Thank you so much for your wonderful comment :) I'm so happy that you were able to find my video useful :) And good luck with your clematis cuttings :) Please keep me posted on their progress :)
These cuttings didn't survive this time :( I uploaded an update video a while ago... it was soooo hot this summer that it just cooked everything... these cuttings were scortched. i will attempt it next spring again... stay tuned
i started w/ only 4 or 5 cuttings. When it got extremely hot (high 90's), I brought them inside onto a sunny windowsill. I'm going to keep one & give one to friend. Thanks again!!
Thank you soooo very much for the informative detailed video. The quality of the video was perfect-sound [So many videos can't be viewed because the sound is so low, but yours was perfect!], color, focus. Your close-up enabled me to see exactly how to make the cuttings and do the planting. Your spoke clearly without stammering and without dialect, neither too fast nor too slow. Your instructions were consecutive step-by-step. Really a PERFECT video. Thank you so very much. Pat Reader
Thanks for the video. Mound layering is a great way to propagate, fool proof! putting rock or something on the ground over the root area is a nice trick to protect the root system. If you cut "some" Clematis back in the spring, more shoots will come up! Blessings and happy gardening.
Good video! I root clematis with great success. I use a dish tub with course sand and perlite. I use a 2 node cutting and bury them to the leaf node. I used to make a tent for them to put over the tub and stick them under a tree where they get dappled sunlight. I had good success with them. Now a propagate them under intermittent mist in 50% shade. Some shade and good timing is the key. direct sun will cook them. after rooted and repotted they go in the shade for another week or 2 for some recoup time. I hope it works out for you this year. Happy Growing!
A node is where the leaves intersect the stem. I cut my stem every two nodes and remove the leaves from one node. Dip this one in rooting hormone and plant it about 2" down. This year I did single node cuttings. I cut the stem between each node. I planted the stem and got about 80% from them. The tip cutting were too soft and didn't do well.
This is so helpful. I know the general way to propagate but I like to look up methods for specific plants from an experienced gardener.. My Clematis broke (they're so brittle!), so I'm going to try and prop it.
Thank you for the info on clematis propogating. I bought 2 Guernsey Clematis two years apart and propgated both of them separately according to your instructions. I have between 5-7 cuttings for each plant. They've been in regular potting soil with a baggie and a rubber band for about 2 weeks. My first cuttings got fried when I had a large bag that did not fit the pot, so I doubled it so that it could fit the pot circumference....wrong! Leaves turned brown. Do-over! I'm anxious to see what comes up. Thanks again and please continue making videos!
Howdy Kevin :) Good question. I will leave the ziploc bag on mine until i see sprouts staring to grow. At this point i will open the bag half way to allow some humidity out. and then eventually just remove the bag. morning sun is actually the best for this process it is a lot cooler and less damaging. Keep me posted on your progress :)
I was reading and it makes sence that bougainvillea do best with the layering propagation technique.... stem cuttings from what i remember are about 20 percent success from cuttings.... they are tricky little ones.... best way i would say is to score the bark on a branch and pull that score mark to the soil... and place a stone on it to keep it there... keep the area moist and never let it dry out... but not soggy.... after a month or 3 there should be roots :) Good luck :)
I just ordered a clematis online that was very small and the vine was broken in a couple of places... so I planted the broken sections like you did in this video and hopefully at least one will survive! thanks for the video
thanks so much for such perfect, easy to follow instructions. i successfully propagated two clematises/ climati (??) :) Just have to patient ... it takes a while but well worth it! thanks again... i'm excited to have two new babies!!
I wintered mine year 1 potted clematis plant inside this past year. Now it is outdoors again. It loves my morning sun terrace. I rooted a sprig easily with rooting hormone power, just wet, dip, shake and put in moist soil. Wait to water.
Great video. Can't wait to take some cuttings. I purchased Miss Bateman and Kardinal Wyszynski, planted together, but found one is an early bloomer and one a late bloomer, so I plan to move one of them since they won't bloom together.
this year I used saran wrap on top of the seed flats and it stopped the dampening off - just make sure you pull it off during the day if it gets hot in the nursery or you fry them
Good and informative video. now I know how to take cuttings from my fav clematis. Can't find it anywhere to buy so this is brill. Many thanks. Millie UK
If you want them to get more branches, just prune them in spring or after flowering, depends on what type you have. Btw: you should not buy Clematis with only one stem. And when the cuttings are growing, keep cutting it (Apical dominance) untill you have enough branches. Also a good way to propegate, "dropping". Plant the plant very low, so a lot of branches stick out of the ground. Wait a year and every branch has rooted and is a new plant. Or just take a branch and put it in a pot with soil and after a year, cut it loos from the parent plant, just like strawberry runners. I'm also trying your advice. Have made some `normal` cuttings and cutting's like you putting them on there sides. I used rooting powder, but don't think it's necessary. Most Clematis are easy to propegate only a handfull are difficult, with normal `wood cuttings`. But `dropping` works always. Also i don't use zipp-bags. The plant's needs CO2 and breeds out Oxigen. If the `gas` is more hot than the suroundig's it will be pushed upwards by the cold gas that want's to get down, so there is no need to close the bags. Just like hot air balloons are open. I use `normal` plastic bags and turn them up-side down and make shure the leaves are not tutch them. Because the plastic will get wet and the leaves start to rot very quickly. Every day i check my plants and remove the bag and blow inside of it before putting it back. So i put moist air but also CO2 inside the bag. The pot's are inside a plastic tray that collects all the water that comes from the bags but also the pot's it self when watering. This creates localy a very moist climate and stops you making a mess when watering. When cuttings looks good and growing i remove the bags. And when root's are seen from the bottom holes of the container i pot them on in bigger special climber containers. Untill i can plant them outside.
the last time i used this method i had good success... but at absolute least you will get your existing plant to branch out and give you more flowers :) nothing wrong with that :)
Great! I look forward to hearing your results... make sure to not let the cuttings get to hot.. you might need to bring them inside to a window with morning sun :) until they sprout of course :)
it might still work if you make a little greenhouse over top of it.. if you planting them directly in the ground outside, you might try cutting the bottom off a pop bottle and placing the top over the plant. and remove the lid for air flow :) Good luck with your project :)
that will help. remember to tap off any excess root hormone before you plant the cutting... too much can cause the cutting to calus a lot and not produce roots :) and remember the humidity dome or ziploc bag :) and good luck
thank you. I didnt know how to propagate clematis. I cut big branch and put it into water, waiting for roots. It is still alive and grows after a month, but I don't see any roots... maybe I did something wrong. but I am going to plant it into soil... but I guess it will die... because as I understand it needs humidity...
Oh Goodness... There are soo many varieties of clematis out there that I couldn't even begin to guess the varieties you have.. lol... I don't even remember my own. and i have the tags..lol.. Jackmanii is the only one that i seem to know. It's one of the most common ones with blue/purple flowers and 4 petals.
Dont know if you guys gives a damn but if you guys are stoned like me atm then you can watch all the new movies on InstaFlixxer. Have been streaming with my girlfriend for the last couple of weeks xD
how far down did you cut it? I guess if i were you i would follow the instructions in this video and make cutting from all of the leaf sections... as for the main plant. that will be fine. it should send out some side branching soon.. there is a low chance that that stem will not do anything for the remainder of this year... if that happens don't worry! it will re grow lush and lovely next year :) good luck with your cuttings :)
some plants root fine without the help of a rooting hormone. in some scenarios rooting hormone, if applied too heavy or incorrectly can cause the opposite effect.. they could just form a large callus and no roots. with these cuttings i didn't use any rooting hormone and i had a roughly 95% success rate. you can try a light dusting of hormone if you like... but it's not necessary.
i would suggest growing them in a sunny window if your temps get cold. i have not had any success this year... :( i think it is due to the extreme heat this summer... it has been off the charts... everything is baking :( i will try again next season hopefully when it is a little cooler... Good luck!
Thanks so much for this video, Last year I bought my first clematis plant and I ended up killing it by accident by cutting it down. I did harvest some seeds from a friend but have not planted them as I wasn't sure how to do it. But now with your video, I don't have to wait for seeds to grow I can get a cutting. THANKS SO MUCH!!! One quick question, Will using some root stimulator help when planting my cutting? Or do you suggest the natural way?
WOW! 7 weeks. how did you manage to keep them watered for that long... i would have surely forgotten about them by week 4 :) lol. I would treat them like a normal houseplant until spring giving them as much sun as you can. and maybe next year you can do this all over again for some friends..lol OR take some clippings from other varieties :) I love having different varieties twining together. especially if they have different bloom times.
Thank you for this video, would this work by leaving the pot indoors in a partially sunny area? The nights can get fairly cold here in the UK. I'd like to give this a try, I have one single very mature Clematis here, which has been established for around 8-10 years, which I'd like to take some cuttings off. How did your cuttings take? any results? Thanks in advance :-)
I have a clematis I never planted but it grew through the pot and is growing on my hinoki pine tree. I was wondering if it could be propagated and now I know. How did they turn out. I'll try a heat mat and a propagation dome. How long did it take to root?
Great video. For some reason I really suck at propogating these. I just put 6 in a humidity dome in a bright indirect sunlight spot. Its really humid right now. When do they usually take root? When is a good time to check on them? Thanks
Awesome, so excited to try this. I just bought my first plant and it was $18 for a puny one. How long do they take to root? No rooting hormone? Subscriber from Florida. Thank so much for sharing.
Hi, thanks for the video. You didn’t mention if you water it from time to time in the ziplock bag or it gets moisture from condensation? Thanks in advance
If it gets too dry, water it by placing the pot in a water dish. This method will prevent you from disturbing the roots from removing the bag. Don't make the soil soggy, only moist. I've found that the older the cutting, the drier the soil that it tolerates.
in a protected place outside should be fine... or if you are worried about them... an unheated garage would be ok too... make sure it goes dormant before before bringing it in the garage.... if new growth hasn't started you can bring them inside and put them on the window sill.

Awesome video, thanks! I just bought some clematis and couldn't get enough of the variety I wanted so I'm going to try to propagate some extras. I'm a little nervous about cutting off a part of these tiny plants though (they're probably only 2 yrs old and 3' tall in the little pot). How much should I cut off for propagating? By cutting off the top, will I stop it from growing taller this year? Thanks again!
when you prune a clematis... sometimes they branch out and continue to grow... other times they just sit there and look funny... I think if you prune in the late spring they will try and push out new growth. Good luck with your cutting :) I would not trim too much off... maybe enough to get one or 2 cuttings from each stem.. remember that you want to wait for the stem to harden off a little before taking cuttings.. if they are too green (tender) they will just wilt and die.
OK. So I planted them a few days ago - May 14. About how many days later is it safe to move them into the ground? If the rooting is happening under the soil, how will we know there is growth happening?
June is the perfect time :) Make sure to keep your cuttings out of direct sun. and out of extreme heat. the plant will not get huge in its first season.. but they should grow a foot or 2.. the next year you will see more growth
i monitor them... i never want them to be dry. but in the bag they don't dry out fast... but i usually check on them daily... at least every other day. sometimes if the humidity is too high i will give it a little air... this usually dries the soil faster too... once they start sprouting they can dry down a little
Judy Peck I don't understand the question... are you asking if you can use this method on fruit trees? or are you asking if you can graft clematis onto a fruit tree stalk?
+Judy Peck, there is no join club between clematis and fruit trees on this planet. If you mean grafting. If you mean cutting method for fruit tree propagation, it depends on which species you have.
Thank you so much for your wonderful comment :) I'm so happy that you were able to find my video useful :) And good luck with your clematis cuttings :) Please keep me posted on their progress :)
Mine have rooted well I've put in a bigger pot but I'm not seeing any New growth should I cut the leaf off? What do I do now?

good idea to use 2 node cuttings... more opportunity for success :)

I love all these videos I've got all sorts of plants cuttings and seeds for next year
Thank you so much - off to take cuttings now!👍
I got inspired by watching your videos and planning to start gardening.

@Kyrie Castiel Yea, I've been watching on InstaFlixxer for since november myself :)
a light dusting of root stimulator might speed up the process if you have some :) I tend to forget to use it when i take cuttings..lol.
Thank you for taking time to film and post this. Can I clarify the best time of the year to try this please?
Cheers
chris
i would say late spring or early summer. you want fresh growth. not stringy new growth or the woody old growth... but the stuff in between :)
Great information. What about potting mix. What I should do with some amount of water collected in Zip lock bag?
how far down did you cut it? I guess if i were you i would follow the instructions in this video and make cutting from all of the leaf sections... as for the main plant. that will be fine. it should send out some side branching soon.. there is a low chance that that stem will not do anything for the remainder of this year... if that happens don't worry! it will re grow lush and lovely next year :) good luck with your cuttings :)

What about breakage, can it be saved?
worth a shot... are you asking if your cutting breaks? or your plant broke near the base? the plant will regrow.
That's wonderful! I'm so happy to hear that you were successful :) how many cuttings did you start with?
Thanks
Thank you for this video, would this work by leaving the pot indoors in a partially sunny area? The nights can get fairly cold here in the UK. I'd like to give this a try, I have one single very mature Clematis here, which has been established for around 8-10 years, which I'd like to take some cuttings off.

I am going to try this today. Did your cuttings make it? Did you make a video of them?
Bougainvillea is more of a tip cutting from what i recall from school... with not a great success rate... have you ever propagated Bougainvillea?
Hi, that’s really helpful. Can you take cuttings like this in September?
I don't think they will be successful... but worth a shot. Nothing to loose :)
Well done! Thanks
Great video. For some reason I really suck at propogating these. I just put 6 in a humidity dome in a bright indirect sunlight spot. Its really humid right now. When do they usually take root? When is a good time to check on them? Thanks
i would say 6 weeks maybe 2 months and there should be some development. it can be slow.
Awesome, so excited to try this. I just bought my first plant and it was $18 for a puny one. How long do they take to root? No rooting hormone? Subscriber from Florida. Thank so much for sharing.
Usually takes a couple of months to get a shoot growing
I love this plant, I have it tattooed all down my right arm
oooo Nice :)
they should have flowers next year :)
Hi, thanks for the video. You didn’t mention if you water it from time to time in the ziplock bag or it gets moisture from condensation? Thanks in advance

interesting, thank you.
Thanks for the tips, just done cuttings of 2 varieties today, fingers crossed I get 3 or 4 to take, will they need much watering?
jondi11 just make sure that the soil is constantly moist (not wet). too much water might rot the new developing roots.
how care the cutting in the fist winter if I plant cut beginning summer ? Thank.
in a protected place outside should be fine... or if you are worried about them... an unheated garage would be ok too... make sure it goes dormant before before bringing it in the garage.... if new growth hasn't started you can bring them inside and put them on the window sill.
is it the same for all groups of clematis and what is the best time of year to do it
how long must i keep the clematis cuttings in the plastic bag
When you notice them starting to grow you can slowly start opening and removing the bag. you need to gradually lower the humidity otherwise you risk shocking the plant.
PlantzNThings How gradually do you open the bag? Also,do you add any additional water (after the first watering) before then?
Do you just leave them in the bag intill spring.
How often do you water them
not very often.
Thanks for this video, but how do I know they took ( rooted)?
Usually you should see some growth. Or the existing leaf will not die after a week or 2
will they have flower on them the next year are dose it take while to have flowers
Thanks man.
So is this the same process for Bougainvillea?
I have some clematis seeds. Can I plant them now in the pot so that I can plant it in the ground in spring.
sathya .chander you can do it now in a pot inside.. OR in the spring outside. what ever makes you happy :)
Assume it was high summer you took the cuttings?
I beleive it was
No not yet. I picked up some root hormone, so I'll put that on it when I do.
:) Are you going to give it a try? maybe you can make a video on that :)
Shouldn't you use rooting hormone and white plastic in the shade? Is there a reason you do not use rooting hormone?
i want to ask you a question if i sowing 5 little clinatis in the same place when i need to separate them because i already sowing them
If you want to separate them... I would do that after I see some new growth appear... just be very careful with the new delicate root system
@@PlantzNThings thank you
Question
Its now july 7th in Colorado. Am i to late to clip cut and plant????
you should be ok
after 2 weeks what? is that when you should take the plastic bag off? can they be put in the ground then? thanks
+Gareth M I would open the bag a little to allow some airflow... you don't want to transplant them until there is growth happening
OK. So I planted them a few days ago - May 14. About how many days later is it safe to move them into the ground? If the rooting is happening under the soil, how will we know there is growth happening?
Can you do this in July or is it too late?
What do you do if they are finally rooted and it is fall? Do I bring them in and put them under the grow light?
+Vicki Weaver if they are rooted I would either put them in a unrheated garage. Or a cold cellar
Thank you....I'm hoping I have them buried deep enough...that seems to be a great concern as well. I'm a newbie.
So, it's June 13th...is it too late to propagate clematis this year? If not, will I see much growth?
June is the perfect time :) Make sure to keep your cuttings out of direct sun. and out of extreme heat. the plant will not get huge in its first season.. but they should grow a foot or 2.. the next year you will see more growth
How often and how much do you water the clematis starts?
i monitor them... i never want them to be dry. but in the bag they don't dry out fast... but i usually check on them daily... at least every other day. sometimes if the humidity is too high i will give it a little air... this usually dries the soil faster too... once they start sprouting they can dry down a little
Have you ever used rooting hormone?
Hi! Can I do this now in spring with young plant? Thank you!
+Jelena Sinkovic That depends on how young your plant is... if the growth is really new it might not work...
Thank you for responding :) Plant is old, 6-7 years apx.
can the cutting be done in spring on two year 3-5 foot long cuttings from fruit trees?
Judy Peck I don't understand the question... are you asking if you can use this method on fruit trees? or are you asking if you can graft clematis onto a fruit tree stalk?
PlantzNThings can it be used on fruit trees that are 2-3 years old
+Judy Peck, there is no join club between clematis and fruit trees on this planet. If you mean grafting.
If you mean cutting method for fruit tree propagation, it depends on which species you have.
Did clematis gives seeds
PlantzNThings, I just got cuttings today from my friend. Is it too late to propagate? It's August.
Gizmojan never too late. if you are rooting them closer to winter you might need to bring them indoors and then plant them outside in the spring
ok Thanks!
