    *Tools and Supplies -
    9 Pack of Tiles (any type) - I used a travertine style tile that is 4 inches x 4 inches - thd.co/1lAYAeN
    Mod Podge - amzn.to/1TFz3LY
Photos, magazine clippings, old Maps, post Cards, travel tickets, etc as designs on the tile
Scissors or Craft Trimmer - amzn.to/1TFz2rj
    Foam Brush $1.00
    Ruler
3/8 inch felt pads (4 circles for each coaster) - amzn.to/1TFz8zn
Spray Sealer (to waterproof and protect coasters) - amzn.to/1RIBgI7
    Roller (optional) - amzn.to/1TFzx4B
Total Project Cost: Approximately $20 to buy everything. Each coaster set of 4 only costs around $4-7 though! With the sealers / mod podge you'll be able to make at least 50 coasters. Simply buy more tiles to make dozens of holiday or birthday gifts!
    Clean Tiles
Clean the tiles using a rag and water or rubbing alcohol. This will remove any dust or debris from the tile.
    Cut Designs
Cut designs for the coasters. Use photos, magazine clippings, old maps, newspaper, memorable travel tickets, or anything else that would be fun to have on a custom coaster. I’ve used maps of towns I’ve lived in and places I’ve visited on vacations. In the video tutorial I use some cool photos of paintings, wildlife, and a few maps from a recent trip to Costa Rica. I’d recommend cutting the designs slightly smaller than the actual tile. The tiles I used are 4 inches by 4 inches. I cut the photos down to 3 1/2 inches by 3 1/2 inches. The artist of the colorful wildlife used in this project is by Teshia Art of Missoula, Montana.
    Apply Mod Podge to Tile
Apply a thin layer of Mod Podge to the top of the tile with a foam brush. This will act as an adhesive to stick on your design.
    Apply Photo / Design
Put the design on the tile. Push air bubbles from the center out to the sides and make sure the design is centered on the tile. Use a roller (optional) to help flatten the image and remove air bubbles. Let the coaster’s adhesive layer dry for 10 to 20 minutes.
Apply Mod Podge to top and sides
Use a foam brush to apply three thin coats of Mod Podge to the top and sides of the coasters. Brush in alternating directions for each coat. Let the Mod Podge dry to the touch (about 10 - 20 minutes) between coats. The Mod Podge will dry clear.
    Apply Spray Sealer
Apply 2 coats of a clear spray sealer to the coasters to seal and waterproof them. Make sure to do this in a well ventilated area. Spray the top, sides, and bottom side. Let the sealer dry for 20 minutes or so. Allow the smell to dissipate before taking inside.
    Add Felt Pads
Apply felt pads or cork to the bottom side.
Enjoy or Gift your new DIY Coasters!
Wrap them in some twine and gift them to a friend or family member for a birthday or holiday gift! If you are thinking about selling your coasters at a Farmers Market or online, I’d recommend selling for between $18 and $30. Please re-pin and share with your friends and family if you enjoyed this tutorial. Comment with questions and post photos below. I hope you have fun with this project. Cheers from Montana! - Pete

    Travertine Stones...
Try this... in the little tiny holes,
put a tiny bit of glue in them, then
put gold leaf in that... it looks like a "Gold Strike"
or you can put gold nail polish in the crevasse or holes too.
    The gold foil looks real...
    Thanks for the great video/tutorial

Hi Pete. Great video! Can you please tell me if Krylon Crystal Clear (Acrylic Coating 1303), would work to seal travertine tiles? After sealing, do you need to bake in an oven, or can the coasters be used after sealing with the spray? Also, are these coasters ok to use with hot/cold beverages?

+Vinnie C Hey Vinnie! Of course man, glad you are out and feeling better! If you are thinking about getting into vlogging / online business I have two recommendations to start learning. First, listen to the SmartPassiveIncome Podcast by Pat Flynn. It is free and awesome. I went from making my 1st dollar online in 2011 to making a full time income because of his help. Also, check out the video creators CZcams channel with Tim Schmoyer. He is a great resource for learning about CZcams. Lastly, I'll be coming out with an online course in Q1 of 2015 that I think you'll find helpful. I'll let you know when it's out. Have a great week!

After one week, I used Dupli-Color Varnish and let the tiles to cure for a week. Then when I put a very hot mug on the tile, it didn't stick but there was a deep circle. Hi!
I’ve been making these tiles for awhile now! Unfortunately the packs of travertine tiles I’ve brought from my local hardware store recently have a lot of holes in them... I know that’s part of giving the coaster some “character”- but the last 3 packs I’ve bought had so many holes that it messed up a lot of the pictures I put on them...
Do you know how or what to use to fill in the holes on these type of tiles to where they will still be a durable coaster??

    • @DIYPETE

    @jgeoghegan1786 Před 6 lety

Dear Pete: I made some of these coasters for some kids families I coach as gifts with our team label on them. Couple of questions:1) I love the type of tile you use because it has a great look to it. I tried filing the imperfections in the tile with Mod Podge but it seems like it doesn't really get in the cracks and it would take 5-6 coats to probably level them out. Is there something else I could use or should a I just go get flat tiles and call it a day?2) The bigger problem and I followed your steps exactly and used the exact materials you used is that the when I apply the spray sealer it dries like in video. Then I apply for tiny felt pads to the bottom side. So after letting them dry (now for days at a time after applying several sealer coats) I had them stacked and was about to give them as gifts. Well when I looked them over one last time the felt pads on bottom of coasters had left 4 permanent felt marks on each of the coasters. So I redid the sealer step again let it dry for a week and sadly 4 more felt spots ended up on the coasters when I stacked them. Is there something else I can use to stop this from happening? I looked at maybe getting epoxy resin but the spray stuff is so much easier to use if it actually hardened and I didn't get those felt marks. Spray resin out there I could use?Any feedback you could provide with links to materials would be greatly appreciated.

    • @DIYPETE
      @DIYPETE  Před 6 lety

Hi J, great to hear from you! If you want to fill the voids you could fill them with grout. I used these because I like the look and the voids didn't cause any issues -- but you could either fill -- or simply buy tiles without them. I haven't had that issue with the marks - did you use the same sealer after the mod podge? Have a good day!

Yes I used the exact same sealer you used in your videos. Every single time I stack the coasters the same thing happens over and over. I've been just throwing another coat on them which gets rid of the 4 spots but I'm afraid to give these to folks if they're all going to have marks on them. Is there a better sealer out these (price isn't a concern) that hardens fairly solid I could get instead the Rustoleam? Thanks again for your response and if you can think of a good sealer that hardens pretty strong I'd appreciate it.

Liked these ideas. Just sayin' though, it's actually MOD PODGE (Not Modge Podge)
