This whole controversy reminds me of the xkcd comic about how if a guy is bad at math, an observer just goes "you're bad at math", but if a woman is, the observer goes "women are bad at math". There were many children, both boys and girls, who would find it relatable for a toy to also say math class is hard because it reflected their own experience. But because Barbie is a role model, and one for a disadvantaged group at that, she isn't allowed to be bad at things.

"Math class is tough" was to be relatable and most kids, regardless of gender, find math class "tough" at some point. The point was, despite the difficulty she goes on to any career she wants.

I am old enough to remember seeing scare pieces on this on Inside Edition when I was a kid. It had an interview woth a little girl whose parents bought her a BLO liberated Barbie. A Barbie talking like G.I. Joe was some Uncanny Valley shit.

The phrase “math is tough” evokes two feelings.
The first is associating it with an excuse equivalent to “I don’t want to do math and I’m too lazy to make up a good excuse so I’ll just say that I’m bad at it.“
The other was the first time you were challenged by mathematics. Not that you were solving a puzzle. Or doing something intellectually stimulating. But rather you were tasked with something that put your back against the wall. You felt like you’d be a failure if you didn’t complete it.
Frankly, I find “math is tough” to be pretty gender agnostic. From the introduction, I was expecting something egregiously sexist. The build up of this video was the biggest let down of 2023. Do better cracked. You used to be better

I don't object to being offended by the things teen speak barbie says, but "math class is tough" is just a fact, for most people, and especially if she was in school trying to become doctor. To me it's the vacant consumerist lines that should insult people like "I love shopping" and the like, or alternatively anything that might put forward un healthy body images, but math class is tough is just universally applicable.
A classic collectable simply because a few people decided to see a negative message where none existed.
I mean struggling with math in the 90s was a common trope in kids shows for boys and girls

That walking sexual harassment case made a point, in a way. Motivated girls aren't going to be swayed by dolls to not head to JPL, just as motivated boys aren't going to sign up for the Corps to head to Fermi Lab. The point is this: the people that head to those places are few and far between in the first place, let's encourage that instead of flattening efforts. Fund schools, accelerate the talented, open doors. It's expensive, but worth it.
But how do boys and girls get motivated to pursue any line of work to begin with?

It’s a scientifically proven phenomenon, tell people that their gender or race is bad at what your testing them for and you get worse outcomes.

I'm glad to see my suspicions about it being a prank (though with a point for once) confirmed. Despite being a parent by this time, I never heard of it (not saying that nobody else did in my country, but it was pre-social media and "non-serious news" items didn't often get picked up on). The Cracked presenter does such a good job making me laugh at pretty much anything, and those news reports were so serious, I was confused! Were they part of the prank or did it go over their heads? Out of context from their whole reports, it wasn't easy to tell.
The cutting the doll apart bit was the biggest clue lol.
It was only at the end that I was at the point where I needed my suspicions confirmed, so thank you!

Did anyone notice that people didn’t start being effected by Barbie as an ‘unrealistic role model’ until the PARENTS started to freak out?
We were all kids just playing with a toy and suddenly mom and dad start squawking about how ‘she gives kids Ed’ and THEN we started to do that.
