Well you said you stopped listening as soon as he said he didn't believe in God, I know a decision like that don't come normally without a lot of thought some of the most intelligent people are the ones who come to this conclusion usually after careful study,research, reflection and at the same time most believers just basically go to church try to have a conversation with them about what they really believe and you will find that they don't no much, they join church because it's what they've always done since they were kids and didn't have a choice it's like you are born into your faith generationally transferred from their elders, that said the conversation was not centered around God and they hit a issues you never know what you might pick up, but if nothing else practice listening,that's a lost art.
