- 5043 'Earl Of Mount Edgecumbe' put's on it's usual super show as it heads to Cardiff on the Red Dragon. This was the first time since 1963 that 5043 had been to the capital of Wales. With four steam tours all operating throughout the UK, we decided that we'd get our first outing this year with the castle class, which turned out to be a good decision, as the loco ran like clockwork !
The day starts off at Small Heath, where we capture 5043 restarting away from a signal check as the train heads into Birmingham, two angles capture the action. Next up is, Eckington Loop, on the line from Worcester to Cheltenham, this section is known as a race track, which always guarantees you something quick, and quick it was !
With the tour now taking a break at Gloucester, this allowed us to just about get ahead of it and we headed for the most scenic shot of the day along the River Severn at Purton. This was followed by a shot at Lydney as the Castle heads towards Wales. By the time the return leg had come around, the weather and conditions had somewhat deteriorated making the shots rather difficult. We capture 5043 working away from the bridge restriction near Wistanstow, three angles capture the action. For the final shot we headed to Coseley on the outskirts of Wolverhampton. This line rarely sees steam as it's an extremely busy section with trains running through every 5 minutes At peak times. With the castle now running over 20 minutes late, it was no surprise to see the engine charging it's way through with a nice whistle from the driver. This topped off a great day following the pride of the GWR !
I hope you enjoy the coverage. - Auta a dopravní prostředky
Absolutely beautiful and it brings tears to my eyes. In 1964 my train from Oxford was late arriving at Didcot and we missed our scheduled connection to Swindon and had several hours wait, so the station staff stopped the Red Dragon at Didcot for us, although it was normally non-stop to Swindon. (At this late date the locomotive was a Britannia - fabulous loco - rather than a Castle. We were naturally all waiting on the wrong platform, and unfortunately they let the train out again before anyone could shuffle their luggage down Didcot's windy subway between platforms to get on it! I vividly remember puffing my way up onto the platform just in time to see The Red Dragon pull out without me on it! The rest of the journey is a sort of nightmare that builds reminiscences later in life, with relieving moments like playing cards with the station staff whilst waiting for a later stopping train to Swindon, ending up with my throwing stones at my parents' bedroom window at about 3 in the morning. One of the memorable rites of passage in my early 20s. But the Red Dragon had a huge cachet at the time, and the fact that the Western Region of BR stopped one of them for us was a red-letter day for me, even though they then proceeded to screw it up as usual. Hey, the thought was there.
Interesting tale from your past. I bet your parents were happy at their 03.00AM wake up call !
What a superbly put together video, with of course a star subject. And I like the neatly appropriate postscript of several satisfied enthusiasts walking home - brilliant, thank you.
Smokey and noisy, what a class machine, and some cracking locations, some excellent turns of speed, well done the crew on board, a superb video, 5* mate, thanks for sharing
Thanks very much Colin, there's not much that beats this engine.
Superb coverage as usual Liam and Phil....great locations providing stunning images...Regards...Bob
Brilliant, absolutely brilliant! Thank you! The Castles were always my favourites. Like sewing machines when going fast, but incredibly strong and sure footed when plodding hard upgrade. I regularly saw them take the Swansea trains out of Neath from a standing start up the hill round the huge 180 degree curve over the river. I never saw one slip. I hope I don't offend anyone, because the Brits were impressive, but even in the dry they always had a Hawksworth pannier on the back to lift them out of Neath. I will never forget being at the road bridge at night. The Brit, with its wonderful chime whistle would crow up, followed by the pannier, the sounds wafting across the valley. When the train crossed over the bridge at full pelt, there were sparks coming out of the Brit's chimney, a bright red glow from the ashpan, and a very "steamy" pannier dug in at the back!
This is how a mainline thoroughbred should be seen , not at 25 mph on a heritage railway . Thank you for sharing .
I like the way that if you look closely, you will see in several of these shots that there is just a wisp of steam from the safety valve. That means the fireman is on top of his job and maintaining full pressure (no easy job on a "runner") and the driver is handling the engine to use it all and waste none of it. Good to see the old skills still very much alive.
A really nicely put together sequence, and thank you for including the locations. I particularly like the footage at 7.30 with the splendid roar from the Earl's chimney and each round of coal darkening the exhaust, which can be seen in the exhaust trail in the going away shot, as well as a brief reflection from the open firebox door.
Thanks for watching and for the comment. Regards, Liam
Weather notwithstanding, you chose some brilliant locations! Liked the doppler-effect in the first sequence.
Fantastic video Liam and Phil , a great selection of shots at superb locations .
Cheers Steve, a great show from our local engine.
Excellent video as always Liam & Phil. I have to take my hat off to you for getting in so many shots on the day. You must have covered a lot of miles! Great coverage, well done, Geraint
Thanks very much Geraint, Didn't intend to do a lot of mileage, but with the return leg now over the Marches, I thought we'd make the most of it as I can't do the 25th. Regards, Liam
Wow, that was beautiful to watch.awesome scenery.
Thank you so much for the obvious amount of work you put into this video. Wonderful sound and vision! What a super location you chose by the Severn. How can anybody watch this without a start-to-finish smile? Bob Kershaw
Thanks for your kind assessment Bob, I'm glad you enjoyed it. Regards, Liam
great video one of the best engines ever built
Thanks Charlie, nail on the head !
Some cracking shots there especially Purton. I also loved the pronunced black-white-black-white-black long smoke trails from 8:20 to 9:30 witnessing every shovel load by the fireman.
Thanks very much, it was a great show from the loco & crew.
Super work. I love that image form 9 mins onwards, a great mix of steam and soot !
What a beautiful steam engine to film, and film it you did with perfection. it was just brilliant to see and hear, Thank you both,
Ernest, this engine never fails to impress and always makes for a good video.
Superb footage, loco' in fine fettle! Thanks for posting.
Fantastic video well done to you.
Cheers David.
An incredible and beautiful piece of machinery which i could watch all day thank you for this video
Agree with you on that Jim, though not much would get done.
Lovely footage as always Liam with a great variety of positions including your now obligatory night shot - fantastic action bud, and it was an inspired choice to film at Winstanstow causing 5043 to really dig in against the grade giving a great sound. Once again 5043 proved its reliability and power by taking 11 on in great style. I love watching this loco in action and I believe she is due up in the North West area quite soon! Hope to see it "out in the sticks" near Carlisle. Best wishes! Ken
Thanks as always for your detailed comment Ken. That's the first I've heard about the Castle heading to the North West, I hope you're right ! The engine never fails to impress and there's not much that stands up to this loco.
Very, very nice video, worth saving to my collection.
Thanks, glad you liked it.
WOW... Brilliant shots of the famous Earl
Very well done Liam, i had thought about filming at Purton from the same spot ( over the hand rail) as i live in Lydney, but went a bit further down river. What a great sight and sound you have captured, you even made Lydney station look tidy, many thanks for your effort in film this.
Thanks very much Peter, I only just about made it to Purton, well worth the chase.
Epic video.
Great video. The sound was spot-on. What a great old loco too. I grew-uo to the sound of Castles and Kings pounding past. Very nostalgic. I do wish they'd paint the old girl in the proper GWR scheme though...!
HeavensGremlin would look awful with her double chimney!
Not in the least. It's a minor detail on a Great Western loco.
I like the fire reflection on the smoke underside at 8:12 to 8:22.
Great stuff! Some of the shots are just beautiful...
Thanks Brian, your comment is much appreciated.
Superb sequence of video clips and wonderful sound. GWR AT ITS BEST
Indeed Gerry !
Superb. Just superb.
Glad you liked it Darren.
Liam/Phil another excellent video from you both showing 5043 at her best, and to finish your day at Coseley with a superb night shot. Well done to you both, it's a like. Cheers...Bill
Cheers Bill, a great day all round and it was nice to finish off at Colseley.
Hi Liam & Phil , brilliant filming & locations .......Dave
Thanks as always Dave.
Hi Liam , your welcome...Dave
Superb.
Splendid vid again
Thanks Kev, much appreciated.
Superb
To me, Foxcote Manor is the Pride & Joy of God's Wonderful Railway. She's not Main Line certified, but that doesn't matter in my book. Yet, I will admit Earl of Mount Edgcumbe is just as beautiful in her own way.
amazing video!
Thanks very much.
It must be nice going out to film the Earl Liam as you just know it's going to give a top performance. Great coverage of the tour from the lovely smoky opening to the final night shot
Absolutely Austin, all I have too worry about is locations, as the rest is down the Castle.
You have clearly put a lot of effort into making this short film and the results are perfect. Well done
Cheers Anthony, it's nice when your effort is rewarded.
I regularly travelled on the Red Dragon from Carmarthen to Paddington in the 60’s .
Very nice Liam 5043 at its finest. Looking forward to seeing this monster on the North Wales Coast later in the year. Gd job ya opted for 5043 as conditions on shap was poor with bad weather conditions. Anyway nice video. Richard
Thanks Richard, I would of liked to of seen the LMS show up Shap, but can't do everything, have done the castle over the NWCL, it's a decent route.
Fantastic shot coming round the corner at 3:30.
That feller at Small Heath was rather on the wrong side of the fence ...
Thanks Andrei, the gate was left open and he wen't through, but he was already there before we arrived so didn't bother saying anything.
very nice. We were doing 73mph by Eckington.
I assume you're talking about the Worcester to Cheltenham section ?
Excellent video. It's a shame there is an unauthorised snapper at the end of the ramp.
Excellent clips from a well travelled day....................must ask; what camera do you use................Mike
Thanks Mike, a long day but a rewarding one. The cameras used in this video were, Panasonic VXF990, X920 AND V750.
5043 pulling away
No Diesel too!
did anybody notice the man at 0.55 not wearing high vis
I'm Glad he wasn't to be honest.
Cant remember having to wear high vis in steam days, was not invented yet !!
Gall y Ddraig Goch wenu ar chi.
Thanks very much.
