That’s one of the most unrealistic things about the show. I mean she didn’t do small things. She did big horrible things like almost ruining a man’s career and embarrassing payson. I recently binged the show again and I forgot all the horrible things she did. Another unrealistic thing is payson and kayliee still being her friends after all the crap she did to them.

Man that line was so hilarious. It’s the first time (in this review anyway, I haven’t seen the show) that Lauren, fully verbalizes what she did and why. And it’s amazing because it really hits you with the insanity of what she’s done.
You should do Dance Academy. Now that show was underrated and an iconic stable of my teen years. They even have a movie.

What really makes me angry about the Emily incident is that it’s almost like she never exists. The girls never talk about reaching out to check on her and still offer their support. They don’t even talk about trying to reach out to her and her ignoring them. She doesn’t do gymnastics so I guess she doesn’t matter to them anymore 🤷♀️
The "and Emily got pregnant. Bad things happen when teen girls keep secrets" made me laugh so hard.
Emily didn't just get pregnant because she had a secret boyfriend. Everyone has had secret boyfriends since day 1. She got pregnant because she didn't have proper sex education. No one told her that even though her menstrual cycle is hella effed up and it was just gonna be a one time thing, she still needs protection. Her mom probably assumed she was smart enough to know better so she didn't bother having The Talk with her. Damon is either dumb or also assumed Emily is smart and mature enough to know what she's doing. The Rock and their homeschool program seems to have an abstinence focused sex education. Lauren, despite famously not having a mom, is the most sexually active of the group and she managed to not get pregnant. Lauren is a menace with mommy issues, but she knows to use a condom or get birth control.

It’s equally possible that Damon didn’t have proper sex ed either. There are plenty of sex myths out there and it is distressingly common for men and woman to know very little about the inner workings of the opposite gender. I’d say what most likely happened is that Emily told him that she rarely gets her period and he, like her, assumed that it meant she couldn’t get pregnant
Every teenager in the states of sound mind should know that they can get pregnant. Most just play a game of chance. The writers just wanted her gone.

the portrayal of girls feeding each others ED's in treatment is accurate for people in denial and first timers, i remember when i was one and i remember seeing others form lol, i think someone with an ED was involved somewhat in writing this

Unfortunately Nassar, though the biggest one, is not the first sex scandal of the gymnastic world in the US. The storyline is probably based on Marvin Sharp, the US Gymnastics 2010 Coach of the year who was held on four counts of child molesting and three counts of sexual misconduct with a minor (he killed himself in jail). The timeline sorta fits the one of the show, plus his position as coach (he coached Olympians at the time, such as Bridget Sloan)
@@matariki9818 There are so many stories of abusive coaches. Telling the gymnasts to lose weight even when they don’t need to, sexual abuse, over exercising and strenuous workouts. It just negatively impacts them in the long run.

Well, the show was canceled. It wasn’t their fault. They didn’t finish their story, which would’ve been the Olympics. The network did it.

I know they believed Chelsea couldn't be in a leo all the time while pregnant but couldn't they just have gaslighted us as viewers and used apparatuses, gym bags, weird angles to hide her belly until the final season then Emily finally had an injury that took her out of the running of the worlds or the olympics? Because that storyline was not it! It was just unnecessary suffering or at least have a storyline where Emily sees, as a mom/mom to be, that her mom was simply doing the best she could with what she had before dipping
Watching the series, I knew Lauren was the "villain" but watching your recaps where all her wrongdoings keep coming one after the other? That girl was booked and busy ruining people's lives! I see a lot of requests for Secret Life of the American Teenager for your next series, which, yes please, but in part 1 you mentioned The O.C and omg I need you to recap that so bad. She was a legend
Let’s be real Payson was an icon. She was that girlie and my favorite. I think partially because she is clearly modeled after Shawn Johnson who is another one of my fave gymnasts from the 08 Olympics. Power tumbler and then a artistic girlie? Icon

💯💯. I hated Emily’s character for the longest. She treated her mother like crap and kept stringing Damon on when it was beneficial to her. Her mom wasn’t perfect and made mistakes but her mom loved her so much. She tried so hard only for her own daughter to 💩 on her every single time. Payson and Emily had the best moms imo.
No literal Emily mom was trashed by other gym moms because she was “tacky” classism and slut shamed constantly not only that she struggled so much for her own daughter to shit on her constantly
Payson was probably the most likable character on the show. She told it like it is. I also disliked Summer for pushing her agenda. Lauren deserves no friends, like they never suspected Lauren was behind stuff.

One thing I learned watching these videos is that most of the characters (excluding Lauren) are much better people than I am. Payson learned that her so called friend Lauren was the reason her life was almost ruined but she still tried to earn Lauren forgiveness for literally saving her life because of her heart issue. If that was me Lauren was yelling at in the hospital room she would not only need heart surgery but plastic surgery as well.

Emily shouldn’t steal but in all fairness, the ambulance+ doctor stay would’ve cost a hell of a lot more than those pills. I once was in an ambulance from my school to the nearest hospital and it was less than a mile…tell me why the bill was 9k for the ambulance alone??? I was under very good insurance so the company dealt with that, but Emily’s family is uninsured AND poor. Also Lauren…a mess. I wish I watched this show when it was on tv but I think I was a bit too young and was not interested at all.

The actress who played Payson has a ballet background ! I don't know if my memories are warped by time, but her dance elements were so much better than the other girls. The paint dance from earlier in the show was my favorite when I first watched it.

The characters who do bad things aren't defined by the bad they do. They arent just one dimensional stereotypes. Carter the boyfriend is a great example.
He cheated on Kaylie but he feels bad about it, He calls out Lauren for stealing Emily's move .
Then Marty the gym coach, he Ruined one of the parents marriage but he stood up for Emily.
There is more examples of this shows characters having humanity but God i love this show

Austin is SO out of touch with how medical bills work when he says, "wHy diDnt yOu cAll aN amBuLance?" Ambulance rides cost thousands of dollars. She was rightfully afraid that (1) the ambulance would take too long and (2) it would put them deeper in debt. I still think she made the right choice by stealing those meds, the pharmacist was wrong to call the cops on her, and everyone else was wrong to give her a hard time. Sorry.
