Painters tape along the back of the coasters will make the lumps easy to remove. When it drys after 12 you can take off the tape with will remove all the bumps perfectly.
Omg I tried that and it was a total disaster!! I think it's okay if you're working on larger projects but these little tiles, not so much. I also used to make batches of 100. So cutting 4 tiny strips for each tile was just totally a PAIN! But just wiping the edges twice (once after 15 mins and again after 45) definitely was super easy and worked like a charm!!
Ya know I saw that on a video once. I tried it and it was a total fail!!! First of all, when you do 40 coasters at a time, taking the time to tape all four sides of an item is a NIGHTMARE. If the tape isn't perfectly trimmed to the exact size of the coaster, it doesn't work because the epoxy will just pool at the little extra lip it creates. Secondly, when I tried this, on the coasters that I was able to trim the tape to the exact dimension, the epoxy dripped and gooped over the tape seam, therefore just embedding the tape onto the underside of the coaster. So, after many trial and error experiments, for me, personally, I deemed it a hell of a lot easier to skip the tape altogether and simply swipe the drips after 15 mins and then 45 mins and then you're good to go! No tape needed. I appreciate the tip though!!
Hmm good to know! I'm new to making the tiles and practice on a 4"x4" canvas board and this seemed to work fine but maybe its different with tile? I've also seen people cover the bottom with cork which gives it a very professional finish. You're artwork is amazing and thank you for this video!
Yes I’ve tried that and it didn’t work at all. What DID work amazingly well was to go and wipe around the edges about 15 and then again at 45 mins after you pour. Eliminates them completely! And no weird taping necessary.

Karen Campbell I have a question for you, i have this one tile that for some reason will not dry from the side. That one was done since Sunday, it's already Wednesday and that one spot remain wet. What would you recommend I do? One more question some of my coasters are coming out with dents as if layer was not even, can I pour another layer of resin after first coat is completely cured? I would greatly appreciate your help. Thanks in advance.
sandra quiroga yes you can pour layers, not a problem. Typically if you have it not curing properly it was because it wasn't mixed EXACTLY. You really do have to stir for 3 minutes and make certain those two ingredients are 100000% mixed. Drying temperature is also important. If it's too cold they won't cure properly either. my best advice is to follow the directions TO THE LITERAL LETTER on the back of your epoxy resin. It is very particular! I'm sorry you're having a trouble spot!!

This is such a great video! I'm going to attempt this today except with the Amazing Clear Cast (since I already have it on hand from making those Ozark Tumblers) and then give some as gifts for 'testing' and see how they hold up.
Karen Campbell, Artist = Will do :D I googled around and saw other people using the Amazing Clear Cast so figured since I already had it, have a ton of tiles I can't use for anything else, this should be the perfect project, lol. And I happen to have that hammered copper spray paint already.
So the Amazing Clear Cast worked great, my only issue is the resin leaking under the images. I printed out the designs on an inkjet on an 8.5"X11" sheet of paper. I sealed the paper with the designs on the front AND back with Polycrylic, let each side dry, then cut designs out. Still had some leaking under the design. I think the next attempt is cutting the designs out of the paper THEN sealing with the Polycrylic so that the 'cut edges' get sealed too. Other than that, the Clear Cast is great. I assume professionally printed images wouldn't leak, and there's so many sites to get them printed up (like shutterstock) that it would be the best way to go...but I'd rather cheap out and figure out how to seal inkjet images at home, lol. Another advantage to sealing the images prior is they won't wrinkle up if you use mod podge to attach them to the tile...so at least I figured out the mod podge wrinkling issue lol.

Very grateful for your wonderful video! I am having difficulty with the resin adhering to the sides of the tile. Difficult to describe, but it's as though the resin just drips right off the side. The sides are uneven and not a thick coat at all. I apply beer can labels on the top of the coasters so the sides are super important since it seals all of it together. Recently had an issue with the resin rising off the top due to the sides not being secured enough. Your coasters look awesome! Please help lol I use "Let's Resin" and white tiles from Amazon.
OH NO! That's very strange actually, the tiles I used to use also had pretty uneven sides but I didn't experience what you're talking about here. My only thought is maybe you're not applying enough resin so that it's really running over all 4 sides equally. Maybe you're applying it too sparingly? If it's really dripping off all 4 sides it should be nicely coated, and then you can periodically scrape the excess off the BOTTOM of the tiles. I do this every 15 minutes or so with a popsicle stick, until it gets too hard to do anymore (at about minute 45). I hope that helps some!

@@Divinetraveller1122 I understand quite clearly what the issue is based on your great description (not that you can’t email me, I just understand without having to see a photo). I just looked up your resin - yours in non-toxic and odorless. Commercial is very much toxic and has an odor (obviously not awesome) but I think the culprit is your resin. I’d get a commercial grade epoxy resin (vs your craft grade) I think that will absolutely fix your problem!

Question! I love this video and the results are stunning, however, can you please tell me if this process is also Heat-Resistant as I want to make sure the hot cups wont stick to the coasters once cured. TIA
Mine did stick a bit but I still used them 🤷♀️cold and condensation also makes them stick though so it’s normal. Doesn’t prohibit use though or ruin them.

If you wipe away the drips at minute 15 and 45, you're good! I just use the side of a popsicle stick, the tape so doesn't work. Also you can use a heat gun to pop the air bubbles super easily!

@@ArtsThatSpeak just FYI the tape underneath (for me) did NOT work at all! Just swiping it off was fine. The tape is a hard in all the wrong ways, I totally skip it to save yourself a lot of frustration!

I would try to be careful with them. The resin should help them to be sturdier, but they can still break, as the resin doesn't really coat the bottom. Hope this helps.
Do you order square photo prints the size of the tile or cut out the photo to fit the tile? Didn’t know walgreens did that size. Please share insight. Thanks.
@@rinkidey7736 these are standard tiles that are standard size, I forget the exact dimension but the photos are 4" square so the tiles are slightly bigger than that.

Oh sorry!!! You perch them because after you pour the resin on top, it drips down over the sides. You need to have access to the bottoms so you can clear away the drips. If you don't put the tiles up on top like that, they will permanently adhere to the plate (or whatever surface you place them down on!). So perching is 1000% necessary!!! hahahaa I hope that helps!
Jody Shafer-Mezeske yes I have tried that!! I found, however, that it didnt work for a few reasons. One was that the tape has to be cut EXACTLY square to fit the tile. If just a jar too long, the resin pools along the tape edge, and if too short, resin seeps into the crack and makes it impossible to peel off. It was a HUGE pain. Honeslty, if you just qioe off the excess at 15 minutes and 45 minutes (after pour), you're totally good!!
Well they don't work awesome with hot things, scalding items effect the resin, just fyi! Yes the tiles are glossy but spray paint works on, literally, everything!
I use resin in my jewelry making. I have to completely seal the edges of both regular paper and photo paper with Modpodge to prevent the resin wicking in and discoloring the paper. You aren't sealing your photo paper before pouring the resin, so why don't you have this problem? Is the photo paper somehow different? Your coasters are adorable. Thank you for the video.
+Peg Jackson Hey Peg! I have made jewelry too and experienced the same problems. The problems stopped entirely when I started using actual photo prints...like from walgreens, target or wherever. That photo paper is entirely different than photo paper on your inkjet printer and takes a beating!! I hope that helps!
@@KarenCampbellArtist hey. sorry for late reply. im using resin on coasters an small paintings. i find once dry the resin is clear. however if u look at certain angles there veiny/ lines like a river on a map from birds eye view. although it is flat and clear at face value

It hasn't so far. Inhave a friend who kept hers outside in the sun and hers has though. I keep my coasters inside and they look the same as when I make them a few years ago.

Oh yes I made hundreds of these designs and had a coffee and tea set and a billion wines!!! I sold every last one and then got so exhausted from making them I moved on to less toxic activities 😂
Hey Karen thank you so much for this video. I've been looking to purchase something like this on a slightly larger tile with my grandmother's face on it. She passed away in July from old age, she wasn't ill in the slightest and was 100 years old. I'm taking her ashes back home to be buried next to her beloved father and wanted to put a tiled picture of her on her final resting place. Having seen this video I am going to attempt to make it myself. I know it will be waterproofed from what you have said in the video but do you think it will withstand the hot Sun of Jamaica and the occasional downpour of rain. I intend to make it all the same, just wanted a heads up.....thanks once again for the tutorial, never done anything like this before but I know I'm going to enjoy making this, even down to the little perches 😄
I'm so sorry to hear about your grandmother. The resin does not love heat or sun so much, I do have to say, I had a friend who kept hers on the hot, sunny porch and the resin did not fair well but maybe you can find a shady place to put it. Enjoy the process and keepsake nonetheless, they really are gorgeous.

elizabeth sharman I get my photos printed at Walgreens so they are on professional photo paper, not home printed! I also upload my prints from Instagram so they are already a perfect square
Laura Cohen In am horrible at image transfers so this works best for me. You most certainly could, I am sure there are other youtube vids about how to do image transfers! Personally, it is a messy and less than successful process that I dont enjoy so much!
Beautiful!!! definitely have to this a try. Instead of using Resin, could I use mod podge or a paint finisher spray? I’m so scared to use resin around the kiddos.
I watched a lady use 5 coats of Mod Podge Sealer on her coasters, and she said it was just fine for COLD drinks to place on them, but that when she tried putting HOT drinks on them like a mug of coffee or tea, it started to melt through the sealer! So she ended up using a couple of coats of polyurethane.

melissasinatra yes of course!! I used a pentel mechanical pencil followed by a Stabilo All pencil in black. Then I used just plain water to activate it! You can see a link to the Stabilo as well as a slew of some of my other favorite supplies at karencampbellartist.com/supplies!
Jody Shafer-Mezeske I use it with my morning coffee and it's fine. If the mug is BURNING hot then sometimes it will stick to the coaster. so you do have to be aware of that. I havent had a single customer complain tho...or you can just use it for cocktails and cold drinks to stay safe.
Do you seal your coasters? I have found that printing on an inkjet printer I have to seal them otherwise the colours just merge a little bit into eachother, I tried a matte spray varnish and it ruined my prints! they went all misty.. Im currently just using a lick of PVA over the top but does anyone know of any spray sealants that wont ruin inkjet print?
Leah Ollsson ink jet paper will run, for sure. If you watch this entire video you will see I get my photos printed at Walgreens and then pour epoxy resin over them. They come out like magic!!! It's actually really crazy. I've made hundreds and sold every single last one. Process really works!!! But for it to work you needed them to be professionally printed.
ive found an awesome way to print at home and still keep the quality amazing! Brush over acrylic medium! this seals the print underneath without affecting the resin or the print.

I hope u want mind if I suggest something for you. your work is so nice but I use a couple of products I would like to share with you. you may or may not know about them. I have used both and I like both of them. The first is Triple Thick brush on gloss glaze, this one is so thick I add a little water to it when I am applying it. The other is Mod Podge super gloss. These just seem to be easier to use. no mixing. just try it if you have the time. thanks, Fran email me if you have a question.

OH NO! That's very strange actually, the tiles I used to use also had pretty uneven sides but I didn't experience what you're talking about here. My only thought is maybe you're not applying enough resin so that it's really running over all 4 sides equally. Maybe you're applying it too sparingly? If it's really dripping off all 4 sides it should be nicely coated, and then you can periodically scrape the excess off the BOTTOM of the tiles. I do this every 15 minutes or so with a popsicle stick, until it gets too hard to do anymore (at about minute 45). I hope that helps some!

@@Divinetraveller1122 I understand quite clearly what the issue is based on your great description (not that you can’t email me, I just understand without having to see a photo). I just looked up your resin - yours in non-toxic and odorless. Commercial is very much toxic and has an odor (obviously not awesome) but I think the culprit is your resin. I’d get a commercial grade epoxy resin (vs your craft grade) I think that will absolutely fix your problem!

Mine did stick a bit but I still used them 🤷♀️cold and condensation also makes them stick though so it’s normal. Doesn’t prohibit use though or ruin them.
What do you mean; you perch them?
I perch them on top of the cup/plate tower I make, so that the excess can drop off 🤗
what is the color of the spraypaint called?
Not sure as this was done a few years ago but probably something close to copper or bronze. Metal!!

If you wipe away the drips at minute 15 and 45, you're good! I just use the side of a popsicle stick, the tape so doesn't work. Also you can use a heat gun to pop the air bubbles super easily!

I would try to be careful with them. The resin should help them to be sturdier, but they can still break, as the resin doesn't really coat the bottom. Hope this helps.

What size are your photos? If the tile is 4x4 what size gives you the border that you have?
They are 4" x 4" as well. The tiles are just that much larger, naturally!

Oh sorry!!! You perch them because after you pour the resin on top, it drips down over the sides. You need to have access to the bottoms so you can clear away the drips. If you don't put the tiles up on top like that, they will permanently adhere to the plate (or whatever surface you place them down on!). So perching is 1000% necessary!!! hahahaa I hope that helps!

I wonder if putting painters tape along the bottom would help. Then just tear off the drips on the tape ??
Jody Shafer-Mezeske yes I have tried that!! I found, however, that it didnt work for a few reasons. One was that the tape has to be cut EXACTLY square to fit the tile. If just a jar too long, the resin pools along the tape edge, and if too short, resin seeps into the crack and makes it impossible to peel off. It was a HUGE pain. Honeslty, if you just qioe off the excess at 15 minutes and 45 minutes (after pour), you're totally good!!
Are the tiles glossy when you buy them? I don't know why I worry the paint won't stick.

Well they don't work awesome with hot things, scalding items effect the resin, just fyi! Yes the tiles are glossy but spray paint works on, literally, everything!

I use resin in my jewelry making. I have to completely seal the edges of both regular paper and photo paper with Modpodge to prevent the resin wicking in and discoloring the paper. You aren't sealing your photo paper before pouring the resin, so why don't you have this problem? Is the photo paper somehow different? Your coasters are adorable. Thank you for the video.

Hey Peg! I have made jewelry too and experienced the same problems. The problems stopped entirely when I started using actual photo prints...like from walgreens, target or wherever. That photo paper is entirely different than photo paper on your inkjet printer and takes a beating!! I hope that helps!

im using resin on coasters an small paintings. i find once dry the resin is clear. however if u look at certain angles there veiny/ lines like a river on a map from birds eye view. although it is flat and clear at face value

Has your envirotex resin yellowed over time?
It hasn't so far. Inhave a friend who kept hers outside in the sun and hers has though. I keep my coasters inside and they look the same as when I make them a few years ago.

Oh yes I made hundreds of these designs and had a coffee and tea set and a billion wines!!! I sold every last one and then got so exhausted from making them I moved on to less toxic activities 😂

What happens when you have water residue from your cold glasses?
The resin/varnish coating prevents moisture from damaging the print on the tile. It's very important to use a good sealant for this very reason.

Hey Karen thank you so much for this video. I've been looking to purchase something like this on a slightly larger tile with my grandmother's face on it. She passed away in July from old age, she wasn't ill in the slightest and was 100 years old. I'm taking her ashes back home to be buried next to her beloved father and wanted to put a tiled picture of her on her final resting place. Having seen this video I am going to attempt to make it myself. I know it will be waterproofed from what you have said in the video but do you think it will withstand the hot Sun of Jamaica and the occasional downpour of rain. I intend to make it all the same, just wanted a heads up.....thanks once again for the tutorial, never done anything like this before but I know I'm going to enjoy making this, even down to the little perches 😄
I'm so sorry to hear about your grandmother. The resin does not love heat or sun so much, I do have to say, I had a friend who kept hers on the hot, sunny porch and the resin did not fair well but maybe you can find a shady place to put it. Enjoy the process and keepsake nonetheless, they really are gorgeous.

Laura Cohen In am horrible at image transfers so this works best for me. You most certainly could, I am sure there are other youtube vids about how to do image transfers! Personally, it is a messy and less than successful process that I dont enjoy so much!

ArtByReneeA you can (and I have) but it makes for a far less impressive product. But you can!
I watched a lady use 5 coats of Mod Podge Sealer on her coasters, and she said it was just fine for COLD drinks to place on them, but that when she tried putting HOT drinks on them like a mug of coffee or tea, it started to melt through the sealer! So she ended up using a couple of coats of polyurethane.

Neha Hadli sure! I took old sheet music and covered it in white Gesso. Then I used a black Stabilo All pencil and activated it with water.

Is this resin heat tolerable? Ike if setting a hot beverage on it?
Jody Shafer-Mezeske I use it with my morning coffee and it's fine. If the mug is BURNING hot then sometimes it will stick to the coaster. so you do have to be aware of that. I havent had a single customer complain tho...or you can just use it for cocktails and cold drinks to stay safe.

Do you seal your coasters? I have found that printing on an inkjet printer I have to seal them otherwise the colours just merge a little bit into eachother, I tried a matte spray varnish and it ruined my prints! they went all misty.. Im currently just using a lick of PVA over the top but does anyone know of any spray sealants that wont ruin inkjet print?
Leah Ollsson ink jet paper will run, for sure. If you watch this entire video you will see I get my photos printed at Walgreens and then pour epoxy resin over them. They come out like magic!!! It's actually really crazy. I've made hundreds and sold every single last one. Process really works!!! But for it to work you needed them to be professionally printed.
ive found an awesome way to print at home and still keep the quality amazing! Brush over acrylic medium! this seals the print underneath without affecting the resin or the print.

I enjoyed watching you so much. I hope u want mind if I suggest something for you. your work is so nice but I use a couple of products I would like to share with you. you may or may not know about them. I have used both and I like both of them. The first is Triple Thick brush on gloss glaze, this one is so thick I add a little water to it when I am applying it. The other is Mod Podge super gloss. These just seem to be easier to use. no mixing. just try it if you have the time. thanks, Fran email me if you have a question.
