Good video. As a professional illustrator for over 40 years, I hope I can offer you some simple, practical advice which will help in your progress. Two really simple things to help you sketch more loosely and with greater freedom - hold your pen further ‘up’ (towards the cap end). It’ll feel strange at first, but it gives the nib more ‘uncontrolled’ movement. And try not to ‘lift’ the nib off the paper when you draw different elements of a building - as if you’re drawing with one continuous line. It’ll give your work a nice ‘sketchy’ feel. You’ve certainly got some talent there and you can already see the progress through your sketchbook. I hope you don’t mind my offering you advice. Keep up the good work.👍🏻

Loved this video which popped up randomly in my recommended videos. One of the big things to remember about urban sketching is the memories that you create sat there for a few minutes with a sketchbook and pen. It’s not all about the perceived quality of the artwork, it’s more about the experience of being, seeing and doing. Each time you look back through your sketchbooks, you will remember the experience much more than if you had snapped a photograph 🙏

I am a graphic/layout designer and these sketches are BEAUTIFUL!! I really love the style and the sketch from June 16th with the shadowing behind the net (?) got me chills! LOVED IT!
Other sketches got me goosebumps aswell: July 1st, 8th, 10th then the watercolor ones?! Omg all of them!! You made them pop put of the page! Incredible work! You should try 2 page scenery too, if you have the patience and time obviously. I can only encourage everyone to try not just urban sketching but any! It does not matter if it is not like any style already existing because it is your own ❤ this is one of many things my dad taught me who is also an artist ❤
Be proud of your work!! ❤

Thanks so much for sharing the start of your journey in Urban sketching! It was helpful to see your day by day sketches and realize everyone (not just me) has days when a sketch all comes together and other days when you just drop it and move on. I can tell you’re a “life-long learner” and applaud the journey you are on! I’m retired after 37 years of teaching elementary students and still love to learn about the world around me!

I love th fact that the location you set up to do your first public "out in the wilds" urban sketching frames the word "courage" at first sight, while you talking about being nervous as well as later, when you sat down it shows "discipline" and "dedication" in the background while drawing
Not sure if intended, but it just framed all this process a perfect :D

I just finished watching your “I Tried Urban Sketching for 30 days”. As a professional artist I commend you on your journey.
I have 2 comments that will, hopefully give you a little confidence.
    1. Quit making the comment “I am not an artist.” Baloney! You do have some skill and it’s true that there are rules to drawing. Any attempt at drawing sets it’s own rules. Once you put pen or pencil to paper with the purpose of interpreting what you see, you have succeeded.
You want the building to look perfect? TAKE A PHOTO!
    2. If you want the buildings to look grounded and not look like they’re floating in space. Learn basic perspective. Draw what you see-the shadows might not look correct but keep at it.

This recommended video is on point! I'm just getting into urban sketching and drawing in general. I bought a sketchbook and everything, I mean business! But I'm still struggling to pick up the pen and drawing. I'm stressed and paralyzed by the fear of failure, so I'm tense throughout the whole time I'm drawing, which was meant to be a fun thing in the first place ... But seeing all your sketches, and realizing I found beauty in absolutely all of them, plus hearing about the 20 hours thing really inspired me. I wanna start the same journey too. Also, truly brave to go outside to live sketch. So motivating! Thanks for sharing

You need to think a little bit differently about mistakes and what they mean. Most artists' styles are not defined by their perfection. They are defined by their mistakes. Your mistakes add charm to your work. They give you a sense of your own artistic identity. There is a certain kind of clumsiness inherent in being a beginner that is something to be overcome, for sure, and I would say you are well on your way to doing that. But some of that will turn into your own unique thing, and it's desirable. (Can you tell I'm an art teacher?😂)

that's a great question. I have a pinterest board with a bunch of reference pictures that I use. I typed things in like "interesting architecture" and "Urban sketch references" and just plain "architecture". The neat thing about pinterest is that when you click on a photo you like, it gives you a bunch of similar photos as recommendations and that leads you down a pretty good rabit hole full of cool buildings to draw.

It appears the first skill for you to learn is how not to break up with your partners! LOL/SORRY - SERIOUS! OKAY - OKAY! That was bad. I'm going to send myself to my room (to sketch). Great idea to increase your knowledge base when coping... I'm coping with the recovery from 16 hand operations and the arthritis is not funny either. I chose to give a re-birth to an old hobby/talent I've neglected for over 40 years! Drawing. I was good. Now I'm a beginner again re-learning how to draw BUT loosely this time. Before it was DRAW EVERYTHING and IN DETAIL!!! Now it's going to be - leave almost everything out of the image. "Be sloppy". It's great that I can hold the pen lose in my hand and let IT take me where it wants to go. LOL Okay, I'm truly enjoying this new art skill I'm developing, and it's wallet friendly too. Loose Sketching is my new format. Maybe a touch of watercolor down the road... Oh and when you're 71 yrs old and high on medical marijuana one shouldn't comment on CZcams unless you're in it for the long haul. SORRY. Great videos. I Subbed and Liked. No friends to Share with LOL. THX

Yes more urban sketchers around my age that aren’t retired 😅 I always want to go to meetups to get more feedback/inspiration but they are often when I’m at work 🥲

Same here! Im in a place where there doesnt seem to be meet ups of any kind. The closest urban sketch group is about 2 hours away from me. Im thinking of starting an urban sketchers regional chapter near me!
