says when it's best to do it? I planted 2 peach trees in March and I'm in Texas where it gets HOT so didn't know if it would be best waiting until the fall after I spray on the copper treatment or if I should do it now to help with preventing sunburn.
      Thanks for your time.

      Howdy Tex!
I have come back to see how the comments and thumb count are going. And was pleased to find your comment.
To answer your question, the allowable temperatures for tree painting begin at 50° and up.
You will see that my comment is now listed as edited. I smoothed out the presentation somewhat. But the information is still valid and unchanged. That includes using exterior paint.
Life is full of chemicals. A lot of them are good for you, your family, your dog and your tree. Not every modern and helpful product is harmful. In fact it's one of the reasons we live so much longer now.. You can skip painting your fruit trees but the risk is "sunscald". And that will decimate some bark on the trees. This can lead to decay or a shorter life for your tree.. So it's up to you.
One of the first things that makes me cringe is when I hear "I heard somewhere that..." A lot of know-it-all people don't know much.
The only thing wrong with these people is that they "know" so much that just isn't true.
Thanks for writing in. Have you learned much about proper pruning? This will help your tree's health too. 🌳 I recommend books by Alex Shigo. They are worth the price. Quality books!
      Michael.

      Thanks for writing in.
Sorry to say I don't know the answer. Therefore I don't know what effect acrylic paint will have on your tree. I hope it was at least flat white exterior grade.
If/when the acrylic paint peels, at least you know now to use latex next time.
Would you care to let us know if anything happens, please?
      Thanks,
      Michael

I gotta admit ya sold me on Organic wash vs latex mix !!! ... I see it as a person wearing a cotton tshirt in summer vs the sport jersey wearing guy on same day. That jersey does get warmer due to synthetic fibers , unlike the more natural cotton that does allow a more comforting feeling.

Hello P.W. 👋 I reheard that part several times before we decided to keep it (as we too thought the same as you stated); however, of your painting in the north direction, you will be protecting the southern part (hottest / sunniest side) of the tree. It’s good to learn different ways of explanation- and the reason we kept it as the statement is correct! GREAT observation!!!
