I do the same. I go back to my packing list on Word document to highlight the items I didn’t use or didn’t need in red color bold. All my lists in the past help me with future packing and what to take and what not to take for what type and duration of the trip.

About the waterproof hat; if your hat isn't waterproof, there is a liquid that you can order online that is used to coat shoes made out of fabric so that they don't absorb water, I think you could also use it on your hat or backpack or the frabric part of your foldable stool (or whatever you'd rather not get wet from rain while you sketch outside).

I'm definitely a heavy packer, so you're video is truly a good inspiration for me XD I was just thinking: if you bring a watercolour pad instead of a sketchbook, it would probably be wise to have something to store and protect the detached pages that you will have filled with your sketches (like a light cardboard or plastic folder).

No, I'm not a light packer when it comes to art supplies but surprisingly I packed light for an overseas trip (pencil case with few items, water brush, A6 moleskine, cotman 12 Sketchers box and another tin for extra colors) in 2015.
If I packed something nowadays I think I'd be okay with an A5 sketchbook, a pencil, a col-erase for some nice accents, a few pencils too for a pop of colour, some two fineliners (black and sepia), eraser, pocket brush, water brush, mister, an old pill container (for water) and a paper rag to clean the brushes.

A very thorough rundown, Teoh! If I could add one small thing, it's to find a mechanical pencil with a retractable lead sleeve. I like my Pentel MPs, but when I throw them in a pocket they can poke and snag. Something like a Staedtler or Derwent MP is more travel-friendly, IMO.

Then I watch - or listen - them again in the evening when I am too stressed to sleep, even too sressed to try to listen sleep meditation, when everything I have to do and remember next day in my work keeps me all too alert.

I tend to be fountain pen heavy when I bring art supplies during a trip. So i will bring 1-4 fountain pens (all with good capacity and filled to the brim to avoid air-expansion-related leaking on the plane), maybe a vial of fp ink if the trip is particularly long, a tiny mechanical pencil or coloured pencil, a hardcase to protect the pens during transit, and a notebook or two with fp friendly paper. I put the pens and inks in a ziplock bag with a paper towel during transit in case of leaks as well.
Also seconding a hat and water bottle being essential!
I find doing a tester page of the kit prior to the trip very relaxing.

You really can't go many places if you have a suitcase to lug around. I normally have a small travel art bag I bring with me everywhere. As for traveling over sea's I haven't got a chance to try it yet. I use to only use acrylics and I never felt comfortable taking them overseas. But now I tend to use for gouache and watercolor I have a plastic palette I take for a trip for the well are very large and for gouache, I'm trying traveling with white paint fresh from the tube. For far this system has worked for me. As for the water I either bring watercolors if I'm staying for more than 1 day and if not my water brushes work just fine. I've been things about design my own art kit based on the etcher one in the fact it can switch from a backpack to a messenger bag.

I have yet to take a sketching trip abroad but am going to next year. I will be taking a workshop in Italy. For ones in the US, lately I have started packing light recently, and like it, though you are way more minimalist than I am. I have a kit I pack in a small quart bag with portable painter (yes amazing urban sketcher watercolor set), a couple brushes, pens, and a pencil/eraser, and the binder clips). I do take a small bag with a couple watercolor pans of colors I run out of. I don't know how to get around this one unless you take a different paint box or you are near stores with watercolors. My trips are normally far away from everything.

Well I take a bit more for art supplies but not that much (2 brushes, 2 waterbrushes, Portable Painter, a couple of microns (I have a fountain pen and am scared to take on a plane), pencil and eraser). I do carry a backup, extra brush, pencil, and a couple pans of common colors. I have never been anywhere where I was likely to find art supplies--so I have felt I needed a backpack, or no painting. I know this is an old video, but what is the larger of the two plastic palettes? Not the portable painter- the one with the six wells… 6:49

Winsor Newton Deluxe Sketcher Box. Get the one with 3 instead of 2 rows of paint because that will have three plastic separators to hold all the pans down.

Really interesting seeing your sketching bag contents. I almost always over-pack and regret it afterwards when my back is killing me and I haven't used half the stuff I brought! Really need to start cutting down lol. If I may ask, what brand is that flat square water container? I've been looking for a container that I can double up as a brush washing pot for a while but nothing I find is thin enough or water-tight.
Edit: btw, regarding sharpeners, I found one that fits over the nib of your graphite pencil just like a lid, on Jackson's art, it's by Kum and I really really love it! You can find it here: www.jacksonsart.com/kum-tiptop-pop-d-pencil-and-sharpener-assorted-colours

Do those pens leak on a plane?

    • @cheshirecat9037
      @cheshirecat9037 Před 5 lety +3

I read an article that says that fountain pens do that (I think that some ink pens also do that?), because of the pressure caused by the altitude change and it would be preferably to store it with the tip upwards or take a ballpoint pen instead.

Sonya, Goulet Pens has a lot of videos on mostly fountain pens; but, you can search for videos on how to travel with a pen to minimize leakage.
