I was amazed about the fact that, not only did Eric himself bring up the topic of necessity (when he said that those who need to kill animals to survive are moral), but Eric also broached the idea of putting himself in the animal's shoes and how it didn't matter whether it was factory farming or other forms of farming- all is immoral. Seeing how empathetic (and non-defensive) he was, was relieving to see. Watching this made my day!

My wife and I have two fifteen year old boys. Their science teacher is a vegan and she takes a few minutes of class to debate with kids who parents are in animal agriculture. I am in the hunting and fishing industry. I own a small store and a fishing barge that I am going to be opening in a couple weeks.
She debated with them because I offered them a job. I know vegans are always right, smarter, stronger, faster. They came into the store after school and told me what they were doing and what I was doing is wrong and they quit.
Now they work in a vegan restaurant two towns over busing tables, wrapping napkins. For five dollars an hour. I was paying them fifteen fifty an hour.

It's also really great to see that as a result you're now watching Ed's videos. I'm sure your sons will appreciate you taking this interest in something that will likely now be very important to them. Perhaps they will inspire you and your wife to make some albeit difficult (re your profession), very positive changes.

This was the most productive and open-minded conversation I’ve seen one of the challengers have so far in this series. Ed keeping it together and getting through conversations with people like that one idiot girl, who wouldn’t stop for a breath, only to eventually get to people like this guy and make a real difference in his life is so worth it, and Ed is the only one with the patience to do it. My fucking hero.

Had a small (3.5 Oz) fillet steak for lunch, so I'm def. not angry. Team V makes omnivores more appreciative of real food. Decided to go vegan, ~3yrs ago but Day1 research paused the project & by Day3 it was binned. Research has continued & all I find is plant-based BS. I guess I'm a troll🙄or else I don't wish to eat a diet which, historically, has been that of paupers & slaves.

What an astute young man! I wish Ed had been around when I was younger. I didn't stop eating animals until I was 27 - almost 31 years ago. At the time I didn't know what vegan was, animal sentience or the horrific practices in the dairy industry. When I finally found out about it 2 1/2 years ago I went vegan on the spot.
It's never too late to do the right thing.
I didn't learn the facts until about 60 years old, but one thing is certain...
I will be vegan for good.

Eric is the demonstration of a key psychological trait found by scientists among vegans :"openness". You need to be open to new ideas, norms and behaviour to change. That's why if Eric is not vegan, just by his attitude we're all confident that he's capable to improve himself by his openness.

This dude, smart young man, is one of my favorite who goes 'up against Ed" haha. He's on the right path, if he becomes vegan or not, he cares and it shows. The world wont become vegan overnight and the 'in betweens', like this guy, shows that people are starting to really consider other ways of being with other beings.
This is my school!! If I had seen Ed on campus, I would’ve lost my mind. Ed, thank you so much for all you do for the community and the animals. You truly inspire me. And much love to Eric for creating such lovely conversation and being so open-minded.

@@0BluePrototype0 I think that he is referring to when non-vegans speak to vegans, not just in general. People are, as a rule, very defensive when speaking about veganism with a vegan (this is just anecdotal from my own life and from what i have heard from others). So, I think what he means is that it was surprising that the guy was so open to arguments against eating meat. Not that meat eaters aren’t open minded in general.
@@natashathomsen7183 I think everyone gets defensive when they have their morals challenged, which is a bit part of why so many people are reluctant to have conversations about veganism. It is really important for vegans to have an inquisitive stance like Ed, and to ask questions instead of accusing.

He's a good man. I like that he wasn't afraid to continue to ask questions when he didn't understand accountability. Most people would be afraid of asking what seems like an obvious question, especially on camera. It takes courage to be able to admit you don't know something.
He's already showing responsibility and accountability without even realising it.

Because the meat is widely available thanks to mechanical means and no one has to go hunt, take down, kill, slaughter, skin, gut, cut up animals themselves. If they did then most of the world would be veg/vegan 🤝☺️
Yeah! I was the same. But the worst part is 0 knowledge about other sides of meat industry! Most meat eaters (just like us probably) have or had no idea what was on the plate, the history behind. I’ve developed such a huge empathy for animals that at this point I can even say I love animals more than humans.😂

Yeah its given me a very good framework on how to recommend cold turkey veganism when I do.
I feel people like this, know prior to approaching Ed's table, that they just want some confirmation and direction..a good conversation to learn from. All throughout university I dabbled in vegetarianism after watching earthlings. I was like Eric and understood my food choices had an effect on things behind the curtains and that my dollars spent on animal products supported the supply and demand concept. I didn't have enough information and knowledge on how to improve and spent the next 7 years eating meat and dairy, feeling guilty.. knowing deep down it wasn't right FOR ME. Now I have more than enough knowledge on basic nutrition and have been vegan for over a year. I've consumed no red meat, chicken, or dairy products for close to 2 years. that's because I was spearfishing and harvesting seafood for a year before coming to realize I could get all the nutrients I need from a diverse plant based and whole food diet. That and that the suffering I witnessed and caused first hand did not feel good. I now live by the rule, that "life is life". My life is no more valuable than an animal's. I'm at peace with knowing my actions and intent are to better the life of all living creatures, including humans, here on this beautiful earth. I love these videos as they are such a good source of inspiration to keep going. The number of plant based / vegan people grows by the day and I love it. We got this!✌️❤️💪
life is life is such a good way to put it! i was personally a vegetarian for a couple years, and then covid-19 happened and for some reason that shifted me into a completely plant based diet. coincidentally i started watching earthling ed at that time too haha! 23 now and vegan, never going back! life is life, and everyone should be treated equally! i’m going to steal that now!!

As someone who has transcribed a few interviews for documentaries in the past I can tell you that, for example, scientists are almost always awful infront of the camera, they often struggle to form full sentences with proper syntax.
So I don’t hold that against people.

Amazing conversation and refreshing to see someone’s lightbulb light up without continual rejection. Regardless of the argument, he did not deflect or was afraid of hearing the other persons point of view with the intent to prove them wrong as soon as they stopped talking. Ed you have done a wonderful job to engage in conversation and let the other party justify themselves rather than attack. This is the dialogue structure we need to help resolve some of our deepest problems as humans. I believe that Selfishness, unfortunately, is the biggest root of all issues we deem as wrong as a society.

I'm often concerned of hitting on strong opposition when talking to meat eaters, but I should keep in mind that there's good and compassionate* people out there like this guy.

I was worried about this initially as well, but the surprisingly thing about getting out there and doing outreach is that you realize "intelligent and open-minded" is the norm not the exception. If you've got an inclination to do so I highly recommend trying your hand at outreach.
If you've got a camera, even better as it helps you review and improve!

He is actually very philosophical and his response has gave me great hope in how there are more people as logical as him
we are all born vegan friend, just raised as carnists.
This was an incredible exchange of ideas! Eric was completely open and honest and was willing to listen and ponder his actions. He was also mesmerized by Ed's hands as he weaved through the debate. I don't know how it took me so long to find Ed but I'm glad I did and I'm glad I'm vegan!
this guy was so awesome. love how he didnt just listen, but actively wanted Ed to elaborate on certain points. he seemed like he was genuinely interested and wanted to make a change.
When I finally started my road toward veganism the first step for me was to stop buying any animal products. I wasn't vegan at this point yet because I would still eat dairy and fish if it was already at the table. Seeing Gary Yorofsky videos and a documentary called the Cove helped me to connect with veganism and activism, when before that I was only doing a boycott.
Thank you, Ed. I keep watching/reading because you null my confirmation bias with NEW enlightening pathways to understanding, through compassionate discourse. Today I was reminded that the end goal of this is in fact to END animal exploitation and the institutional suffering of all beings, not merely to more efficiently snivel about each others'

Like Ed said, best thing to do now is dive into the harsh reality of factory farming and looking at vidéos just to be 100% aware of where your money goes when purchasing these products.

totally agree. surprised myself on how much more physical endurance, strength and energy i got from a vegan diet. definitely improved. even got other fitness friends to try whole food plant based. powerful diet with no moral issues, saving the animals. its a win win for everyone.
I thought the title of this video was sarcastic, forewarning us of an impending car crash of a discussion. How wrong I was! And happy to be wrong, too. Eric was so open and receptive. He really engaged with the questions you posed to him. He wasn't at all defensive. If only all exchanges on hard topics could be this easy! Additionally, I have been thinking a lot since the Kurt Zouma/Cat incident. Like you, I used it as an opportunity to hold up the mirror to people, getting them to reflect on their behaviours and cognitive dissonance. I realised that, as I was just vegetarian (~95-99% vegan with my purchases/consumption), I was actually employing the same techniques of self-deception as they were. This incident and the subsequent discussions enabled me to look into that mirror and say, "You need to be accountable.". I've been living veganically for the last few weeks now. It has been so easy. There has only been 2 or 3 times where I have had to consciously not consume something that I would've done beforehand, and it has not been a great loss.
That accountability advice was excellent. I got maybe half way through 'Earthlings' as meat eater 10 years ago and made the switch then and there. I couldn't even finish the film.
Not directly related to this video, but I thought plant-based folk might be interested in this. My 15 yr old son went vegan a year ago. He influenced me to do the same (I'd been vegetarian for 30 years). Knowing how important it is for kids his age to get the correct nutrition, I educated myself a bit on which PB foods provide a healthy balanced diet. The dietary changes were not hard to achieve. A year later and I arranged a blood test analysis to check that all was well. The doctor reported that my son's results were quote 'really good' with every major nutritional indicator showing as it should be. This is a good practical example to counter the nutritional myths about a PB diet.
I really enjoyed this conversation. Eric seems like an honest and emotionally intelligent guy, no defensiveness just an open mind and curiosity! I hope he goes vegan. 🌱

I challenge you to go to a good pure vegan restaurant and claim that it is boring. You can get every dish that you now enjoy in a vegan version.

There are too many so called vegan activists who actually argue against actual vegan activism and argue for meatless mondays because "carnists don't like it when we preach veganism". I hope they watch this video and realize that we are fighting for every single individual animal. If we aren't fighting for an eventual vegan world we aren't animal rights activists
I have other vegans get mad at me all the time for this.
Like a person will say "Yeah I'm not vegan, not ever gonna be, but I do eat locally/sustainably raised meat and I try to reduce and stuff" and I'll just go "oh actually here's some reasons why that's not really that great and why you might actually wanna reconsider that stance"
And then I'll have "vegans" telling me- after like a one or two comment exchange- that I'm too aggressive..? and that this person is trying their best and we need more people like them and "we have to realize that not everybody wants to be vegan. baby steps are important. any change is good change!"
Like i don't even know how to process that logic.
@@ben66562 Yeah. There has to be a balance. Obviously we don't want to scare them off, and we have to encourage them, but that doesn't mean we can't push them to be better. Even if we want them to listen, we can't say it's enough when it isn't yet.

I just cannot compromise on that. if someone says they're going to start cutting back and eating local now then to me that just suggests they don't really understand then? and instead of just patting them on the back for coming this far or something I'm like well no what piece of the puzzle is missing? what conversation have they not had yet? what is it going to take to get them there? because the second you fully understand these things, there's no other possible conclusion you'd come to.
and I've had conversations with people before where they start at "reduce, eat local, sustainable" and stuff and then once I just get across a few key points then they're putting it together and asking for advice on what to eat as a vegan. it does happen. obviously not with everybody. but it drives me nuts when people just want to leave the conversation there when sometimes they might just be one conversation away.

@@BethanieBoots same.. when I went vegan when I was around 16, my sister was luckily mainly vegan too. So she helped me a lot with the transformation :) Now I've been vegan for almost 6 years and didn't regret it for one day!

Eric is so humble and open-minded it almost melts my heart. If only all human beings are like him!
Another thing that made my day today was that my ex-boyfriend who I broke up with over a year ago sent me a text today telling me that since he moved to another city, he watched Earthlings again himself (we watched it together once but it didn't really strike him that much) and has since been taking baby steps towards becoming a vegan. Today it's one month since he became a vegan. He said he owed me an apology because he once said "everyone does some evil things and maybe for me it's eating animals" and he felt embarrassed in his head every now and then thinking of what he said. Indeed, he firmly said he will never be a vegan when we were dating. I said the same thing too, a couple of months before I became a vegan in 2018. People can surprise themselves by what they could do and change. I'm convinced that if the vegan community keeps doing what they are doing, they will eventually reach the right people and make the change. A huge thanks to Ed again. Hopefully we are all an inspiration to someone else one way or another.
I have been recently very Introverted and reserved as far as Intellectual discussions go but you remind me that just being vegan isn’t enough and that words travel with much more power. Thanks for reminding me never to lose sight Ed. 💚
Ahw, know it's also okay to be the quiet introverted vegan. We are not always able or in the right mental state to try and motivate others to go vegan. Just don't be too hard on yourself.

💚 The world needs more people like this curious and compassionate student. For people like this, we do not need to take a "hardline" approach. He will be vegan if he is exposed to a few more vegans along the path of his life who can continue to enlighten him. So...who among you will step up and help him get his 100 "clicks"? Vegans who are silent need to remember that they have so much more power than they think they do. Speak out. Wear vegan t-shirts. Order the vegan options loudly in restaurants. Remind people that they were all born vegan and all they need to do is return to the inner compassion they were born with. If you're vegan, make your presence known in the world. Don't just eat popcorn while watching videos like this. Engage. Be brave. Speak out and be the voice of the animals who are suffering so much and desperately need our help. I am mostly a popcorn eater because I have severe social anxiety, but I did point out recently to an anti-vegan that children have to be taught to kill. It isn't natural and we weren't meant to do it. A child who kills an animal on their own would be labeled a psychopath and future serial killer. Watching these videos has been slowly helping me get up the courage to say something ✌️

This is a guy who's already vegan by heart. If you're reading this Eric, you're not alone in this! It gets easier over time once you do the proper research. Since you mentioned proteins and other amino acids as a first I would suggest trying a documentary like the Game Changers.
